The ear-cutting scene is one of the worst in my opinion, just because it demonstrates so well how fucked up Kilgrave really is. He forces her to do that to herself, then takes pity and reassures her that he'll "always be here" as if it's some kind of blessing.
His entire relationship with Jessica parallels real-life domestic abuse so realistically.
😕 Wow.
+Scrummy64 Wait...do you mean one of the *best* scenes, then? Kilgrave is supposed to be fucked up. The 'relationship' he imposed on Jessica is supposed to be fucked up. That scene was a brilliant illustration of just how fundamentally disturbed he is.
+electricbayonet2 Oh absolutely; I meant "worst" meaning how frightening it is to watch.
It's a perfect allegory to abusive relationships. How often does the abuser hit their partner, then apologize, comfort them, etc.?
Scrummy64
Kilgrave: "Tell me something that I don't know."
Hogarth: "The platypus is the only known mammal to lay eggs."
Kilgrave: ...
Actually echidnas lay eggs as well
Lol fucking brilliant.
not true, there are other egg-laying mammals.
For a second, I forgot that wasn't the actual line
Platypuses are part of a group of mammals that lay eggs called mesotremes. As are Echidnas.
Interesting character...he was horrifying, cruel, and psychopathic, yet he did such a great job explaining his perspective and just passively going about his business that he ended up being weirdly charismatic.
Best marvel villain
Not a psychopath. More of a sociopath.
Both, actually.
Only possible thanks to a great portrayal by David Tennant :)
TheSinglePlayer e
"Cross that street, face that fence, and stay there forever" His funniest command lmao
What about that time he asked women to say "You have balls"
MrGNugget "grab that coffee, throw it at your face."
Average Joe "AAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!"
if you check the rest of the scenes youll see everyone else in the background faces the wall too lmao
"Say hi, Hank"
David Tennant:
Brown suit: good
Purple suit: bad
Blue suit: Good
Сука Лазанья and brown coat, with red shoes: PERFECT!
Black suit: Something in the middle
Black jacket and sunglasses: just don’t touch his angel
@d Nah, he's just a mildly incompetent and apathetic demon who's got it bad for a somewhat bumbling and repressed angel.
I love Luke in the car with Kilgrave. Even though Luke is literally being mind controlled, he has all the power in the scene, tearing down Kilgrave with nothing but the truth.
They don't call him Power Man for nothin.
The genuine man needs no armour
@@anthonywayne1928 NICE
This is a phenomenal comment.
The creepiest thing about kilgrave (other than the numerous other creepy things about kilgrave) is the fact that there aren't any effects to indicate that his powers worked. They just immediately get a pained expression on their face and do what he says. It's so uncomfortable to watch but you just can't look away from it. The victims act it out so well. The people who witness something like that must be terrified.
Did anyone else tense up like crazy when Kilgrave told his father to put his hand in the blender? I was actually prepared to turn my tv off when that happened.
Yeah actually.
Yeah, and it wasn't one of those "Oh there's no way he's gonna do it" moments because we've already seen him do some equally horrible things.
+Dylan McChald that's how you know a show is doing it right
Yeah I almost turned it off and I killed a guy's mum with my hand
I put my hand over the screen lol
"Are you doing everything that you possibly can?"
"Yes."
"...Shit."
I wonder if he did?
i wonder that too
“Cross the street face that fence and stay there forever” 😂
Yes he did. He can't lie to killgrave when he commands him to tell him something.
Avatarbee they mean they wonder if he pooped lmao
his psychology is so strangely fascinating. how can a person be THAT entitled and THAT apathetic about other people's well being and yet...seem to still see them as people? and the casual way that he gives commands almost makes it seem like he doesn't realize his words have supernatural power and instead believes that people should just automatically follow his will without being told.
Because he got the powers at a young age. if every had always done everything you ever said for your entire life, that's just the the way the world works. You don't have any frame of reference, so you will pretty much always become self absorbed and selfish, because other people won't seem like real people, they'll just be 'things' that do whatever you tell them to do.
I'm torn I know that they couldn't give him a redemption arc, but it's obvious from his reaction to the mother thanking him for saving her life from her own free will, and from his (I admit unhealthy) obsession with Jessica, the one person that can resist him, that he felt the pull to normal, genuine, relationships.
