3 Sides suffers from its sequencing and is overlong IMO. I hate it when bands group their songs together like that....all the rock songs, then the pop songs, then the ballads. It has become basically an EP for me, as I rarely listen much past the rock songs.

And no most bands don’t sequence their albums like III Sides it’s mixed all around but if you understood the concept of III Sides you’d understand why they did it like that. The idea is whatever mood you’re in you can play a certain “side”
Mark Dodds to me the debut isn’t anything special it’s a product of its time and many generic hair metal songs I think the last album saudades is better

I agree with Pete. III Sides would for sure be my #1. I think Politicalamity is Nuno's best guitar work of any song Extreme ever recorded. I love his playful riffs on that song. I've often wondered if other musicians are aware of his talent or if he was ignored by pretty much everyone? Gary Cherone, unfortunately at this point, I think is mainly known for that god-awful Van Halen album. But you're both right. Had Extreme come out a few years prior, they would've been huge. As for the rest of the bands Rich listed, Winger and Stryper definitely deserve some love. I've been a Stryper fan since 1986. They've released some of the best power metal around. And they're still doing it! Just released a new album last month which is killer. Michael Sweet is one of the best rock vocalists ever. I know their message turned many away but as The Rageaholic points out, if you judge them purely on the quality of their music, you can't deny how good they really are. Great video Pete & Rich. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Can't wait for Winger!

Love Extreme; saw then in early Nineties opening for Bon Jovi; very underrated band, great Harmonies and Nuno Bettencourt is soooo underrated; Cherone a great performer and Vocalist. Saw Cherone with Van Halen in late Nineties and although i didnt like Van Halen 3, he did the other Van Halen material very well. I only have the first 3 studio albums and the more recent live album, i rank them in order 1. Three Sides to every Story 2. Pronograffitti 3. Self titled Keep up the great work for us Pete.
Their debut album it's curiously their best record, almost a masterpiece within its scene. That mixture between Hard Rock, Funk, Country, Heavy Metal, power ballads, multiple armonizing vocals, incredible guitar work, groovy and magnificent drum presence and that amazing bass. Oh man, what an album. Maybe it hasn't the best lyrics of all time, but in a general point of view that album is a gold classic for me. Wow i think Waiting For The Punchline is a KILLER CD with some excellent variety -------"There is no god, Cynical" (1 of my favorite songs by them, go play that song right now and listen how kick ass it is!! ) then some slower blues based stuff like" leave me alone" (Garys singing with such emotion) and Naked (Nunos playing so tasty!) i think Hip today was not the best idea for a single but a solid song, "Tell me something i dont know", "Evilangalist" (which sounds like a Zeppelin tune) .... Mike Mangini (whos a beast of drummer) is on 4 or 5 tracks on this CD.. I love this CD, go give this CD another spin of you havent in a while!...... Im serious I would 3 sides as #1, Pornograffitti as #2, WFTP as #3, Extreme as #4 and Saudes as #5 ----- No bad CDs no matter how you rank them - excellent band, with great harmonies, tight rythym section with bass and drum section, Garys vocals and of cpurse the the AMAZING Nuno on guitar, very underrated band IMO Great job as usual Pete - keep up the good work
Rich made mention of a string of albums that were released during the time 'III Sides To Every Story' was released and he couldn't be more accurate ('Mane Attraction,' 'Dog Eat Dog,' 'Pull,' 'Against The Law,' 'Prisoners In Paradise,' 'Bust A Nut,' 'Subhuman Race'). The only two he might have overlooked was Motley Crue 'S/T' (w/ John Corabi) and Dream Theater's 'Images And Words'. Extreme Ranked (Worst To Best)...this one is really hard since all of them are great in their own right...such minor separations in songs/performance: #5 - 'Saudades de Rock' #4 - 'S/T' #3 'Waiting For The Punchline' #2 - 'III Sides To Every Story' #1 - 'Extreme II: Pornograffitti'

Played 3 sides to death when it came out. Listened to it a couple of weeks ago and it is still as great and relevant as ever. Just timeless. Everyone, check out how they opened the Freddie Mercury tribute at Wembley back in the day. FANTASTIC!!!! And yes, reviews of Winger but also Stryper Please!!!
What a great list of 90's albums Rich. I never jumped on the grunge bandwagon but kept listening to all those bands. You know: Tesla, Ratt, Slaughter, Winger, Skid Row, Cinderella, White Lion, Warrant, Firehouse, Great White, Giant, Whitesnake, etc. etc. So cool that you will do a show on Winger!!! And you know what, I will revisit Extreme, I guess I did give up on them and never gave them their due respect.

