I played the YAMAHA SY35 without any additional effects or eq.
The fully digital vector synthesizer Yamaha SY35 came out 1992 and was the successor of the successful SY22. The SY35 has partly new/different waveforms, new and better drum samples (16-bit).
Although instruments like Roland D-50 and Kawai K-1 have joysticks to mix parts of the sound, they are not vector synths. A real vector synth can reproduce the vector moves within a sound program.
The SY35 is a quite simple but effective vector synthesizer - simple to use and to program. No filters. One sound consist of 2 or 4 elements 2 FM (4-op frequency modulation) and 2 AWM (sample playback). You can record a vector move into a patch and play it back with a keystroke. You could edit and loop the vector moves, edit the speed... you can achieve some really interesting, dynamic sounds. Built in effect processor for reverb and delay. The effects can not be tweaked.
You hear some factory presets and patches created by me (beginning from 4:44). - Наука та технологія
Musical perfection that sounds like a dream. Hearing you improvise on any Synthesizer is amazing. You've got a lot of talent. Now I know this is the one for me; definitely going to buy one. Thanks for the Demonstration!
My keyboard player still uses this live. Some very interesting sounds, still. I can't believe it still works after all the punishment. Great video!
Epic demonstration of the SY-35. Sounds excellent in your hands! A+++++++++++++++++++++++++
thank you :-)
Cool demo, sounds surprisingly effective for such a simple synth concept.
Great atmospheric sounds.
I just picked one of these up in charity shop for fifty quid! (Including stand)
whaaaaat ?! lucky !
Thanks for the great demo! I had a TG33 back in the day which I have fond memories of, in particular that it was super easy to program.
I have a fully expanded SY55 that I got in 1991, along with all 7 WAVE / DATA card sets and all the other DATA ones too. Even to this day I am still surprised and delighted by what new sounds and control it can deliver. I later added a TG55 for more polyphony and extra card slots. These keyboards were built like a tank and mine still looks brand new! It's been gigged, taken to recording studios, used in my own home studio, taken to friends etc. They do not make them like this anymore!
The SY55 is a slimmed down SY77 without FM synthesis, whereas the SY35 has a different concept - vector synthesis
@@AnalogAudio1 That is correct. I nearly bought an SY35 last year for £100. I'd love an EX5 but they go for stupid money, and are rarely in good condition. I do have six PLG100 / 150 boards (DX, AN, AP,, DR, VL, VH) inside a few MU100R modules though.
Thanks for the demostration I have one of these synths, Is Awesome !!!
Love it! 😍
I want one of these as a controller for my wavestation A/D.
Its own sounds as well.
Had a line on a couple but bought a DM12 so I guess I'm still waiting for my "sigh"35. Haha.
Great video love the sounds and your handling of them.
Great Demo, well done!
thanks!
I still have my SY-35. I got it new in 1996. This is the thinnest sounding synth that I own. External effects can help.
great demo - many presets reminded me a lot of the Roland D-50
indeed, it has loops with all kind of noises as waveforms
yep, want one asap
Recently bought an sy35. To midi out to my Kord Wavestation A/D
2 favorite digi's are the Roland D50 and the Korg Wavestation.
The Yamaha SY35 is definitely in the van with those two.
That is very amazing, how have i not heard of this synthesizer before?
It was not very common
I bought the SY 35 in 1995 and I claimed it 8 years later, I regret it for some sounds that were nice.
I am always entertained. thanks you. If you do not mind, please teach me. Does this model also output MIDI data when playing the built-in demo song?
Would love to play around with some of your patches if your willing to share!
That's cool. I like vector synthenziers. I own a Krog Wavestation EX 🎹
hi. which one is better do you think ?
I owned a Korg Wavestation (it's broken) and I still own the Sy35. Objectively, the Wavestation is better but to be honest, it can be easily (and better) replaced by soft synths. For some strange reason, the Sy35 always cuts through each mix. For live usage I would go for a Wavestation. The sound is more full and you more varied.
@@Gekneveld Soundwise i would rather have use for a Sy35, as i happen to own a Kawai K5000s which is sort of a wavestation killer when it comes to pads and soundscapes.
Nice. Can't remember if I saw this already...but good to hear what you can do with its vector weirdness.
I love this synth... (SY22 & TG33 same) :-)
Tg33 similar sounds n patches but better, and easier to edit. Should have kept mine
My first synth... It doesn't work anymore but.. I miss it !
get it repaired! 😀👍
How dare you make me regret selling my SY-35, LOL
I sold my Yamaha DX7 😭
@@djdigital3806 oh dear. you will be ok
Thoughts before watching the video: OOh I have one of those! This is gonna make everything I play sound crap compared though isn't it...
Thoughts after watching the video: Ok there's a lot of sounds there that legit sound better/different to mine. Are your patches original or user programmed?
about the half are created by me (the second half of the video), the others are more or less factory presets
Loving it! 😍 Classic DIGITAL. Right? 😂
yes, fully digital :-)
... says AnalogAudio1 ;)
Hehehe... Rayy‘s Musikladen ,well at some point he'll run out of vintage analog gear to demo and have to tap into the digital, of which there is a whole era.😂
@@SyncdAlien haha :-), no worries, I will not run out of analogs so quickly...
