It's not just smoked fish, that's great. In Latvia any smoked food is highly popular - meat, cheeses, etc. Traditionally smoked using Alder wood.

This is okay , but what happened to cold soup in summers ?, Carrot pies -Sklandrausi ! We alot filled pancakes also , Meat balls with potatoes , white sauce, loads of different salads , and Sorel soup ? Beetroot soup , Sauerkraut soup, fresh cabage soup , and my personal nighmare milk vegetable soup ? There is so much more.
We drink a lot herbal teas picked by hand in summer months! We make loads jams,pickles for winter,
Marinated beetroots , marinated tomatoes , cucumbers , my god list is long ...
Latgale has very interesting cousine for tourists to try ,
I dont know anyone who eats bread soup before meal !

Pelmeni never was a latvian traditional food. Cod fish has almost withdrawn from traditional food list due to restrictions of fishing lately . Lumpries are very popular , vist annual lumpries festival in Carnikava. If you want some real traditional food you must also try ''sklanda rauši'' tradiitional pastries with carrot topping , most popular in north-west part of Latvia - Kurzeme.