Gary has always had one of the most underrated voices...he never gets talked about enough for how solid his voice is.....and Extreme too is also an underrated band, for me they have always been Queen jr...they rock

Very interesting discussion guys! My list is identical to Pete's except I would change 5 with 4 although your point regarding Punchline's sound is a good one. Might need to re listen to that album in fact as it has been a while. Definitely agree on 3 sides, what a masterpiece! God knows how many times I have tried to turn my friends to that album ! Overall great band, one of my fav in fact. Not a large discography but man not even a bad album!

@@mikeimpressionsreviews MIchael - first, thanks for your follow-up question. Second, apologies for the delayed response here but was unavailable the last week or so. Absolutely listened to this album. At first, and I believe it was a mistake, was to listen to it in bits and pieces here and there rather than as a complete album. But later listenings put me to mind that this is one of those albums that seems much better listened to as a whole. And that way, I found it much more memorable in all ways - composition, performance, lyrical content, etc. So many thanks for recommending this record and especially for following up recently. Feel free to recommend more if time permits. I am always interested in listening to music new to my ears - even if it is not brand new on the calendar.

It seems I may have long been a fan of this band, without actually knowing that I was a fan, mainly due to one song (not the one you might think...) 1. III Sides To Every Story 2. Extreme II: Pornograffiti 3. Waiting For the Punchline 4. Extreme 5. Saudades de Rock I had a mixtape back in the mid-90's (I probably still have it somewhere) of a program I had taped from a radio station. It had this awesome music used during the outro to a commercial break, and it stayed floating around in my brain for years. When I popped in Waiting For the Punchline, and Track #6 came on, I was like, "Holy s**t! There it is." I'm talking about "Midnight Express," that tasty, badass instrumental on the album. You guys sold me when you brought up Queen, and I've always loved "More Than Words" (sue me.) Picked up all five albums shortly after this video aired. III Sides is a masterwork, musically, conceptually and lyrically. Pornograffiti is a masterwork, too. The production on WFTP doesn't bother me too much, and the songs are great. The debut probably won't get many points for lyrical genius (I love KISS and Aerosmith, so I'm used to a fair share of silly, cringe lyrics), but the catchy "Wind Me Up," the King's X-ish "Watching, Waiting" and the gorgeous "Rock A Bye Bye" are my faves. Saudades is a great reunion album. All five albums are great, actually. Interesting how, as each album progressed, the darker the lyrical themes became (with the debut being the lightest of the bunch.) Great musicians, great writing and arrangements, great songs, great stuff :-) So thanks! Keep the good stuff coming!!
I love House of Lords! There's a band you need to get updated on Pete, I'm sure you'd love most of their recent albums. Not quite up there with Sahara but damn good non the less! 👍
Great show and great point about 1990-1995 albums from great bands that then took a while to recover. I would throw in Kansas Freaks of Nature from 1995. It's my all time favorite album from the band, but did not do well in the charts and seemed to take them a while to recover. Hi Pete how about ranking the albums for Enchant, greeat prog rock band from San Francisco with Ted Leonard from Spock's Beard on vocals?
III sides is the one for me. I love when bands expand their sound and ideas and they did that on this record. Waiting for the Punchline is really underrated. Bands from from the 80's produced many amazing records that went unnoticed while grunge were ruling the world like Waiting for the Punchline, Motley Crue with Corabi, Vince Neil's Carved in Stone (i know people won't agree but that record is very creative and the production kills), Cinderella Still Clinbing, Tesla Bust A Nut, Warrant Dog eat Dog and many more.
Coming back to this video with some renewed interest in Extreme due to the new album and single that was just released. After a fresh listen, here is my list: 1. Waiting for the Punchline (Maybe it's because I was a 90s teenager who was also into grunge, but I love this record. The production doesn't bother me and each song is a bit of a surprise.) 2. Pornograffiti (Fun as hell, brilliant writing, great production) 3. Three Sides to Every Story (This might be their best-written album, but long albums exhaust me. I just have to be in the mood.) 4. Saudades de Rock (Interesting comeback record with plenty of variety) 5. Extreme (This is a great introduction to the band and while there are hints of what would come later, it just scratches the surface for me. "Play With Me" is actually the first Extreme song I ever heard from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure!) Also, as far as Cherone goes, I'm also in the minority of people who love VHIII. It's not a perfect record, but there are some bangers on it and I still revisit that album frequently. Cherone was great on the tour.
