Really? I had the opposite experience. The more I learn of the social programs and the values of the NSDAP, the more I think they had some good ideas sprinkled in with the atrocious ones we all know about.
The text of the first verse of the German anthem - the one you mentioned in the video with this infamous 'Deutschland über alles' (Germany above everything else)-line, was misused by the Nazis to set Germany on a pedestal by taking it literally. However the intention of this line wasn't to say that Germany is any better than any other country back in the day, when it was written. At this point in time, Germany was fractured in hundreds of small kingdoms, provinces, church posessions and anyhting in between with nothing akin to a coherent nation. And the nationalists at that time (not to confuse with the national socialists later) just wanted to end this small state madness going on and unify the land to a nation. Thus - Germany - as in the nation of Germany - should be more important than your small sliver of land. So it wasn't that nefarious when it was conceived - and just corrupted beyond recognition by the Nazis later on, as so many other things.
I think in general, most people agree that nationalism to a point is a good thing, but as with all social ideals, there are no defined stops, and you often don't know an idea has gone too far until you've slid well beyond the point of no return.
@@Musikur I think the meaning of 'nationalism' has shifted between the time of the German Revolution in 1848 and the beginning of the Third Reich. Nationalism back then simply promoted one unified country in the German speaking area, instead of a multitude of powerless microstates. It didn't necessarily promote a unified Geramany over other nations.

the real question I wonder about is why english speakers call it "german reich" instead of translating it as "german empire", which is exactly what it means. any empire is called a reich in german. and if you want to call it reich, call it deutsches reich, not german reich. we don't call you the united staaten or great britannien either, do we? calling hitler the führer does have aome logic though, since the nazis insisted that the title was to be used exclusively for hitler among world leaders (although it was and still is used for non-political guides).
@@Ass_of_Amalek I mean I always try to avoid it when talking about tour guides for example I always specify what kind of "Führer" I mean bc otherwise it will sound weird and also leads to weird jokes
@@Ass_of_Amalek Because the "Reich" always means Nazi Germany. It's like an anglicism for then. Emperor Wilhelm II. is also just called "the Kaiser" with which everytime and always Emperor Wilhelm II. is referred to.
@@Ass_of_Amalek That's an interesting one! Firstly, outside of this video you are unlikely to hear an English speaker say "German Reich". In fact, you'll rarely hear "Reich" apart from in the context of "Third Reich". When we say "German Empire" in English, we're referring to the pre-WW1 imperial aspirations of Wilhelm II. So it could be that we're distinguishing that German Empire from the other German Empire. However, when we talk about French history we simply number the French republics in the same way the French do, rather than giving them totally different names. In English, we generally draw a clear distinction between "things that are German" and "things that are Nazi". When I hear "Third Reich" I instantly think "Nazis" rather than "Germans". Same as how when I hear "anschluss", meaning I think "Nazis" rather than German Reunification. Would you as a German use the word anschluss to describe German Reunion? However... disagreeing with both of those concepts I've just said is the fact that for those in military circles the German airforce is always the luftwaffe, both pre-1945 and post-1945, whereas it's rare to hear an English speaker say "armee de l'aire" instead of "French air force". What can I say... we British don't necessarily make consistent rules. There's a joke that if there are too many rules you're in Germany, and if there aren't enough rules you're in France. 😉

My German isn't great, but I'm pretty sure "Reich" more properly translates as "Realm" or "Domain". I believe a better word for empire is "Kaiserreich".
Empire comes from the latin word Imperium, I think it is a suitable translation for "Reich". Realm is also a good translation. The noun "Reich" is a general term for a geographical sphere of influence, governed by a ruler. I'm not so sure about "domain", but it depends on the exact definition of the word in english. "Kaiserreich" is a compound word "Kaiser" and "Reich" to strongly point out that you speak of a territory ruled by a "Kaiser"). (fun fact, "Reich" is close related to the english word rich)
@@drakon5076 Realm seems to be pretty accurate actually. Austria is called Österreich and France is called Frankreich in German. In France's case "Realm of the Franks" if you will.

We had a petty officer (like a sergeant) named Reich, who was from Alabama. He was a second class and then made it to first class. We called him Clyde for some reason as his first name was actually Paul. A guy named Mike Harmon from Waukesha, Wisconsin wrote as graffiti in the rough log- " If Clyde gets busted back to second class, we will have witnessed the rise and fall of the turd Reich. Thanks, Simon - very nicely done. Two aspects to add. Frankish / Aquitaine / Basque, Italian / Romansch, Maltese, Germanic (Hochdeutsch / Plattdüütsch), Magyar, South- and North-Slavic, Montenegrin, Greek, etceteræ. You mentioned the “Interregnum” of the 19th Century, with its strivings to amicably unify Germanophones, trying to halt the endless feuds between “royal houses” (Stauffers, Hapsburgs, Guelfs, etc.) That period also saw the egalitarian Revolution of 1848 (fizzled, unfortunately…), and de Gabineau’s delusional Aryanist lies that Hitler & Co. later built upon.

