When i was in my early teens, my grandmother(who had atleast 15 aloe plants on window sills around her house) gave me a pot of aloe.... being 12/13/14 at the time, i didnt take very good care of it. that thing died, came back, died, came back, died, came back atleast 10 times. Aloe is so resilient. I forgot about it and left it outside over a new jersey winter and come summer, it was back as if it never went through the frosts, snow and harsh weather. If you're a beginner aloe gardener, don't give up if it seemingly dies. A little tlc and it will ressurrect over and over.

Hi! The massive Aloe Vero leaf is something I cannot live without. It’s available at the Piggly Wiggly here in Foley, Alabama. What I do is slice across about two inches of the bottom each time I use it for the whole day. Put the big leaf away at room temperature. I slice off the edges of my two inch piece, and split it open .There’s a top and bottom so they fit back together, when you’re not using it throughout the day. I just smear the juices in my hands and spread it on my face and body...It feels great and drys in one minute ,to a soft silky feeling. The Aloe Vera can actually go right on your eyes and mouth...doesn’t hurt at all. No more oil of Olay for me. It’s good on burns...mosquito bites ,and scrapes too. It’s been around for thousands of years...Yea for Aloe Vera...completely natural...and cheap.

When younger I used to get the worst fever blisters. The side of my face would swell up and nothing helped. One day a co-worker brought me a leaf of Aloe Vera and told me to use the gel on my fever blister. I split the seam of the leaf and set it over my lip. It was so soothing. You can feel it draw the poison out. Ever since then I have always had an Aloe Vera plant and after that, I never got another fever blister. Let's put it this way, in forty years I can count them on one hand. One was from the sun. The gel is a GREAT drawing agent for horrible things like MRSA STAFF. God it was awful! There was a bump under my skin so I took the Aloe Vera leaf, gel side down, and secured the leaf with a gauze pad and hospital tape. In the middle of the night I woke up and dared look. This thing was fire engine red and looked like a mini volcano complete with open crater. I tried not to panic and immediately dressed it again. In the morning I dared look again and it was gone. Don't underestimate the medicinal value of the Aloe Vera.
An Aloe Vera plant will grow as big as the pot you have it in. It's a sun lover so an East window is the spot, but it will do good in any light. Don't think it's too cold. They grow in Russia. It likes to be broken for the medicinal gel I think because it knows it's healing.
This is such an important and beneficial plant to have in the home. Thank you for the video.

my family is from the caribbean, they moved to america just after my mom was born. I have the same aloe plant that used to belong to my great granny, still in its original pot and everything. it has traveled to 3 different islands, New york city, and 2 different cities in Florida. almost died multiple times (my mom has the worst luck with plants), and even got left at an old property my parents owned but hadnt been back to in half a decade. I stopped by one day in my early 20s happened to find the plant and asked if i could take it. I've never killed Aloe. My aloe grows like a weed. I have it in a massive pot (about a foot wide) but also don't fertilise and only water it if it hasn't rained in weeks. You need to ignore it and leave it and leave it in more of a shady area (so no direct sun or only a few short hours of sun a day) and I have those massive aloe leaves in my yard right now. I actually have to throw away most of my aloe twice a year because it grows so much! You need to change the pot for it - the pot you have is too small. Put it either in the ground or a massive pot and ignore it and it will keep growing. We only used the cheap potting mix with it and never fertilise it.

Hi Kevin. I'm brand new to your channel and was super happy to find another gardener that I could learn from in Ca. :) This is such a great video as I recently purchased a small aloe plant that was already needing a little bit of extra care. I had it looking healthier until our last rain. I'm in Vista, zone 10. Your video helped me realize that 1. I'm transferring it out of the same exact planter as yours and into a terra cotta planter and 2. Remove it from the East side of my home so it's not getting too much sun. I'm also using the same soil as yours. Now, I'm getting ready to watch your "Grow your own Ginger". Oh, you can make your own hand sanitizer. I used lavender and/or peppermint oil, rubbing alcohol and aloe vera gel. I bought my aloe vera plant for medicinal purposes.

Here in Sonora, about 2 kms from the Sea of Cortes, Aloe Vera grows like a weed and in no times it takes everything over, in spite of the relentless summer heat and sunshine that it has to endure. If I would have kept the numerous pups that I've gotten rid off on the property, I would have a huge aloe vera nursery by now!
This week, I'm going to remove the remaining three from the soil, and put them in individual pots. What I like most about them, is their flowers. The hummingbirds absolutely love them! 😊

Aloe is the one thing that absolutely grows like a weed for me. I think I've generally used some of my sandy soil from my yard. I put it in the biggest pot I can find and I don't worry about whether it's plastic or not. I put one aloe plant in a great big huge pot. My living room is very warm because of my heating system. My aloe generally sits in front of my south facing picture window, which is the hottest part of my living room. I water it generously, and since the soil is sandy and the pot is huge and deep, I don't worry about over watering. I keep a large "saucer" under the pot to catch any drainage. After a few weeks or months you see little tiny baby aloe plants poke up in the pot. Eventually the pot fills with aloe plants and you have to dump the whole thing over on it's side, separating the plants. You will find that there is very little soil left in the pot! You will have aloe plants for all your friends. I've thrown out plenty of aloe plants. In the last few months I neglected my aloe by not watering it for several months and was sure I'd killed it. I ended up sticking a plant in soil and surprise, surprise, several babies are coming up. I've since learned that you can actually cut an aloe leaf and stick it in dirt and it will root.

