As chemist I just wanna day that silicone isn’t necessarily bad for hair. Silicone has two chains a water loving chain(hydrophilic) and oil loving chain (lipophillic) so that means the oil loving coats the hair but it washes off. Surfactants also aren bad the problem is after care after you wash you must replenish and seal moisture
Your comment about the silicone makes since others have said the shampoo really feels like its moisturizing while in but as soon as they rinse, its not!
surfactants are def a prob for many of us. Everyone's hair does not react the same way to being stripped and then "replenished". Also, if you have sensitive skin...very drying.
A cyclic silicone is basically a silicone that is in a common shape (such as a triangle, square, hexagon, etc.)Cyclic structures are very strong and do not break apart easily. Regular silicones are in lines meaning that they are straight chains of atoms attached to each other- these chains can be broken with little effort. I'm currently in Survey of Chemistry 2 (organic chemistry) in college right now so that's how I know a lil about this. Hope this helped!

TiMalice2009 20 dollars for a shampoo is expensive...25 dollars for a conditioner is expensive...WITH SILICONES?! Nah there’s so many better options that perform even better for half the price, with NO silicone
I really appreciate @PATTERN responding. So many people (with no knowledge of chemistry for raw materials as well as man made ones) give silicones such a bad name. Yes, your hair can thrive without them just as it can thrive WITH them. Same thing with sulfates, but to each their own. People also see alcohols but fail to realize that there are other ingredients that work with it for softening or moisturizing properties. As for price point, expect to pay even more if the company moves to completely natural/biodegradable ingredients. It's funny/sad that you have to pay out more for healthier things, lol! I happily purchased the products with no fear (the air we breathe is more problematic than her ingredients list 😂😭😔). I did leave that brush behind though... judging by the look on her face while using it, I'm glad I did 🤣

