This overview of all the different cartoons made me realise something about how Penguin is often written and thats how the writting for him is sort of stuck in the past. I always like the DCAU first design of the Penguin as he feels like a supervillain and remember I about him having so much untapped potential before about him and Batman being like Eliot Ness and Al Capone from the Untouchables and probably make a leader of the Injustice league. When you get to Clayface remember that there are 2 Clayfaces in the 2004 series first being Ethan Bennet who probably no doubt supposed to be the show’s Harvey Dent and the second being Basil Karlo who is no different from the Caped Crusader version.

For me, every version of the Penguin is good in its own way. The BTAS version was like the Danny Devito version, just more sophisticated. The N.B.A version is honestly the version I like the least. I do like the "shady businessman" role he plays, but I hate the giant design change as he is supposed to be the same character with the BTAS version. The Batman 2004 is the first version of the Penguin I have seen. He looks and acts like the Danny Devito version, which invokes a sense of familiarity, and I do like that they chose to give him different types of birds as henchmen. I don't know how to feel about the Kabuki twins and martial arts motif. The Brave and the Bold version has a sense of Nostalgia. I like that they tried to make him resemble his design and mannerisms from the comics and the 60s show. The Justice League Action version honestly seemed to have some potential. 9:47. I still believe that could be a plot point for a future episode. That Oswalda had a son who was deformed and so she cast him out. And that son might become the next Penguin.
I heard that one of the reasons why Penguin and Harley Quinn were changed so drastically in Caped Crusader was because the characters are being used in other media, particularly The Penguin and Harley Quinn shows.
My favorite version of the character is Definitely the Colin Farrell version from the 2022 film the Batman and the 2004 animated series the Batman. (Fun fact, That show Was one of my first introductions to Batman along with Batman begins back in 2005.) What so cool about the latter version is that he is voice by none other than SpongeBob himself who also did a version of Starscream from Transformers Animated!
I absolutely love The Batman’s Penguin. Ironically, he’s closer to a cartoon DeVito than the BTAS version in many ways. Speaking on the BTAS version, I think it is a real case of missing the forest for the trees with the writers. They felt saddled with a Penguin unworthy of their original vision, but the one time they put in real effort (Birds of a Feather) they wound up making a real contribution to the evolution of the character. Modern Penguin, I think, is defined by a vicious streak that he tries to hide behind a facade of class. He lies to himself about who he is, and whenever he’s confronted with something that breaks his illusion, like mockery, he erupts. Like an actual Penguin, he’s only an animal that happens to look fancy. In this way, Oswalda remains true to the core spirit of the character.
It's like they can't move past that single fact unless the word "multiverse" is somewhere in the script. I didnt hear nearly this many complain about the female doc ock in spiderverse.

The penguin has some really interesting designs over the years and Oswalda just by pure description alone and her episode is dark and yet super interesting but I really wanted to say that the penguin looked like the monopoly man from the 70s show
btas/tnba is my favorite, i would say the arkham version of penguin could be included here since its tech voice over but i get that this is just for animated series
I wonder if this Penguin will run for mayor as it seems to be a rite of passage for Penguin adaptations. Burgess Meredith's Penguin ran for mayor, as did DeVito's Penguin, the DCAU Penguin (in the tie-in comics), Gotham's Penguin and now it's suggested that Colin Farrell's Penguin also has his eyes on it.
Caped crusader is overhated just on episode 9 now and so far its amazing not as good as batman the animated series but the new batman voice actor is good and the other voice actors and actress the weakest episode for me is episode 3 but the others are good but the best are night ride and moving target for me gentlemen ghost is a good villain and the fact they made him hate everything except the rich is just funny to me and his voice actor is amazing and moving target us amazing i loved the twist at the end
Judging by the comments I get, most people seem to dig what Caped Crusader is doing. There's just a very vocal minority of *the usual suspects* that hate it.
