Thank you :) I hope not to be annoying but I wanted share a thought with you. I watched your Marc Ribot lessons and tutorials. For me Ribot has been a recent discovery. I guess in my town in Italy nobody knows about him. I am so impressed by his playing style, because almost everyone in Italy tends to look only for the most precise and skillfully clean guitar players (van halen, steve vai, slash, satriani, santana, brian may and so on...). Maybe not all of my examples are fine but, I mean, nobody of them is quite as much raw and dirty and, at the same time, romantic and full of emotion like Ribot is. I know maybe it's not a fair comparison but to me Ribot is really something else. When I thought I had to be precise in order to be a good guitarist, Ribot's music told me that It's ok to be raw, and every nuance of every kind of sound that a guitar can produce, even unwillingly, can add value to the music. All this is just to say thank you for your videos, and for allowing me to learn more about Marc Ribot through your contents.
I saw the band live in 1989 or 1990 in Brisbane Australia, they opened with this song and Blixa Bargeld played the whole song with a single barre chord, sounded amazing, blixa is my ultimate guitar hero.
I looked it up, it was actually 1990 at the University of Queensland's refectory, and the support band was called Ye Dark Age, I was 18 years old, it blew my mind!
A year has passed but there's something about this video that kept me intrigued and rewatching. While I am appreciative of the music theory series that started around the same time, there hasn't been a video uploaded in the past year that captures the essence of what I looked for in my guitar playing. Might've been the excellent intro that in my opinion, hasn't been topped thus far or it's just me, being in a guitar playing slump this past year.
Excellent lesson as usual. You have inspired me so often regarding chords and scales, and your tone is always so right. Your musical knowledge helps unlock so much. Long may you continue Eric. Take care in this fucked up world.
Yay! That's what I love to hear! My goal with vids like this is twofold: Pay homage to a kickass song in my own way Show how fretboard knowledge is useful to achieve that goal
Such a great song. I know how I’m spending my weekend! Side note: I love seeing your subscriber count go up each time I click on a video. Keep at it Eric!
Great, I like it all: song, sound, tone, explanations, special mood, side walks (e.g. Em9 Pink Floyd). Had a lot of fun watching you having fun. One of the best places to go: Erics living room where he teaches new stuff arranged so well in his own style, because ...he can. So inspiring, thank you. And a record is coming, wow... keep us informed. Bluesy greetings from snowy Hannover, Germany.
Thanks Eyck! The new record is shaping up to be a vibey mix of Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Tom Petty, Neil Young, and Van Morrison. All layered over with Fleetwood Mac vocal stacks. I'm about halfway done now - we'll see how weird it gets a it develops!
Wow, I didn’t see this video until now (I guess it popped up because I just listened to it). Haugen, you and I share many musical interests. Let us celebrate with the gifting of that tele to me.
Besides a damn good guitarplayer, Eric is a superb teacher and a nice and funny guy! Keep on coming with you’re great lessons and inspiration! Greetings from Holland.
Awww shucks thanks Dany! At some point in my career, I switched my focus from being a super-badass player to being a direct and efficient teacher. I really want to become Mr. Miyagi/Yoda
Yeah! It's slow going, because I'm meticulous and have to fit in sessions between teaching and UA-cam creating. But it's shaping up to be an interesting mix of classic 70s songwriting (Neil Young, Tom Petty, Lou Reed) all layered up with Haugen jangly guitars and slidey bits. As each song develops I just let them get weirder and weirder :-)
Great lesson, Eric! Thanks very much. Merci beaucoup! I subscribed immediately. Any chance on more Nick Cave stuff? There are so few good tutorials on Cave. I'm a big Warren Ellis fan.

I’m for sure copping some of this and making it my own 🤣 always love your episodes, Eric! 🙌🏻
Dude, Ihad a fender mustang amp to practice on back in the day and the 59 bassman patch was the best and just heavenly sounding. I can only imagine how awesome the real deal would be. Cheers
This made very happy to hear news of an upcoming album 😍 I know this song but I’m very embarrassed to say I never looked up who wrote it. I was familiar with Cash’s cover of it on Solitary Man album. Homework for me: listen to Nick Cave!
Yay! My record's kinda sounding like if Tom Petty and Lou Reed got together and tripped hard on mushrooms ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ For Nick Cave, my favorite albums are "Let Love In," and "Live Seeds" - start there!
Wow, thanks for some more Nick! There are too few lessons out there, partly no doubt because a lot of his songs don't have straightforward guitar parts. (Speaking of which, I heard you plug Adrian at AnyoneCanPlayGuitar in your last lesson, so I will feel free to put in a plug for his beautiful guitar arrangement of Into My Arms that he posted a couple of months ago.)
Yeah I saw that! It's funny Adrian dropped that the same week I dropped "Up Jumped The Devil." We chat about doing a collab one of these days - gotta make that happen :-)
@@EricHaugenGuitar I knew you would know about it since Adrian's said that you guys talk, but for anyone else here who hasn't heard it, it's very worth checking out, really gorgeous. It kept reminding me of your arrangement of Lou's "Perfect Day" which I also loved.
Imagine a trio formed by Waits, Cave and Haugen, that would be something I'd pay to see!!! BTW, you've been trying out a lot of new ribbon mics and preamps, are you searching for something in particular? Awesome tone like always!
Sometimes I have dreams that I'm auditioning for Tom Waits. I remember one that involved standing in a lake of peanut shells :-) Re: mics - I LOVE ribbon mics for guitar so much. With digital recording, they do a great job of rounding off the top end and beefing up the greasy parts. The gear for this vid is my engineer buddy Thom's - he was at my place that day because after we made this vid we got to work on overdubs for my record!