Great rankings guys. Been a big fan of this band ever since the debut. For once I’m going to side with the co-captain Rich. Hoping that the band will add more albums in the near future.
When I saw them they were playing about a 3,000 seat theatre in Fresno, CA where I grew up and saw lots of concerts in my youth. The opening band I believe was Saigon Kick who also had a big ballad hit at the time. Can't remember what it was off the top of my head, but if you listened to rock radio in the early 90's you would remember it.
Joe Jorgensen ~ The Saigon Kick song is “Love Is On The Way” from their second album, The Lizard. It’s my favorite SK elpee. (Although you can’t really go wrong with any of their first three platters.)
Davey Cretin yes now I remember it. I remember being fairly impressed with them live even though I only new that one song. I believe their other stuff was also more hard rock then one would think from the ballad. I do remember they covered David Bowie’s Major Tom. Must be one of the few shows from that era I wasn’t messed up at as I seem to remember it well. Lol
Joe Jorgensen ~ That’s on their third album, Water. By that time the singer had split and their guitarist took over the lead vocal chair 🪑. Jason Bieler. I think the two cats had a BIG falling out which lead to his departure.
Davey Cretin I’m sure your right but I’m pretty sure they were touring the big hit at the time and had the lead singer from the video because they did that song. Perhaps it was in their live set before the cut it on an album.
Joe Jorgensen ~ It was probably in their set before they cut it for their third CD 💿. Without their lead singer in the band anymore, Bieler was probably a little short on material for that album. If he didn’t put it on himself, maybe the record company, Atlantic, recommended a cover song. EVERYONE was doing it back then... it was de rigueur.
Hello everyone, Rich has become my favourite guest. Nuno Bettencourt is a guitar hero, not a surprise that Rihanna got him on tour. First two albums are a must have for every rocker. Funny thing for me, Hole Hearted is a better ballad than More than Words. Agree with the analysis, Warrant was a great band for me that got bad blood because of the Cherry Pie song.
I've been a pub manager most of my life. In 1991 I took over a pub which had been closed for a while. Needed some redecoration. Pornograffitti was the soundtrack to me and the wife and a few mates painting walls and ceilings during the night until the early hours. Bit of Vai and Satriani in there too
III Sides is my favourite by a fair stretch--always liked it but didn't truly appreciate it until later. I would love to see Extreme re-issue this on vinyl: 3 x 10" records, one each for the 'Yours', 'Mine', and 'Truth' sides--and including 'Don't Leave Me Alone' which was not included on the CD release (it is on the cassette though). And make it green vinyl (A guy can dream, right?)

Shadow Life is the Dokken album you're trying to remember and it isn't good but its predecessor Dysfunctional is awesome. And yay for Winger I really like that band.
The idea that Extreme and Poison were on the same “genre” tells you all you need to know. Extreme were too smart for their time. 3 sides is a masterpiece.
Lucha Libertaria i used to see them mentioned in the same sentence in magazines. In the same racks at record stores (remember when those were common?). It’s crazy Extreme never made it big if we assume it’s just talent that matters. They came too late.
Extreme 1: The first time I heard this I thought "wow" who is that playing guitar? The lyrics are silly and pander to teenage boys but thought, Nuno Bettencount is a star. Then they released Pornograffitti, and Nuno puts on an absolute guitar clinic on every track....as if Eddie Van Halen joined Red Hot Chili Peppers. III Sides is a masterpiece. I think they are really channeling Queen on this album......beautiful, diverse and mature lyrics to match. The whole band is so obviously talented at this point. III Sides in my fav Extreme album, very underrated. Punchline is different but I still really like it. This is an angry bitter album and it's harsh production reflects that.....perhaps an answer to the music industry at the time...see Cynical and Hip Today. I really like this band, Thank you Pete!!
Wow... It's crazy how tastes can be different. My favorite Extreme album is Waiting for the punchline. Indeed, very different from the 3 previous records, but every album of Extreme is different from the other, right? So to me, WFTP is groovy, funky, bluesy, recorded without any computer tinkering. They played together and live during the recordings. The sound is raw, pure. I love this album. But you're right, they hadn't been known for what they really are, even if MTW remains a beautiful song and Hole Hearted a fucking great track.

