- If you live in a pretty large European city, it's very likely that you've seen a fast grocery delivery company like Getir, Gorillas or Flink. What may stand out is their presence everywhere, be it through their riders or their advertising that you may have even seen before watching this video.
We try to unpack what these companies are, the value proposition they offer, why you see them everywhere, and why they have grown so fast in Europe.

About us:
The videos are made by one person, but we have a website where there's a lot of other content that is produced with a team:
We are a team of Europeans trying to create European media platform. We publish a lot of other European related content created by Europeans on our website (www.romuluseurope.eu).
There's a couple of core principles that we try and follow with all our content. It's important to note that these are of course slightly different depending on the medium (article or video):
1. No pretentious (attempting to impress) writing. We write how we speak.
2. No wasting your time. We focus on clarity, always.
3. No hidden bias. Everyone is biased, but not everyone is open about it. We will always be clear about our hidden motivations.
4. Our articles must be between 800 and 1,200 words.
5. Our ideas must be clearly extractable, and outlined writing is encouraged not avoided.*

cool video
0:09 when highlighting gorilas you could have used some sort of mild grey, the black is irrecognizable. Great vid btw.
They're already closing down shops and reducing their presence, at least in city centers. Update video?
Aww man I can't see the sources
Great video! Very refreshing to see such essays on UA-cam from a European perspective. Also these graphics are fantastic!
Really (with the least amount of unnecessary dramatization as possible) honored to hear that from you
Hey neo, just wanted to say that I absolutely adore your intros (and topics in general).. keep it up !!
A video explaining the European disunified consumer base would be awsome. I heard the argument that EU has "regulated itself to death" and felt it was bad but didn't know why.
Noted, I'll put it in the pipeline for later. Thanks for the suggestion
The regulations benefit western European nations at the detriment to Southern European nations.
One could argue that the regulations (especially product standards) make the market more uniform, therefore allowing for companies to expand across borders faster
@@dexulescu US too see his center empty , with all the population moving to the coasts , I would say the opposite, by the fact Eu is not so united we dont see epicentric like silicon valley, and services an exposure to all the Eu population
@@---Snaporaz--- It's a big country so it depends. But so many people on the west coast are moving to inland western states.
The production value here is amazing, -much luck to your channel!
Thanks Aida :)
Well made content.
I'm a South African and it is very much the case that most content is American. Very refreshing to see euro content.
As for this video, it does strike me as odd that logistics (e-commerce, food delivery, scooter/car /bike share) startups are valued so highly
it;s always weird to me as an American to see that a lot of content offered for other english speaking viewers is American content. i get it because youtube is an American company and America is promoted but imagining it is weird. like if all my content was from the UK.
Really, really, really refreshing to finally find EU focused content on economy, startups etc. Production value is insane and I imagine cost you a lot of time. Just wondering if you are natively Dutch or not, since I do not hear a trace of a typical Dunglish accent. Greetings from a fellow Dutchie.
Born in the Netherlands and live there now, but I’ve also spent a decent bit of time in the US, which explains the lack of accent
I only determined he had to be Dutch when he mentioned Flink the second time around, the pronunciation of which sounded Dutch. Until then I thought he'd probably be a international living in Amsterdam XD
this is not a video ….this is a documentary …very informative with a good production quality …I loved it …and you sir got a new subscriber. ..keep it this way.
Really glad you enjoyed it. Thanks Younes
I'm from Turkey and I had no idea Getir was so big lol
Criminally under rated channel. You deserve more than 4k subs.
Were they with 4k just 6 days ago? This means they more than doubled in a week.
@@KiraWrath holy crap you're right, his channels growing fast
100x the subs now
These services grew over tenfold during corona in Sweden. They were somewhat niche before, and food deliveries werent a big thing unlike now
Here in the UK, before corona, McDonalds shut down anyone trying to deliver their food hard, now you can't move for delivery drivers picking up orders from them.
I never thought I would ever touch a delivery app, but as soon as quarantine started, I've been ordering food about once or twice a week
@@goat9295 would you go back not touching the delivery app or maybe not ordering not as frequent as now
me, in lisbon... only seeing some uber eats (buying online is not widepread yet) and grocery stores and bakeries are everywhere (there is one street I pass that has 7 groceries stores, 2 bakeries, 3 bars and one hair salon, OK, most of those groceries stores are facade business for human and durg traffic, but god, their oranges are fantastic)
You got Glovo as well, that's the Spanish Getir and they operate widely in Portugal as well and from what i heard Portugal is a big market for such companies as the restaurant industry is huge in Portugal
