She made erbody enjoy traffic jams singing tracks like these. #sweetmelody
They tried to tell her that she'd lose her career over this over collabs like this but she did it anyways and look now she's even more of a legend because of it ahead of her time no doubt
Nykole Jenkins fun fact
Not only she did it anyways..... Every single pop-R&B artist followed her,.
M.C.did it first, and left a trademark.
And started a mooch off Hip-Hop style and popularity then completely disown it and refuse to acknowledge it as an influence trend
@Vanity Belle Mariah Carey is Black. And she was probably more of an O.D.B fan than me and you back then. She used to ride around in her limo playing his music in her pink box she had. Facts..............
They say she wanted to reach the streets like Mary J Blige so when ppl were feeling this on a street level it brought tears to her eyes

People don’t even know that Mariah actually risked her career to put this song out and bridge the gap between pop and rap. She’s a pioneer. & She did this without her label’s approval. They were heavily against this collaboration. This is why I respect Mariah so much as not only a singer but a true artist.
I’ve always had extra respect for artists who write their own music, especially when the music is in-depth, of substance, and meaningful. She has 18 number 1s and wrote 17 of them. She’s really a one in a million.
Unmatched as far as a female r&b/ pop artists go. Zero competition if you include: amount of number 1s, amount of records sold, writing your OWN music, vocal range, and longevity.
19 number 1's
*19 numbers one!!!!!!!!
Odb charged her 50k total for this ft
True googleer over here showing people how to quote a simple google search. Have my upvote tho.. god damn brainless gen z's
I have the most high respect for Mariah. She worked hard to get where she is at now. And no matter how many times she messes up while doing a concert she did her time. And she can do whatever she wants.
This version of Fantasy should be registered in US library of congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant". Mariah risked her career when this dropped and both Mariah and ODB single-handedly bridged the gap between gansta rap and pop with this.
Today it's common for rappers and pop singers to collab, but back in 1995 this was unheard of. Yes Mary J did this a few years back and even Janet Jackson and Heavy D collab'ed in Alright before that...but Mariah was the #1 female artist during this time with a distinct pop/safe sound, and ODB/Wutang was on the COMPLETE other side of the music spectrum most Americans hated then.
So for them to do this to a mainstream audience was a risk that significantly paid off! I'd go as far to say in anything Mariah's done in her career, this remix left the most impact. This and "All I want for Christmas..."
Wu-Tang is the best!
NO, SHE DIDN'T RISK HER CAREER.

I remember when a lot of people were unhappy because MC changed her music style (i.e. including rappers in her songs, etc.). This song is historic because it is the start of the rap-pop collaboration format that is being used by nearly every singer today. She really was ahead of her time and doesn't get much credit for it. If people would just look past her diva personality, they would see what a brilliant person she is. Not only is she one of the greatest singers ever, she's an extremely talented songwriter and also producer.
Hah warning
M N technically tupac was going to popularize rap-pop collaborations before he died :( but still glad mariah did it

All these years I've just realised that ODB kidnapped a clown and strung him up to a lamp post

Some history for ya'll who don't know, or need to be reminded about why this song (and Mariah Carey) are so incredibly iconic:
Rappers and Pop stars? In 2016, such a notion doesn’t seemed too far-fetched, right? In fact it's the freakin' norm. But in 1995, this was damn near scandalous. When Mariah wanted to get Ol’ Dirty Bastard of the Wu-Tang Clan to feature on Fantasy, her label (Sony) and her husband at the time (Tommy Mottola, Sony Exec.), both gagged. But somehow they let it happen.
However, fans of R&B, hip-hop and the like were floored. Never before had the genre (hip-hop) been embraced in such a big way by a “pop star.” And that very September, Mariah Carey forever changed the face of “pop music.”
It’s true, she didn’t invent the rap/sung collaboration, but she definitely pioneered it and made it mainstream. She made it work and it was an undeniable hit. Fantasy was #1 everywhere, on every chart, and became the first song by a female artist to ever debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 where it spent 8 consecutive weeks.
So before there was Beyonce & Jay-Z, Rihanna & Drake, Taylor & Kendrick, Jlo & Pitbull or Katy & Juicy J, there was Mariah featuring O.D.B - You're welcome.
There is now a category at the Grammy Awards (the first of which Mariah should have won) for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration - You're welcome Grammys.
So pervasive is this style of music now that pop stars often release rapper-assisted singles (Rihanna) to increase their chances of a hit.
So next time you say or think that Mariah is trying to "stay relevant" by collaborating with rappers, just remember - she was first.
thank you for posting that. Viewer's opinions are one thing, but the facts are the truth. she did make this mainstream! Young people don't realize that just 15-20 years ago music was extremely genre divided and driven. Genre's are basically obsolete now. You can't classify a lot of artists anymore. I think it's fantastic! :)
yes....yes......let these bitches sitdown and know who they are dealing with. MC is the Queen!
Well Said! Sad now how people don't even know where stuff came from musically anymore. They just assume it was always that way
this comment should have more likes!!!
I love Mariah, and I'm not coming for you, but this isn't entirely the truth. It was Jody Watley who did it first, with a song called Friends. Even Chaka Khan did it, in 83 I believe. Mariah is most known for it, but she wasn't the first.

