    Out of all my planes this is the only one that still gives me a bit of anxiety when I fly it. It is a fun anxiety and happy to see I am not the only one having fun with this plane.

    You seemed to have a lot more fun with the XK- X450. The Mini Convergence appears to be a bit of a handful. Kudos to the camera crew, you're lucky to have such a good one.

      JJRC MO2 is my favorite. This is cool too, but it's not often that HH gets beat out by the Chinese.

    Love my V22 Osprey, and i have the larger Convergence with FPV. The V22 is just really cool, challenging in a fun way. The large Convergence is a head turner at the field, and enjoy flying it in all modes.

      I want to get the V22 Osprey, but don't know if it will be around much longer. Seems they get mixed reviews, as they aren't the easiest planes to fly, but everyone thinks they'll be just like a quad...

    Hello Brian and Mrs Megan aka camera crew. As always well done. Cool vtol looked at that plane thought it would be a good plane but haven't gotten it yet. Back to the a10 if i didn't have some altitude when i got to slow it would have been bad. But learned to keep the power on. My first edf was a turbo jet because i watched your videos and just had to have it. I have it still but with stronger edfs bigger esc's still flys very well. Thank you for your video keep flying you guys. Just having fun RC'n with friends and family members. Again as always well done.

    Realflight 9 has the mini convergence, and it helps with the learning curve

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 роки тому +2

      I think Real Flight 9 does a great job of simulation, but I've learned that Simulation doesn't account for weird, unexpected things well, like bugs landing on your shoulder while landing, or gusty wind, or failures, BUT it's a cheaper way to crash ;)

    You are right about the Experience level to fly it. I have been in the hobby for around 6 Years and trying to flight this on a 10 mph wind it’s not easiest thing to do. The tri mode it’s very bad responding on flighting backwards to bring it back to you. And you will need a big place to fly this, it’s definitely not for an small place to fly as plane, as tricopter it’s not bad on an inclosed area.

    Thanks Brian, your video was very helpful in me setting up the Mini Convergence I was given. The step by step transmitter set up was especially useful. You gave me the confidence to twice transition, albeit briefly, to aircraft mode on the first battery. I will have lots of fun with this. Again thanks and regards from Switzerland.

    This reminds me of my Eflite V-22 Osprey. These types of aircraft are very tricky to fly. There’s probably a reason both of them were on clearance, although good first attempts VTOLs.

    Nice thorough and balanced review, Brian. Thanks for sharing. I just ordered one of these. Still looking for a video that really shows how it flies in agility/acro + multirotor mode, and what's possible with transition in either direction when staying in acro mode with flight mode and stability on separate switches. Most videos seem to be with the 3-position switch setup that automatically goes into stability when not airplane mode. I fly roughly equal amounts fixed wing, quads and CP helis, and never fly rotors in stability mode. In addition to greatly increased speed and maneuverability, the advantage of agility/acro mode is that you don't have to worry about drifting due to trim or wind. Once you have it in a stationary hover, it will pretty much hold that position. It might not be 100% hand-off stable, but you'll never have a continuous drift in one direction that you have to counter with constant stick input. Related to this, I'd be interested to see how transition back to multirotor mode works if you put it in a steep climb first so you don't need 200-feet of lateral space to transition. Or is it not recommended to transition from non-level flight?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 роки тому

      I don't know if you can switch them without switching both simultaneously. If you can, I'm not aware of it. Keep in mind, the Rx does all the mixing and flight controls, we're only calling out the controls to direct modes. I'm concerned about killing the motor mounts, but I suppose there's more than likely a way to split them off, fairly easily.
      When you get it, you'll understand, but this VTOL never really flies hands off...it's always wanting to drift here or there, but it does fly okay when you tell it what to do, but loitering is definitely not one of it's strong suits.

