Many people ask how to add apps to windows 10 image, so when you install windows 100, it installs all your software and applications during the installation process.
dism -h
dism /capture-image -h
You will need to edit this command to your drives:

I think this is pointless today, but requested video. What do you guys think? let me know below.
I would have to agree..Install win 10 on a machine with all your apps.. boot to Sergi strelec, gandelf or hirens..clone to external SSD as many as you need..Loads of different cloning options..Love your channel and have been following for years but just agree with what you said above no disrespect to anyone just an opinion
Definitely not pointless! This is awesome! I never knew this could be done 😄
For the guys in the know this might be useless but for us juniors it's nice to see how it's all constructed .
That way I get a better understanding it will give me the confidence to go more advanced.
Thank's Brother For Accept My Request!💝
@@paddiedelaney cloning also clones the unique SID of each installation and sometimes that does NOT play well on a network - having identical SIDs. therefore sysprepping the installation then immediately cloning is ideal. this way each clone will boot up to a generalized instance and into OOBE for custom settings.
Thank you very much Brian. I do not think any of your guides are pointless. They are, and will continue to be very useful. Keep up the good work.
Glad you like them!
@@Britec09 does sysprep only image the C drive or all the drives? I have Ubuntu (wsl) on a D drive.
Great video & tutorial! It's not pointless, in fact quite the opposite for us beginners. Keep it coming, Brian. Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Ugh not having a US or UK keyboard while doing this is awful. I have to stare at a picture of the US layout and guess which keys those correspond to on my keyboard.
This is a great setup not only to include 3rd party software but to not have to go through the tedious process of installing manually certain software need to allow other softwares to work properly. An example being: browser's, Java, QuickTime, .NET Framework, driver's, VLC, plug-in's, etc.
this is never pointless at all. this is really awesome and really appreciated, thanks so much.
Thanks mate! I used this method to image my entire install to transfer it to another drive, because for some reason any cloning software would not work, but this did, and as a bonus now I have a backup of my entire system in case anything ever happens to it :]
I was looking for this kind of video from you yesterday and today, and now its here. Thank you
Just what I have been looking for! Thank you so much, Brian 😊😊
Seriously, thank you for this video. It taught me so much and helped me in my job to get this team more efficient! Thank you again!
SIMILAR AND PERHAPS EASIER METHOD: I install my programs ("all the usual suspects"), then use an Acronis backup that I save. Yes, it is usually for that particular machine, HOWEVER, Acronis does have an included effective method for restoring a backup to dissimilar hardware, i.e., to a new computer that's pretty straightforward. Great video, Brian, thank you!
You're welcome
Thanks, Brian. One never knows when you might need it.
Thank you for this great and easy to understand video. I have 2 questions :
1. I saw you've mentioned that the process be created via VMware instead of Virtualbox , Does it need some special setting in VM for that ? (I ask because you've mentioned guest wrap on the virtualbox which I'm not familiar with).
2. I understand that it helps creating the image with the installed program but WITHOUT registry changes I've made to the system or shortcuts I've created on the desktop and updates applied to the OS ?
Thank you !
exactly what i asked for. thank you!
Thanks for the tutorial, I've been trying to figure out how to do this for days
spent 2 days looking and researching for this exact solution thank you!!!!
its an easy way to do it, but tbh I've not used sysprep since I left a working in a production environment 20 years ago where hundreds of machines each week were built with similar configs, sysprep images were deployed multicast with ghost back then, but this is a good way to keep a user profile free install, which can be very useful if your switching platforms, the way you have presented it here also saves someone not used to it setting up ESD MSR & utility/recovery partitions, and getting the boot config right if they are using UEFI properly - I just use a script with positional %variables on the commandline to get the job done, and come back when its finished - I like my coffee! keep it coming
Hi, would you be kind enough to walk me through your script commands?
Thank you. For learning purpose, I needed to know this process.
I always wanted to learn how to do this
Thank you!!
