      Do you know where I can find a H.E. Leman .30 precussion cap rifle with an octagon barrel? Manufactured from 1842-45. Not a restoration an orginal. Any Ideas?

      Just make an AP core out of a tungsten carbide drill bit and fit it into the bullet!This is how you will get penetration!

      Define bullet. For instance, does tank ammo count, such as a 150mm HE? If not, then we could use maybe a 30mm rifle. Which does exist, by the way.

    I build catapults. I have one that has the same power as your cannon. I have been talking in groups about what a catapult impact would do to plate armor. We don't have the speed to shatter it like that, but I knew it would drive the armor right through a body.

    • @Papperlapappmaul

      It would probably be just as effective as modern AP rounds. You really just have to put a piece of hardened steel or tungsten in a projectile and you're good to go. Drill a hole in a 10 gauge slug, epoxy a piece of a drill shaft into it and you got yourself a very potent AP round.

      The big difference is that modern artillery use HE rounds. You REALLY don't want to get hit with a 37mm high explosive fragmentation round (though would certainly not be around to contest the issue). There are accounts from WW1 of bits of people in one dugout landing in the other side's trenches from the really big rounds (155mm and up)

    Marines use the 37 mm round during the battle of guadalcanal " But a Japanese counterattack was already in the making. Shortly after midnight on Aug. 19, 917 soldiers of Col. Kiyonao Ichiki’s 28th Infantry Regiment landed 22 miles east of Henderson Field and began the westward trek toward the mouth of the Lunga. Tipped-off that a Japanese force was approaching, the Marines were ready behind defensive positions just west of Henderson Field near the mouth of the Ilu River, which they nicknamed Alligator Creek. Two battalions of the 1st Marine Regiment were waiting when Col. Ichiki’s detachment reached their positions shortly after midnight on Aug. 21. The Japanese walked into a wall of fire at the sandbar near the mouth of the river, and that fire was produced by a pair of 37 mm anti-tank guns firing canister rounds."

      Fun fact (maybe): I'm no expert, but if I'm remembering correctly the Spartans actually used iron armor, plated in bronze for aesthetics. The golden age of Sparta was during the Iron Age, several hundred years after the Bronze Age.

    • @linkxsc
      @linkxsc 8 років тому

      Eeh thats a tough one, as during that era, you'd have had both bronze and iron in decent supply. Also it doesn't help that there are writings of people with iron armor and weapons, while at the same time we have bronze armor and weapons as artifacts from the era (iron didn't survive so well, rust and all).

      +Jalend Venn iron or aluminum? across the block? through the cylinders? the crank? oil pan? yes hiding behind the engine usually saves you. but an iron block cracks with enough force and speed .50 bmg obliterates almost everything.. 12k fpe, 2800fps.. yeah worry then, but rifle rated armor is heavy and most places on a patrol car get shredded by .308 and even some 5.56..

      Zyzor it would probably just go straight through, leaving a hole the width of the bullet, since it’s meant to penetrate very, very thick metal. The body armor is just maybe 5-10 mm thick.

      Some of the lower grain 22 is pretty quite. Even though wearing hearing protection is best, sometimes I have to not wear it just to make sure the round actually fired. I mean, the hammer is the only thing I sometimes hear while wearing protection
