Madonna's version brought me here, and I can see why she loved it. It's awesome. She just turned it into a mainstream track that would fit Music album better.
[Verse 1] Don't tell me to stop Tell the rain not to drop Tell the wind not to blow Cause you said so; Tell me love isn't true It's just something we do Tell me everything I'm not But don't tell me to stop [Verse 2] Tell the sun not to shine Not to get up this time Let it fall by the way Leave me where I lay; Tell the leaves not to turn But don't tell me I'll learn Take the black off a crow But don't tell me to go [Verse 3] Tell the bed not to lay Like the mouth of a grave Not to stare up at me Like a calf on its knees; Tell me love isn't true It's just something we do Tell me everything I'm not But don't tell me to stop
LOVE, love, love this song! Heard it for the first time last night on Shore 104 (Coastal Blues Hour). Joe Henry is awesome! Thanks a million, Marco Scarpulla, for uploading! Added this to my playlist! Cheers from Vancouver, B.C.!
never heard this before. when you listen to the lyrics you can see why she recorded it. wether she writes or reworks or covers songs she has an amazing track record of producing songs that are considered classic. no one can take that away from here. like her or not.
Lmao that's not how it works. Madonna first heard his version when his wife (her sister) showed it to her. This is the *original* because it was created first & existed first. Madonna based her song off of this. Not the other way around. M's song would not exist without it. You can't cover your own song. Don't be silly lol.
@@solongsuicide9 I think that what Joe's wife gave Madonna was just a super rough demo. Joe recorded his version after she recorded hers.. If I remember correctly, the story goes that she got the demo from her sis, then showed up at XMAS dinner with the final version to show Joe who had no idea she was recording it..
@@CTG4-b3x Adapting someone else's song doesn't make a person a "genuis". Also, she had Mirwais's help. If Madonna was a genuis, she would have written every song of hers by herself and played all the instruments on every single recorded track. She has never done this. She has always had (male) collaborators to help her. A genuis would not need such help.
I have just heard this for the first time.i new the author of this song is Joe henry, but i did not know this demo exists!! So good, so melancholic, i love every note of this version, instrumentation is amasing, this is not a demo version for sure, he recorded this as a full version of a song.
If it hasn't been pointed out, Joe wrote this song, and a couple of songs for Madonna, that he didn't record. Reason? He's married to her sister. I actually like what Madonna did with it, but this one is far more moving, and eerie in a way.
Interestingly this sounds like a Vic Chestnut song which coincidently Joe Henry and Madonna dueted on a vic chestnut song called "Guilty By Association.
@plamenlesev One reason could be because Joe is married to her sister, and heck, perhaps she threw in an idea, but I kinda doubt it, lyrically. Im guessing she wanted it to be more pop, but with some of his eccentricities, and he gave her credit for the idea, then arranged the score for her.
well personally I have ear-room for this AND Madonna's very different version (hardly a 'copy', and certainly less generically straightforward). vive la difference.
@ComingWithTheClouds Joe wrote it for her, then decided to record it himself, and in his eclectic way, he essentially made it 2 different songs.....but yeah, he wrote it for her alone to begin with, so I'm purty sure both versions are his arrangement. Does anyone look into these things before wildly guessing? I mean, even if you don't know...there's this internet thing, where u can find all sorts of stuff :)
WOW is right ! Love, love, love Lizz Wright's cover ! So soulful . . . & sexy ! Perfect match of song, voice, & looks. Love watching her sing ! She's the personification of a "soul singer". Thanks a million for turnin' me on to her ! Cheers ! P.S. Did you view the one with her & Raul Midon singin' STOP at the Lugano Jazz Festival ~ 2012 ? Can't handle watchin' Raul sing, however he sings with soul, too. For the record, I also love this by Joe Henry . . . soulful & sexy in HIS own way.
@SIRinLTHR If "Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis" was sung an octave higher, it would sound like a good Joe Henry song as well. This is really sifting the chaff, to compare the 2. It is an easy comparison to draw, given they have similar darkness and desperate want in their songs. I believe Tom, Joe and Elvis Costello are our greatest living popular music writers, by a long shot, and we should enjoy their output while we have them all, each of them are still recording gems.
The biggest part is that she gave it a chorus which makes it more appropriate for a pop song. This version doesn't really have a lot of tension and release it's more free floating type of song..
Don’t Tell me to Stop by Joe Henry . I Love this song. I heard it on the Sopranos season5 episode
10
Sopranos season 5 episode 10 "cold cuts"
THAT"S where I heard this! :-) Soprano's
Me too. Great song
That's why we gotta live for today!
What you did say?
“What did you say what did you hear!”
As Vito somberly watches the Bing dancers, he's getting nothing from it