Well as sad as it is and as disgusting as the truth maybe, it could have something to do with her being mixed races, you got to remember that this was back in the 80s when she came out and when she was in the biggest spotlight, and in no way shape or form am I saying it is okay or understandable, I'm just saying this may be the reason why they did her the way they did her, racism is still alive and well in our country even in the year 2021 so 30 and 40 years ago, just think of how much worse it was! I witnessed it personally and I am a white person but always had Black and Hispanic friends, my city is racially diverse and actually pretty segregated but I always made friends with everyone regardless of color or racial background or neighborhood, and I've seen a whole lot of dirty shit go down even in the late 80s and early to mid-90s it was disgusting still the way they we're treating blacks and Hispanics and even Asians and Middle Eastern people, and definitely frowned upon white folks hanging out around or mixing in with them oh, I took quite a few ass whooping behind that and and proud to admit that I would happily go through every one of those ass-whooping again and then some! Mariah a pioneer of what? She was not the first. Do you know what pioneer means?
why does Mariah look so gracefully on a roller coaster...
Because she’s Mariah Carey
even tho it catapulted the trend "pop star ft. rapper", none of them popstars ever went as hardcore as featuring someone as odb
she didn't start it though . the rnb hip hop world had been doing this for like a whole decade before mariah's team got her in that game. it also took them a long time to pair her up with a rapper as she was marketed to white people and as white. people forget . I know this because I am biracial and I am the same type of " not quite white" . we notice people who look like us lol!
erm....Mary j feat biggie - real love?
They couldnt do it ... aint no father so his style, ODB one of a kind.
Amirul Islam but Mariah was a pop girl, Mary was always ghetto
Lechiffresix six "Mimi branched out when her career stagnated a little." Girl... she branched out when she was at her commercial peak doing basic ballads and pop songs. She was at the top and at her peak. She had no other reason to "branch out" unless she really wanted to (and she really did, she was as she is a huge hiphop/rnb fan). Her label was definitely against her branching out into rnb/hiphop, because she was doing so well selling millions of records with "white" music. Her best-selling albums were literally around the times you said her career "stagnated". She just happened to consciously finess her way into making this remix happen.

@@Lillean really long and complex, she was married to the head of the record label and they wanted her in boring clothes and not expressing herself basically. She loves hip-hop and r&b but they wouldnt let her properly go into it, they wanted her to stay singing ballads. This album (Daydream) was where she started to properly do what she wanted. When she separated from her husband (head of the record label) , she released one of the best R&B albums ever (Butterfly) and everyone was shook because of how she dressed, her hip-hop collabs and heavy r&b music. She was still on the record label so after they split and she could be herself, he tried to end her career for years. For much I love Mariah or MJ they didn't invent Rap/Pop/R&B collaborations...Chaka Khan did it with "I Feel For You" in 1984...younger generations don't know shit and make things up just because they're fans...Mariah took those collaborations to another level in the 90's though...truth must be said...
Other's may have experimented, however Mariah perfected it. Recognize who you're all speaking to.
@@ABC882011 In this case others experimented (1st) and therefore pioneered...Mariah didn't invent the wheel though...she only took it to the stratosphere...LOL
Pleease read this woman’s book. If you thought you loved her before, after reading the book the before love pales in comparison to the love, admiration, appreciation and soo much more you will feel for her. She is one hell of an inspiration, her being on this earth is no bloody accident. God knew exactly what he was doing when he made this woman. I’m humbled by her story.
I'm soon going to buy the audio version so I can hear her tell me her story. Been a lamb since 2005, and I for sure LOVE this woman. Don't quite know if I'm emotionally ready, she's a kindred spirit, big sister/mamma I never had, inspiration and hero I look up to. There's gonna be tears isn't there?
@@whitsfiryellnogobyye lists. Mariah's story is a true hero's journey. That woman is one hell of a role model. She believes in herself without a single shred of doubt. Wait until you read that book, your mouth will open and you will cry for Mariah and for yourself. After reading it, you become her. The Mariah in you will awaken.
Of all the members of Wu-Tang that she could’ve collabed with (nevermind that a Wu member was even considered considering the rugged style of rap they made🤯), she could’ve played it safe and chosen Method Man but she put ODB on the song. Ol’. Dirty. Bastard. And made a smash hit that lives forever. Goated🐐
Facts
Amen.
They knew each other before
ODB was the riskiest member of Wu-Tang that she could had worked with. There was a whole urban legend around ODB. ODB was the man who showed up in a limo to collect his food stamps.💀
@@brenniquahill9898 The story of him recording his part in this song is hilarious
The ill thing about this song is that ODB didn't even say that much he just dripped charisma all over it and it's still classic.
He is probably the only rapper to make rapping off beat a cool trend. RIP

