For me it's the phobia to loud sudden noises which multiple layers of ear protection doesnt help when the vibrations ring through your body. Not everyone is going to love shooting, but I agree that everyone should learn gun safety
I am a firearms instructor in South Carolina, and have done something similar to this for quite a while - I will do a FREE 3-hour basic safety class and take any newbie out to the range, we can use my firearms and ammo to let them experience it

I don't think people are wary of guns because they don't know that they are fun to play with. I think they are more concerned about the level of irresponsible behaviour they already witness in the community and how much worse it would be with deadly weapons, and the likelihood that somebody they love will use a gun to end their own life.

That's because gun culture ultra emphasizes respect for the power and gun safety above all else. For the other thing...
