  • Brigham Young University (BYU) football is steeped in a rich history that has left an indelible mark on college football. Since its inception in 1922, BYU football has evolved from a regional team into a nationally recognized program known for its innovation, legendary players, and sustained success. The program’s history is a testament to its resilience, adaptability, and commitment to excellence.
    LaVell Edwards Era
A significant turning point in BYU's football history came in 1972 with the hiring of LaVell Edwards as head coach. Edwards revolutionized college football with his innovative passing offense, transforming BYU into a powerhouse. Under his leadership, the Cougars won 257 games, claimed 20 conference championships, and captured the national championship in 1984. The 1984 season remains a pinnacle in BYU's history, highlighted by an undefeated record and a victory in the Holiday Bowl that secured their status as the nation's top team.
    Quarterback Legacy
BYU's football legacy is particularly distinguished by its production of elite quarterbacks. The program has been a cradle for quarterback talent, producing Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer and NFL stars such as Steve Young and Jim McMahon. Detmer’s tenure at BYU was marked by numerous NCAA records and a Heisman win in 1990. This tradition of exceptional quarterback play has continued to attract top talent, reinforcing BYU's reputation as a quarterback factory.
    Independence and National Presence
In 2011, BYU made a bold move to football independence, allowing the program to schedule a diverse array of opponents and increase its national visibility. This transition has provided BYU with the flexibility to compete against top-tier programs across the country, enhancing its reputation and broadening its fan base. The Cougars have embraced this challenge, consistently proving their mettle on a national stage.
    Community and Fan Support
BYU's historic success is also fueled by its passionate fan base, known as Cougar Nation. The unwavering support from this community creates an electric atmosphere at LaVell Edwards Stadium and on the road. This fervent fan support, combined with the program’s emphasis on academic and personal development, underscores the holistic approach that defines BYU football.
    Conclusion
In conclusion, BYU football's historic legacy is marked by innovative coaching, a tradition of producing elite quarterbacks, and a bold independent path that has elevated its national profile. The program’s storied history is a source of pride for the university and its fans, embodying a commitment to excellence both on and off the field.

In the Salt Lake City metro area, I've seen more WV logos than I would expect. I haven't figured out why, but you guys clearly have some love here. And we certainly have plenty of respect for you as well. Go Mountaineers!

Kansas fan here and I am glad BYU is in big 12 it’s long overdrive. BYU is a national brand and one of most well known brand behind Notre Dame and the only reason they are not in power 5 (p4 soon to be p3) for long time is because it’s religious private school.

Agreed. Too bad that it didn't happen without UT and OU leaving--I can only think that would have made an already-strong conference even stronger.

BYU, great new Big12 member. Excited to see what they can bring to the table this year. Every team in the conference needs to up their game. Good luck Cougs!

@@bastiat9049 True about the Final Four. They also never had someone heading for an NBA head coaching job choose instead to helm BYU either, nor the high-level recruits he's getting commitments from. Were you aware that the top-rated recruit in the country had committed to BYU after Kevin Young recruited him? Unfortunately, his academics were so poor that he couldn't be admitted--same thing happened to him before BYU at Arizona. He's been accepted by Arizona State. But it won't be a surprise if they get some of the very best recruits going forward either; the #1 recruit for next year has already visited BYU, and his parents in particular were reportedly very impressed.

Here's a Dixie Cup.....Go take a drug test...BYU has had ONE good team in the past 30 years!....I am a BYU grad and was there in 1987 and 1988 there have been only TWO teams in the past 36 years better than those two consecutive teams.

I love the Retzlaff propaganda... Jake has toned down his Retzlaff roll to 'razor thin' but 0-4 is 0-4... ARod wasn't serious at the end of last season and it showed in the OK and OKST games with Slovis who could have played... BYU needs to be better than 3 wins in a 9 game conference schedule or plan on digging out of the B12 cellar for a decade...

Such an ignorant post, you only make yourself look foolish.... BYU had 15 all Americans over a 30-year period including one Heisman and multiple Sammy Baugh and Davey O'Brien Award winners.... I'm an outsider and know these things so you got to be a pretty dim bulb to come on here and say otherwise.... probably one of those Utah people.

That's as poorly-researched a statement as I have seen in a while. In addition to what @aisaxonawiat6484 said, yes, they do have multiple Super Bowl winners in Jim McMahon and Steve Young. BYU is one of only FIVE schools that can say that--and it was decades before having the resources that come with power conference membership. The only thing that might hold them back going forward is coaching; Kalani Sitake is a great guy and terrific recruiter, but he's been painfully slow to make the right assistant coach choices. But he does have a good receivers coach--and Puka Nacua's shocking rookie NFL success is only helping to get great receivers--and the new DC is very good. OC is a question mark--how much of NFL quarterbacks Zach Wilson and Jaren Hall can be attributed to him? But we're putting running backs into the NFL and have very good ones in the stable, and we're hopeful with the new TE coach that we'll see that play elevated to traditionally strong levels as well. Offensive line coach--we're hoping Kalani got it right this time, because the previous choice ended very poorly for us.
