I think this song is about Japan's tendency to favor tradition above all. I've heard stories of outrageous things happening just because tradition dictated it so, even though the situation should have been handled differently. The aliens (ワレワレ "we") are recent generations criticizing and questioning the values of older generations, hence the mention of anachronistic laws. This is all just interpretation of the translation that Kai provided, though.
I don't think it's meant to be specific to Japan, I think that's just because they're Japanese. Personally it comes across to me as referring to people that want to make everything fit their preconceived ideas(& dumbing down/stereotyping things in the process), whether from tradition or a choice to belong to a specific group. With the advent of the internet, that's become rampant.
It seems like a very "Fuck the boomers" kinda song which... Yeah sounds about right. But tbh with how subjective music is, the meaning can vary wildly from listener to listener.
tradition is a good thing. we've seen what abandoning it has done to the west. so many mentally ill people and they are being encouraged. now they are trying to infect japan as well
I'd venture to say that that exists everywhere in the world. As people get older, they become less and less willing to change the way they think. A result of this is that they become, as you said, especially traditionalistic. That's a fact about humans in general I think, not only Japanese people -- I can tell you for damn sure it's true in the US, too. I think what Utsu-P is saying, ultimately, is that when one becomes unwilling to ever admit to being wrong, just so they can feel good about themselves, and even enemize the new generation that developed better ways of living, they will be left behind without mercy.
*"Nice to meet you, 'we' are the extraterrestrials"* stating the obvious, 'extraterrestrials' is most probably a metaphor for minorities *"You said "everything on TV is a lie" and "everything on the net is a lie" Are "we" now lying to you too?"* aghhghsdff the moment I saw this line I started grinning, maybe I'm just projecting but this feels like a deliberate reference to Trump/his supporters "fake news media" thing, and it had me immediately excited to see how the rest of the song was gonna play out. *"You feel like you know everything about the world"* It occurred to me at this point that someone could try and argue this song is about 'science' or the vague idea of 'people who push their beliefs as facts' (Though briefly looking at the comments, I didn't see anyone arguing this). I still wanna talk about the idea anyways tho because it's 1:28 in the morning and I'm amped up on coffee and this song lol. I feel like that idea immediately falls apart because science isn't about establishing strict rules that then ARE NOT ALLOWED TO CHANGE AT ALL, it's about observing the world and trying to figure out how it works (scientific 'laws' are just called laws because we very consistently have found them to hold up, and if they ever get consistently found to be inaccurate, then they get adjusted or discarded). The only people who really see science as a rigid, unchanging thing are people who fetishize the idea of 'science' so that they can feel super smart and reasonable *DEATH OF THE LAW That law is outdated DEATH OF THE THOUGHT That ideology is outdated DEATH OF THE LAW And when those laws are dead, DEATH OF THE THOUGHT everything begins* yassssss go off Utsu (this section got me pretty hyped lmao) *"If you keep treating "us" as invaders, You will die down the drains of unchanging times"* yessss. Like, it feels like it looks at the people who are hurt by conservatism and is like 'no, you're right to be angry, this is bullshit' and, again, that just feels really refreshing, and legit really _good_. I can't actually remember ever really feeling this empowered by a song before. thanks Utsu, ya fuckin valid ^-^ Plus the song itself is a fucking BOP (i fucking love the way Utsu-P blends metal and electronic, I love the way Miku is tuned, the visuals are cool as shit (Skeleton-lawlawlaw miku is really fuckin cool and freaky looking)) and it's just. really good. One of the (sadly) rare cases where I actually really like some of the new music. I have to say though, that breakdown at 3:00 is so fucking sick. Love the sound design, love the rhythm, love the riff. It's just fantastic
I feel like Utsu lately has been making a shift in the right direction. For me he reached his peak with Moksha, from then on it was a slow and steady decline, but nowadays I'm REALLY into some of those new songs. This one's definitely hot fire.
Artists express themselves differently over the years. I know my own friend who did a lot of hardcore in the early 00's and he's moved from that to rap because he's not angry anymore. Could be that Utsu is a similar boat in that he no longer feels the need to express with such harsh music. As well his production work has improved by leaps and bounds. I love his blending of metal and electronic music and have always loved such music styles and with every song he gets better and better. I love the experimentation he has done over the years and even with that Moksha is one of my favorite albums by him. I will always be an Utsu fan because his music speaks to me and has continued to do so over the 8 years I've been listening.
After I first heard your music and quickly got addicted, I immediately started looking for other artists that made similar. I found a few kinda close ones like Cepheid and Okame-P, but Utsu-P is just on another level from everyone else. He truly is the king of this genre.
I see everyone commenting about how good the song is musically(and I can't blame them) but can we get some love for the song being a commentary on xenophobia and close-minded bigotry?