Brian, it would help if you circled things, like when you checked to "insert Guest Editions CD image." You went so fast, I couldn't follow you. A larger, perhaps transparent, cursor might have been easier to follow also. Yes, I do realize it takes a lot of time and planning to produce your excellent videos and I very much appreciate what you do! Thank you!!
Thanks for the tip!
I think it's still useful. Thanks for taking the time.
You're welcome!
Just so you know, i needed this!
Very usefull for a new guy into the virtual field. Thanks a lot Brian! 🎯
he is dan
dan the man
thanks a lot, actually this video is very helpful for people like me who is forced to install windows for a lot of people i know and i don't want to redo the same postinstalling windows softwares progress
Brian, first of all, congratulations on the video, that's exactly what I needed here at work, I'm just having a problem....
After the whole process was done, I went to install it on a physical machine and that's when the problems appeared...
During the installation process, all the options appeared again (connection type, user account creation, if the configuration is for personal or corporate use...)
Within Windows I verified that the wallpaper and other settings were not imported. Do you have any idea what could have happened?
Excellent video, cheers Brian
Glad you enjoyed it
Estimado señor, ¡Excelente manera de explicación! Le estoy muy agradecido, señor. Saludos, Basavaraj de la India.
Man thanks a lot. In our company we need to reinstall on every pc some software and these custom images are a big time savef 👍
Dear Sir,
Great way of explanation!
I am very heartily thankful to you sir.
Regards,
Basavaraj from India.
Thank you for the video! Curious why WinPE is needed, does DISM require the captured OS to be offline?
I used to think sysprep used to remove the apps that wasn't Microsoft ones.
So this is handy as I can create a custom iso of a completed setup and have auto restore iso/usb for customer pcs
Hi Brian, the programs that u choose and get installed, that u pick from the lists in ninite, are they just executables? coz u said u can just go to the various websites??
Great video, much appreciated.
Not pointless at all this great for people like me who are still beginning all this stuff so cheers for that
Thanks
Thank you , great job!
It worked! Thanks!
I have 2 questions:
- Is it possible to create a image from after-instalation? the windows asks to create a new admin user and those annoying questions.
- Is there a problem with the OEM licence keys? Sysprep ignore the old key?
Did you go into sysprep audit mode during install screen to do the customization or did you actually go through setup and create user account first?
Hi, this is like cloning? Or is a really fresh install with apps and without register error? i used to see an old windows 7 iso who installed softwares while installing windows (during setup process). So it was really a fresh install + fresh install software, and not just a VHD clone who run under window setup installed (so the HD get cloned)
Thanks this helps allot :) now i can finally make a decent windows install :)
Useful if some of your apps don't often receive updates then sure integrate then, also depends how often you reinstall your Windows OS.
I knew this already but its still well documented.
thank you so much for the very very informative Video Bless you
if the applications have an MSI installer i remember you could add them to a folder on the resulting USB drive and with the unnatended txt file have them install with the rest of the OS... but that may be for an older version of Windows
I just realized this video is having a birthday soon!
it would definitely be handy for me... Once I dust off my dvd-rws at home, I think I'll make template ISOs for the basic necessities on each OS. Save me time when I switch.
Thank you so much for this video.
i just make a wds image for my environment by taking help from your video, thanks.
Would this work the same way for install files and folders? For example, I want to have a folder already pre-made WITHOUT the applications already installed.
Still hasn't tried, but i don't think is pointless at all. As a person that works in IT, and have to install Win10 several times a week, this will save me a lot of time.
My god. I first though you were SpaceInvaderZero when I heard your voice. Very easy to understand directions. Thanks
Outstanding video!
Thank you very much!
great work dude...
Too many thanks, this will help me.
This procedure can pre-install system drivers and printers?
Hi, I need to know! If I do that the software (Chrome, Mozilla, BSPlayer and so on) that are saved (in the image file that you will put after that in the windows iso installation) will be automatically installed from 0 (I mean the software), or they will already have the settings that I have now. (for example: if I will customize my Chrome, I will save all my bookmarks, when the windows will be installed with Chrome inside, Chrome will have also my customized settings?). One more question: can you do that with games? I really want to customize my windows and I need to know if this can be workaround, so I don't want to waste time every time I format the PC, this will be super good and practical for people like me..
