The Battle of Evermore" is a folk duet sung by Robert Plant and Sandy Denny, featured on Led Zeppelin's untitled 1971 album, commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV. The song's instrumentation features acoustic guitar and mandolin playing, while the lyrics allude to J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings
Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, a Must Watch for context. Sandy Denny is the Female Vocalist. Robert was fascinated by Tolkien's writings. Page on Mandolin.
As others have mentioned, Sandy Denny from the folk group Fairport Convention sang along with Robert. The members of Fairport and Zep were friends and Sandy is the only other person to sing on a Zep song. She even received her own sigil on the inside of the album. Robert has always been interested in Lord Of The Rings, histories, various mythologies and folklores, especially Celtic/Welsh so, in addition to lyrics inspired by Lord Of The Rings, he also mentions "Avalon" which comes from King Arthur legends. Avalon comes from the Celtic word "abal" which means apple and Avalon was said to be a beautiful paradise island full of wild apple trees (the lyric "the apples of the valley hold the seeds of happiness"), grapevines, and wheat. This song is an ethereal fantasy/fairytale so when would you listen to it? I don't know, maybe before you go to bed when you need something delicate and soothing, maybe a time when you're pondering a situation and your next steps, maybe a time for daydreaming. Who knows but it's definitely a mood.
Back in the 70's my friends and I would sneak in to the old L.A Zoo in Griffith Park after they removed the animals to the new zoo and would play this song in the polar bear cave, the acoustics there was like no other, best times of my life 🤟😜
Pain, fury and devastation from Led Zeppelin. One of the most important recordings of all time. One of the best duet vocals of all time. I would love to hear a different version that ends much darker. This is the standard story where the prince slays the dragon and everything is great. So many bands did this. Tired of songs with fairy tale endings. How about the real world where everything is lost..
This band did things no other band did... They paved the way for others to be brave... To express themselves. Such a magical song. The four symbols album is so different.
When would you listen to it? When you were tucked toasty into bed reading "Lord of the Rings" JRR Tolkien's trilogy that Robert (and I... and my kids and anyone who lived in the 60s) loved, and is indeed what the song refers to ringwraiths and all. And yes- co-vocalist sublime Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention, Strawbs, and Fotheringay matches harmonies exquisitely with Plant and JP on mandolin. Be safe, BisMatik- peace.
One of my favourite Zep songs. This song had a lot of Lord of the Rings references. Everybody back then read these books. I read them three times myself. Also, there is a reference to the battle between day and night as well. As mentioned there was a guest female vocalist on this song. When would I listen to this? When I was just chilling listening to music and having a toke while listening was pretty normal LOL Also, they did make these books into three movies. You will get the drift if you watch them. There are Zep songs like Ramble On which had some Lord of the Rings references.
That’s exactly why this song is sooo dam good. It’s they’re harmony, just beautiful Bizmatik!!! Talk about some crazy lyrics to. Thx again Bro!! And this is a song that Led fans want someone to experience for the first time, your right Bizmatik maybe not a song you’ll listen to over again, but to hear it at least once is a cool experience.
Its about the sky as the sun sets, the moon and stars rise and move across the sky, then the dawn. "The sky is filled with good and bad that mortals never know".
Robert had to have been a Viking in his previous life. He is a poetic singer and loves old history. These guys were so ahead of their time musically and lyrically. No other band like them!
You don't need a certain vibe to listen to any Zeppelin music, you just play and enjoy, other than a couple of songs on Coda, every studio track they released are 4 or 5 star songs, there is no other group that can come close to that percentage of greatness, not Pink Floyd nor the Beatles, Zeppelin's entire catalog are hits ... btw the second vocal you heard is Sandy Denny, and you should most definitely listen to this song several more times, then you'll start to appreciate and understand Led Zeppelin music more than you already do 😀 👍
Both were huge Tolkien fans. And Jimmy was a well known occultist. This song is basically a fairytale. And they ever reference the ring wraiths riding in black. It's ultimately about light triumphant over Evil