@SerumLake caped crusader doesn't deserve the hated its trying something new and I like it so far my three criticisms though is that the 1940s theme is under used the episodes feel a little short and I feel like the main villain of the episode has little screen time and that the batman take down squad was under used but other than that its a good show
@beckywilson1550 I am not a fan and not for the reasons You and Serum Lake believe. Simply put I think the show is lacklustre. Most of the villains are underutilised and forgettable, the character designs are bland, certain characters are kinda unlikeable. The character arc 4 Dent was undeveloped and ended prematurely and Quinn was just boring. Now if you like the show that's fine but personally I just do not see the appeal.
A neat video, I for one love the new Penguin and think its a fascinating new take and design. Still familiar, but just different enough to breathe some new life into old ideas.
For the Batman’s version of the penguin, I like one of those spoiled brats, lost the family fortune, either in his lifetime or the lifetime his parents more likely because of his debut episode we learned that Alfred’s grandpa worked for his family Alfred said that they were the stereotypical cruel to the help rich people, and also said that he heard that the fortune had been squandered and they had to leave England in disgrace Anyway, the penguin is basically someone who won’t move on from their families right history and wants to reclaim it probably does not know how to do it legitimately which let’s face it. There are kids of rich families who don’t know how to actually run their family businesses.
Oswalda meanwhile is honestly an interesting way to bring in an aspect of Penguin many I feel forget; Penguin is usually underestimated. Be it for size, physical deformity or, in this case, gender.
I don't care if they gender swap or race swap a character... as long is said character is well written and fits into the role they play I am happy. It's when said character relies on pandering to a group is when I hate them... and that those who do should learn from the Caped Crusader Penguin.
I think ‘The Batman’ 2004’s characterisation of The Penguin is the best and most underrated version of the character, ironically better than the BTAS version of the character!
Terminal ( Batman Beyond). Earth Mover ( Batman Beyond). The Terrific Trio ( Batman Beyond). The Justice Lords ( Justice League). Dr. Wheeler ( Batman Beyond). Morgan La Fay ( Justice League). Mordred ( Justice League). Amanda Waller ( Justice League Unlimited).
I like 2004's version a lot as a mirror to Bruce, seeing how he views alfred for example. 04 has some depth to it. They do some cool stuff with Clayface and Robin too.
I am a fan of the Batman cartoon and I really do not understand why some people look down on it. Just because it doesn't meet your standards does not make it bad. It was different and that's OK. And just because something is made 4 "kids" does not mean adults can not like it. I like it and I am not ashamed of that fact. Just because something is "darker" does not make it better. But I digress.... The Penguin is the most versatile villain in media. Each version of Oswald is memorable in one way or another
It'll never not be funny to me that the creators of BTAS essentially gave up on the Penguin once they learned they were forced to use the Burton design. Also, confirmed: SL likes his Penguins THICK.
I'm hoping we get an origin story for Oswalda in season 2. Especially after the success of the Penguin show on Max. I also would not mind seeing a team up between her and Catwoman. Selina was a thrill seeker, I wonder how she would react dealing with a wicked cold-hearted gangster like Oswalda
Considering the Penguin is kinda a suck-up to present society at various times it doesn't surprise me the incarnations are different: a man of high society, a supposedly misunderstood grotesque outcast looking to fit in, a bottom-feeder looking to weasel into high society and position into opportunities to takeover, a nightclub face to hide the drugs and weapons underbelly, a remnant of a fallen family trying to claw back up, hoarder of power afraid to lose their power, a self-victimizer oblivious to the pain and suffering dished out, etc
How did Larry and Igner, I mean Aaron and Ronald, make it to adulthood if Oswalda was ready to murder them both without hesitation on a comment from one of her enemies?
I actually like the penguin episode, "the mechanic" it's a bit weak with introducing Batman's mechanic out of nowhere and then never using him again, but it's one of his more menacing appearances and it's notable that he actually kills someone in the show. Which means he might have a higher body count than the joker in the original show as long as the joker toxin victims are considered alive at least. (For the whole dcau though, lex Luthor has them beat in spades, though much more indirectly. )
I think the issue I have with that episode stems from the fact that Akom, a studio that can’t animate vehicles, were given an episode all about cars. I talked to Kevin Altieri about it and he said it was quite challenging to storyboard the episode around AKOM’s abilities.