Yeah that was temarkable, both the writing and the acting. I'm sure David thought him through well.
Stuff like narcissistic personality disorder, megalomania and other sorts of wonderful things?
@@TheRoleplayer40k That's why he was obssesed with Jessica and told her he only cared about her and the rest were fungible... Because she wasn't a thing anymore, she got away from him, so she was a person for him. The only one in the world apart from himself.
This perfect ratio of charisma and insanity in a villain deserves the big screen.
I’d pay good money for a Kilgrave movie.
Some times I didn't realise that he was giving orders. That makes him more scarier and unpredictable
*He* doesn't always realize when he's giving orders. He had that line that was played as a joke, with the "Hi, Hank," followed by "sometimes I slip." But it really highlights that for someone whose power is will control, he doesn't really have control over it.
I think it depends on whether the person perceives it as a command! When he asks Jeri a question that she thinks is rhetorical, she doesn’t answer until he tells her to, but he asks Luke a question that could be perceived as rhetorical and Luke answers despite it not being a direct command
In Infinity war part 2, I would like to see a moment where Kilgrave approaches Thanos and says "You're going to give me the Infinity gauntlet and return to your shitty planet" :p
Shounak Das That would be a brilliant return for the character, as the Avengers and Defenders lay defeated and Thanos's victory looks certain, Kilgrave steps into shot
"Give me that gauntlet. Now get back into your spaceship and set course for the sun."
KilGrave is dead, he didnt make it pass Civil War. lol
He has faked death... In comics he also had a healing factor.. but still don't know if he will return or not...
you know that thanos has mental defences against that mind control shit right? Thanos would literally step on him.
I know... It was just a joke
I know he’s a monster, but I find him utterly hilarious.
The blender scene was probably one of the worst in my opinion, because his father was completely aware of what he was doing, and horrified at his actions and at his own body refusing his orders.
Worst as in bad or Worst as in scary
@@metaldectectingus2129scary
The funny thing is that after Luke says "No you screwed that up yourself" Kilgrave has no comeback to it and just says "I'm going to have to think of a fitting response to that."
And then he told him to burn down his bar
Now that I watch a compliation of these scenes i realize that Luke was resisting Kilgrave's control. He'd delay or grit his teeth when Kilgrave would tell him to do something. Everyone else just snapped.
Matt S. Luke talked to jessica about how he doesnt want to get near kilgrave again cus of his mindcontrol, so what u said is wrong
It's like a bacteria or virus in the air that makes you obey Kilgrave so presumably any super with a better immune system than a normal person has a better chance of resisting. It might be why Jessica developed immunity, or maybe its just because Kilgrave never kept anyone around so long.
@Oh yeah yeah Why? His ears work just fine
@Oh yeah yeah I doubt he'd be able to resist them any better than anyone else, even though he might be able to smell them. It's just his senses that are better, not his resistance.
@@marwan0320 Actually he's right. If your willpower is strong enough you can resist. In fact Dr. Doom is just inmune to his power, Wilson Fisk, after just hearing about him had the glands that Purple Man manipulate to control people, removed, and Daredevil played like he was under control then beat the dog shit out of him 🤣😂😹
I wonder what would happen if Kilgrave ordered someone to not obey his orders, would they disobey that order but that means they followed the order which is disobeying his order to disobey his orders... my head hurts!
Better idea; if he tells someone to stand somewhere forever, but his mind control lasts 12 hours, how long would they stand there?
+Jim John It's not that complicated tbh. If he tells them to not obey his orders then this is technically an order which they have to obey.
+Sy A but in obeying his order, he is disobeying the order to not obey his orders. He can't win
GuitarPicky You just said it yourself. He will disobey the order so nothing will happen since they both cancel out. lol
Nigerian Prince he literally explained it a few seconds later
I realized that kilgrave never canceled the eating phone command so if their phone rang before the time limit for his command to wear off they still eat their phone
he did cancel it, all of that was a realy hilarious joke remember, no one would take that command seriously
Imagine the irony if a powerful entity used a spell on Kilgrave that made him obey his own commands - and then Kilgrave's own phone rang first...
