OK so the notoriety prior didnt have a hand? The place where she's from doesn't have enough of a population to stream her music? Her music wasn't heard everywhere in NYC at a point? Her crossing over with other artists who are Hispanic or Latin didn't help? Her lending herself to other new artists instead of attacking them didn't spread her out?
You can say that about her predecessors who make every excuse for others outclassing them. Cardi actually did enough brand building before the music & actually knew how to reach places others didn't because she doesn't have a ridiculous ego. She also doesn't call herself a rapper in other people's songs then tries to act like she's a pop star aside from that.
This is part of the reason why I don't listen to the radio. I prefer to find music myself. How many people blow up organically, and genuinely? I don't know. That's why people need to support independent artists themselves. If we all for music ourselves, we can help people blow up from the grassroots. As fans, we're the only ones that can generate success for artists that's real. But most people don't want to take that level of initiative.
Man all them songs on the radio being worked... Me as a independent artist and a few other underground artist I know with a good fanbase have an extremely hard time getting played on Radio. The stations still ask for "payola" but they don't use that word. Instead they say things like "to advertise with us you need...". There are alot of artist out here who are doper than your favorite artist that this is happening to and you'll never hear them because they don't have the funds to play the game 💯
I've said it before and I'll say it again. These new artist ain't here because they got raw talent, they here because they make money. Yes payola does still exist just in different forms. Thats why there's so much shit music.
I disagree. If people weren't so lazy it would be impossible for trash music to survive. They only survive because people are lazy and would rather have music put Infront of their faces instead of putting the effort into finding good music that sounds good. That is the only reason payola works, because we support it. Back in the day your music had to be good or else it was getting thrown away, now it's like "🤷 this shit sucks but I guess there's nothing else to listen to."
Just to add to the video on Cardi B - I attended a networking event a while after B Yellow came out. An exec of a label explained that he's the one that was paid to place the song on national radio. He just said it plainly. This isnt much of a secret anymore
Isn't that a label executives job description though? They get paid to promote an artists music/placing an artists music, which is not the same as paying radio DJs for a song to be played.
@@ilikeyouabit2 Record company executives work in senior management at record labels, where they make high-level business and creative decisions concerning the company's strategy, vision, administration, and operations, as well as decisions about the careers of artists on the label's roster. Payola for radio is about to pale in comparison to the monopoly they’re currently building on these streaming platforms. Labels have stake in the DSPs aka ownership. That’s way more than they had over terrestrial radio. All of the major playlists are loaded with label artists, known and unknown (industry plants), while artists with many more plays and more popularity don’t get playlisted on said playlists. Labels are over those playlists. Look it up.
Payola is everywhere including in streaming sites. Universal did sign a deal for Drake with Spotify to put his music on a higher level like it's being demanded by everyone there. Radio will forever take payola. It's even more than Radio DJs it's the whole station if you were to follow the story well. A story I once heard of was when a South African music compiler from a big radio station(can't mention name) asked upcoming artists to pay up 30K to get their songs on high rotation for a month, if failed he removes songs of the stations playlists.
Payola has transcended music. I’ve heard that well known podcasts are taking fees so certain guests can promote themselves. Payola is rampant with World Star Hip Hop and Media Take Out.
The questions surrounding Cardi B’s success will end once she do touring. People buying tickets on your tour and selling out is the metric if the artist is really successful.

Great video! It's the exact same game with the rock music scene. Terrestrial radio, DSP's, buying onto tours, etc. In one form or another, it's all payola and unfortunately happens all of the time.
Payola still exists, but instead of giving the money to radio stations upfront, record companies are now legally buying ads on radio stations through surrogate companies. This is a standard practice now in the Radio industry, which is why it is now dead.

You should hate payola regardless if it’s someone you like that benefits. It’s labels manipulating the air waves rather than letting artists sink or swim on their own

It’s not as expensive to run an ad campaign and if an artist isn’t doing it they are just ignorant and no one is going to check them out. The Internet has made it an even playing field and if you expect an artist to blow up without any advertising you are just delusional. This is how any store is run this is how any business is operated. If you don’t look at your artists like businesses you aren’t gonna be able to live off of the craft. Now if you want to create music just to create music be my guest but if you want to make a living off of it you gotta play. Also at the end of the day the album sales aren’t what’s gonna make an artist money, It’s the tours and the merchandise ect. Spins and Streams and Plays and Album Sales aren’t enough.

@Cutelike Dolphins how would there be a link if she/he attended a networking event, likely in person.
Isn't that a label executives job description though? They get paid to promote an artists music/placing an artists music, which is not the same as paying radio DJs for a song to be played.

Cardis back is going to be against the wall after she releases her 3rd album and that contract with Atlantic is over. It’ll be no argument about the payola accusations because everything after that won’t be promoted heavily. She may never have a steady song in the top 10 again without tiktok, a music video, and award shows that count towards charting. God forbid the FCC opens an investigation. Same for Roddy, Dababy, and many more under Atlantic

Even if they are doing things behind the scenes to keep her relevant and charting, she still wouldn’t be making any real money because she doesn’t own anything and too many people have to be paid first.
Look it up.
I remember that Ebro was mad as hell when Bdot said they was being paid to play songs 😂
