  • Moynihan Train Hall is an expansion of Pennsylvania Station, the main intercity and commuter rail station in New York City, into the city's former main post office building, the James A. Farley Building. Located between Eighth Avenue, Ninth Avenue, 31st Street, and 33rd Street in Midtown Manhattan, the annex provides new access to most of Penn Station's platforms for Amtrak and Long Island Rail Road passengers, serving 17 of the station's 21 tracks. The hall is named after Daniel Patrick Moynihan, the U.S. Senator who had originally championed the plan. The building's exterior resembles that of the original Penn Station; both buildings were designed by the same architect, McKim, Mead & White, in the Beaux-Arts style.
The 486,000 sq ft complex was built to alleviate congestion in Penn Station; the complex saw 650,000 daily riders before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The $1.6 billion renovations restored the Beaux-Arts Farley Building, a designated landmark, and added a central atrium with a glass roof. Moynihan Train Hall includes retail space, a 320-seat waiting area, and public restrooms. The hall is decorated with three artworks: a ceiling triptych named Go, a group of photographic panels, and a sculptural group.
The project had been in consideration since the early 1990s, with the first blueprints made public in 1993. However, several previous plans had failed because of a lack of funding and logistical difficulties. Amtrak withdrew as a tenant in 2004 but returned after the Farley Building was sold to the New York state government in 2006. The first phase, involving an expansion of a concourse under the Farley Building, started in 2010 and was completed in June 2017. Construction of the train hall proper commenced in 2017. The train hall opened on January 1, 2021.

It better be well policed or, sadly, it will be a failure. The current administration has been a failure in terms of making NYC safe.

Very helpful for a native NYC'er who spent half their life commuting through Penn Station, but have been away for a few years. This was a totally new landscape for me, which is kind of bizzare! Now, I have some clue as to what up, yo! Cheers

In a couple years time Penn Station is going to be brand new. They are building new infrastructure under Grand Central Terminal as well. It's going to be epic when completely finished

My only criticism, and it's my only, because I love this station: THERE ARE NO PLACES TO SIT! INSTALL A BENCH OR SOMETHING!

They do have large seating areas off to the sides, however they're only for ticket holders

Once all the services (Amtrack, MTA, LIRR, NJ Transit and NYC subway) are connected the city will be so much better for it. Now the region needs to get serious about 250-350+ mph high speed trains from Washington DC to Boston.

thank you for a very nice tour of the train hall. My husband and I have been through many train stations before, but never through New York...Moynihan Train Hall is an amazing place and you showed us quite a bit of the station, but you never showed the waiting areas or the Metropolitan Lounge which is very important to those who need a layover between trains. Nice job otherwise.

Good grief Madison Square Garden is an ugly building!! What was New York thinking when they allowed beautiful and magnificent Penn Station to be stupidly torn down?! The new station is very nice but honestly it's only a shadow of what the original Penn Station was. As my "Gramps" used to say, "it's better than a kick in the pants".

I agree with you. Also - "It's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick".