Ha Ns lol i'd be interested if he ate his own phone
I like how Luke Cage can give him shit even when he's in a trance.
For some reason, even though Luke is clearly being mind controlled, it looks like he visibly resists more than "ordinary", non-meta humans. I don't know if it is my imagination or the actor doing a great job, it looks like he is trying to block out Killgrave but failing.
I love that Kilgrave is just a regular guy with powers who just does whatever he wants without any super plan.
you will make more of these
shut up
4:16 "Stop! who the hell are you?" LMAO KILGRAVE IS LITERALLY ME
I mean I hope you’re not a serial rapist

"FOR CHRIST SAKE GO!"
"Where?"
"TO A DOCTOR OBVIOUSLY, SOMEBODY YOU TRUST"
*doesn't move*
There's a Doctor who reference somewhere in there
She had to think of someone first.
@@rtozier2011 Nah he’s talking about the doctor
@@antoniodee7245 The OP seemed to be critiquing the way Jeri doesn't immediately comply with the command. I was saying that she can't fulfil the command until she thinks of somebody she can trust.
Kilgrave sparing Jessica’s ears upon realizing he couldn’t control her if she couldn’t hear her was brilliant.
I never realized that before!
Lol no. You absolutely can hear with just the ear hole. The rest of the ear is only for amplification. Cutting your ear does not make you deaf 😑
@kaisawatson True. Only way to deafen yourself is to rupture your ear drum.
"i didn't kill your silly wife" hahahahhahaa
Every actor does such a great job of looking both confused and obedient.
One of my fav mind control sequences. "Cross the street.. face that fence.. and stay there forever!" @5:45 lol
It's a loophole, considering how his commands last only 12 hours. I wonder if he would stay there forever...
+Staple Mage he was showed still standing at the same place a few episodes later
+Anas khan Odd.
Staple Mage Jessica doesn't know he's there so he probably stayed there until he died
That's not true. All Kilgrave's commands become ineffective when he's dead. You can easily see that in the season finale.
God Killgrave is such a creative villain, He's intelligent, menacing, childish, powerful, The perfect recipe for an insane villain
Luke Cage was better in this show than he was in his own lol
That's because his show had to many woman character and writers Luke cage doesn't get enough screen time at all then they make him a woman heater thanks to woman writers. Think about it..... Jessica Jones Matt Murdock and the rest of them all get way more screen time the Luke Cage in his own TV show even in death Defenders he just less screen time.
Agreed how ironic lol.
@@Rubrick23. I think I'm having a stroke
Luke Cage was better in all three...JJ, The defenders and his own show lol
@Chidiebere Nwadike, no, it was extremely mediocre.
"What was I supposed to do, allow someone to expose me?"
"YES!!"
"OH SHUT UP!"
HAHAHA
Would've loved to have seen Kilgrave mess with Daredevil and the Punisher.
Me too that would be amazing. A lot of people would die though! 😂🤣
Killgrave: To the doctor, someone you trust.
10th doctor: I'm the doctor.
Killgrave: You! Mars! Future! Now!
10th doctor: Alright. *leave*
Bruh, Kilgrave makes Homelander look like a saint
Largely because Homelander is an imbecile
Imagine him mind controlling Tony at a fancy convention or something holy shit
Freddy Krueger Kinda happened in cartoon
Yep and he took over the world using Tony's tech to spread his mind controlling virus across the globe
Watch the show:
Avengers Earth's mightiest heroes
Episode: Emperor Stark
If I were Kilgrave I'd have my parents document all research involving my ability. Take it to Stark industries and control Tony into coming up with a permanent effect on the entire planet. Then lead the world into a golden age. The age of Doom.
Then I'd have Tony develop a way to use my power on any alien species and spread the empire throughout the galaxy.
*walk up to Tony* Kill captain America. *walk away*
He is one of the most interesting, evil and amazing characters. His love and obsession with Jessica is so.... I cant put it into words.
Am i the only one who feel sad when Kilgrave died ?
+Comsuon Daihiep Given that it's the Marvel universe we're dealing with, I expect he may not STAY dead.