Waiting for your answer, thanks in advance!
great job, nice video.
Would this work if you enabled IIS and have MS SQL installed? So that the possibly complicated configuration for the two can be skipped.
Great video. Can I change the wallpaper background to be pre-installed with this method?
Hello, thanks for this amazing tutorial. I still need some help if it possible.
I've tried to capture an image after sysprep, and I have created an answer file (autounattend.xml). I managed to skip most of the settings, the only pending thing being the new user creation (because of the OOBE) when I deploy the image on another system. The reason I want to skip that, is because I have already defined users (admin and non-admin) on the system I've cloned, and I don't want to be prompted with creation of another user.
What I want is just to deploy the image, and to have a system identical to the one from where I captured the image. I know clonezilla can create this image, but then the security identifiers are not cleaned (generalized) as would sysprep do, which may cause issues when deployed on another system.
I saw that SkipMachineOOBE and SkipUserOOBE are deprecated and I cannot figure out a way to do that.
Can you please help me with that?
Thank you in advance!
Thanks I am looking for that way for windows install Thanks sir
your work is amazing. I want to create an image of my lenovo laptop so i can install the os with patches and other softwares on similar other lenovo laptops as we usually deploy multiple machines for new employees. In this case, can i use the vm method or can i sysprep the laptop and then use hirenbootcd and boot from usb and create a .wim file and save it to my usb or external HDD
Thank you!
there is a problem, which is when i install other pc using this customized preinstalled software + windows 10 iso, the pc is not activate automatically. I am using digital license activation(DLA) version windows 10 pro
A hundred steps later... If it's only for inserting applications, the "PatchMy PC" program does the job perfectly. In addition, it installs the most recent versions of the desired applications and this avoids having to repeat all these steps during a new version of Windows.
You always have to balance the amount of effort you put in according to the end result. I regularly install different versions of Windows for my clients and the fewer steps there are, the fewer errors that can slip in and the easier to fix when needed. Simplicity always think of simplicity.
Congratulations anyway for this well done and useful site. 👍👍👍
Cheers for that, have just checked reviews and it's all that you say 👍👍
@@jonnyshoestring9368 Thank you sir! 😃
The problem with patch my PC and the like is that you're getting content from a predefined set of locations and you don't know what's being installed or how it's being installed. Your best bet is just to get your programs and/or drivers manually. Sure, it's slower, but you have more power over what you install and how you install things.
@@seediffusion Thank you for your comment. I checked in the log file and the downloads are going directly to the different app sites and not just one site.
I am interested into such image that will not only pre-install apps that I needed, rather the OS Configs we required.
Also, some sort of automation that install drivers for each pc according to the model.
At end, we only have to run our winstallation media, and boom, just go and use your PC! and everything is up to date already.
Any thoughts on that?
So if you get a new PC you still have to install windows from fresh, transfer your windows key somehow then reload all of your software.
I assume you can just make a clone copy and put it in your new PC.
Thank you 👍👍👍👍
I've been wanting this for a very long time, thank you for this fantastic tutorial!
My question is: is it also possible in Win11Pro?
I would be happy to hear from you, thank you in advance: V. Martins
Thanks for this video, i have a question, Windows is asking for an activation key, and all our pc are purchased through Dell, and they come activated.
Its necessary, Win10 is what Win7 was for years for many users that doesnt need massive new protection but win11 would cripple their pcs
Microsoft have never made an os from scratch
I'm pretty sure there is a built in app that does this in the system32 folder, but I forgot what its called. It removes your user acconut and its like a windows reset, but it leaves all drivers and installed programs.
So far so good 🙂
Defo useful!
Can we put AMD or Nvidia drivers too?
Could you please answer sir, can i do exact same thing with bootable usb WinPE? I want to make an iso file from my actual Windows installation, not in virtual machine.