I hope you guys keep it that way. As the video mentions; the companies make use of existing infrastructure. Cities like amsterdam are therefore getting more and more crowded by delivery bikers clogging up the streets. This is not a good development in my eyes. Besides that, it’s not like dutch students are driving these bikes. Most times it’s exchange students that are much more vulnerable to the gig job market.
Getir is the most valuable company in Turkey, just in 2 or 3 years. It's wild!
It's not even in top 15. Most valuable Turkish company is Sasa Polyester.
I have a Gorillas Station nearby. The employees are stressed, overworked, and a danger to themselves and others because the time pressure makes them bike recklessly. A friend of mine broke her pelvis in collission with a Cargo biker. I'd feel unethical ordering from them just for the danger they create.
At least they aren't like a doordash driver, behind the wheel of a car while using their phones while also being uninsured (clauses in insurance contracts exclude these kinds of things).
Buy your own things
Self-professed hardcore Introvert that I am, I look forward to going out and getting my own takeout, my own groceries, making (painful?) eye contact/chitchat with strangers, and being out in the world. I rarely use delivery services except on either on days with miserable weather or I'm truly bloody exhausted, and even then I feel guilty, I feel like its a waste.
I find this somewhat interesting because of the fact that in Croatia I haven't seen a single one of the mentioned companies, I didn't even know they existed. Here the market is dominated by Glovo, Wolt and Bolt in that order (perhaps Bolt is bigger than Wolt I'm not sure), but apart from that the other things you mentioned are strikingly the same. There's marketing everywhere for them and you constantly see delivery people on bikes in the city. The only major difference is that from what I know they're mostly used for food delivery (i.e. from restaurants or fast food), I don't think many people use them for grocery delivery.
here in Turkey there's Yemeksepeti, Getir and Zomato
@@k.umquat8604 I live in Turkey too, and I've never heard of Zomato until now
Yup, same. In Romania we have glovo, bolt and tazz
@@k.umquat8604 Getir is now in New York City. I was shocked, because I only discovered them when I lived in Istanbul. But back in 2006, when there was really ZERO delivery service in NYC, Cairo, Egypt (where i stayed for 2 months) had delivery scooters and companies everywhere. At that time, I though.."damn, are middle class Egyptians that lazy that they need to have groceries delivered to them?" 10 years later, the whole world is lazy.
Amazing UA-cam channel!! It’s hard to find such quality content specifically on Europe, thank you!!
Well, I've been binging your channel for the better part of a day now, and I've finally watched all videos that you have out so far. I have to say, I really like what I'm seeing. A channel by a European that focuses on European issues. As an American, it is really refreshing to finally get a good look at what things are like over there. From what I've experienced through all my time on the internet, the story seems to have been unchanging: you all know plenty of what goes on over here due to our media blasting our happenings all over the globe to absolutely everyone, but you all are rather quiet and don't really share much of what goes on there. The videos are really succinct and pleasant to watch too, which is always cool to see. I look forward to seeing more of you in the future, and I'm gladly subscribed now.
You probably won't see this, much less read it, but I wish you all the best. 100k subs, here we go!
Thanks dandarr :) let me know what you think about the next video, should be up this weekend
It's not that EU is not sharing, it's just the US is so loud they drown out the entire world completely.
@@hoogyoutube
I've just found your channel, and am pleasantly surprised and pleased to have done so.
I particularly like your seemingly honest and practical stance in narrating your topics.
I wish you well for the future, from an Irishwoman currently living in the UK.
_PS - It's also very refreshing to find anything that doesn't include the US._
I’ve downloaded all the quick grocery delivery apps because they all offer ongoing discount codes which can only be explained by huge influxes of VC. This is very similar situation to when ride sharing apps were all competing heavily and offering free rides. Now half of those companies are defunct. It’s sort of the magic time for the consumer before consolidation rises prices again. Now Uber in London often costs more than the Black Cabs they set out to disrupt.
exactly, reminded me so much of ride sharing especially the bikes. Not so nice to know that huge amounts of money will 100% be burnt on soon to be defunct companies.
I have never ordered nor ever will any food by delivery, including any ride sharing. First I don't trust it, second I enjoy going and getting it myself while saving money. But hey, to each their own.
had no idea getir even was a thing in other european countries always thought it was a turkish thing.
Getir has become monopoly and grew so fast in almost entire Europe. It was just a humble turkey-based startup before pandemic but now it is one of the greatest pioneers in this sector.
@@paix4966 good to hear
Wow, that's heaps more promotion Getir apparently does overseas than they do domestically in Turkey. I had no idea they were an international player.
must say, watched a couple of your videos and they are so good. keep going guys your the best we need more of you!
Once again an amazing video, keep up the good work ;)
Thanks :)