Shadowkey392 i doubt that, in the comic he has some crazy powerful healing factor, but in this serie he have to find a doctor to help him replace his damaged kidney
+Comsuon Daihiep Since Kilgrave made his father develop a serum that would enhance his abilities, he might've developed the healing factor. The fact that Kilgrave needed medical attention in the beginning of the series would be a clever way to make people think he's permanently gone.
LeBlonc OH YEAH, I NEVER THOUGH OF THAT
Or did he?
in the comics Kikgrave has survived near death, and even survived massive explosions
he also has a healing factor
also he's a major part of Jessica so kill him so soon seems to extreme
I just wanted to hear him say, "Hello father" lol
"Cross the street, stare at that fence, and stay there forever" lmao every time
Curious thing about Kilgrave is how unambitious he is. All that power and all he does is party, sleep around and drift from place to place. He could be ruling a country, heck the world, with a few well placed orders. His life is so shallow and vapid, no wonder he latched onto Jessica as “real”
It's terrifying how casual he is with his powers. It's just an every day thing to him.
Would it be a shock if he tells a dead person to wake up and they actually did
Hed be the modern day Jesus
Dead people can't hear. You need to be able to hear to be controlled, right? Like he told Jessica to cut off her ear if she won't listen anyway.
Nope. Lol
0.19 David still hates guns
Doctor Who reference for you all
Damn I love his accent. "Get yo medical bag and fix me!" XD
(You know it's a fake accent, right?)
Laura Kay No I dont know. What I know is that David Tennant is British.
Yeah, he's Scottish, not English. :)
His powers seem inconsistent in potency. Sometimes people really hesitate, and sometimes he listens immediately
My theory is its down to interpretation
Like when he tells Jessica to "take care of her" that can mean multiple things and Jessica chose to kill instead of the alternative. So it could be a buffering for a command on how to complete the task
It depends on the person and the situation. The power makes you want to do what he's commanded, it doesn't just control your body. So sometimes, there will be a moment of internal conflict where you reconcile your sudden desire to do a thing with the knowledge that Kilgrave has made you want to do it.
It's a mind thing, not a body thing. You can try to resist it
Killgrave was honestly one of the deadliest villians in the MCU. It's honestly surprising he never tried to take control of one of the Avengers, especially since we saw in Age of Ultron they all were susceptible to mind control.
Look at his face at 9:38 UNREAL
That's actually a reference to his comic book name. Purple man. In that scene he turns like he always looks in the comics for a few seconds. Imagine him looking purple the entire series through!
Sven K I
worst case scenario. kilgrave and the Joker team up against batman. ............ Holy shit
+Devon Satchell Killgrave's power can be nullified with strong willpower and finding loopholes. Like when Killgrave told Patsy to put a bullet in her head, Jessica Jones got a loophole to it. Batman is more than intelligent enough to resist.
Even worse. Imagine Kilgrave controlling Joker.
It's been shown that people with extremely psychotic or sociopathic tendencies can resist some mind control. Pretty sure Joker fits in that category.
SMILEEEEE
Xehanort10 there's almost nothing the Joker wouldn't do anyway, Kilgraves mind control wouldn't do much
“Cross the street, face that fence and stay there forever” idk why I found this so funny but am creasin 😂😂😂
I laughed out loud when Kilgrave thought he was cooler then Obi Wan
Isn't the secret to beating killgrave just to stop yourself from hearing him? Like a deaf person wouldn't be affected right?
Yeah except that Kilgrave could command someone you love to kill themselves unless you listen to Kilgrave, or Kilgrave commands a thug to kill the deaf person.
No its not his commands its the virus that make them do this
Unless you can lip-read, if you understand the command you're compelled to do it.
Ik he is evil but I want this man to kiss me like that end scene so badly its insane. David is stunning I swear. They gotta stop making villains so hot
Right?!?
And then you learn David Tennant is a sweetheart in real life.