There is a problem when I install customized Windows. I must log in with a new account, and the first account also remains present within Windows. Thus, there are two accounts in Windows. Can I modify the copy in that the user does not add an account because it was already added when I customized the copy?
is there an equivalent tool for linux to install the OS, user profile, system setting programs and themes, etc
When I do this with Windows 11 there is no drive letter assigned to the main partion or the image storage partition, I have to use DiskPart to assigned one. I know that VirtialBox turns on EFI to replicate UEFI.
Anyone else have this issue?
Using this process, do windows and/or app setting (or even uninstalled windows bloat) will persist?
Thanks!!!!
Great video, I was curious myself how to do this nowadays, thank you. Silly question why does this .wim file show Word associated to your iso?
Thanks for watching
i can probably use this to preinstall drivers on a duel gpu laptop, the main screen is broken and the discrete will only display to hdmi if it has drivers installed
Makes me wish that the Microsoft Transfer Wizard was still around. 😀 I still have the cable somewhere in a box of old stuff.
I remember that
Can i also make it so that my motherboard drivers and mouse software is installed or can it not handle that? and will it load my background and stuff as well and should i or should i not login on my microsoft account?
Hi there @britec09!
Thank you for your guide.
I was able to create an ISO successfully by following your guide. Then I used Rufus to create a bootable USB. When I booted using the usb and tried to install Windows, it says Windows could not display the images available for installation.
Do you have any suggestion on fixing this?
Update: I noticed Edition, Installation and Description are undefined in the install.wim I created.
Anyone advice on setting the edition, installation and description when creating the wim?
@@shenathsilva7699 Use GImageX
Can I add Adobe Photoshop and Premiere applications to the copy as well? I don't care even if the copy size increases
I kept getting erors when I did this my laptop has some proprietary hardware on it where you have to connect an enthernet cable to it just for windows update to install the wifi driver and everything else.
May i know it still work after installation any app like Microsoft office and Update app in Microsoft store then convert to Custom Windows 10.iso ?
after convert to iso and start install windows error : windows could not collect information for {OSImage} since the specified image file [install.win] does not exist
If I activate the system through KMS and create a custom Windows ISO image, will the system remain activated when I install it on other PCs?
Question: Can I capture the image as a liveCD like Hiren's? If so, how do I accomplish this? Thanks
Hi upon running sysprep i am getting this error "sysprep unable to validate your windows installation" any solution to this ??
For the VM can you use the Windows Sandbox that is built into Windows?
What difference is there in installing Windows on a client's machine, then using Paragon to make an iso of that system that already has everything and putting it on Ventoy is much easier
What if you create image then the Windows is Home licence, then you install to a laptop with Windows Pro licence, theres any conflict?
Does this process include programs you install and customize that aren't on Ninite? Also if I tweak the OS and change options and stuff, do all the tweaks stay in the image?
I have the same questions but no answers yet :(
Hi @Britec09, will it copy all the updated driver and windows update?
Hi, I am getting an error when I boot into my custom iso file, it says "windows could not display images available for installation". Any idea why this is happening?
Hello,
i have this issue while using DISM via winPE
Error 1062 the service has not been started and does not move more than 1.0%
This doesn't work, first Sysprep threw an error, but i solved it, secondly, when i extracted the wim and embedded it into the iso and tried to install it, it was showing an error “Can not show image…”
Nice one Brian I have often thought I would like to try a virtual machine as I have a spare internal spinner that hardly ever gets used so my query is if I choose the spare (1TB) drive for the virtual machine how do I boot to the virtual machine which I would like to try Linux Mint again? That is presuming I can use Linux Mint on the virtual machine.
You can use what ever OS you like
Does it work for Win11. Not at all pointless to have my own custom .ISO (s?) saving all the hassle of setting up windows with my own standardised programs and presumably security settings as well. I will be testing this out.
Are all versions of Windows compatible with this, or are there versions of Windowsthat cannot be image ?
