Federico Gaiti and Joshua Schiffman introduce their recent study exploring the epigenetic encoding of malignant cell states in diffuse gliomas. Their work encompasses multiomic single-cell profiling-integrating DNA methylation, transcriptome and genotype within the same cells-and develops a quantitative framework to measure cell state heritability and transition dynamics underlying cancer development and evolution.