...and then you learn he's married with many children 😅
You know what Kilgrave could have done. It would have been risky, too public, but he could’ve just gone to the avengers headquarters and mind controlled them. That way he’d have a whole team of enhanced individuals that could have taken down Jessica. But of course Netflix couldn’t do that. Legal reasons, which can be a pain the ass
I would think Vision is immune, and is strong enough to beat everyone else except Wanda. Wanda could be a mixed bag because of her powers. Thor isn't human, either, and could possess a resistance to mind control similar to Loki due to his physiology. If Tony is in a suit at the time, Kilgrave's airborne powers might not even make it past the filters, but who knows. It's a lot of fun to think about.
But no doubt a single command from Kilgrave would put the Avengers out of commission for a good amount of time.
His face turned a little purple when he yelled STOPPPPP!!
Tennant is so damn good…also the scariest villain ever as he controls you completely.
8:22 I always laughs the way she says that throughout the show.
what would happen if killgrave give a command to someone that is under the influence of Hive???
inhumans logically speaking would not be affected
Don't have to ask anyone twice on the kissing part lmao 😂😂
This Character needs to be on Big screen. He has the Charisma😊
"Obi-Wan Kenobi?"
"But cooler."
I don't know Obi-Wan has always been pretty cool.
7:47 Jessica Jones announced for smash?
Lmao I’m not the only one who thought that 🤣
I like how is power is shown. He just casually talks to people and it works its interesting
9:37 - Is it me or does his skin take a slightly purple tint when he yells in this moment? Not sure if that was intentional at all or not but, if it was, nicely done Netflix.
I think it was intentional
He is called the "Purple Man" in the comics. The suit isn't there just for esthetic effects. It goes with the skin complexion.
Finally, Netflix made it possible for me to pause on shirtless David without my parents knowing it. :)
0:41 always makes me laugh 😂😂
The Purple Man was first, but Preacher did the voice control so much better in the comics. But when on TV, Killgrave was MUCH more like the comic Preacher than Preacher was.
Dude we could've easily had comic book version hawkeye take him out. (If you don't know, he's deaf in the comics that's why I said that).
What?! That's really interesting.
That'd be really crazy. He'd set up human shields like he does with Jessica.
Well remember that his mind control actually works like a virus that spreads in the air, it would still affect Hawkeye, plus when he told trish to put a bullet through her head she could swallow it, technically a loophole, so commands also depend on the subjectiveness of the person, Hawkeye can still read his lips, and I think it would still work on him
@@mimo__.- No because Moon Knight beat the shit out of Kilgrave because he had earplugs on.
Jessica jones season 1 was very good but I think they fucked up killing Kilgrave. He was the only reason the season was as good as it was. The actress that plays Jessica Jones cannot carry the show by herself. He character is pretty dull tbh.
He's not dead
+Percival was this confirmed?
+Stud03Muffin I agree with you completely. The air of mystery around him was amazing and when he was revealed and his mind controlling scenes were the reason i was even invested till the end. Here's hoping he healed and didnt die.
+Anas khan Thing is, he's WAY too powerful now to be brought back, unless of course the way he's brought back reduces him to his old power levels.
Dixie Normis he's not dead and it's confirmed he's not dead
Imagine if Hogarth could have replicated his power. It goes beyond her marriage, do you really think a person like her would have stopped there? What about her legal career. She's a talented lawyer, but she hates losing. Her reputation depends on winning and not taking losing cases. With Kilgrave's powers, she could have taken any case and turned it into a winner with even the jury questioning their own motives for acquittal mere hours after the trial, but noone could dispute the results. She'd probably become much worse after that, but she would never be able to resist using the power more and more until she might even be worse than Kilgrave since she's not the stunted child he was. She'd have a plan. Probably even go after Kingpin then the Avengers... all the while claiming to herself that she's doing "good". Don't like the Sacovia Accords,... how about the Hogarth Accords instead?
Am i the only one here who thinks kilgrave's death was unnecessary?
+Enzo Riou Exactly what could you do to stop him otherwise? Regular prison won't hold him; they'd have to build a special robot prison just for him so he can't get out, and even then it's risky unless they use other robots for cleaning and maintenance, and that just gets ridiculously expensive. And you have to catch him first to surgically remove his vocal cords.
Yes because his death was necessary.
Jeamus Plot development.
