    Your suggestions are cute but would probably double or triple the cost of the lantern, add to its complexity and lower its reliability. I think the current design which had a LOT of input from the BLF community has hit the sweet spot between functionality and cost.

    Personally I think it’s a superb lantern and a brilliant collaboration of BLF members such as DBSAR and Toykeeper, and the manufacturing skills of Sofirn. The modes I use most are easily remembered.
    Wanting Bluetooth control, timers, proximity alarms and calling the lantern a dead end is ridiculous. I mean, the lantern you used as a comparison runs on D-cells and has a AAA torch that fits in the top. The LT1 is way ahead of that. Who needs their phone to operate a lantern? Some people are never satisfied. Who needs the Anduril map to switch a lantern on and off? 3 clicks to voltage check, sleep mode etc, 3 clicks and hold for candle, lightning, strobes. 4 clicks to lockout. Yeah, I so want to dig out my phone to do that. Jeez, just get on with camping and not having to rely on a smartphone to live. Top job BLF people, best electric lantern ever. Apologies, I won’t be subscribing.

      Respect for your reply but I still think that the UI is the limiting factor on a otherwise superb product.

    • @Supernice65
      @Supernice65 4 роки тому +4

      The UI is pretty simple to be honest, but I have a Sofirn FW3A and Emisar flashlights that both use Anduril. What I find annoying is that the limitation of the UI lies with you, not with the design, yet you’ve called the lantern a dead end because you can’t work it properly. I mean Zebralight came along with a useful, but often annoying UI for all their lights, and users either learned it or chose something that suited them better. You’re saying that a lantern that runs on 1-4 18650 batteries, has a very clever and complex UI, the lantern you compared to a D-cell lantern isn’t good enough for two reasons. You cannot remember simple things, and you like to operate everything via your phone? The problem is at your end, not with the lantern. I mean it’s only one click for on and to up the output, 2 to lower output, 3 to change warm-cool, 3 to go into blinking, 3 to go into battery check, candle, 4 for lockout. That’s a whole load of stuff and you only need to be able to count to four to do it.

    • @Yaxez
      @Yaxez 4 роки тому +3

      @@Supernice65 Calling this UI simple is a bit of a stretch. If you leave this lantern on the shelf for 6 months, any regular person would have to check the manual to be able to operate it efficiently again. Otherwise you don't know what the hell you're doing.
      If it was simple, there would be no need for an in depth manual.

    • @Supernice65
      @Supernice65 4 роки тому +4

      @yaxez There is a manual, but also a simple flowchart. You guys and gals that want to operate the light via your mobile phones could also have a screenshot of it in your photos. Basic operation doesn’t need a manual, and occasional use when maybe you’ve forgotten something, then you have a picture.

      @@Supernice65 I use Anduril lights. I have a couple of them, I am also on BLF. And I think Anduril is a bad interface for non-flashlight enthusiasts. And apparently TK thinks so too herself, because she is overhauling the muggle mode completely (you might have read her current thread). It even is a bad interface for many flashlight enthusiasts. Even if you already have an Anduril light and use it daily (like I do). Nobody will remember how to go to the blinkies, candle light flicker mode etc. Because you normally don't use it. It's just a completely cluttered interface with goodies for enthusiasts.
      And also just because the reviewer wants features you don't think are necessary does not make his wishes somehow magically invalid and ridiculous. That's one of the most annoying aspects of BLF. So many people dislike and oppose new ideas. It feels like a group of 55+ people who are too old to give a damn about "that new stuff". "IT DOESN'T RUN ANDURIL? NOT INTERESTED!!!" (according to many on BLF). Which is why we are getting ONLY Anduril lights for years now. And since the FW3A we have been FLOODED with backtail e-switch lights? Other concepts? Double e-switch? Community ring-switch lights? Non-existent. I think a bluetooth-controlled light is a great idea. You can still operate the basic functions on the light as always. But you can also use an App to find and use the hidden functions. Or use it remotely when you have the lamp hangin somehwere above you in a tree. Or even reprogram the light completey to your liking. Or create new lighting patterns yourself in the app. It is doable. It's just that nobody gives a fuck.