I've been wondering about this since the past couple of months after watching a few WWII documentaries but I was too lazy to google and read about it. Thank you for this video!
I've been away from the channel for a little while and MY GOD, THAT BEARD. Very impressive
$12.50 a box in Canada plus shipping via DHL? I love your channel, but Magic Spoon can EFF right the EFF off.
Cardboard must be expensive to turn into cereal.
Eek no wonder the discount is 4 quid ish
Had to pause and go get more magic spoon. Get the *Birthday Cake Bowl Bundle.* Love it! Can't wait! (Hey, simple pleasures are HUGE when you're down with Covid!)
Oof, get well soon.
@@TRC2002 What's a scam? Cereal? Okayyy.
Or the bowl and spoon the birthday cake flavor comes with? I don't get it
Or are you a Covid-Denier? Because this ish is real and it sucks!
Business Blaze again creeping into other channels and it's amazing.
I dunno seems like he's playing it up in response to the comments. He's my favourite presenter because of his well spoken professionalism, not forced jokes.
@@skottlee8959 lmfao, his professionalism is what is forced... He even says so, he blatantly says in Business Blaze episodes that he doesnt get paid by youtube for the videos because he's too profane, then goes on to say "I DONT FUCKING CARE, I DONT NEED THEIR MONEY NORE DO I NEED YOURS, WHY DO YOU THINK I MADE THIS CHANNEL I CAN DO WHAT EVER I WANT" Soooooo yea the jokes on Business Blaze are not forced at all and the fact you think they are just goes to show you how much of a "pup" you are...
It's hard to watch other of his channels in a straight face after being a Business Blaze fans.
It's the crazy clone. He's impersonating the others.
@@makinwaves8147 Of course his professionalism is forced. That's what professionals do and he does it well. The fact that you enjoy cringey comedy has very little to do with my point.
Thank you so much for uploading this video. It is helping me get through the pandemic!
THIS is why I SO LOVE this Channel! Great History stuff! PLEASE keep these going!

Odessa machine... Yea,thanks Mr ellon musk
@@drakon5076 Realm seems to be pretty accurate actually. Austria is called Österreich and France is called Frankreich in German. In France's case "Realm of the Franks" if you will.
If it's not great then STFU with you pretend knowledgeable comment."I'm pretty sure" that's a better idea.

The start of this video had me convinced I had wandered into a BB video by mistake. Simon's going crazy.

Business Blaze is creeping into the other Simon clones like a programming virus. It must be Danny trying to break out of the basement. Or the cocaine is still in his system. Allegedly.
His plug for Magic Sppoon almost had me buying.
I mean, I know that you can't get everything completely right but some mistakes are minor, yet still important. For example @6:46.. Friedrich 3. had the Title "König in Preußen" (King in Prussia) not king of Prussia.
What’s the difference ? /gen
@@pb9611 The difference is that Poland had feudal sovereignty over this territory until 1772, only after it was abolished by the partition of Poland he was allowed to call himself King of Prussia. Before that he was "only" the king in Prussia
King of Prussia has a big ass mall in PA

My 10th grade world history teacher was terrible.
The walk to Canossa in 1077 wasnt Heinrich the Sixth but Heinrich the Fourth.
You are right! It was a brilliant move by Henry IV to force the Pope to remove Henry's excommunication and also keep the Pope from continuing to meet with the rebelling German nobles to officially remove Henry IV as emperor. It had to be one of the most dramatic episodes of this period of medieval history.
Once again something i didn't know i needed to know
9:08 - fairly certain that should be "ascribed", but wanted to say thanks for giving me a 20 minute detour into the depths of using subscribe vs ascribe when dealing with quality/object in the passive. Thank you Magic Spoon!
Dunno if this has been commented on before, but I'd like to compliment Simon on the evolution of his look, stage presence and overall production of these videos!!
Magic Spoon is actually really good though. Got the sampler 4-pack and I've almost cleaned out all the boxes already

Hi
When I was in the US Navy in the 1970s in the engine room of a ship, we had what we called a "rough log" where on every watch, info would be entered and later to be put in the official records. On the end sheets of the log there would be graffiti entered by anyone who would be on watch. Jokes, insults, general bitching, what have you. I've never forgotten that.

Thank very much Mr.Whistler. I asked this question once before in high school.
0:38 the sports scientist in me is a little triggered by hearing "carbs are bad"😂😂 Carbs and also fats are necessary for your training, you don't make gains by just eating low carb and high protein, you need a calorie surplus to build muscle and you also need a certain amount of carbs and fats, just eating protein won't get you anywhere.
Sorry for being a smarta$$, I'll see myself out😂
Stay. Its pleasing to see some people on UA-cam actually talk sense
He legally has to read the talking points. On Business Blaze, you can see he almost scoffs at the line "GMO free" since he's done so many episodes about how that whole claim is bullshit.

I was eating cereal and thinking "I wish there was a breakfast cereal I could eat that wasn't full of sugar" and then somehow decided to pick this video. Sometimes the world works in strange ways
Thanks, Simon - very nicely done. Two aspects to add. I’m the extant non-von Ritter (allodial Knight) of a line dating back to the early 11th Century and the Crusades, but also of Nemetes origin back to times of the pre-imperial Roman Republic. As family lore has it, our clan fought on BOTH sides in the Teutoberg Forest! The Carolingian / Ottonian Dynasties encompassed many peoples and languages.
