I'm watching the part about false steps, and as a track guy that's really similar to a problem a lot of sprinters have in their starts myself included) where you take that false step to push back into the blocks instead of being fully loaded like Bosa is. edit: lol just got to the part where you compared the back hand to a track start, everything is similar to a 3-point (or without blocks) start in track biomechanically
Thank you, Brett for another wonderful analysis. I love how you talk about the hard-to-notice details of technique (like Bosa's hip positioning) that make all the difference. Nick Bosa is my favorite current defensive player, so this was especially fun for me to watch. Happy holidays.
Yeah man, learning how defenses work is probably the hardest thing for a casual/newer fan of the NFL and Brett's breakdowns certainly help a lot. Super interesting, really. Also, as a Chiefs' fan I have a strange relationship with Bosas, lol, but man, they're fun to watch, even if most ot the time they wreck our OL.
Watching you compare his pass rush with another edge rusher reminded me of something Mike Golic said years ago about Reggie White. The D-Line coach asked Reggie to demonstrate one of his pass rush moves and explain it for the rest of the D-Line. Reggie showed the move, but couldn't describe it because he just did it. I wonder if Bosa is the same and that's just how he does it, or if he practiced not having that little hitch and getting off the ball faster.
As a Seahawks fan, I thank you on behalf of my blind side tackle for this valuable training film. It will be fun to watch the twice a year Bosa/Cross match up every year.

Yeah I remember playing against him back in high school. He played for st. Thomas aquinas and I played for nova which were in the same division. At the time he was a sophomore starting on varsity. I remember my coach saying “Nick is better than Joey” and at that time seemed crazy since Joey was already at Ohio state ( think he was a freshman or sophomore). Crazy how bad we got destroyed that game lol
Excellent breakdown! Just makes me give that much more credence to great players. Its truly a game primarily being waged in the mind and secondarily being fought physically.
I played DE/OLB for the duration of my time playing football (Cut short in college due to shoulder injury), the most underrated aspect of Bosa's game is his weight distribution & movement. Elite athlete, but a technically elite beast as well.
Excellent content and insights. This is really enhancing the football experience for me. I love the nomenclature for the different techniques. The "Howard Mudd" technique versus the angle set for the tackle. The double scissors, the foot position, and the efficiency of motion truly seem to make Bosa different. Seems like footwork is so important to every position. This is a higher level of knowledge about the game that I really appreciate. Thank you very much for your hard work in putting this together! Thumbs up'd and subscribed!
Thanks for doing this video. It's remarkable that Jimmy G's injury in 2018 basically allowed Nick Bosa to become a 49er. He's on a HOF trajectory, and at the end of the day might be the most recognized 49er to wear #97, which is saying something since Bryant Young was also a hell of a player.

I’m doubtful that you’ll ever read this but; there’s a couple things you’re missing here that you might appreciate my pointing out. One is that while you’re spending a green deal of time and attention on the minutiae of individual stance, steps, hip angles (this was particularly good, Ohio State’s DC did an entire clinic just on flipping the hips) etc. You’re missing some of the overall picture in terms of how Oline works, complimentary to the Qb drop & route concept not necessarily to specific defenders (they do but..). For example The Tackle Cross isn’t switching from quick jump sets to vertical sets randomly, he’s jump setting because it’s a quicks concept & can’t function if the DL has time to get hands up and disrupt a Qb quick drop/shallow trajectory pass. Aggressive jump sets occupy the hands I’ll leave it there..
Bosa has more muscle in his legs than I have in my entire body. And I'm pretty big dude. But God damn Bosa. Dude looks like he has comic book character legs