I think I just fell in love with your channel, awesome content! Bedankt voor de hoge inhoudelijke kwaliteit en zieke visuals :)
Didn't knew getir was popular in Western Europe too and was a unicorn. Great vid.
Thanks for sharing such wonderful content with your audience. It is very interesting stuff. I appreciate all the work put into it. Sincere thanks!
I appreciate the hard work and dedication
Thanks Roshan :)
Ordered from Flink two times when in sself isolation and absolutely hated it. Overpriced, poor user interface, lack of options, delivery severely delayed, some groceries not even delivered, without notice before the delivery... not even to mention the detrimental impact those companies have on the city. Never ordering from any of those companies ever again (unless forced to by isolation again).
A video idea 💡: Why dont u make a video about europes booming shared car, scooters and moped business. And the investments of cities into these apps. When i was in NL there was only felyx but in Istnabul there are lots of apps with different varieties of transportation (marti, binbin tiktakkirala)
yo... your channel is seriously underated!
Thanks Inno :)
I live in Pakistan so we are a few years behind the curve on certain things but my god, the new services like Uber, Careem, Foodpanda, Indriver, several grocery delivery services have made life so much easier. Its great.
İ remember getir being some random delivery company in Turkey and I was so surprised to see ads of it in USA and EU.
Just found your channel. Your graphics are simplisitic, yet awesome! Good job, visually supporting your script
There's an increasing trend of companies operating at a loss and still raking in mad cash due to investment. I dunnae how feasible that is in the long term.
Such high production value wow nice job i subbed
your content has such a good quality
Not me having a flink advertisement before this video was playing 😂
loving how you make shorter videos instead of adding unimportant stuff to reach the 10 minutes mark like other channels do
Hahaha I appreciate that. Just a warning though that my next video is on Belgium, which may be a bit longer than usual, but I can assure you it’s not to just reach the 10 minute mark and genuinely because I don’t know how to simplify that topic :)
@@hoogyoutube seeing the last videos i’m confident you’ll be able to keep it interesting :)

Good information
Your channel will blow up if you keep up with this quality of videos
Thanks Colinobi, glad you found it informative. Definitely more videos to come
Great video. There is sooo much potential here. I hope you will be able to get to a point where this channel will take off!
PS: You are definitely Dutch, right?

Heel verfrissend om een Amsterdammer video's te zien maken over de Europese markt! Ga zo door :)
Great video, thank you very much! :D
Btw Getir got in to the US market as well, they now serve in cities like New York, Chicago and Boston with their authentic scooters 🛵😄
Fişek gibisin abim
Great content, please keep it up!!
It's nice to see these delivery services are rapidly growing across the world, and it's some different startup companies trying to capitalize on this rather than the tech giants trying to monopolize it.
Here in Indonesia, fast grocery delivery already become the norm for years (and in some metro areas actually becomes the need for people). It helps the economy so much and benefits a lot of small businesses.
We have some big players here that are competing, such as Gojek, Grab, Shopee, and some other startups. And yeah, the competition here is very tough.
I knew it, a Dutch brother makes this amazing content.
Until now i didn't hear of any of those companies. In Romania the most popular food delivery servce is Glovo. They even purchesed and starting to integrate the branch that FoodPanda had here in romania. So the food delivery companies left are Glovo, Uber, Takeaway, Bolt and a few others.
Glovo is dominant in the Balkans.
@@cakeisyummy5755 Glovo is Spanish
These videos are so good
Your content is amazing, I cannot believe you have only 790 subscribers. This channel is going to blow up, keep up the great work.
we also have soo many of these companies in india. all promising delivery in under 10 minutes. personally i dont see any demand for such services. hence they have to artificially create a demand and then supply. that is why they do their marketing so aggressively
Looking in the coments, someone wrote a week ago, that he is a thousandth sub. Now the romulus team got 6k subs. :D This will grow big, I have just found the channel, watch a 4 video in a row and had already subscribed. Some people here said, these guys are underrated, but they are doing hella good for a month working channel without YT god's love.
Damn nice quality video :D
growth is so fast. Solid!
This is the second video I've watched since finding this channel today. Very good, and I might end up subscribing sooner that I thought I would.
One disagreement, though.....There's nothing "painful" about making eye contact and/or having a little chat with a stranger! Being sociable is a vital part of being a healthy and helpful human being which, sadly, now seems to be on the decline. _No man is an island._
Subbed instantaniously
cool video! ❤ from Amsterdam

