I actually rented a Porsche 911 from Hertz recently, and the back seats proved super useful. I had a massive suitcase and was worried about it fitting in the car. It didn't fit in the front trunk, but I was able to move both front seats forward, and toss it in the 911's otherwise useless rear seats. Fit perfectly, and I was able to move the front seats all the way back and forget it was there. And then I was able to keep my backpack or any other ancillary items in the front trunk. I now get why they're included, they do add practicality, even if they're not usable for people.
Of course these are usable for some "people". "Smaller people", like children for example... Maybe you know "children"? I also just can't understand, why there's so much doubt and silly sarcasm about these seats. The Porsche 911 has always been the most usable daily driver sports car because of its back seats, which aren't just for kids, but for a lot of luggage too. Which makes this car super useful. Just try this with a "true two-seater" mid-engined sports car... Good luck!
Of course part of the equation is how tall are the front seat occupants. I am 5' 6" and have had passengers under 5' 4" in the back for short trips to dinner etc.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, can anyone tell me how an unresponsive touchscreen is better than a simple button, to lower the top, especially since the touchscreen requires you to take your eyes off the road?
This is such a low volume car. Mercedes will sell MAYBE 3,000 a year in the USA. It's easier to put a digital button on the screen than to design a whole button and a center console to accommodate the button.
@@martinsvensson6884 The current SL hasn't really been redesigned since 2013. It's a different landscape now. When that car was in development, the SL was selling about 12-15,000 units per year, and warranted more R&D. I think with this one, they wanted to keep the name alive, so they utilized the AMG GT platform, made it a little bigger and more comfortable, and called it a day.
It’s a bit stupid but if you think about it, you look at the screen for 2 seconds (not counting going to that particular menu, true) to hit the gigantic slider and then hold your finger there. You don’t need to look at the screen to hold your finger against it. Not to mention you aren’t going fast for roof operations anyways. You should be doing this at a stop.

Dont compare a company that makes one flagship car every 10years, consists of 500 or less models and will rarely be driven to this. Mercedes don't care what their cars will look like in 10years because their cars aren't meant to be timeless but the most advanced of current day.
@@jordanmiller4648 I disagree; the SL line gets a new gen model every 10-12 years (and sometimes a facelift in between). This is why every new SL has to remain relevant for many years to come. Also, all SL generations eventually become timeless classics.
@@zix_zix_zix in case of the SL model, "eventually" is a really long time, and really depends on succeeding models, R129 was already a classic 15 years ago, while R230 that succeeded it, is still at least 7 years away from being a classic. They took a step back on this one and decided to just put a soft top on it rather than spending time and money on a hard top version when nobody buy it anyways.

MB could have done sooo much more with this car....its nice but the new SL should be a lot more aggressive and sleeker.....for the price of this car u should get a lot more of a modern design....IMO
We have decided to make this car a soft top to save weight…adds awd, rws, more vents in seats, massaging seats, larger touch screen, knobs buttons and paddles to the steering wheel.. ermagerd that car has to have 1000 actuators in it. With all those modes and settings why can’t tech be just more intuitive? Like 3 driving modes (eco, normal, rental, jk aggressive) suspension 3 modes ( cushy, normal, hang on) my old Cadillac STS had none of that but it was still nice to drive the speed at which you used the throttle determines eco ,normal, or sport, and the suspension was decent, a little harsh over low speed tar cracks like most cars I have driven. It cornered decent enough to make a passenger want to grab the Oh Sh*t handle if you wanted. Oh, the screen on that one tiled too circa 2008. Not a race car but all around good especially compared to most SUVs on an off ramp. This car looks like it’s chocked full of goodie’s but are they all really needed? I think I would keep the extra seat heat vent at the neck, ditch massage and the RWS. Half of the buttons and knobs on the steering wheel, keep the AWD, and de gimmick it a bit it’s like a rolling fidget toy or something.
Looks great but ah man the soft top ruins it. The charm of the SL was that it looked like a sexy coupe with the top up & couldn’t tell it it was a convertible. Glad they didn’t kill it tho like it was rumored a few years ago
Love the exterior of the SL55 but not the SL63 and yet not so fond of the interior of either model. The steering wheel with the buttons and the center console with that ugly tablet are so out of place for an Sl and even more for a 2+2 grand tourer. It kind of looks like an intimidating yet sexy, flight simulator with a beautifully leather interior otherwise(SL55), on gorgeous wheels(SL55). The illusion of this fusion between an AMG GT and a Porsche 911 is mesmerizing, not what you would ever expect to see in the rebirth of a legend like the SL. It does definitely grow on you but some homage should of been paid to the heritage of the SL of yesteryears though, starting with no tablets in the center console please! Just offer it then as a no-cost "tech package" option or on the future EV model, so to cater to all driver types today. AMG should consider the addition of a gull-wing or Targa inspired , re-imagined edition of the new SL to compensate for the loss of the legendary Mercedes hardtop convertible roof.
Oh less tablets coming just instead you will get entire dash that is a tablet. Why does it all have to be done to excess? How about some rational design?
So gone are the soft close doors, push button automatic wind deflector, physical roof switches, and yet it is still named SL. Cost saving way to go Daimler, way to go
A UA-camr had a brand new C63 twin turbo AMG that aspirated water going down the road in heavy rain. This bent some connecting rods and other damage.....Cost to replace engine....$76k...Be advised...
I definitely love the new design for the SL, but the MBUX integration of the retractable roof switch will be a big problem if start raining and the screen get wet.

This looks pretty damn good. Nothing will beat the early 2000s SL but this is a nice change from the past 10 years of SL boringness
But the top is red tho and the rims are so bad.

What a gorgeous car, Mercedes are killing it 🔥
very nice but I'll wait for the next gen AMG GT COUPE
Also might be the last SL we're gonna see with a V8.
Glad MB decided to continue the SL. I'd get one just for the AWD. Although, I'd get the Lexus LC500 convertible just for the non turbo V8.
Somebody had an lc smashing thru downtown Baltimore on a late night omg nothing on the streets sound like it….
Iconic, the best reinvention of the SL 63, I want one of these ✔✔

Stunning.. such a timeless side profile.
This is probably the most beautiful convertible in the world now Mercedes are massively on top of their game
This is a really nice car, but that center screen looks like an afterthought.
Little known party trick on MB convertibles, if you hold the unlock button the top goes down. Also goes up if you hold the lock button.

Roman’s heavy breathing is troubling, I think he should consult a physician.
him: "the fastest sl"
V12 SL's: this guy kidding right
He meant the quickest, some of us get acceleration and top speed mixed up.
Fastest SL was the SL65 Black Series from 2009. Had Mercedes most powerful engine. 670hp. 761 lbs/ft of torque.

@@donwarner6925 SL65 black series top speed was 199 mph. No SL has been faster including this new heavier hot mess.

0-60 in 8.2 sec if TFL does the launch.