He was watching Georgie.
If it weren't Sopranos, I wouldnt have known this song. Thank you Sopranos & Bing. It's like Leonard Cohen "Everybody knows"
Same here
you probably know this song from Madonna under the title “Don’t Tell Me”
Or Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, which everyone thought was a Jeff Buckley or Rufus Wainwright (Shrek soundtrack) song.
Madonna's version brought me here, and I can see why she loved it. It's awesome. She just turned it into a mainstream track that would fit Music album better.
As joe as said. I wrote a tango, and she turned it into a hit! :D
I had no idea that Madonna's song was inspired by this. Just heard this while watching The Sopranos.
This whole album is incredible.
Can you think about it now? Anthony Soprano
That’s why you gotta live for today
The fuqq you say?
Madonna kept the lyrics but she & Mirwais changed the melody. It's weird that it sounds like 2 different songs even tho the words are still the same.
Yes, Thank you "Sopranos Season 5"!
Oh i love it! I heard this playing in the background of a soprano's episode and recognised the song but not the artist. This is a great version.
What an exquisite find, I LOVE the internet! 👍😁 Big thanks to the poster x
[Verse 1]
Don't tell me to stop
Tell the rain not to drop
Tell the wind not to blow
Cause you said so;
Tell me love isn't true
It's just something we do
Tell me everything I'm not
But don't tell me to stop
[Verse 2]
Tell the sun not to shine
Not to get up this time
Let it fall by the way
Leave me where I lay;
Tell the leaves not to turn
But don't tell me I'll learn
Take the black off a crow
But don't tell me to go
[Verse 3]
Tell the bed not to lay
Like the mouth of a grave
Not to stare up at me
Like a calf on its knees;
Tell me love isn't true
It's just something we do
Tell me everything I'm not
But don't tell me to stop

La escuché en Los Sopranos. Es bellísima vla instrumentación extraordinaria.
Wow... Love Madonna's version but this is sexy. Looks like they've collaborated on some decent songs since, and should do it more!

Yeah Madonna really is a genius, egotistical, but still. She did the same thing with her ray of light song.

Not a demo.
Both versions are really cool, each one creates its own and very different atmosphere
Pretty wicked tune. I can picture this song being used in a Tarantino flick, seriously.
Poor Georgie.
glad we all came here from the bing

I love her acoustic live version, have you heard it? It's heavenly.

.
The original song is by the group called "Azra" from ex Yugoslavia and is called "A šta da radim" from 1979.
Prefer this original to Madonna's version
My favorite version is Madonna's acoustic live version, when it's just her little voice and her guitar, it sounds heavenly.
The Sopranos brought me here =) gr8 song.
Sounds like something in a Pulp Fiction movie
Interesting to hear this original version.
Mad respect, believe me- but thank god for Madonna & technology . . .
Bravo!
Is it me or I can hear the verses in this but not in the madonna cover?
married to madges sister
Madonna certainly gave it a tune. This is speaking over a rhythm with Italian jazz instrumentation doing its own thing.
you kick ass big style Joe
@SIRinLTHR There's a link, actually. Same guitar player: Marc Ribot.

I love this music from Madonna's brother-in-law the song inspired Madonna's hit don't tell me
AMOR the Portuguese word for love
AMOR is the Spanish word for Love. Spanish being FAR MORE POPULAR and actually older than portuguese.

Just shows to go ya that the origin of ALL American music is the Blues!
in my case sopranos via wikipedia
so madonna took this masterpiece and turned it into a shitty bubblegum! wow. just like she did to "ray of light"
Madonna screwed it big time
I think that she did a good job with it. Actualy he worked on it with her....so you kind of shitting in your own mouth
Like Joe's version the best!
Bublegum pop? Where. It shows that you are spouting off on something yiu obviously never listened too
Madonna TRANSFORMED this song and created another COMPLETELY different MASTERPIECE!!!!!
(The same goes for Ray of Light)
I love Madonna's version a but can someone explain to me why did she get credited as a co-author of the song?
equality I think its because she rewrote the melody

She re-wrote and co-produced the song.