I just feel a female Penguin feels unneeded. Honestly, Batman has never missed out on great female badguys. Why do we need to change a great male villain? Batman has one of the best rogues galleries, women included. There is nothing femme-penguin can supply that an already made villain can't already provide, like say Lady Shiva.
I'll agree the only thing that penguin being a woman does add is making the whole killing her own child thing seem even more heinous. But aside from that, if nothing would have changed if she was a man instead, does her being a woman even matter? Also femme penguin fills a female gangster leader role that not very many fill as well. lady shiva is a good villain but she goes about things differently.
@claytopolis I respond that why change Penguin's gender period. Here's what I suggest, we use both Penguin and Lady Shiva with Penguin doing her bidding. That way you could be true to both characters and have your girl-boss, which suits Lady Shiva fine. Lady Shiva can also have a moment being annoyed at Penguin's Umbrella cannon and Shiva can still end a kid for that shock value.
In terms of Batman the Cape crusader, I think the show wanted to go in its own direction and try new things. Whether you like them or not is up to you I actually like the Cape crusader. It definitely has that Batman in the animated series feel but it's its own series
I never really understood why the Penguin's near the top of the villain list. I could understand liking the little weirdo with a lot of money, but one of the greats?
I hope Hugo strange is high up on your villains to discuss mostly I can hear you talk about probably the most animated version of the character the Batman, who is on the shortlist of characters that people generally agree on is better than DCAU version
The Penguin from Caped Crusader could of just been MA Parker from Batman 1966. That Character could of fit this role. Owned a boat casino and is a mother who controls crimes. It could have worked. No problem with Female Penguin but Ma Parker would of Been Better.
Personal I liked The Batman (2004) penguin sure he was the generic scheming thief, i was intrigued his skills as a martial artist, but I liked that he's a grimey person like villains tend to be. He's just entertaining although i thought it was weird we hardly know anything about his henchwomen. I know I'm gonna get flag for this but I have a legit criticism regarding the change they made for caped crusader. Especially Bruce timm's reason for the change. I would've fine-ish if they changed the name but the reasoning of changing the gender cause there is a lack of female villains is just false considering Bruce has worked on the show, he could've used a random characters from the comics or simply make a new character like he did before. And even if they aren't famous why should that stop them from pushing these characters and giving them the spotlight She also appeared in 1 episode and other than firing the cannon on the GCPD it doesn't feel there's an impact for future episodes
I hope the joker is nowhere near the top of the list of villains you’re going to do because let’s face it. It’s mostly going to figure out which shows can handle the part of the joker that does crazy schemes and how much he wants to hurt people
You ever think the people who complain about female penguin would be quieter if the word "Multiverse" or "alternate universe" was somewhere in one of those episode scripts? I dont remember nearly this much whining about Olivia Octavious in spiderverse.
I think people that don’t like women or people of colour may have chosen not to watch a film starring an African American Spider-Man, so they may not know about Octavia! I remember Miles Morales getting a lot of hate from that crowd when he first debuted in the comics.
