As a non-pilot, I'm blown away with the plane's capabilities and your skills. I had no idea you were going to roll through those ditches! Amazing. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for the content! There isn't much out there on the Javron Cub. This shows it's every bit of monster that Jay says it is. I've been planning my Javron build for the past couple years - hopefully will start in the next couple years. Thanks again!
Don't know if you intended to, but the narration about the build details, while the camera is panning over those divots, was perfect. We had a sneaking suspicion they were there for a gear test, thanks for not disappointing us!
What a piece of beauty -work of artists….!years of experience in a plane that only blood sweat and tears and dedication!!!And of course Money lol I just can’t get enough of this, I don’t know lifestyle or what you call but it’s like it’s calling me!!! Thx for all the videos Greg!!!
At first I thought someone was trying to wreck your strip. Then I thought the video was to show them that it didn’t work. Nope. Just Greg out testing things again. I used to love going out to the island in my Arctic Tern. It showed me how hard it is to take off on a curved road. Airplanes just want to go straight!
I am sad to hear what happened to Your Maule, i bought one of your video's "water play" maybe 10 years A go ! Was a bible to me lol. I build a streched tri-pacer , been flyin it since 2004, 0-360, 31's . Great flying plane. Stay safe Greg ! Cheers from Canada.
5/28/21. I found the island today! I saw a low flying plane and stopped at the port dock and then went around to down stream side of the steel plant. The bush plane disappeared and must have landed nearby there. Do hope to share some campfire stories someday. Your films are very good, I like the focus and format. I have the 95 Special Effects Kitfox model 4b, only one made.thanks again
Please come to ArkanSTOL next year! Thank you for this content! This is kind of flying was discouraged when I was younger and now there is a Forum for people with simular interests to share their lessons learned with out the STIGMA. Great Work!
Great to see how you test your gear. Love the discussions on safety and risk mitigation when trying out a new sand bar/strip (aerated sand, etc.). Would love to hear some discussions about how you know where you can/can’t land. BLM vs. county or state property, etc.
That can be a sticky subject for us in the lower 48. Alaska is pretty much wide open for off airport but where I live I have been Mirandized for landing on National Forest lands. I showed them the CFR's as they applied and that is pretty much where it ended. The BLM is I believe much more problematic because each area has rules that apply to the specific area and it is pretty hard to find out what is legal from the agency in charge. They are quick to usually say it is not legal...
@@mauleguy Yeah that’s what I thought. Interesting. I hear certain states are more GA/bush flying friendly than others as well. Glad you at least have an open playground right in your backyard...
I couldn't see if you had VG's. If not, are they something you would consider? Nimble bird and you certainly are dialed in to it. Big power and large wings equals drag and more fuel consumption. Great piloting.
Whats extremely interesting about this as well is its a pretty much stock Javron Kit going back with the lycoming 320 and demonstrates amazing STOL capabilities without fowler flaps , without slats ... Just a lightweight super cub with a strong 320 , optimized prop for max takeoff power .... and yet it hauls ... extreme back country capable .... What it does is it tells us we can have killer capable back country machine without blowing the bank ... I wonder if you purposely choose this rout to show us this ...show us how its done
Great build Greg. I have been researching the Javron kits. Carbon Cubish performance in a more classically true to Super Cub plane...for $100,000 or more less than a CC. I like it. I notice the Javron cubs have a gross weight up to 2200...what is your particular gross weight?
I did the 4" wider on the Super Cub before this one. If you are a big guy the 4" is nice or do need to haul a little more gear. I am small at 5'7" and 155 pounds so the stock fuselage is good.
Yes they are Airframes, before the STC was bought by them but same thing. All the blocks that are riveted are anodized so they will not corrode. The strut material is still bare. Not to worried, pretty hard to paint the inside. I guess you could slosh them with primer inside. They are not sealed so they can drain. If you lived in salt air I would paint but otherwise it is just extra weight:))
Other than 10:1 pistons did you do anything else to the engine ( ignition , header exhaust etc ) I have a new Murphy Rebel with a stock 160 HP 320 ..... How much power do you think your 320 has now ?
Did I see in another video that you only spent about 30k? If so that's an incredible accomplishment. Beautiful bird. My brother and I have a similar cub,but it cost a little more!
Nice cub, well I figure with your experience your the person to ask, why did you go with the O-320 and standard wings? Compared to Bushwacker it seems so tame! A O-320 with 10:1 compression makes 160-170 hp? at 2700rpm? Wide deck? And why you choose to go with the squared off Javron wings? AND one last question at least for now, the extended gear, are they one of the options in the Javron kit or did you fabricate them? Thanks ahead of time and for the videos.
Well that is a lot to comment on but I will give it ago. I built a cub before this one that was Lycoming O-360 with 10-1 pistons, 84/43 1p235 propeller. It had a big wing with big double slotted flaps, more angle of incidence and I was a little disappointed with it in gusty conditions. It did fly slower for sure, probably and honest 6 mph slower. It was a great airplane and I really have nothing bad to say about it. I wanted to build an O-320 equipped cub for a few years now. It is hard to beat the handling characteristics of a stock wing. I also tried to build this one lighter then my last cub. The last cub was a wide body Javron and it weighed 1194. A lot of that additional weight was the big wing with double slotted flaps and aluminum ailerons which were also custom. It is all a compromise, fly slower add weight. There are some things that make an airplane fly slower that make sense and some don't for my kind of flying. The current 0-320 is a wide deck and it turns 2700 on take off. I would say it is around 170 hp. If feels much more sporty then the big wing cub I had but either one will do the job.
any reason you went with superflite vs other fabric? I'm a complete newbie when it comes to recovering but planning my first project - likely rebuild a champ to experimental. Also did you go dark on top of the wings/tail for sun/frost removal in cold months?
I have tried almost all of them now. I have a friend in Alaska that is using Superflight on his Cub and said it was less steps in the process so I figured I would give it a try. He liked it and said it was holding up well. I think it is a good process and probably a little faster then Polyfiber but they are all time consuming. Use what you know and it will all be good.

