This was not a "stampede" but a "crowd crush".. Sending condolences to all affected.
Exactly, too many people shoulder to shoulder with no room to move. They all moved at the same time, all it took was one small thing and from the force of people pushing if one falls over it's like dominoes and next thing you know you have a bunch of people trapped under other people.
Truth!
You are right.
To see the footage of many young adults especially women being helpless and suffocating with the large crowd pressing against them is very tragic. It is horrible and I can say inhumane. There is no crowd control and what happened to them is devastating. I’ve had experience crowd crush before luckily never had a thought that I could die, I can’t help but to scream while being contracted inside a pile of people. Hoping it will end soon and we’ll find a vacant space. Luckily it was not that serious. But the density of the crowd on Itaewon was very dangerous. It’s very fatal, they could not raise their hands, you can see people squeezing each other, they move akin to waves but in-directional that causes more serious injuries to happen. No signs of exit since they are stuck, lead to suffocation and fractures of so many individuals especially women who are short in figure. You can’t survive the crowd squeezing you it’s more than being punched by an olympic winner. Many men who are well-sized still didn’t survive the crushed. This is a tragedy that is happening worldwide but still people have no protocols in preventing this disaster. We should learn from this Itaewon tragedy and take stampede and crowd crush seriously. May their precious soul rest in peace. My deepest sympathy to the bereaved loved ones. Until now, I still mourn for the loss of South Korea.
Pointless being sexist even on this accident. Many men died too, and people are more willing to help women more then men.

That alley isn’t just any alley, it’s an incredibly popular alley with tons of bars and restaurants crammed into that alley. A lot of witnesses aren’t describing that alley properly when asked about it.
M
You are thinking of Hamilton Alley. The crushing happened to the left of the hotel. There is one bar and an E Mart on the alley
I remember when my husband and I were in Santiago Chile during rush hour in the subway. When the car arrived it was packed but a local indicated just back in and push. We elected to leave and get a taxi. All we can do to safeguard ourselves is to recognize danger and leave. Sometimes people don’t even have that option.
Do they realize that when they call it “stampede”, they are blaming the crowd?
It was a CRUSH do to massive human traffic and lack of organization.
An alley that is 3.5 meters wide and 40 meters long, should not be both ways. It should not be even opened if they knew thousands of people would be walking around.
I had in crowd before, I started feel out breath and immediately moved away to some place with space in order to breath. Act fast when you feel uncomfortable. Quick the situation change for dangerous.
but when you are at the middle of a small street with concrete on both sides..like what happen in itaewon, even you want to run away and grasp some air, its impossible.. theres no more space to move..they are crushing to death...as the guy said nobody know whats going on.. they have no idea that they could die from suffocation...they are stuck at the alley..lucky for those who survive ...
This is the one of the most disturbing news. I feel so sad
I suggest that people should stop going in over crowded places,I experienced this when I went to the New Year's fire works in London 2011, it was so over crowded while people were running to catch underground trains, we don't have to walk on our own feet, the crowd was making us walk, since then onwards I never went to see the fireworks again
It breaks my heart to see such unnecessary deaths…Condolences to the families and friends. May their loved ones rest in heavenly peace.
I pray for the deceased and injured... Crowded places are my worst nightmare, hence why I will never attend a concert, a rally or anything of the sort.
It is the unruly behavior of the public that causes tragedy..not the police
Yes these are the murderous people who pushed & shoved forward causing this horrible tragedy.I hope Karma finds them & wreck havoc & pain in their miserable lives.
You are absolutely right. Great comment. People are always looking to blame others.
In a stampede, you get stepped on. In a crowd crush, bruises are the least of your worries coz your first and ultimate problem is how to breath. It is so tight that your lungs couldn't even have the ability to expand and take in air, add the heat coming from the bodies around you will make it even harder. You'd suffocate to death where you stand.😔
Truth.
It was a crowd crush/surge. Deepest condolences to the families & friends affected.
Basically there was a death churn within the alleyway. some were trying to walk upslope and others exiting at the bottom, this cause others to misleading think that there is still room for new crowds to enter. Someone should have just held a loudspeaker and instructed the people to go on direction which is forward to keep the fluidity going.
Hopefully, in the future, those narrow alleyways will be closed to foot traffic.
Sending my prayers to all families who lost their loved ones on this tragedy...🙏
This kind of situation is very common occurrence in Indian temples during auspicious days. I set a boundary to where concern for safety begins over being religious.

Of course if you're in the midst of the crowd, theres no way u can get out, what with that kind of squeezing and people around shoulder to shoulder and toe to toe, just pray you wont become a casualty. Theres no way we can predict bad things to happen but one can do something to ELIMINATE the danger by avoiding crowd like itaewon crowd during Halloween. People keep saying it was a crowd crush, not a stampede. I was in that mayhem also and one thing I did not see were rescuers using a sort of backwards bearhug to pop the ribcages free from internal organs like lungs. Hard to explain, but if your chest has been crushed, that is what is causing suffication. your ribs are squeezing your lungs. By putting each arm around the sides of the chest and squeezing, you will pop the ribs back into place. I pray for the souls of those who passed, and the recovery of the injured.

Halloween is not a busy night in Seoul. It is just in a Itaewon and maybe a few other areas. 99.9% of Koreans had no idea of the gathering.
@@kapdolkim1914 well, the police had already predicted there will be a crowd of 100k and not a single one of them even thought to plan for crowd control. Literally level of incompetence after incompetence

that would be worse. the police should have shut down some of the exits to stop people from entering itaewon area uncontrollably.
organizer of the town is definitely at fault too and with no crowd control like town polices, chaos will definitely happened!
There is no organizer. It's just the neighborhood to be at for Halloween....people go to all the different bars, restaurants, and clubs. It's like everyone going to Times Square for the NYE Countdown.... it's just the happening place for that event. Although for NYC it's still organized by the City. Halloween is not even a holiday in Korea..... Americans stationed there or Americans working there started celebrating it and the trend clicked with the local youngsters. That is why it is in Itaewon, which is by the US Army Base and catered to Americans for a long time.... though now it's just another trendy part of town
A country like South Korea could have prevented this, so sad that this happened to young souls with future ahead
There was no stampede of people - they couldnt stampede anywhere or run. You can see from the footage they were just trying to get from one place to another, and slow moving. Thats not a stampede. Before you report further on this topic: You and people like you need to better understand the PHYSICS of fluids, such as grains of sand or pellets, etc, when in motion. Otherwise, your reporting does no good. There is PHYSICS behind the crush in Korea. And, this does not involve psychology. No doubt, sensors could be employed to predict when a crowd of people is approaching the point of a deadly crush. I am sure Ravel has not researched this issue. He does not strike me as a curious reporter.
Before you comment any further on this topic: You and people like you need to better understand the PHYSIOLOGY of the human body and compressive or restrictive asphyxia due to external pressures. You do not strike me as a curious commenter.
See? Get it? There are a lot of subjects to deal with in this case, there are multiple reasons and failings in a chain of events. The psychology of human behavior, controls, laws, regulations, transportation schedules, disaster plan and emergency response, training, besides the physics of fluid dynamics, which of course is an invaluable tool for predicting traffic flow, speed, bottlenecks, safe capacities, and routing.