Pete, I'm with you on Waiting For the Punchline. I think the songs are great. I was never much of a grunge guy, so I wore that one and the Skid Row record out in '95.
Waiting for the Punchline is a criminally underrated album. I hate grunge, but it may have been the best thing to happen to 80s metal. It gave us Punchline, the eponymous Crue, Ultraphobic & Belly to Belly (Warrant), Carnival of Souls (Kiss), Pull (Winger), Whipped (Faster Pussycat), Dysfunctional (Dokken), Violent New Breed (Shotgun Messiah)...all very good, heavy, underrated albums.
I have LOVED Extreme since the club days before the first record. And its REALLY hard for me to pick a fav, or a worst, as I love everything they have put out. I probably would pick their newer material over the older material, and I played the older material out.... IDK 5. Extreme (debut) 4. Pornografitti 3. Waiting for the Punchline 2. Saudades de Rock 1. 3 Sides. And any one of these can swap with any other place, any day with me. I only put the first record last because I feel their songwriting really matured as they went along. Each guy brought their thing to the band and they are a perfect mix.Way too underrated.
A massively underrated band, Pornografitti and III Sides are superb and rate up with the best. They are Queen’s favourite band, Brian May raves about Nuno’s playing.
3 sides is one of the best concept albums of all time. It came out at the wrong time, when grunge was overblown and killed music for a whole decade. NB one of the best guitar players of all time.
Ignacio Ruiz you may be right that it came out at a bad time I’m not too sure, but my line of thinking is that the album was probably a bit too complex for the average rock fan. It was very progressive sounding, it was a concept album and the theme was mature given its political nature. The grunge era had many politically motivated albums, but three sides took it to the next level as far as technical brilliancy. Some thing grunge was sorely lacking. That’s why I think the album went over many rock fans heads.
No pun/Extremely talented band that are hit or miss in their short,musical catalog! Three Sides....very innovative, their debut....rock solid & my favorite! Looking forward to the ranking of the WINGER catalog....despite all the haters. Bevis,Butthead,Lars....I'm 👀 @ you!!!
I'd like to see a list ranking the Great White albums. IMO, one of the truly underrated bands of the genre. These days, all they're known for is a cover song (Once Bitten Twice Shy) and the Rhode Island fire. But they were a damn fine set of musicians in their heyday.
Jack Russell was one helluva singer! And Mark Kendall a very tasty, bluesy guitar player.......tragic-what happened to them, but a lot of great material! Peace!
I really enjoyed the first album when it came out and then went completely mad for Pornograffitti. I was obsessed with them for 18 months but after More than Words hit, I saw them live and just went right off them and never really came back but I still have a soft spot for the debut album which has some fun VH quality to it. Nuno is a monster though, and at one point he was the very centre of the known guitar universe.

"Waiting For The Punchline" breathes... so much honesty and passion. It's very "live". Excellent album. I love the tones on this record. Nuno continued down said path with "Schizophonic"... which is also excellent. People that dig these albums will love Population One, Mourning Widows and Dramagods. "Pornograffit" is killer but very samey to me. I'd like to hear it with less processing. Great songs... "III Sides To Every Story" is one of the best albums ever made. Period. :) Not a bad album in this discography. I love VHIII also... just sayin'
By the way, Pete, I'd like to ask for a couple of bands that I'd love yo see in your Ranking the albums videos, but I'm not sure if you like them: Bon Jovi, WASP, Twisted Sister, White Lion, Bryan Adams, H.E.A.T., Crashdiet, Vega and Tyketto. And, do you know the spanish thrash metal band Angelus Apatrida, in my opinion they are one of the best pure thrash metal bands nowadays. Would love a ranking the albums of Angelus Apatrida too. bye!