Just "Wow" on your flying....WOW!! Love it.....
Thanks!!
Glad to see you posting again Greg, your movies introduced me to this type of flying thanks a bunch.
That is great, glad I can inspire others.
agreed.. him and Steve Henry are why I do 99.9% off airport now.. awesome stuff...
keep these videos coming please, i love the raw footage with minimal narration style. it is perfect aviation content.
You got it.

Great stuff 👍 love the testing with the ditches!
Thank you! Cheers!
AWSOME skills Doc...Nobody demonstrates the REAL capabilities of what can be done in the backcountry better ! 😎
Thanks Swamp Monster
Real grass roots aviation riding those bumps, photography works well.

Cool, yeah it might have been me. Not many out playing anymore, there use to be a pretty big group of us.
That's some seriously cool testing.

I’ve got a smith cub on the way. I hope I can build it in 8 months! 1080lbs would be awesome too!
It is possible for sure. If you have never built an airplane before the time might be difficult.
Its a war horse! Im buying one!

👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻👍🏻 🧑🏻✈️and Air Nave 🛫VERY NICE !!! 🍀🇧🇷
Power to weight ratio and a pilot who knows what he is doing.
I would love to come out and fly your Super Cub
I bet you would, Not to many people I would give that opportunity to. Sorry

I might not have had them on yet in the video but I do have Micro VG's now

Awesome info. Curious of the covering process? Perhaps I missed it in the video.
No I did not make a video on it but there are a bunch out there. ua-cam.com/video/S8378X-m_4c/v-deo.html
Too much Greg - fly on 🥇
Thank you

As an Experimental you can pretty much make it whatever you want, I set mine for 2000 pound.
Love it !!!! Really cool! You use differential braking when doing tail up taxiing 180 turn?
Yes I am.
Nice airplane, is this the standard width fuselage from Javron or the wide body version?
yes standard
Javron struts ?
I’d your cub standard fuselage or 4 inch wider? Looks great I’m planning to order one from Jay to be shipped down to Australia any advice?
I did the 4" wider on the Super Cub before this one. If you are a big guy the 4" is nice or do need to haul a little more gear. I am small at 5'7" and 155 pounds so the stock fuselage is good.
looks like you dont use a steerable tail wheel?
That is correct have not in almost 20 years now.
Really nice build! Did you use Airframes aluminum struts? It looks like they are unpainted. If so have you seen any signs of corrosion? Thanks
@@mauleguy Thanks Greg, I have a set arriving soon and was planning to not paint them, that helps 👍

Thank you
@@mauleguy well.. you are the top men! I had to put your video in my fb page facebook.com/Pilotsholidays
Hey Greg, how did you lighten the wheels and brake discs? Thanks for sending the CC box, BTW. Cheers and Happy New Year
I have a CNC machine shop and took them down to .090-.100 everywhere and drilled the brake discs
Great looking cub! What was done to
Lighten the wheels and breaks if you don’t mind me asking?
Machine the heck out of them, .090 thick everywhere now. Drill the brake disc with holes
Other than 10:1 pistons did you do anything else to the engine ( ignition , header exhaust etc ) I have a new Murphy Rebel with a stock 160 HP 320 ..... How much power do you think your 320 has now ?
Vetterman Exhaust, my guess 170hp

I spent about that rebuilding Bushwacker 2.0