K, so everyone covered pretty much everything in the comments already so all I'm gonna say is GREAT reaction! I love how you really "feel" Zep's music! Now... when you said this was a different version of Robert's voice (you know it was a woman singing with him) and you like it when you hear people do different things vocally or have unique vocals, it immediately made me think of my favorite singer/band. I checked and I can't believe it took me this long to realize you've NEVER heard my favorite group of the 90's!! I'll even go as far as to say, if I was only allowed to listen to one band for the rest of my life, the choice would be TOUGH but it would be PEARL JAM.... Please add to your "to-do" list "BLACK" Live MTV UNPLUGGED by Pearl Jam. It's INTENSE!! the "MTV Unplugged" series was awesome back in the 90's and is exactly as it sounds.... all instruments were completely unplugged. (that was the premise of the show!) It may've been unplugged but the musicians brought it in those shows!! It's nuts!! Great reaction!! :)
OH F YES THANK YOU!!!!!! i got this LP when i was 6 years old and THIS is my favorite song on this LP... the aucoustics are a combo of Jimmy P and John PG. Sandy Denny is from another british band called Fairport Convention. Whenver they did this song live John Paul Jones does the backing vocals
It's an old Celtic passege it's about the time of reconning the war will be waged between Good and Evil ... Every man must participate in order for good to prevail so life will go on
The lyrics are clearly inspired by the various works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Basically, the armies of the Dark Lord are coming (which is really bad)... so all the people of the countryside need to drop what they're doing (farming and what-not), and run for their lives, "Run to the Hills!" (Iron Maiden)... don't even take the time to lock your house, just f-ing run! Basically like the story of the invasion of Rohan in Lord of the Rings... the second movie, if you haven't seen them... Then he throws in a dragon toward the end, like in The Hobbit... Oh, and some Ringwraiths... 😳
This is not my favorite song on this (very good) album but it's a wonderful change of pace. And let's face reality, I've never heard a bad LZ song. I could have missed that 1 bad song because I can't say I've heard everything LZ has recorded, but I sorta doubt that there's a bad LZ song. Biz said he will react to Stairway from the album. Good move if the only version heard is the concert version (Song Remains the Same concert?). I think Page's guitar solo is best on the studio version. As with most great guitarists, they improvise in concert but nothing beats what Page laid down on the studio version IMO.
Of course you upload a Zeppelin song when I can't watch it!! LOL!! My baby boy (my oldest one) is home for the weekend! Be back later to watch and comment!! ;) ;)
Well, when would I play this? I guess at a party -- make the whole album part of the "soundtrack" for the party. [ and, of course, listening to LZ while chilling or on a drive is dope, too ]
You didn't spot that it's too different singers, two different voices (Robert Plant and Sandy Denny) sometimes in a call and response mode and sometimes harmonising with each other. The lyrics are inspired by 'The Lord of the Rings' which Robert was a fan of. This is essentially a folk song in style. When it says Robert Plant and Jimmy Page were the writers, it would mostly be Robert writing the lyrics and Jimmy writing the music. I sensed it brought you out of your comfort zone. The end lyrics were 'Bring it back'. Now you begin to discover that Led Zeppelin is not just a heavy music band. They had a variety of styles in their songs.
When people look back at zeppelin they expect heavy metal, they were a rock band they invented heavy rock with all the folk acoustic and mythology that goes with it, want heavy metal put iron maidens greatest hits on

Yup
Zeppelin music doesn't age.
agree
Probably the Led Zeppelin song I've listened to most. It's breathtaking.
BOOM!!! Nailed it!
The reason why Plante’s vocal seem so high…is because it’s a female voice named Sandy Denny doing a duet with Robert….
The back vocal is Sandy Denny and she was the only guest vocalist ever to appear on a Led Zeppelin album.
It's the daily battle between day and night. Only song where they used a female voice. Always loved this song.
Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, a Must Watch for context. Sandy Denny is the Female Vocalist. Robert was fascinated by Tolkien's writings. Page on Mandolin.
It was actually Jone Paul Jones playing the Mandolin. Jimmy played guitar.

Much of Led Zeppelin's music is based on classic literature and ancient folk tales from Celtic and Norse mythology.

Two great voices here, to bad they never collaborated again. Rip Sandy Denny.

Robert Plant sings the part of the narrator and Sandy Denney sings the part of the town crier
