Alberta Gold VS Cape Disappointment Beach Gold.

  • I had the opportunity to compare some raw beach sand from Cape D with the material we dig here in Alberta. I was surprised to see just how much black sand there was, but what was most interesting is the gold it's self was very similar to our local flour gold.
I hope this helps put into perspective the different types of conditions fine flour gold miners work with and demonstrates just how important specific fine gold recovery is in these areas.

It's not about the amount of black sands , it's about having capture zones being available as the material passes by.
Gold that small and so few is in no rush to beat the numerous black sands to the bottom
Perhaps a substantial length of slick plate would be a useful addition.
I found this a Very interesting tape - Thanks for not eating on camera.

No comparison at all. Be really neat to see if your utmost highbanker could handle full blown Cape Disappointment beach sand. Now that would be the Ultimate highbanker 😅

Both golds have been worked to this size (Flour). That would mean small and flat . Blacks sands by the look spherical in shape . Moving more volume along a 10 degree slope would take longer one would think . This brings to mind the gold cube and it's 15 degree slope which is used lots at cape disappointment with few to no riffles . Good comparison

I’m in Central America again at the moment. Beaches here are loaded with black sand. Unfortunately they are not loaded with gold. A pan of it weighs about 10 lbs. And it is so hot here my prospecting is just looking for fish, restaurants and shade. 😅

Lesser slave lake by widewater has lots of micro garnets in the beach sand, the bottom of the pan turns red when you pan it out with mabey 2 colors per pan.

The amount of magnetite in the beach gold varies from about 30% to a bit greater than 50%. We mine only the black sand and intentionally avoid the blonds. Think of zebra stripes of black and blond sands. Only some of the black sand has gold. I usually only mine when I get 20-40 (or greater) colors per pan (a couple pinches of sand). It is better to try to pan just a couple pinches of sand rather than a shovel full - You'll be panning for an hour to test. It's fun but takes a lot of work. If you find a good spot to work and are there for a week - you may find an ounce. State rules require some prep so study up and get the right paperwork.

A Miller table would be better than panning here for sure. Ideally, I'd put it through a small sluice and then finish on the miller table. But it was still good to be able to pan and compare, I think.

I find playing with sand to extract the gold very challenging. My best success has been covering my drop riffle highbanker bed with a cut piece of corrigated plastic, then covering it with wool fabric. You can feed it quite quickly, as the friction of the wool allows the blond and black sands to escape first, leaving the gold behind. After running two bucket of only NSR sand, the uper portion of the wool showed a hue of gold, changing to a hue of black and finally to a color purple showing the tiniest bits of garnets. Here's a short video (feel free to delete it if it goes against your policy) of that sand highbanking day. ua-cam.com/video/43KHLnsgoks/v-deo.html&ab_channel=John-Edmonton