I think the reason I don't like the penguin in Cape crusader as of the excuse that they made to change the penguin into a girl is there is not enough good female villains which I don't agree with and even if they did believe that why not make new villains cos they done it before
I think the main problem of Bruce Timm is that he is not a fan of the Penguin and the Riddler. One is that he looks too goofy for his taste and the other is that he's too complicated to make good stories with clever riddles. Another problem is that they are best known on the Batman TV show with Adam West, which is why he doesn't see any potential in them. Also, I'm not the only one having problems with the newer version of Penguin. As a friend of mine criticized her and the show itself while reinventing the villain: As many of us already know, there is a female rendition of the Penguin in the new Batman cartoon, Batman: Caped Crusader. I'm going to be honest, I really think that it wasn't really the best idea, or at least not well executed. Mainly because just the way it was done was in my opinion, just incredibly lazy, and misguided. If you want to gender swap a character, fine. By all means, do that. But at least do it better than what they did here. For example, when Gotham introduced their own rendition of Firefly, who is a young woman named Bridget Pike, they didn't just gender swap or rename Garfield Lynns. No, they at least took the time to make her unique enough to be her own character. Also, she's become so popular, from what I've gathered, that she has become Garfield's partner in the latest continuity of Batman. But Caped Crusader from what I have seen from the clips and gathered from other people didn't do that. She's literally just Penguin, and nothing more than that! Not even something worth while! Hell, even her Gotham and Telltale counterparts at least did something a bit different in their own ways. Yeah, they were still Penguin at heart, but they had their own defining features that set them apart. Like Telltale Penguin being a friend of Bruce Wayne's childhood friend and sporting a new design not seen by any other incarnation since! On top of that, the one thing that made this Penguin unique, being a mother, wasn't even used as much as it should have been! Spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen it, but it doesn't end well for one of her kids! I mean, why make Penguin into a woman when you barely changed the character at all, and barely utilize the one thing that sets her apart from the other Penguins?! Oh, and Oswalda? Really? You couldn't have done something a little different like Olivia or any other O name? Hell, I would have preferred Olive. But Oswalda?! That's lazy as hell! It reminds me of when I first created Prankmaster back when I was a teenager, and called him Charlie Quinn! Even then, I knew better! But, at least it isn't as stupid as Mrs. Freeze from Suicide Squad. Nothing can be that stupid. They couldn't have just used Killer Frost. or Nora when she went through her Mrs. Freeze faze. Seeing as there are apparently two Floyd Lawton's in that abomination's canon. But I digress, I honestly think that they were just better off just making this character into he own thing, and not be connected to the Penguin. Keep the rivalry with Rupert Thorne, but make her into a completely new character. Again, it's not the concept that I don't like, it's the execution. Now for the next part that grinds my gears. Bruce Timm's reason for the change. "A lack of good villains." That is the stupidest reason I have ever heard! For crying out loud, this was one of the few minds that brought together one of the greatest rogues lineups in DC Comics history! Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Two-Face, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Mad Hatter, Scarecrow, Mr. Freeze, Ventriloquist, Killer Croc, Man-Bat, Ra's al Ghul, Clayface, Hugo Strange, even Firefly in the revamped season! Even if he would have said that there were a lack of female villains, (Which there still are in the comic world. Not as bad as it use to be, but still lacking I find.) that's still no excuse! For crying out loud, Bruce Timm co-created Harley Quinn, Baby Doll, Red Claw, Calendar Girl, Roxy Rocket, and the freaking Phantasm! He even placed Nocturna into the Caped Crusader's villain line up for God sakes! A rogue that was scrapped in TAS! And you're telling me that he couldn't at least come up with new villains for the show and had to resort to swapping?! Sigh. So, basically, this Penguin is my answer to that. It's my way of saying, "Hey Bruce! This is how you do it!" I went with a completely different look for the character, but I think I kept the design close enough for everyone to recognize that this is a version of Penguin. I have to be honest, I'm really starting to worry about Bruce Timm as of late. If the whole Bruce x Barbara didn't make that clear enough.
Yeah I suppose I could’ve mentioned him in the section with The Brave and the Bold. He wasn’t a significant character in that show, but I definitely could’ve shown him. I haven’t neglected to mention that show in next week’s video though 🫡
As pointed by a certain DeviantArt artist the caped crusader penguin really sucked, that was just Oz but as a woman, that's not good gender inversion, Bruce Timm could've invented an original character but no, he gave us this penguin who had nothing new or interesting.
I still don't know how I feel about Oswalda... having her being tall, influent, popular and flirty was a nice touch since most of the villains on this show were direct opposites from their TAS counterpart. The gender change however... not so much
I swear, so much of the online hate for Caped Crusader is clearly from guys who have not watched the show and are just mad about this one character being gender-flipped.

Honestly I feel 2004’s Penguin was the closest Oswald got to be a credible threat to Batman in a fight.
Forgot an animated appearance for the Penguin; Battle of the Super Sons.