    This lantern is about as perfect as it gets. Anduril can seem complicated at first but it's really not. Infact my 68 year old mother requested a couple to have during hurricane season. She uses them regularly on her patio in the evening and I have never once heard that woman complain about being to difficult to use. If a 68 year old woman can figure out the anduril system with out a phone and Bluetooth, then I feel most people could easily do so as well.
    I would never own a flashlight that required a completely separate device to operate it. If you can't figure out a few click patterns, stick to convoy, or any other pleeb interface that comes on cheaper lights found at Walmart. If you want an advanced lighting system that works as well for a patio party as it does a natural disaster, and is so simple a 68 year old woman can comfortably use it, buy the lt1, if you want a gimmick go buy a Bluetooth light.

    Now that you mention it it is a little weird that tiny keychain lights have more buttons than large Anduril devices. Maybe this could serve as inspiration for future lanterns the way the Zebralight H60 paved the way for all the 18650 headlamps made today. Given this was largely adapted from off-the-shelf parts it is quite ambitious for what it is.
    Torches with e-switches and ramping is still a relatively new innovation. Given the small market for these products compared to bluetooth speakers I doubt there'll be the incentive for bluetooth connectivity and android apps. The whole product is more of a "labour of love" than a commercially viable product.
    I have one on order at the time of writing and look forward to testing it. Thankfully I remember the basic modes from using my FW3A.

    I have mixed feelings about your view. Well no actually I agree with your point of view 100%, matter of fact it's one of those brilliant ideas that while you're you're hearing it laid out you think of how great of an idea and how you wish you thought of it yourself! The kind that it's just like yeah what he said!! And really if the BLF wizards that are behind this great project see or hear of this video/idea of bluetooth integration, they'd be kind of ignorant boarder line foolish not to at least "look into it". That being said, I suppose that would be getting to the point of crossing the fine line of: Affordable, well built/designed, and innovative whenever financially possible, to: Bells, whistles, frills, and thrills. Which, of course always equates to: MORE $$$$!! And I not sure at all of what actual costs would be but I have a feeling possibly developing the app, while maybe not so much of a major up taking, and tbh I have no idea exactly what would be involved except I know It would take people and at least SOME time, and again people's time no matter how small is worth $$$ if not MORE than $$$ in all actuality, especially people with semi-special skills and or positions in which app development is possible.. so, that combined with the fact that andruil is already up running and thriving, tho like you I'm not the biggest fan of it personally but regardless if what we think it does prove to be successful up to date, so being that they already have the software it was really just second nature integrating it into this lantern. Which leads me to my last point which, you actually said it yourself near the end of your review, you turn it on/off and ramp it up and down for brightness +/- which really is what 80, 90% if not more, Of the lights true purpose and function?? So considering they already had the software I suppose you could just chop all the extra blinkyz, stroby, self cleaning, and tractor beam stuff, (all the bullshit) up to being a bonus, special features if you will. I actually am watching this video right now fur hell deciding if I should purchase it or not and I think I just might. Great review. With that being said, I disagree about the Bluetooth. Sofirn is a flashlight manufacturer, not a tech company. They don't have web designers to create an app. And if they did, this would be a "smart lantern" and cost $300. 99% of people won't use the extras. And if they do, it's still not hard to use the cheat sheet. Perhaps we should start operating our flashlights with our phones. I mean c'mon be real here. They could have just left all those extra lighting options out and you wouldn't even miss them. Meaning you can use the lantern with regular functionality quite easily. The regular person who wants a great lantern for emergencies or a camping lantern doesn't need lightning mode. But yet it's there just in case they do. It's not very difficult to look at a guide and press a button a few times.

