IIRC this song was written about Thom's job at a mental hospital of some kind. The sound design definitely gives off abandoned (yet still full of patients) mental ward vibes
For years, Climbing Up The Walls was one of my least favourite songs from OK Computer. Then, recently, something clicked and it has been my current favourite song for a while. My favourite thing about this track is the soundscape that Jonny (I assume) has layered underneath it all. And I think the long outro is sensational (and really should not have been clipped in your video). I previously sent you a link to a clip with a version of Radiohead’s “The National Anthem” with the noises and sound effects only. Radiohead first caught my ear with OK Computer where the songs all seemed to be backed with incredible soundscapes. As they progressed to Kid A and beyond, this effect became even more pronounced. With this UA-cam clip, you will gain and insight into how these soundscapes are produced. I have pasted the link in again below. I really wish I could hear a version of Climbing Up The Walls with noises and sound effects only. I think that would be sensational. Anyway, thanks guys. ua-cam.com/video/T-ZVlcEmARg/v-deo.html
Love this one! For me this is paranoia descending into complete madness. One of my favourites from OK Computer but enhanced further by having No Suprises as the follow up track as the antidote. The line “Shut the eyes in the cupboard” could quite possibly be my favourite lyric. I’ll repeat my earlier suggestions of The Butcher or Staircase for next time, but as someone else has mentioned it… These are my Twisted Words.
Just found this channel, and I think it’s awesome to see a father and son bond over Radiohead. I think experiencing and reacting to Nude from In Rainbows would be an interesting episode (one of my favorites).
Skirting on the surface would be a great the smile song, it’s like if street spirit didn’t have severe depression A good Radiohead one from the king of limbs era is Staircase off the single “the daily mail/staircase” it’s a very very interesting track, hard to describe as is most stuff from that era
Man, it's hard thinking of one yall haven't done yet now! I think Videotapes is still out there? Would def appreciate a double feature and have him listen to the 2006 Bonaroo version of it as well!!
The mailbag question to Jakob was to choose one song that you would recommend to your friends if they wanted to know what Radiohead really sounds like and give a reason why you chose that song over the others.
Great song! I don't know if these questions have been asked for the mailbag, but to both of you: What's your favorite movie? Also, what's your favorite TV show?
For the next song, you could try These Are My Twisted Words. It's a decent contrast to Climbing Up the Walls, being the band's take on creating a spooky vibe while working on The King of Limbs. I'm not sure how well the massive intro will be received though. Perhaps it's best to consider it an instrumental track that just happens to have a few lyrics.
Climbing up the walls actually used to be my least favorite from OK computer - to the point where it would be the only song from the album I didnt add to my playlist. Its really grown on me quite a bit. Of course my long standing viewer request is Absolomb by Periphery, however,, if youre looking to stay within the radiohead-sphere, I would recommend you listen to "Unmade" by Thom Yorke. his live recording in the basement is beautiful but the studio version brings in some choir that adds a great touch. Have a great week!
my least favorite from OK Computer is Electioneering. The garagey sound of it feels a bit out of place with the rest of the album. The rest is truly perfect, including Climbing Up the Walls.
Hello!!! Ive been enjoying so much your radiohead reactions! If you are looking for a new contemporary band I recommend u Shortparis , they are great and Id love to hear your reaction to them
I wonder if those of us who had more exposure to 90s tv feel this differently? I feel like Xfile or the cartoonish 90s serial killer dramas connected a lot of the imagery dad talks about. Whereas now Radiohead sounds even more like "movie trailer music" to kids, because thom's vision and read of the future was actually predictive. Idk could be wrong.
Song for the next episode: all I need or nude. The questions for a mailbag episode are: Do any of you have experience in playing instruments or music education? How did Jacob agree to the podcast? What do you think about Russia? (a bit of a weird question, but I'm too curious not to ask)😅
*Mailbag question* To Jacob: Is there a band from the last 10+ years (whether you like them or not) who you see as having picked up the "art-rock" torch from Pink Floyd in the 70's and Radiohead in the 90's/2000's?
Being a fairly recent convert to RH I am not as familiar with the first three albums, they are my least favourite in there catalogue. I am in the UK and was a massive fan of Nirvana and heard of bit of Kurt in the screams at the end of this song. My question for the father would be what was your feelings on Nirvana and the angelic singer who broke so many hearts, mine included back in 94.
This is my third favourite song of all time
My honest opinion... The original is great. But the remix/remastered version is much better. Either way, great stuff.

I think that Climbing Up the Walls does that with most. When recording this video, I went on about that. Edited out due to dad rambling brain

Great song! Maybe Black Star, Morning Bell or Videotape next?
All great. So...Kid A or Amnesiac Morning Bell? Or both?
@@the15thfloor71 do both. He can compare the two versions, and see what one he likes better 👍

Favourite RH song, and yes they are they greatest band of all time

@@the15thfloor71 think how many British viewers you’ll lose if you say Big bang theory.
@@PresidentHotdog I haven't seen even 10 minutes of Big Bang Theory

Reminds me of Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima by Penderecki. More listenable though.

TKOL was a very creative time for them. Then it produced, possibly, their least popular (to the Fairweather fans) album.
One question for the mailbag: what are your favorite lyrics either from Radiohead or another band/artist?
Thanks. Added to the mailbag
Mailbag question; Before you guys discovered Radiohead and Imagine Dragons respectively, who would’ve been your go to bands in your youth?
That's a great question. We'll definitely address that

I think Climbing Up the Walls has trended that way for most of us. I go on about that in a portion of this video that I edited out.

Are you gonna do Harry patch in memory of.
So part of the reason this song PERSONALLY resonates with me is I see it as a representation of alcoholism. The lyrics are just perfectly fitting