Enzo Riou I think it was necessary for Jessica's character arc and to give her closure/revenge
Jessica has barely had a character arc lol. She's basically the same cynical, moody alcoholic even by the end of S2. All that's really changed is that she's somewhat overcome her anger problems and become a little more strong stomached with gore. Also maybe nicer to some people.. But otherwise. She has barely changed. Killing Kilgrave (the best character on the show by lightyears), to 'develop' her character, was possibly the worst deal in the history of deals. Maybe ever. - To quote everyone's favourite American president
the stay there forever part is the funniest! lol
Evil with a capital *"E"*!
This was just genius casting for the Purple Man.
"Kiss me, like you mean it" i wish it would be that easy for me
I’d love to be kilgrave at school, just
Teacher: what is the answer to question 8?
Me: idk what is it?
Imagine a character with these powers if he used them for good. Heck, imagine a character with these powers who had a little more ambition and wasn’t just petty and cruel
I really was gutted when I found out that Disney when they brought Marvel wasn't going to make anymore Jessica Jones. They said the content was too violent, why couldn't they make a Disney/Marvel over 18 productions?? David tenant made a really good bad guy. I'm also a big fan of punisher i love that series.
Obi-Wan Kenobi
But cooler
WHAT!?!
5:25 cross the street face the fence and stay there forever 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
In another universe, he's a two hearted alien who uses a Blue Box to travel in space and time
Seeing Jessica wear that pretty yellow dress just feels so wrong
Killgrave is like the ultimate yandere
What I dont understand...
1) Put in ear plugs
2) Kill him
Why didn't Luke Cage, after hearing about Kilgrave and his powers, not use ear plugs? Clearly his power depends on his voice. He cant mind read either, so if it is someone he doesn't know, or who strikes from a blind spot, he'd be helpless.
if he was in the DC Universe I think Joker would be amazed by his gift and at the same time find it threatening
I think the Joker might find his power to be "no fun".
The Joker loves to be surprised and entertained. That's why he spends so much time going up against Batman, the most resourceful person of all.
Having said that... he would DEFINITELY like the idea of getting anyone he wanted to play along with his jokes.
Its interesting how characters act in response to kilgraves commands, it really shows the levels that the actors are on. Sometimes the actors wont follow the commands like theyve been mind controlled, but instead like theyve been thuroughly convinced to do something, such is the case with for example the neighbor or the kids that went into the closet which i mean (theyre kids) but when it comes to actors like krysten, colter or anne-moss who actually act like theyre being mind controlled, the way carrie anne moss chucked the pistol away and unlocked the door or how ritter acted in that scene with the ear, they felt like they were actually being mind controlled, idk everyone was great but some stood out as just on a whole other level, carrie anne moss especially
Technically, his power makes people *want* to do the thing he's commanded. So in general, they *would* act like they've been convinced, because that's how they perceive it. (There was that group therapy scene where the guy talked about how he *wanted* to leave his baby on the side of the road.) Those who seem to be resistant are more likely just trying to reconcile their sudden desire to obey with their intellectual knowledge that Kilgrave has made them obey.
Lol I was thinking this is not the Droid you looking for and then Jessica spoke about Obi-Wan 😂
Rewatching this makes me so mad they didn't go with the children of Kilgrave storyline from the comics. They explain with Hope's fetus that his children will inherit some of his Gene's, so potentially his powers. In the comics he has several kids from multiple women he's raped throughout the years who inherit his powers. The most noteworthy is his daughter Kara who becomes a hero named Persuasion. Imagine a season with Kara tracking down Jessica to learn about her father because she wants to learn about what she is. We see her genuinely try and use these powers for good. We see how hard it is to live everyday life without accidentally commanding someone and the tremendous potential for good with this power. Not to mention the great exploration of what it's like to be raised as a child of rape and maybe Kara accidentally commanded her mother to tell her the truth and it just came out......so much potential wasted 😔😡
David Tennant is outstanding.
So is killgrave considered a mutant?
+Imozart0341I Given how the MCU won't even use that term on the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, I doubt they'd classify Killgrave as one.
No in the comics he got his powers from a chemical when he was a spy and in the show he got it from a virus
and that