This is more covering his appearances in various animated series instead of movies.
My favourite Penguin is the one from the Batman Audio Adventures
How did Larry and Igner, I mean Aaron and Ronald, make it to adulthood if Oswalda was ready to murder them both without hesitation on a comment from one of her enemies?
Thanks for the video.
You’re welcome 🙇♂️
I like the female Penguin more than any of the Penguin's other incarnations. She's ruthless, wicked, and charming of course.
It definitely has that Batman in the animated series feel but it's its own series
wow, had no idea that the Batman AND Spider-Man 60s cartoons were equally bad
maybe do the live action version of the penguin since I am debating which is the best
I never really understood why the Penguin's near the top of the villain list. I could understand liking the little weirdo with a lot of money, but one of the greats?
I’m usually not a fan of gender swaps majority of the time but honestly I lowkey rock with caped crusaders penguin
I liked penguin in batman caped crusader, She was terrifying
I hope Hugo strange is high up on your villains to discuss mostly I can hear you talk about probably the most animated version of the character the Batman, who is on the shortlist of characters that people generally agree on is better than DCAU version
i need to offer a small push back on BTAS Penguin. he was excellently preformed by Paul Williams.
I agree, it’s just a shame that most of his episodes were forgettable at best.
I hated Arkham games.
They made some villains too awful, pathetic and evil; like Penguin and Riddler.
The Penguin from Caped Crusader could of just been MA Parker from Batman 1966. That Character could of fit this role. Owned a boat casino and is a mother who controls crimes. It could have worked. No problem with Female Penguin but Ma Parker would of Been Better.
Wasn't The 2004 The batman's penguin trying to regain his fortune it ran out or something.
And even if they aren't famous why should that stop them from pushing these characters and giving them the spotlight
She also appeared in 1 episode and other than firing the cannon on the GCPD it doesn't feel there's an impact for future episodes
I think Penguin should be a bigger villian than one shot.
Just look at Colin Farrell's Penguin, how much of a character he is!
Or Gotham's Penguin
Was the extended pause at 12:03 a comedic one?
Heck to the yeah ! Yikes 😳😱
I think the reason I don't like the penguin in Cape crusader as of the excuse that they made to change the penguin into a girl is there is not enough good female villains which I don't agree with and even if they did believe that why not make new villains cos they done it before
that woman looks old enough to be the penguins mother
That better be Oswalds sister or something. I shit you not
I think the main problem of Bruce Timm is that he is not a fan of the Penguin and the Riddler.
As a friend of mine criticized her and the show itself while reinventing the villain:
As many of us already know, there is a female rendition of the Penguin in the new Batman cartoon, Batman: Caped Crusader.
This penguin is... gorl?
I like her she's cool
LOL 😂😆and yikes 😳😬as well?? Is this gonna be your longest bleeping 🤬bleeping and bleeding 🩸video ever?!
you missed on the Harley Quinn show it has him there too
Yeah I suppose I could’ve mentioned him in the section with The Brave and the Bold. He wasn’t a significant character in that show, but I definitely could’ve shown him. I haven’t neglected to mention that show in next week’s video though 🫡
Different tv 📺reviews and tv 📺versus 🆚penguin 🐧 🦇Batman characters over the long historys of film 🎥🎥versus 🆚tv 📺versus comics books 📖📖etc!
JESUS EPILEPSY WARNING DUDE SHIT
As pointed by a certain DeviantArt artist the caped crusader penguin really sucked, that was just Oz but as a woman, that's not good gender inversion, Bruce Timm could've invented an original character but no, he gave us this penguin who had nothing new or interesting.
LOL 😂😆
I still don't know how I feel about Oswalda... having her being tall, influent, popular and flirty was a nice touch since most of the villains on this show were direct opposites from their TAS counterpart.
The gender change however... not so much
I swear, so much of the online hate for Caped Crusader is clearly from guys who have not watched the show and are just mad about this one character being gender-flipped.
This Video is so Cash Money Sigma Gyatt
(I am sorry)
i am so old i dont get it