I love Extreme. For me, the 2 best are Pornograffitti and 3 Sides To Every Story. I would put them as 1A and 1B. 3 Sides for when I'm in more of a serious thinking type of mood....Pornograffitti for when I just wanna feel good, I think Pornografffitti is just one of the most fun albums to listen to, imo. I consider both of these masterpieces. Too bad a LOT of folks think of this band as "More Than Words" and the "other guy who made the shit Van Halen album" These guys are very talented and it's a shame. Their performance at Wembley in '92 for the Freddie Mercury tribute was amazing, imo.
They did four or five nights at Hammersmith Odeon(with King Of The Hill opening) in October 91',I remember a bunch of us going,being blown away and then I remember locking myself out of the house and 'sleeping' in the garage because I was leery of waking the old man...great days, unfortunately my friend Mikey(who was the biggest Nuno freak) is no longer with us RIP
At university my place was broken into and my speakers were stolen. When I got replacements I remember cranking "There is No God" to let the neighborhood (and local thieves) that I was back. An album tied to a sad time in life.
III Sides to Every Story is brilliant. They could teach a college class on that album alone. Thanks for taking the time to discuss it.

Yeah!! Winger!! I really love Winger and the Kip Winger solo albums. Winger is, in my opinion, another perfect example of an underrated band.

Love Extreme; saw then in early Nineties opening for Bon Jovi; very underrated band, great Harmonies and Nuno Bettencourt is soooo underrated; Cherone a great performer and Vocalist. Saw Cherone with Van Halen in late Nineties and although i didnt like Van Halen 3, he did the other Van Halen material very well. I only have the first 3 studio albums and the more recent live album, i rank them in order

Their debut album it's curiously their best record, almost a masterpiece within its scene. That mixture between Hard Rock, Funk, Country, Heavy Metal, power ballads, multiple armonizing vocals, incredible guitar work, groovy and magnificent drum presence and that amazing bass. Oh man, what an album. Maybe it hasn't the best lyrics of all time, but in a general point of view that album is a gold classic for me. Wow i think Waiting For The Punchline is a KILLER CD with some excellent variety -------"There is no god, Cynical" (1 of my favorite songs by them, go play that song right now and listen how kick ass it is!! ) then some slower blues based stuff like" leave me alone" (Garys singing with such emotion) and Naked (Nunos playing so tasty!) i think Hip today was not the best idea for a single but a solid song, "Tell me something i dont know", "Evilangalist" (which sounds like a Zeppelin tune) .... Mike Mangini (whos a beast of drummer) is on 4 or 5 tracks on this CD.. I love this CD, go give this CD another spin of you havent in a while!...... Im serious
I would 3 sides as #1, Pornograffitti as #2, WFTP as #3, Extreme as #4 and Saudes as #5 ----- No bad CDs no matter how you rank them - excellent band, with great harmonies, tight rythym section with bass and drum section, Garys vocals and of cpurse the the AMAZING Nuno on guitar, very underrated band IMO

The only two he might have overlooked was Motley Crue 'S/T' (w/ John Corabi) and Dream Theater's 'Images And Words'.

Played 3 sides to death when it came out. Listened to it a couple of weeks ago and it is still as great and relevant as ever. Just timeless. Everyone, check out how they opened the Freddie Mercury tribute at Wembley back in the day. FANTASTIC!!!! And yes, reviews of Winger but also Stryper Please!!!
What a great list of 90's albums Rich. I never jumped on the grunge bandwagon but kept listening to all those bands. You know: Tesla, Ratt, Slaughter, Winger, Skid Row, Cinderella, White Lion, Warrant, Firehouse, Great White, Giant, Whitesnake, etc. etc. So cool that you will do a show on Winger!!! And you know what, I will revisit Extreme, I guess I did give up on them and never gave them their due respect.
Awesome band in every way-get ALL their stuff and prepare to be blown away by Nuno Bettencourt-sick riffs and jaw-dropping solos! Pornograffitti should be your first purchase. Peace.
Gary has always had one of the most underrated voices...he never gets talked about enough for how solid his voice is.....and Extreme too is also an underrated band, for me they have always been Queen jr...they rock