      Thank you for your take on the topic! I use the lantern a lot and my wife does too. It is a great light for video communication (webcam) among other things. That means the UI is simple enough for her to use. On the other hand a few weeks ago I was looking for a deeper function and it took me several attempts. Almost had to pull out the manual. The one button UI is way less than perfect. I have a video light that has a few switches and many more functions than the Sofirn lantern which are covered in an intuitive and efficient manner. On top of it it has a display and comes with pretty much the same price tag. So yes, a better job could be done for the money. Anduril is something for flashaholics and not for professional users. The latter group will have no patience with such a UI. Now do we need bluetooth and apps? No. But my criticism stands no matter what solution for it is proposed.

    however, it occurred to me that there is a downside to implementing this, and it's not just the cost of adding a SoC into the device. the main drawback is power efficiency. when you start adding the microprocessor and radio chipsets into the device, that are required for bluetooth, and memory for the kind of functions you describe, this draws considerably more power than typical hardware running anduril. it would made the lights have much higher standby power draw, which will deplete batteries much more quickly.
    for example, i measured the draw of my d4v2 Ti e21a 3500k, with aux in low; battery voltage mode, my multimeter shows .06 mA .. with a 3500 mah battery, that's over 6 years, and that's with aux leds ON. with them off, my meter shows the base parasitic draw of the driver / electronic switch to be .03 mA , it'll take over 12 years to drain a single 3500 18650. if you start adding bluetooth radios and the soc chipsets required to do bluetooth, you will have parasitic draw which will kill batteries in a few months instead of years of standby.
    that's not to say there wouldn't necessarily be a market for what you describe.. if we have philips light bulbs in our homes which we can control via wifi, change colors and color temperature, it's not that big if a stretch to imagine lanterns which have similar functionality. however, light bulbs are plugged into the grid, so there will always be a sacrifice in efficiency with battery powered tools, when you start making them more complicated. i like my enthusiast lights to have nice low power moonlight modes, so that if they are ever needed in a long term emergency with limited power, they can provide usable light for long periods without using up extra resources.

      All very good points. But I lock my lights out mechanically when I store them away. And when they are in regular use the drain hardly matters. The bluetooth is missing because Sofirn does not yet have the routine or tech base to implement it well. That is my guess at least.

      No, it does not. It is literally not a good idea to squeeze complex functionality through one button even if you implement the very best UI (which you pretty much get with Anduril). Ask the outdoorsman, worker, camper - people who every year buy truckloads of lanterns. No disrespect to the work of the community behind the lamp but I take fault with their basic design premise. And honestly Sofirn does not (yet) have the routine to (quickly) realize bluetooth (with software) or a more complex multi-switch setup. Other manufacturers roll out OLED-displays and quite clever UI's on their lamps which would serve a lamp well that offers a ton of functionality. They worked with certain premises and under certain constraints - within those they did an amazing job. But: It is a dead end. That is not to say that it is not a good product - I use mine a lot. It is a very solid light, great quality!

His points, are pointless, Bluetooth would had to cost to much, (we already explored that idea) (more thant double to triple the cost) to have the AP developed.) I was sent here by other reviewers and flashlight & lantern enthusiasts who call this review appaling & just a rant, & more of a hate rant against a lantern that was developed for people who need a great lantern. We know not everyobody can't be happy with everything, though at least i know the LT1 made nearly a million other very happy. I didn't spend hundreds of hours for free designing & developing a lantern that does what a lantern is ment to do, is offer a great portable light/lantern that has a great color rendering, great modes & features, high-quality build, a long run time on high-modes, and the ablity to recharge from a 10-watt portable solar panel to make it a true self-sustaiable light that can light the night as much as a 40 watt in bulb can every night. This WearandTear guy is a negative arrogant know-it-all. Lets see him do better and get it in production.

      @@DBSARlight So you guys keep developing lights which offer layers of function with quality components to then implement the best UI in the world that is based on the very idea that more than a single electronic switch is an abomination and must be avoided? Packing a light with electronics and software and then stopping short of its potential? I'm sure you did the best job with the constraints you had to deal with. However, there are questions of design philisophy. It really depends if you push more for art or towards tools. For art it might be ok to consult an Anduril flowchart and train your motorskills to unlock obscure modes. Tools need to be simpler than that even if they offer a lot of modes. I'm not a collector. I really appreciate lights and also Anduril UI's. But there is a limit to this approach. I was often quite impressed by lights (and other tools) to just see them fail (or go wasted in part) by users who just wanted to use the thing real quick in a straightforward way. No disrespect meant.