Getir's valuation in 2023-07 was reported to have decreased by 50%, Flink's by 66% (data Techcrunch). Maybe a follow-up on this is warranted, considering you've made two videos favourable of VC-backed economic development. This hasn't aged that well.
When i lived in Italy, there was Glovo but i never used it much because the grocery store was close. And there was still a convenience store nearby after hours. I understand the appeal of them, just never personally used them myself outside of takeaway.
Je maakt top video's
So this is very similar to all the ride sharing companies that seemingly make no money ....they're just in a race with each other to see who will be the last one left, and then they can raise prices drastically, with nobody left to compete.
I've already seen so many ads from Gorillas, and watching this video probably wasn't helping me to get rid of them, lol.
Regardless, I am digging your style and voice! I can tell this channel will become very successful in the near future!

I'm from Spain and never heard of any of these. Interesting video nonetheless
Fast Grocery Delivery has been a trend in China and South East Asian countries long before the pandemic began (as early as 2015). Like many technological innovations in the recent years Europe is actually lagging behind, and technology executives, startup founders, and investors travel to China and SEA to get some ideas. Some of the innovations that launched in the east long before Europe has adopted them are fully-mobile banks, cross-platform payments app and fast grocery delivery.
I agree! Why?! I will never order from any of these, Flink’s ads on youtube are really bad and I heavily dislike them. I’m fine with ordering all of my groceries every week and have them delivered on Friday by Albert Heijn.
Love the informations you dug out. I personally don’t like them. I dislike that we pay so much for delivery services. It’s not true that we save time. We just waste it somewhere. Mostly on the phone. we are getting closer and closer to a utopia. All hail the shiny rectangle
Your channel really reminds me of a german UA-cam channel named Simplicissimus, or their english channel Reasy. Just that your channel is more focused on politics than companys.
Some editing issues here and there, but overall very good video
its similiar to how people stopped going to malls to buy things and rather just buy it online. the next logical step is to have food delivered right to your door instead of going to grocery store yourself.
I like going to the store, I just slap my air pods in and tune the world out. Self checkout is a must tho.
Ik zie de Gorilla's letterlijk overal XD
Hi. Does your team write all of your articles or are most of your articles submitted by viewers through your website?
Half half I think. But we’ll be adding icons to the ones written by the team, so it’s easy to distinguish
@@hoogyoutube Yeah this would be a nice addition. Really enjoying the content though, keep it up 👍🏼
I think the main reason for the growth in this industry has to be the Covid 19 pandemic. When people were being discouraged from leaving their own homes unless strictly necessary, many of them ordered take out and grocery deliveries as it was the safer option. They noticed how convenient it was and ended up sticking with the practice once their lives opened up again.
Spot on, Jemini, and this is only the start of massive changes which will be taking place over the next few years. Thousands of shops and businesses have been permanently shut down, and AI/AGI will be replacing many of our jobs as well. The future does not look good. Stay well.
Crazy because as an American I’ve never heard of any of these brands.
How does this channel have so little subscribers
I still don't understand how those companies work.
I work at Flink and I have calculated that even if they just wanted to pay me my salary, they would have to have 3-4 € of profit on every single order, which is definitely not the case. To keep the whole system running and to pay all other employees, they would most likely make a profit of ~6€ per order.
So how exactly do they make money? I still fail to realize that
nice
thanks feetus
Nice, I was looking for a side hussle. Subsidized markets. It's free real estate.
Lieferando is what basically everyone in Germany that I know uses. They also operate in neighboring countries but as far as I know their market is primarly german speaking.
