I am not a firefighter. But I have a 24' extension ladder I need to raise safely and do not want to hurt myself. Your video is very helpful to me and has great tips. You probably saved me a 911 call. Thank You for all you fire fighters do every day. Very much appreciated!

Maybe you didn't notice, but this is a fire academy class. They are learning about ladders the government way. Which is how they will be tested. Of course once they get a real job it just isn't done this way.

Let's have a school on ladders . . . those being the ones used by "professional firefighters" and those used by "professional painters." First, a fire department ladder is designed to be heavier in order to handle the average weight of one or possibly two firefighters in their full gear, approximately 185lbs/FF. Secondly, they are not only made to handle the weight of a firefighter, but also a potential victim needing rescue. Thirdly, they are made to withstand (to a limit) heavy fire conditions and a great deal of fire scene abuse.
So let's assume we do a little research before we make bold remarks about firefighters being "idiots, weak, and pussies" and examine the actual weight of our contested ladders. A 24' Fire Department Extension Ladder weighs approximately 72lbs. The FD 35' 2-fly Extension Ladder weighs approximately 122lbs and is rated for a max load of 750lbs. Now let's compare the weight of the "Professional Painter's" ladder. . . A standard 24' extension ladder weighs 46lbs and the 36' 2-fly extension weighs 80lbs, and a 40' extension ladder weighs 89lbs. Do we see any apparent differences, without going into greater detail?
Now I don't want to negate the professional painter's very obvious strength and know how on the subject of a painter's ladders. You all work incredibly hard and I personally would not want to do your job, so I honestly respect you and your profession.
I would just like to see you dress out in our gear, throw the ladder, carry our tools, breach the window, and potentially rescue a victim down one of our ladders under often very extreme conditions . . . ie. fire, rain, ice, snow, uneven ground, etc. We practice the way we do for a reason (per the video), to prepare for the worst case senario. Our academies are designed to teach us in "safe" environments with a lot of stressors, where constant repetition is the norm, however elementary the exercise may seem.
The end result is when things go south in a real world setting, with fire blowing out windows and people screaming for rescues . . . we can throw our ladders and do our job as if it were second nature! So in conclusion, I would say to the critics, before you judge what you see . . . know what it means to step into our boots . . . honor, teamwork, dedication, commitment, service and self-sacrifice!

Louise Joubert brother sorry to disagree with you but this type of training is crap furthermore a 24' painter's ladder can fully support two ppl of 200lbs easily. 40' ca. Hold 2 230lbs fat painters. How do i Know? That's exactly how we use them day by day. But i appreciate the lesson in weight difference.

    • @jeremiahking7113
      @jeremiahking7113 7 років тому +2

Fuyu neko Yes, this training is basic, but your criticism that it is bullshit comes from lack of understanding. These certified fire instructors are required to provide this basic training this way because these are students that are being certified as firefighters. They have to be trained per NFPA standards and they have to pass a test executed by separate designated state proctors according to those NFPA standards which outlines these step by step procedures. This is a college based class that is designed to cover the fundamentals of firefighting. It is typically a 10 credit hour class that requires 16 hours per week for a full semester to pass the college test requirements and then the aformentioned state test requirements. Ground ladders is covered as one chapter of this class. Once the student is certified by the state as a firefighter they are then eligible to test for fire departments (many FD's also require the candidate to have the EMT cert and a basic hazardous materials certification as well to be eligible.) These hiring tests typically include a written test, physical test, and multiple interview processes. Once the candidate passes this testing process they are put on a list in order according to their results. If they are offered a job at fire department they then have to go through an academy that is multiple weeks long (typically from 4 - 16 weeks.) Advanced techniques for all aspects of the job are taught at the fire academy. Once the firefighter completes the academy they are assigned to a fire house/apparatus and they are placed on probation for a year. During this probationary year they have to prove competencies in every facet of the job. That said, I appreciate that you seem to know the ins and outs of the painting profession, and I would never criticize how you do it or why because it would be ignorant as I would have no idea what I was talking about.

@@Rusonekox9 I haven't seen a ladder for sale near me that had more than 320 pound total weight support, personally. I've shopped around a lot. Most seem to support 200-225 pounds total. Some support 250. And occassionally 300-320. I went to several hardware stores... they had nothing above 250 pound support. I use a 40 foot ladder to work on my home now and then. It's heavy as hell. Oddly only supports 225 I believe or 220. And since I am 210lbs I really notice it bow a lot with me and some paint. Most ladders I've seen aren't very high on the weight support scale also, that are being used by professionals. Maybe you got yours at a high price specially ordered. But I can't find any locally that good.

The instructor missed one important detail, I am a house painter and I can add it up. First of all, before raising a ladder like he showed, you must check if the surface is leveled where both legs stand, if not leveled the ladder will tip to either left or right. I am 55 and I still able to lift a 40 foot ladder from the ground by myself. When working on the back yard the ground is not always evened.

okay first of all great video, second these ladders are made heavier than standard ladders for rough use,in training it is a lot of repetition to do our jobs safely so the firefighters go home the same as the arrive along with possible victim safety in accordance with OSHA guidelines, after some practice all these steps turn into one step with all the others done subconsciously . if you still have questions i am sure your local fire dept will assist you with any ladder training you would like.

This is simply preparing the cadets to take the state fire test. I would consider this ladders 101 and not necessarily the best practical application for a real fire ground. As with all things on the job there is always something new to learn and try. Grab your gear and get out and practice.

When a firefighter begins to climb most people start footing the ladder like this so nobody is in his/her way. once the climbing firefighter is past the footer, he will switch around to the other side.

I have to tell you, I have been around ladders my whole life and one of the worst things you can do is lift a ladder on your own! That is a rookie mistake in my opinion. I always try and get a spotter when I able. When I can't, I consider options. And believe me, there are options. You may want to be more open minded before slamming this guys good efforts. Just saying.

All these comments😂😂 fire fighters train how to throw ladders PROPERLY. Most people use unsafe lifting and carrying techniques. This is to teach people how not to hurt themselves or better yet someone they are rescuing. Another reason is because there are policies that OSHA has mandated. There are procedures to things. And they are being laid to do their job, so hell yeah they better do a good job setting up a ladder. AGAIN ALL THIS IS TO CREATE SAFE HABITS SO NO ONE GETS HURT. There's a safe way and am unsafe way. That why they get paid the big bucks LOL plus this is an academy class they are learning basics lmfao

Thank you for showing us this video, first of all if you say that need more than one person to raise a ladder why did you titled your video as "SINGLE MAN LADDER RAISE"
Second: One man raised the ladder and all others just watched.
Third: when you use two persons to raise a ladder one person foot the ladder while the second raises.
Forth: it does not matter whether one person raise the ladder or two, my point is the surface where both legs stands must be leveled. I just added a secure advice.