I will be trying these and don't mind the silicones. My hair has actually been better since I reintroduced them into my routine, no more rough splitting ends, the moisture stays in my hair for days without having to remoisturize and the slip for detangling is unmatched. Everyone's hair is different
I love your constructive review. The one thing I don’t get is why the Shampoo has silicones, Where a vast majority of really good shampoos Don’t. 🤷🏽♀️
Anyone feel free to correct me if I am mistaken. From what I understand silicones are an inexpensive way to add shine and slip to give the illusion that the hair is healthier right after using the product, so you see them in more prominent in products where you don't see things like coconut oil, olive oil, or shea. Any cheaper end hair care product that makes a claim to "instant" silky smoothness probably has a silicone in it. I suspect its more common in shampoo than we would expect. It is really just an instant gratification ingredient. Many people notice the difference in texture after a few silicone-free washes and it alarms them because their hair less shiny and smooth. So I suspect that product placement and focus groups indicate that the presence of silicone is favored by consumers.
SSNUTHIN great point! I think the natural hair community is somewhat obsessed with slip. I don't really need my shampoo to have a lot of slip, but some naturals want every product to have it. I agree that silicones give the appearance of shiny, moisturized hair, but if your hair is prone to buildup and you don't clarify your hair, you'll likely experience dryness over time.
I don't think I need to be that strict about ingredients. Especially if the silicones are water-soluble or in the last 5 ingredients. A nice low sulphate or sulphate free shampoo will get it out easily.
HiThereLindsey - I think it varies for folks, for most it’s probably not an issue but I find they build up in my hair especially easy and I’m not about the flaky life so I avoid silicones as much as possible
This mindset astounds me; Black women will spend $200-$800 or more on a weave, lace-front or other, on braided or extensions- BUT making sure the hair growing from your head receives the best product available using ingredients to promote health, shine, growth as well as making sure product are non-cancerous after prolonged use......... “I don’t think I need to be that strict about ingredients”............ I just can’t....will never understand this mindset.....😶😳
thank you someone with logic knows how to use silicones appropriately. these comments about it not being bad are so odd I saw someone say tresemme was a "good" brand lmao with all that liquid plastic and fake properties yeah right. like if you wouldnt melt ceram wrap onto your hair why would you buy something with that ingredient?
I'm 4a with fine hair and I like the Intensive condish best, though it's meant for 4c tighter textures (I bought the travel-size 3-pack conditioner set to try all 3). I'm also high porosity; silicones can help hi-po hair by forming a barrier over raised cuticles (I know you already know that) and some products with silicones work well on my hi-po hair (Nexxus Keraphix condish comes to mind). But I hope you get that meeting! 😉🙌🏾
I think the reason the Pattern brush wasn't working is because it's the same kind of brush as the Denman, and the Denman isn't a detangling brush, it's a curl defining brush. The Pattern bush has very stiff, rigid bristles, which should tell you immediately not to use it for detangling, you should always use a brush with flexible bristles to detangle hair.
Stylist Here: But sulfates are not something to avoid because u need to get rid of of that build up so I’d say we need to have a line with a clarifying sulfate shampoo just one ☝🏻 for all hair types...we need it so that we can cleanse and detoxify our hair and leave room for our following products to work.
Chris Barwo that’s what deep conditioners are for, I use sulfates because when my hair is completely stripped my deep conditioners work better. I really don’t know why people run away from using sulfates when you’re going to put the moisture back into the hair anyways with a conditioner
I have high porosity 3c/4a hair and wash weekly. I use non-sulfate for 3 weeks and sulfate at the end of the month to erase build-up and clarify.During a midwest winter this changes. My sister is normal porosity 4b/4c. She co- washes every 2 weeks( and then protective styles it), washes once a month with non- sulfates and washes every 8wks with a sulfate when she wants to clarify and straighten her hair. My bestie low porosity 3b/3c/4a washes every other day with non sulfates and clarifies with a sulfate every two weeks to a month depending on weather and personal activity. I think Bianca said it was near the bottom, so it was probably used to carry or break down another of the ingredients nearby on the list. If it was the first or second ingredient, then I would be concerned. HTH.
@@mearrafranklin8711 Just because something is deemed safe to use by the government (of all people) does not mean it is harmless, nor does it being a "organic compound" in chemistry the terms "organic" and "inorganic" take on a slightly different meaning. Also, just because a compound is organic does not make it physically safe for humans. I have had adverse reactions to the substances mentioned that you just referred to as safe, and harmless. Please tell that to my kidney and liver that responds negatively to both propylene glycol and caprylyl glycol
If you clarify or use a shampoo that has gentle cleansing sulfates, then you can use silicones with little to no problems. Sulfates are the only way to remove them.
When you said you were doing a review on these products and I found out about the silicones I was like 😳😳😳 is Bianca about to put silicones in her hair?! So glad you keep it real. Love the review, I hope Tracee sees this and takes what you said into consideration.
I will say that I hear what Bianca is saying regarding that the leave in conditioner may not classify as a styler. However, I actually used the leave in as my only styler (and I’m a girl who loves to throw 2-4 products in my hair at once for styling) and I was thoroughly impressed with the results. The leave in conditioner has a very light consistency that is buildable depending on how much hold and moisture you want. I think it would have been worth a shot to see how this product would have worked.
This is exactly why I decided not to purchase because I wish she would have added a styler. Can’t tell how good the products are if I’m washing it out and using another product.
As a tight, very tight curly, the products worked well in my hair, but only when wet, my curls pop. Sadly, az my hair dries, the curl definition is gone. I had to use my earth tones jelly to get the curl definition to stay. However the shampoo, intense conditioner, leave in with argannoil has left my hair so hydrated. Pattern Beauty will be doing a phase 2, which will focua more on styling gels etc.
Glamtwinz did a review on this line and they have very thick hair. Kelsey only used the conditioner as a styler and leave in and her turned out bomb. Kendra used the conditoner as a leave in and a gel only two products and her hair turned on bomb.
This is the reason why I have been following you since I stumbled over one of your videos about 3 years ago. If is not Bianca approved you don't buy it! ❤😝
A little bummed about the silicone. I was really looking forward to trying out these products. Hopefully they move towards silicone free products. Thanks for the HONEST review!
I wish natural hair channels (especially big ones like Bianca) would preach more about individuality in hair. That maybe for one natural silicones can be terrible, cause buildup, and all of that but for another it can be just what they need to get through a week with good hair (and they could have the same hair type and porosity). We’re all different and we’re all not gonna have the same hair. If you’ve gotten down this far just remember to do what’s best for your hair.💞💞 Take what these channels say with a grain of salt.
Cyclic silicones (or siloxanes) are frequently used as solvents for fragrance and essential oils, and also as carrier fluids for higher molecular weight silicones such as dimethicone and dimethiconol. This aids the formulator in preparing her final product because she can prepare her oil phase by combining cyclomethicone and the silicone and/or fragrance oil and add her emulsifier, prior to addition of the entire oil phase to the aqueous phase. Cyclomethicones are also favored by formulators because they spread easily on the hair and skin, and the lubrication they provide isn't greasy or tacky. Because of their low vapor pressure, they evaporate easily from hair or skin at room temperature, and therefore aren't prone to build-up or an oily residue. For this reason, they are sometimes used as an additive in products such as spray leave-in conditioners to help speed drying time. Another benefit of their low vapor pressure is that it provides a way for the desired ingredients to penetrate into the hair shaft or skin. The cyclic silicone is too large to penetrate the skin or hair itself, but is small enough to dissolve the beneficial ingredient, deposit it onto the hair surface, and then evaporate, leaving behind the beneficial ingredient. Cyclic silicones may appear on labels by several different names, such as: Cyclomethicone (can be a single cyclic silicone or a mixture of two or more) Cyclopentasiloxane Cyclotetrasiloxane Cyclohexasiloxane Octamethyl cyclotetrasiloxane Several curly-haired consumers on NaturallyCurly have reported very unfavorable results with products containing cyclopentasiloxane in particular. These problems were attributed to build-up on the surface or build up due to penetration of the smaller silicone into the hair shaft. However, this seems unlikely because of the chemical and physical properties of these molecules. I believe that evaporation of the cyclic silicones creates a ruffled hair cuticle that creates a rough, unpleasant texture on the hair surface in the same manner as evaporation of ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol. The mildly acidic pH of a shampoo and conditioner will help restore the sealed, flat surface of the cuticle, thereby improving the texture and gloss of the hair. From www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/curl-products/curlchemist-cyclomethicones-a-different-category-of-silicones PATTERN now has stylers