Very interesting discussion guys! My list is identical to Pete's except I would change 5 with 4 although your point regarding Punchline's sound is a good one. Might need to re listen to that album in fact as it has been a while. Definitely agree on 3 sides, what a masterpiece! God knows how many times I have tried to turn my friends to that album ! Overall great band, one of my fav in fact. Not a large discography but man not even a bad album!

Absolutely listened to this album. At first, and I believe it was a mistake, was to listen to it in bits and pieces here and there rather than as a complete album. But later listenings put me to mind that this is one of those albums that seems much better listened to as a whole. And that way, I found it much more memorable in all ways - composition, performance, lyrical content, etc. So many thanks for recommending this record and especially for following up recently. Feel free to recommend more if time permits. I am always interested in listening to music new to my ears - even if it is not brand new on the calendar.

I had a mixtape back in the mid-90's (I probably still have it somewhere) of a program I had taped from a radio station. It had this awesome music used during the outro to a commercial break, and it stayed floating around in my brain for years. When I popped in Waiting For the Punchline, and Track #6 came on, I was like, "Holy s**t! There it is." I'm talking about "Midnight Express," that tasty, badass instrumental on the album.
You guys sold me when you brought up Queen, and I've always loved "More Than Words" (sue me.) Picked up all five albums shortly after this video aired. III Sides is a masterwork, musically, conceptually and lyrically. Pornograffiti is a masterwork, too.
The production on WFTP doesn't bother me too much, and the songs are great. The debut probably won't get many points for lyrical genius (I love KISS and Aerosmith, so I'm used to a fair share of silly, cringe lyrics), but the catchy "Wind Me Up," the King's X-ish "Watching, Waiting" and the gorgeous "Rock A Bye Bye" are my faves. Saudades is a great reunion album.
All five albums are great, actually. Interesting how, as each album progressed, the darker the lyrical themes became (with the debut being the lightest of the bunch.)

Great show and great point about 1990-1995 albums from great bands that then took a while to recover. I would throw in Kansas Freaks of Nature from 1995. It's my all time favorite album from the band, but did not do well in the charts and seemed to take them a while to recover. Hi Pete how about ranking the albums for Enchant, greeat prog rock band from San Francisco with Ted Leonard from Spock's Beard on vocals?

III sides is the one for me. I love when bands expand their sound and ideas and they did that on this record. Waiting for the Punchline is really underrated. Bands from from the 80's produced many amazing records that went unnoticed while grunge were ruling the world like Waiting for the Punchline, Motley Crue with Corabi, Vince Neil's Carved in Stone (i know people won't agree but that record is very creative and the production kills), Cinderella Still Clinbing, Tesla Bust A Nut, Warrant Dog eat Dog and many more.

