How To Prep & Paint A Motorcycle Engine EP06 | Ducati Hypermotard Restoration

  • Now that the Hypermotard engine is removed I can finally start with the preparation and painting. I've followed a similar process with the Fireblade rebuild I did a few years ago but this engine proved rather more troublesome because of the complex shape.

All the cleaners from degreaser to acetone. Now good tape an obv a good paint and primer along with your time that adds up . then think why didnt i just send it out?
Because sending it out wont callis your hands ladies . That's why lol.

Just seen this, currently doing a similar project with an oddly shaped xr650 engine too
I can see you filmed this a while back but just in case it's of any help on future projects, the scotchbrite bits on the dremel are pretty cheap and super effective
Run them at higher speeds, aggressive enough to get old paint and oxidisation off, but won't chew into the cases and don't need any hand finishing either
    Awesome video 😎

A nice trick to clean up aluminum parts is to use a soda blaster. Easy to make or use a small sand blaster. Load it with baking soda and go at it. No worries about getting grit in your engine. You can also do this with the engine installed with no worries since the baking soda will not harm anything. Its kinda messy, so do it outside. Just rinse with water to clean it up.
This provides a nice satin finish, no worries about getting to aggressive with the blasting, it will not remove extra material. You can leave the finish as is, polish it, or paint it.

Scotch bright pads are better than those sanding foam pads, available in many grades and is what body shops use.
I think you will end up disappointed, the paint will fail quite quickly. Guess next time you might have the confidence to strip the engine fully especially as you won’t need to do all the other work on the chassis and running gear etc. 👍

When you saw the areas primed but still not happy, you should have taken another day and refined them, you could have knocked the top off the spark plug to get access and sanded down all the areas where the old paint shows and rough surface could be easily addressed.
My OCD would not cope with this finish and all the painted bolts and nuts.
Pity, I was hoping for a more finished product 😢

Wrestled with the same problem on my custom r80 build. 30 year old engines are hard to get clean without blasting. I've disassembled heads etc to get vapour blasted to take the crank out and everything else needs a lot of specialist tools so I'll just have to make do. What I have found that works well is alubright from raceglaze off eBay for removing corrosion in hard to reach places. Knowing it's not perfect is eating away at me though 😭