I avoid products that contain that drying alcohol because they really dry out my curls and make them tangled. Maui Moisture is the one brand I stay away from, I can’t use anything from that line because they all dry out my hair
Amazing review! My dad told me that she had created a product line because he thought I may be interested and now I am less based on the silicone situation! Your reviews rock Bianca! Thanks for the honesty!!
I can share my experience with Pattern beauty . I bought the intensive conditioner for tight coils , leave in and jojoba serum. My hair is fine and low porosity. The products gave me no moisture and left particles in my hair meaning it did not absorb. The only thing I liked is the jojoba hair serum. I don’t think the products are gear for low porosity fine hair girls like me. Will be using it with my henna gloss so I can make sure I wash it out completely from my hair.
She did say that there are good and bad silicones, she just prefers NO silicones. I'm not that picky. As long as it doesn't cost too much, dry my hair out and doesn't leave buildup I'm down. I do check for animal testing though.
I compare a new product launch to the first model of an automobile. I never buy a car in its first model year, I wait until the kinks have been worked out in subsequent model years of the car. I'll wait to see if Pattern Beauty reformulates these products. Other brands deliver great slip and moisture without the use of silicones. I'm kinda surprised that these ingredients are being used in products with this price point.
Bianca I felt just like you when I saw the Ingredients! I love Tracee and I was super excited that she created a natural hair line! I’m keeping watch on this in case she changes the formula or creates a new product. Thank you Bianca for your honesty always. I appreciate you more than you know!

