Oak Savanna Project ― Native Grasses and Legumes to Plant in 2022

- I just got my shipment from Roundstone native seed today, and I'll show you what's in the box. This year I'll be planting:
Fowl Manna Grass
Splitbeard Bluestem
Buffalo Grass
Blue Grama
Purple Prairie Clover
White Prairie Clover
Three of the above were planted before, and the only one I am positive that is growing in the prairie is the purple prairie clover - and their is only one of them. I have no white prairie clover or blue grama planted in the prairies yet, and I'm unsure about whether the buffalo grass, splitbeard bluestem, or fowl manna grass that have been planted previously have survived. The fowl manna grass looked awesome for a while last year, but died back at the end of the year, and I'm not sure if it actually died or just died back for the year.
I'll also be planting a color variety of big bluestem and four bare root bur oak trees in addition to the normal annual ditch garden planting and a new version of the zinnia garden. Stay tuned, it should be a good year!

I have one more grass that I'll be planting this year - a colored variety of Big Bluestem called Blackhawks. Our land has a connection to Chief Blackhawk, so that will be a fitting grass for the prairie restoration. For those of you who are new here, I am restoring the degraded oak savanna on our land, which consists of widely spaced trees - mostly bur oaks - and prairie grasses and forbs growing underneath them. It's one of the most endangered habitats in the world, and we would like to see it continue here!
Here are some of the gardening and Oak Savanna restoration tool I use on Planet Mojo:

Those native grasses are beautiful.
Thanks Jim, I agree! And the animals really love them as well 😊
Bless your soul.
It will be real interesting to see these growing in the wild!
I'll be pointing them all out on walks through the prairie on my new path this summer. Stay tuned! 😊
Hi Mojo
It's going to be nice to see the multi grass coming up the oak Grove some beautiful seeds
Thanks Patty! I'll get my first leg of the trail through the prairie done this spring. It should be a beautiful walk through there! 😊
@@PlanetMojo I can't wait to see it
Hi Mojo nice video, be nice when you have another nice show of wild flowers, I noticed how expensive the grasses were.
Thanks Larry! I agree, it will be nice to see the wildflowers again, and this year not be in such a rush! Luckily with the grasses, I am nearly done with purchasing them. I can collect seed from the ones I planted in previous years to expand the prairie. From here-on-in I will be buying specimen grasses and finally start planting some native flowers in the prairie 😊🥀🌼🌻
I was looking at seeds & was like wow 😮 I’m sure I have some of growing at my place. I’m thinking about growing some beds to harvest seeds at this point
I harvest seed from all of the earlier planted grasses every year and broadcast them elsewhere on the land. It only takes a couple plants to get things started, but a few dozen or more will speed things up. What type of grasses do you think you have growing native?
@@PlanetMojo I had a lot of golden rod last year but it’s mostly rye with some oats brassicas now
I really like some of those and was surprised to see on those maps that they grow all the way down here. Maybe only one or two looked familiar to me though, so I may have been reading the map wrong. Anyway, I hope they do well for you this year. I remember your flower garden was lovely last year🐝🤗❤️
Thanks Deborah, you were reading it correctly. The eastern half of the US has the same or very similar grasses and a lot of the trees. They were mostly killed off by farming and grazing, but are making a comeback!
@@PlanetMojo Great! I have seen maybe two of those but not that type of clover. Those are really beautiful. I only have a yard that gets completely mowed each week, do you think it would be beneficial to put those kinds of seeds on it?
@@deborahdanhauer8525 I don't think so if it is mowed, but I'm not 100% sure. Some clovers have no problem being mowed, but taller ones like red clover do not. It would probably grow in a pot though 😊
@@PlanetMojo ok, that’s an idea… I’ll see if I can find some. Thanks🐝🤗❤️
It is interesting to find and plant native plants, but those are expensive!
Hi Alana, yes some are very expensive, but for those I generally only get a packet and collect seeds from the ones I have growing after that. It can cost quite a bit to restore a few acres all at once, but I'm doing it a bit slower 😊
How exciting, you're giving me spring fever. Has it been awhile since your last video or am I not receiving a notification from You Tube?
Hi Gail, I have spring fever myself! No, it has not been awhile since the last video - I post nearly every day. If you click on the notification bell next to the 'subscribe' button, it will have three options, make sure you select "All". You can check the channel page as well: ua-cam.com/users/PlanetMojoUSA Hope that helps 😊
Luckily you didn't need much of that fowl manna seed. Pretty spendy!
I agree. I may not have needed any, but better safe than sorry! I don't want to miss a year of planting.
And I thought bluegrass seed was expensive!
It is 😉 I bought some of that as well. A lot of the very expensive seed is very small like bluegrass - you don't need to buy that much to have a lot of seeds.
My bluestem is taking 2 years to establish
Most native grasses reach their prime in 3 to 5 years. Little bluestem looks better after two years, but will look amazing after three 😊