Yes sir, classic DIGITAL baby.
It gets billed under the “VECTOR” family of synths. It does some things pretty well but, very limited. I certainly wouldn’t recommend it as a main synth in a collection. Falls short in a lot of ways. It’s a great thing to have around if you do a lot of sampling, or if you have an interest in programming & are looking for sounds to accent your music. Not a lot of control on the effects.
Yes, it's a bit limited compared to other digial synths. But it sounds not bad... I wish it had a filter, at least lowpass.
This would be great to hear without any of the internal effects. They are usually bad. I imagine this would be a great soundsource to go into a modular setup.
You say "effects can not be tweaked", but the dry/wet amount can be set i assume ?
this is possible
Sounds very good! The difference in clarity (high frequency brightness) compared to SY22/TG33 is significant. The sounds are naturally (partly) different, would be a bit pointless to do the same synth again, right? The system is otherwise the same, so I was wondering is it really 4-operator FM? SY22/TG33 has 2-op. I couldn't find confirmation quickly.
4 operator like DX11, V50, TX81Z and others
The SY35 uses 2x2 op pairs for it's FM. It could be argued to be 4op, but then only with one algorithm - two pairs paralell ;)
If you had one of the SY serie to grab, which one would it be ?
I find the SY22 better because of the special sample loops. The SY35 has more natural orchestral samples with higher sample quality, a bit more boring. But finally all 3 are great: SY22, SY35 and TG33.
so between the X5Dr+ midi clavier and a Yamaha SY 35, which one would you suggest me to buy, I just found both used at 240 euros... Thanks in advance for your help!!!
(Repertoire is mostly old school electronica a lá Kraftwerk, post punk and synth wave, but versatility is really welcome too...)
Korg has that multilayered pad attack that has will make you freeze, Yamaha has the glitch, the cheese, the sneeze...
I would clearly vote for the SY35.
@@AnalogAudio1 thank you so much for your response, friend, stay blessed!
Noice
There are differences from this and the Tg33/Sy22, aren't there?
yes, different, but better samples (16-bit)
@@AnalogAudio1
Ahhh, yes, now I remember! And maybe also some different ones.
La wavestation de Yamaha
Yamaha SY22 vs SY35, which one do you like the most?
SY22, because for my taste it has the more interesting synthetic AWM waveforms which are 8 or 12 bit. The SY35 has more acoustic instrument samples and 16 bit.
With the SY22 it is possible to record vectorstick motions, not sure if the 35 can do that!
@@vectrexboy5605 of course it can be done, the functions are the same.
Anybody with an idea how to factory reset it?
I have checked the manual but can't seem to find it.
I guess it doesn't have that, because the factory presets are permanent and the global settings are just a few
Would you be willing to sell your patches? They sound MUCH better than the presets!
in the first half of the video you hear factory presets :-)
AnalogAudio1 - yes I know... it’s the ones in the second half I am
Interested in!
@@Cyberpunk9000 not for sale, sorry...
@@AnalogAudio1You'll probably make more money from selling the patches than from the music you'll make with them these days...
@@MusicGearNuts I'm not so sure about that...
This synth screams for a chorus effect. Too bad it isn't built in.
Same opinion here.
well the sounds are consisting of 4 layers of sounds, quite complex textures. To smear them together through one "chorus" washer? I don't think it's the right thing to do... If you want chorused or analog sounds, this is not the right synth
@@AnalogAudio1 Not having a chorus limits the SY35 to cold PPG and DX-like sounds. With a chorus it could also produce warm strings, choirs and synth sounds.
@@AnalogAudio1 why is it not for analog sounds?
Is it not FM synthesis based, beyond the vector feature?
It sounds like the main purpose of this synth was to imitate Jean Michel Jarre style.
Which album(s) do you refer to?
@@AnalogAudio1 Equinoxe is the one that comes to my mind.
@@B1SCOOP I love JM Jarre and Equinoxe... but where you hear Equinoxe here is a mistery to me :-)
Fighting the urge not to get one because i have a tg33
mmmmm liminal
never liked the sys series not sure why after the M1 and Roland 8000d
i sold mine for 150€ ... how stupid i was :(
I love lots of old synths... I can't believe how bad this one sounds to me. Sorry 😃 but thanks a lot for demoing!
well this sounds "cold" and digital :-) but not bad either
@@AnalogAudio1 :) Cold and digital and not bad at all... would be Wavestation to me, just sayin ;) (ok, hard to compare)
L77kim77l I like cold & digital, I love warm & analog. Obvious solution: MIDI-layer a digital and an analog synth, e.g. my MODX FM engine and my Rev2. Sound heaven!
I like to layer minilogue and D05.
Or Dm6 and wavestation A/D. And that sorts thing.
@Xtra Spice Mikey And to add to tht......it's what u do with it