Exactly that. His presence is all that was needed. The man had it all and I'm glad I was around to see it, I'm just gutted I never got to see him grow. R.I.P ODB
Mariah made history here. She started the singer-rapper feature trend. You go Mimi.
Not exactly true, it has been happening since 1979.
Well she popularised it then
enchantyy M You get what i'm sayng, that's why i called it a trend. I know that before this there were rap songs featuring singers and vice-versa, but the rap bridge on a pop song that almost all female pop singers do, became really popular after this.
She may not have been the first but she had the pull to bring the two genres together and accumulated the kind of interest not yet seen. Fans of pop music came from all races, rnb was predominantly appreciated by non whites, Mariah brought a lot of white fans over from pop and exposed them to music like Bone Thugs and Harmony, Old Dirty Bastard that they most likely would never have listened to. It doesn't mean shit today but it did back then, she was the one that made people sit up and take notice, that there was something awesome about blending those genres which has alot to do with why so many people do it now. She never gets enough credit for it but well her fans know and I'm sure she's happy with that.
Thiago Cecatti Braga Mimi in my language means "piss" just saying...
Rest in Power ODB for me this song Mariah’s best collab still🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

She honestly killed it with this remix, love her ❤
Mariah was not only a gifted singer and songwriter. But she makes art, and was not afraid of doing things that were not popular, but she made it popular afterwards.

Hell yeah son!!
This changed the Pop and Hip-Hop game in the 90s.
CassieJazz96
CassieJazz96 never
CassieJazz96 no this is Funk music and rap music not pop music =))
Tín Tín hunny, this song changed the game of pop music and rap music, that's why you are getting Pop Rap collaboration nowadays (Problem, Bang Bang, Havana, etc). Fantasy is originally a pop song. She did another remix and add a rap collab with ODB, that changed the music scenes with Pop Rap collabs.
CassieJazz96 you know hip hop music ghetto from the street and gangsta blood gang and crip gang 😂😂
As a teen in 95, and people saying I was a doppel of hers, this remix gave me such street cred with the guys😂Thanx Mimi!
The hip hop community during 90s, was so SHOCKED when she dropped this remix
Really? Why?
Because pop/rnb and hip hop together was not a thing. Hip hop was not really mainstream like it is today and if it was it was in it's own category. And back then rap was seen as gangsta and bad for kids.To do something like this back then was unheard of and could have ended up losing her, her career and fans.
@@lemonjuice4703 on point! 💯
@@sharoncohen318 she pioneered and paved the way for that to happen
She wasthe trendsetter. She fought hard with her label to get this out, that too as a remix on a 12" cd. She pioneered "hip pop"

One of my favorite remixes of all time
And my favourite :)))))
Sauce Obtainer ....my fave remix of all time.. it was all a dream.
NEVER FORGET.... mariah introduced pop + hip hop to the world... this has been a music staple ever since mimi proved its commercial viability! what an innovator and LEGEND!
+Zai Singson nice
yes of course💙
+Zai Singson No she didn't. Mariah was merely following the trend of R&B and hip hop being fused together that was already occuring. Although she may've been the most successful doesn't mean she was the first to introduce it.
i didnt say she invented it. i said she made it commercially viable and set the trend for the future duh
How could she make it commercially viable when it was already commercially viable. LOL I suggest you look at the billboard charts in 94 and 95 before Mariah changed up her style on the Daydream album. For example, TLC's hybrid of hip hop soul/R&B/pop second album "CrazySexyCool" was already one of the best selling albums a year prior to Daydream with two Number 1 singles. Quit falling victim to big man history or in this case big woman history and summarizing a trend of events that were already happening within R&B and Hip Hop to one single moment in time that you've arbitrarily given to Mariah.
This song is the reincarnation of the Golden time between hip hop and RnB ❤
ODB was really one of a kind, no one can touch his style, his flow his movements crazy! Rest easy

@@mytype1174 No she wasn’t, Janet, Michael, Whitney, Jody Watley, did this way before Mariah. And Michael is the king of pop, so please do the research before you believe the lie.