Coming back to this video with some renewed interest in Extreme due to the new album and single that was just released. After a fresh listen, here is my list:
1. Waiting for the Punchline (Maybe it's because I was a 90s teenager who was also into grunge, but I love this record. The production doesn't bother me and each song is a bit of a surprise.)
2. Pornograffiti (Fun as hell, brilliant writing, great production)
3. Three Sides to Every Story (This might be their best-written album, but long albums exhaust me. I just have to be in the mood.)
4. Saudades de Rock (Interesting comeback record with plenty of variety)
5. Extreme (This is a great introduction to the band and while there are hints of what would come later, it just scratches the surface for me. "Play With Me" is actually the first Extreme song I ever heard from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure!)
Also, as far as Cherone goes, I'm also in the minority of people who love VHIII. It's not a perfect record, but there are some bangers on it and I still revisit that album frequently. Cherone was great on the tour.
Great rankings guys. Been a big fan of this band ever since the debut. For once I’m going to side with the co-captain Rich. Hoping that the band will add more albums in the near future.
When I saw them they were playing about a 3,000 seat theatre in Fresno, CA where I grew up and saw lots of concerts in my youth. The opening band I believe was Saigon Kick who also had a big ballad hit at the time. Can't remember what it was off the top of my head, but if you listened to rock radio in the early 90's you would remember it.
Joe Jorgensen ~ The Saigon Kick song is “Love Is On The Way” from their second album, The Lizard. It’s my favorite SK elpee. (Although you can’t really go wrong with any of their first three platters.)
Davey Cretin yes now I remember it. I remember being fairly impressed with them live even though I only new that one song. I believe their other stuff was also more hard rock then one would think from the ballad. I do remember they covered David Bowie’s Major Tom. Must be one of the few shows from that era I wasn’t messed up at as I seem to remember it well. Lol
Joe Jorgensen ~ That’s on their third album, Water. By that time the singer had split and their guitarist took over the lead vocal chair 🪑. Jason Bieler. I think the two cats had a BIG falling out which lead to his departure.
Davey Cretin I’m sure your right but I’m pretty sure they were touring the big hit at the time and had the lead singer from the video because they did that song. Perhaps it was in their live set before the cut it on an album.
Joe Jorgensen ~ It was probably in their set before they cut it for their third CD 💿. Without their lead singer in the band anymore, Bieler was probably a little short on material for that album. If he didn’t put it on himself, maybe the record company, Atlantic, recommended a cover song. EVERYONE was doing it back then... it was de rigueur.

Hello everyone, Rich has become my favourite guest. Nuno Bettencourt is a guitar hero, not a surprise that Rihanna got him on tour. First two albums are a must have for every rocker. Funny thing for me, Hole Hearted is a better ballad than More than Words. Agree with the analysis, Warrant was a great band for me that got bad blood because of the Cherry Pie song.

I've been a pub manager most of my life. In 1991 I took over a pub which had been closed for a while. Needed some redecoration. Pornograffitti was the soundtrack to me and the wife and a few mates painting walls and ceilings during the night until the early hours. Bit of Vai and Satriani in there too

III Sides is my favourite by a fair stretch--always liked it but didn't truly appreciate it until later. I would love to see Extreme re-issue this on vinyl: 3 x 10" records, one each for the 'Yours', 'Mine', and 'Truth' sides--and including 'Don't Leave Me Alone' which was not included on the CD release (it is on the cassette though). And make it green vinyl (A guy can dream, right?)
They made it a green vinyl I own it and they are numbered.

Shadow Life is the Dokken album you're trying to remember and it isn't good but its predecessor Dysfunctional is awesome. And yay for Winger I really like that band.
The idea that Extreme and Poison were on the same “genre” tells you all you need to know. Extreme were too smart for their time. 3 sides is a masterpiece.
They were not really. Extreme is a Hard Rock/Funk band, Poison is Glam/Pop Metal.
Lucha Libertaria i used to see them mentioned in the same sentence in magazines. In the same racks at record stores (remember when those were common?). It’s crazy Extreme never made it big if we assume it’s just talent that matters. They came too late.

Extreme 1: The first time I heard this I thought "wow" who is that playing guitar? The lyrics are silly and pander to teenage boys but thought, Nuno Bettencount is a star. Then they released Pornograffitti, and Nuno puts on an absolute guitar clinic on every track....as if Eddie Van Halen joined Red Hot Chili Peppers. III Sides is a masterpiece. I think they are really channeling Queen on this album......beautiful, diverse and mature lyrics to match. The whole band is so obviously talented at this point. III Sides in my fav Extreme album, very underrated. Punchline is different but I still really like it. This is an angry bitter album and it's harsh production reflects that.....perhaps an answer to the music industry at the time...see Cynical and Hip Today. I really like this band, Thank you Pete!!

Wow... It's crazy how tastes can be different. My favorite Extreme album is Waiting for the punchline. Indeed, very different from the 3 previous records, but every album of Extreme is different from the other, right?
So to me, WFTP is groovy, funky, bluesy, recorded without any computer tinkering. They played together and live during the recordings. The sound is raw, pure. I love this album.
But you're right, they hadn't been known for what they really are, even if MTW remains a beautiful song and Hole Hearted a fucking great track.