In my opinion silicons work differently for any hair type. Yes we should use silicon free stuff but a little bit doesn’t do too much harm. You just have to see what it does for your hair in my opinion.
I'm no expert, however in my experience for example, I was in love with a certain product vyears ago. I won't give the name. Anyway my hair would feel so soft and manageable. So much slip it was amazing. But after months of uding that product I started noticing my hair started getting dry and there was so much shedding. I was young and didn't know any better. High School days. Once I started working, I started going to the hair dresser regularly. She is the one that figured out it was the shampoo that I was using. She taught me about silicones costing the hair strands and not allowing any moisture in. This in turn caused the hair to dry out. So I'm guessing that if you are the person that shampoos their hair every other day, water soluble silicones may not be too bad. However if you are the person that shampoos their hair every week or every other week, that's when silicones do the damage. So it just depends on the person and their routine. With that being said, maybe Pattern will come out with a line that is strictly Sulfate, Paraben and Silicone Free for those of us that may have an issue with those particular ingredients. They have nothing to lose. Just taps into another customer base.
We talk about silicones, sulfates, parabens, etc..BUT have NO problems coloring hair. Now let's talk about those chemicals and the damage it's doing it.
@@lethalmaxim I will, because my energy is honest. I'm natural, but just as some knock certain products due to a silicone they turn a blind eye to the much worse chemicals that they put in their hair. My hair looked better when I used products with silicones. I’ll probably be going back to using some products with silicones since I live in the Northeast and humidity in the summertime is brutal. CGM is much too restrictive for me. Cruelty-Free is very important and no sulfates, and nontoxic chemical ingredients. I don’t think using silicones is so horrible sometimes.
A lot of people in the comment section are so over the top. They act as if silicones and sulfates are poisonous. Silicones seal in moisture and sulfates clarify the hair. And if you use them sparingly, your hair will be just fine.
Pattern said that they didn't use cyclic silicones, which is important because cyclic silicones are the kind that *DO* build up on your hair. The silicones used by Pattern, are volatile silicones, which *DON'T* build up. I wish you had looked that up instead of just saying that nobody would know the difference. If no one knows the difference, why don't you educate us, instead of just telling us that it's bad?

It doesnt help they are losing orders either. You have silicones and we are losing orders???
So.....Tracee may not care about silicones like the rest of us...
You should have your own brand of curly hair, will be perfect 😍

TiMalice2009 so true!
facts!!!! SHe knows her stuff and I am sure we would all be eager to give you our money!
YEAH !!
Remove the silicones Tracee, we freaking adore you!♡♡♡
I greatly appreciate your honesty! So many people do things just to please others but I'm thankful you look out for your following base. Love you Bianca!
I will be trying these and don't mind the silicones. My hair has actually been better since I reintroduced them into my routine, no more rough splitting ends, the moisture stays in my hair for days without having to remoisturize and the slip for detangling is unmatched. Everyone's hair is different
That neck role tho 😂
“I don’t want AAAAANYYYY silicone in my products.”
E
I love how even though you don't love all the ingredients in the products you're still sending nothing but love and positivity
Thank you! That’s exactly what I was going for 🥰❤️
I love your constructive review.
It's possible that they wanted the shampoo to have slip to help avoid breakage
SSNUTHIN great point! I think the natural hair community is somewhat obsessed with slip. I don't really need my shampoo to have a lot of slip, but some naturals want every product to have it. I agree that silicones give the appearance of shiny, moisturized hair, but if your hair is prone to buildup and you don't clarify your hair, you'll likely experience dryness over time.
It takes a lot of guts to be this bold when you know you really would love to work with a company like this! Ok then girl! 👏🏾♥️
Thank you for your honesty! A lot of people have been jumping on the bandwagon because we love Tracee, but these ingredients AINT IT!
This products is very expensive to not have the ingredients on point.
thank you someone with logic knows how to use silicones appropriately. these comments about it not being bad are so odd I saw someone say tresemme was a "good" brand lmao with all that liquid plastic and fake properties yeah right.
like if you wouldnt melt ceram wrap onto your hair why would you buy something with that ingredient?
You got it right.
Stylist Here:
But sulfates are not something to avoid because u need to get rid of of that build up so I’d say we need to have a line with a clarifying sulfate shampoo just one ☝🏻 for all hair types...we need it so that we can cleanse and detoxify our hair and leave room for our following products to work.
Yeah but sulfate is too rough on natural hair and can make it break off. Our hair is sensitive so it can get cleaned just fine without sulfate.
Chris Barwo that’s what deep conditioners are for, I use sulfates because when my hair is completely stripped my deep conditioners work better. I really don’t know why people run away from using sulfates when you’re going to put the moisture back into the hair anyways with a conditioner
Fatumata Gumaneh thank u :) I wrote something earlier but thought it was too long so I didn’t respond. I’m a stylist I agree with what ur saying
YOU have to learn YOUR hair and your hair's phases and behaviour patterns...
Tanesha Richardson omg thank u for this love. Just thank u couldn’t have said it any better :)