    • @1BrundleFly1
      @1BrundleFly1 4 роки тому +1

      @@BrianPhillipsRC Appreciate the reply, Brian. I've enjoyed a bunch of your videos over the last year, and learned some things. Everything I've read suggests that the quick start guide has you program three modes on one switch, leaving out multirotor + acro, while the manual offers an alternate setup to separate flight and stability modes, giving you all four combos. I've been playing with the Realflight model, which does that. Some interesting stuff is possible in virtual reality. I found some behaviors that I'm pretty sure are a significant departure from reality, but it's been good for learning what *not* to do. ;^) Looking forward to checking out the real thing soon. Keep up the good work!

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 роки тому

      For sure! Seems that some of these flight controller based settings are quite picky within the Horizon Hobby lineup, so just err on the side of caution...maybe you could pull props and try it sitting on ta small box, or something like that (so the motor mounts wont hit)?

    Should I buy a used one at the LHS for $160 ? .... I guess it must be the bigger one at that price. The HH video made it look cool and easy. If Brian (lands big/fast jets on his curvy/narrow drive way) Phillips says its hard to fly - and commenters talk a lot about broken parts then I am guessing I should pass on this on ????

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 роки тому +3

      Jack, I share your sentiment, and I was hoping to give a glowing review of how easy it was to fly, and how it could fly in such tight spaces, and how perfect it would be for a beginner, but then when I took off in the kitchen, I was like...um, nope - too bad, but still a fun plane.
      I'll review other VTOL's and see if there's a better "beginner" choice. I have reviewed the XK450 with better success in the "beginner" category, but I really wanted one that I could fly on DSMX.

      yeah. I'm glad you could see that. I don't mean to bash Horizon Hobby at all...they're a great company, and they make some of the best stuff, but this was just more or less a "miss" if you get right down too it. More expensive AND inferior to the JJRC MO2 or XK 450 in almost every measurable factor, EXCEPT 1) DSMX compatible out of box 2) This one flies like a plane slightly better. That being said, I'd rather not dwell on this item, as "is what it is". It was kinda fun to decorate it with he stickers - LOL!!!

    first video of yours I watched. Bought this for my kid. Setup is a $&@?! Dx6e. Some steps clear as day, others wtf. That’s why I searched out videos on setup. Great overall video, I’ll check out more of your stuff. My issue is that I cannot see the remote screen as you perform setup. You need a corner insert video of just the screen. The DR settings: 70/100. I could not figure out as DR and Expo are 1setting in my controller I couldn’t figure out how to separate. Watching this video seeing you flip switches I was thinking that’d what I missed. So I tried it. Didn’t see any changes flipping my switches trying to set DR. As for the Radio Setup on this pane, it's basically weird...and no other way around it. Horizon Hobby is usually pretty good about explaining weird details, but since this VTOL depends on a flight controller, the controls are not very intuitive. Also, this VTOL is a real challenge to fly. If you don't find success, we have reviewed a few others that might end up in your hangar soon ;)

    Just bought one of these from my local shop. I would have used your link but horizon no longer sells this. I am a truck driver and i am on the road for multiple weeks at a time i was looking for something small to take with that i could fly in many situations i hope this works well for me. So far this is the 3rd craft i have purchased because of your vids. Next is the ultimate 3d. My one question is there a way to trim it mechanically? I noticed it didn't seen stable in hover but other vids i have seen it was stable. Its been a while since this vid came out do you have any updates or new thoughts?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 роки тому

      I think you can make some mechanical trims, but the flight controller will somewhat counteract them.
      If you struggle with this one, here's another one you might consider for future -
      MO2 VTOL amzn.to/2zwNvaV / bit.ly/2TTq4Qn (Better)
      X450 VTOL amzn.to/2GgLtLS / bit.ly/39XCOuj (Very slightly inferior)

      yeah, it does hover and forward flight, but doesn't go straight up like the XK450

    This plane is a money pit !!! Servos break for no reason. Thats why it's on sale, they are getting rid of it. I hear the larger model works well.

      Agreed, It's on clearance for a reason. I just wanted the XK450 with my DX18, and I got an inferior choice. It's fun to fly, but I wouldn't call it a money pit. If you never crash it won't cost anything ;) That being said, I also crashed and broke my XK450 on the maiden flight. I stole parts from another plane, and had it fixed in about an hour...but not everyone has 100 planes lying around in their basement.