Pete, I'm with you on Waiting For the Punchline. I think the songs are great. I was never much of a grunge guy, so I wore that one and the Skid Row record out in '95.
Waiting for the Punchline is a criminally underrated album. I hate grunge, but it may have been the best thing to happen to 80s metal. It gave us Punchline, the eponymous Crue, Ultraphobic & Belly to Belly (Warrant), Carnival of Souls (Kiss), Pull (Winger), Whipped (Faster Pussycat), Dysfunctional (Dokken), Violent New Breed (Shotgun Messiah)...all very good, heavy, underrated albums.
Always liked Extreme, Nuno is one of my favorite players.
I love 3 Sides. My favourite of all of them. I think it was just the wrong time for them - late 80s, early 90s.
I have LOVED Extreme since the club days before the first record. And its REALLY hard for me to pick a fav, or a worst, as I love everything they have put out. I probably would pick their newer material over the older material, and I played the older material out.... IDK

A massively underrated band, Pornografitti and III Sides are superb and rate up with the best. They are Queen’s favourite band, Brian May raves about Nuno’s playing.
3 sides is one of the best concept albums of all time. It came out at the wrong time, when grunge was overblown and killed music for a whole decade. NB one of the best guitar players of all time.
Ignacio Ruiz you may be right that it came out at a bad time I’m not too sure, but my line of thinking is that the album was probably a bit too complex for the average rock fan. It was very progressive sounding, it was a concept album and the theme was mature given its political nature. The grunge era had many politically motivated albums, but three sides took it to the next level as far as technical brilliancy. Some thing grunge was sorely lacking. That’s why I think the album went over many rock fans heads.
They were my first Concert ever 2014.
No pun/Extremely talented band that are hit or miss in their short,musical catalog! Three Sides....very innovative, their debut....rock solid & my favorite! Looking forward to the ranking of the WINGER catalog....despite all the haters. Bevis,Butthead,Lars....I'm 👀 @ you!!!
I'd like to see a list ranking the Great White albums. IMO, one of the truly underrated bands of the genre. These days, all they're known for is a cover song (Once Bitten Twice Shy) and the Rhode Island fire. But they were a damn fine set of musicians in their heyday.
Jack Russell was one helluva singer! And Mark Kendall a very tasty, bluesy guitar player.......tragic-what happened to them, but a lot of great material! Peace!

I really enjoyed the first album when it came out and then went completely mad for Pornograffitti. I was obsessed with them for 18 months but after More than Words hit, I saw them live and just went right off them and never really came back but I still have a soft spot for the debut album which has some fun VH quality to it. Nuno is a monster though, and at one point he was the very centre of the known guitar universe.

"Waiting For The Punchline" breathes... so much honesty and passion. It's very "live". Excellent album. I love the tones on this record. Nuno continued down said path with "Schizophonic"... which is also excellent. People that dig these albums will love Population One, Mourning Widows and Dramagods.
"Pornograffit" is killer but very samey to me. I'd like to hear it with less processing. Great songs...

I love Extreme. For me, the 2 best are Pornograffitti and 3 Sides To Every Story. I would put them as 1A and 1B. 3 Sides for when I'm in more of a serious thinking type of mood....Pornograffitti for when I just wanna feel good, I think Pornografffitti is just one of the most fun albums to listen to, imo. I consider both of these masterpieces. Too bad a LOT of folks think of this band as "More Than Words" and the "other guy who made the shit Van Halen album" These guys are very talented and it's a shame. Their performance at Wembley in '92 for the Freddie Mercury tribute was amazing, imo.
Saw them in the o2 academy 2017 I think, they were stupendous.
They did four or five nights at Hammersmith Odeon(with King Of The Hill opening) in October 91',I remember a bunch of us going,being blown away and then I remember locking myself out of the house and 'sleeping' in the garage because I was leery of waking the old man...great days, unfortunately my friend Mikey(who was the biggest Nuno freak) is no longer with us RIP
At university my place was broken into and my speakers were stolen. When I got replacements I remember cranking "There is No God" to let the neighborhood (and local thieves) that I was back. An album tied to a sad time in life.