I heard these products have been in production for 10 years, and no stylers!! Really!! Thanks for looking out for us. You are the best!!!!!
So grateful for the education on ingredients but let me tell you a quick story ; went to a store with my daughter and looked in the mirror and felt bad my hair did not look good and the sale lady said you still waiting for your daughter is there something I can help you with I said yes my hair needs something she got a few good products but I decided to try the leave in conditioner pattern by Ms .Tracee Ross wow ;wow ;wow it would take me three different product to get that look that the pattern gave me. Ms.Tracee Ross I am hooked on your product I am 53 years old I have used products I am totally in love with it , it makes my hair feel so good its naturally curly and we all know you need good ingredients for curly hair .
Thank you for sharing the real deal on this line! I love Tracey but not more than my curls. I don’t believe she has any clue about ingredients especially since the alcohols are in the products. I’ll purchase when she gets rid of the sulfates, silicones, and isopropyl alcohol. Great review!!
I think Bianca said it was near the bottom, so it was probably used to carry or break down another of the ingredients nearby on the list. If it was the first or second ingredient, then I would be concerned. HTH.
Unfortunately, the products have bad ingredients underneath the natural ingredients such as polysorbates, propylene glycol, PEG and PPG 😔
Wow, thank you for the (further) education! Wow!!
@@mearrafranklin8711 THANK YOU! You're right. :)
@@mearrafranklin8711 Just because something is deemed safe to use by the government (of all people) does not mean it is harmless, nor does it being a "organic compound" in chemistry the terms "organic" and "inorganic" take on a slightly different meaning. Why all the commotion for silicon, it's not that bad?
If you clarify or use a shampoo that has gentle cleansing sulfates, then you can use silicones with little to no problems. Sulfates are the only way to remove them.
Bianca I would say different products work for different hair types. Some people may like these the way they are.
When detangling with a brush I would do smaller sections and shorter gentler strokes, I almost had a heart attack at 10:00
Girl, do you not see her curls? I’m sure she knows how to detangle her hair! Lol
Her hair is pretty thin when wet so I don’t think smaller sections would be a solution
I know right... ! I was screaming internally!!!! start at the bottom and work your way up...
Nakia Sutton yes girl! That’s how I do it 👏🏼
When she puts on her glasses, she looks like the teacher from Recess. Beautiful woman.
They said that they’re coming out with stylers next year
Felicity Ford as in 2020? Can they do it before summer and like right when this virus ends? I need more
This is exactly why I decided not to purchase because I wish she would have added a styler. Can’t tell how good the products are if I’m washing it out and using another product.
PREACH!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I’ve been sleeping under a rock 😩 I’ve never heard of these products!
This is the reason why I have been following you since I stumbled over one of your videos about 3 years ago. If is not Bianca approved you don't buy it! ❤😝

Yep and for low po hair, ya gotta be careful with that.
I think brands added silicone on their shampoo for shine (fake) on the hair.
Cyclic silicones may appear on labels by several different names, such as:
Cyclomethicone (can be a single cyclic silicone or a mixture of two or more)
Cyclopentasiloxane
Cyclotetrasiloxane
Cyclohexasiloxane
Octamethyl cyclotetrasiloxane
Several curly-haired consumers on NaturallyCurly have reported very unfavorable results with products containing cyclopentasiloxane in particular.

I swear your curls are one of a kind💚❤️💕🤩
I respect that you're not bullshiting your experience, certain "4C" youtubers will probably pretend it's the perfect product for the check.
Who are you talking about? These products have bad reviews across the board...
In my opinion silicons work differently for any hair type. Yes we should use silicon free stuff but a little bit doesn’t do too much harm. You just have to see what it does for your hair in my opinion.
Thank you for the details! The 3oz tube I have of shampoo is taking too long to finish! I’m ready to have silicone-free wash day!
Carla M. Okayyyyy. Keep that same energy.
@@lethalmaxim I will, because my energy is honest. I'm natural, but just as some knock certain products due to a silicone they turn a blind eye to the much worse chemicals that they put in their hair. Deflecting to my energy (which by the way you would know nothing about) is just another way of not addressing the hypocrisy. :)
Carla M. I’m agreeing with you ma’am. Lol

My problem with silicones isn't build up - it dries my hair out! My hair was nasty crunchy and weighed down with them, I cut them out, and I suddenly got curls when my hair was wet. So I encourages it with better conditioning and gels, etc, and WOW! I had not only curls, but HEALTHY. HAIR!

Wow you have a lot of power in the natural hair space good job on using your influence on the product developers themselves