I almost killed my first Aloe Vera plant, several times. It was just a tiny little $3 plant I picked up at a local hardware store. I assumed they would be as stress free as anything else in my succulent collection, but I overwatered it until it got root rot. I caught that in time because I could see it just was not happy. Then I overcorrected and under-watered. Eventually I found the sweet spot which seems to be once a week if outdoors in the hot Oklahoma summers. Once a month inside over the dead of winter, and once every two weeks once I notice new growth taking off in the spring before it’s time to put them outside. I do always move succulents to terra cotta pots for the reasons you mentioned but I also like being able to see the moisture line of the soil on the outside of the pot. If it’s unseasonably overcast for 10 days, a plant isn’t going to utilize as much water, and you may need to amend its watering schedule. Having that visual reference can really help. I’ll also lift the pot sometimes to see how dry it is. After years, you just get “the feel” of it. My first plant is still going strong. The first pup/offset my mother plant produced is now about 20 inches tall with 16 leaves currently, the largest of which are 18 inches long. The mother plant is putting off three new pups currently. I’ve also learned they seem quite happy in arrangements with other aloe, alworthia, haworthia plants with similar light an water needs. Not only is it a visually stimulating contrast of colors and texture. The additional plants soaking up water seems to keep the pot from getting soggy. Great video. Thank you.

A small list of what you can do with it:
Eat it (countless things you can add it to, or, just eat it straight. ((Further fyi, aloe gel has detoxifying properties to it, similar to chia and other gel like plants/seeds)) Remove the skin though, the skin can be hard on the stomach. Oh, and soak in water for a while to remove some bitterness.)
Drink it (chop it up, add it to juice/blend in smoothies/shakes etc.)
Skin treatment (numerous ways to make hydrating creams with the stuff)
Hair treatment (Again, the gel like nature of aloe makes it fantastic at hydration. Blend it with oils and other ingredients. Excellent for damaged hair.
There's plenty else you can do, but I think that should be a good start. 🙂

My Filipino grandfather had 2 green thumbs. Anything he planted, inside and outside of the house, flourished. Aloe was one of the indoor plants. I am now living in that house, I'd love to have a garden and house full of plants again but I swear I'm the grim reaper to plants. I've been trying for YEARS to grow a garden, but have been unsuccessful. I gave up on indoor plants except for 2 aloe plants. They are alive but hardly thriving, they sit in a corner that gets East & South light all day. Yet the leaves grow horizontal instead of vertical or do some kind of curling thing. They are in cactus soil but I'll try transferring to clay pots. Thank you for posting, I watch a lot of your videos but have yet to be successful with my garden/plants. :\

Unless you are spending a whole day open mixing, And as a side note you are not very likely to find 100% alcohol, 98-99% is the highest you will get because anhydrous alcohol (100%) takes special storage to keep it water free. Think about what you said next time you are in a bar and asking for a "mixed" drink.

For example 2 oz. of alc 70% mixed with 2 oz of aloe jell/juice will give a mixture in the 30 to 35% range you can adjust that up or down by adjusting the amounts up and down and be close enough for most uses. it is basic math to work out a final product % thats within a % or two, mix it a little strong on alc to raise the alc % a tad and you will be fine.

I brought it inside with the grow light with the rest of my plants and its now turning a lovely vibrant green. Same with the 3 cuttings or pups I've got. They are all little babies and where almost like gray when I got them. May have been from my gma actually. But I put them with my first aloe and they are all turning deep healthy green. Well they turned beautiful green already. Haven't seen any growth yet in any of them just saw them get sick fast and then healthy slowly. I'm excited to see them grow I hope I can keep em healthy. Also I water from the bottom or with a sprayer honestly directly at the soil at the base of the plant. Here in a couple months I'm sure I'll find out if I'm doing it wrong. A lot of my plants take a while to start up growing when I first bring them home very young, then they start growing like crazy.

Unfortunately, I fussed too much and overwatered it, so it's gotten root rot... oh, 3 or 4 times LMAO. my gf told me it was beyond saving but all I did wass repot it into its old pot from the nursery and it's happy as a clam in our window. Might propagate it this summer!

Everybody here lets look after our environment together. I never bought periwinkle english ivy and wisteria I just prune some off by the roadside and voila I have lovely plants and they're all in pots. die in winter to come again.

Yep...killed my share of them. Today I am watching again to see if I've planted too deep. Thanks Kevin...love your video's. 🙂

Because I have dozens of allergies and sensitivities and I'm at that age (53) I need to slow down skin and hair aging I've neglected, I started mixing my own hair gel. Only, it turned out to be perfect as a moisturizing gel. I mix aloe gel with jojoba and argan oils. I didn't realized just how overpriced the aloe was, though, until I saw a huge leaf for sale in a local natural foods grocery. So I want to blend up my own gel and start growing my own aloe, as well. Probably will cut the gel cost by 80-90%.

After I first moved in with the guy I later married, around 1988/89, we picked up a little aloe plant for the apartment. The cats wouldn't leave it alone, so we put it on the back step. And forgot about it (because we never went out that door). 2 years later, it was HUGE, as it was apparently getting enough water from either passers-by or the dampness that side of the building suffered from (this was in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles). But it was OMG HUGE. When we moved, we let one of our neighbors keep it (they asked nicely), and once we have a place again, we're going to get another aloe plant (or two), so I can make bar soap with the gel :)
