I buy bags of pumice and use it instead of perlite. I use coconut chunks as mulch for my outdoor plants in southern AZ to retain moisture in the soil. I use between 2-4 inches of it to mulch. I use Fox Farm ocean forest potting soil mix but I add pumice, coconut chunks, orchid/fir bark, and worm castings as my bad mix. I add extra pumice, perlite, and the crushed granite they use in chicken scratch in my succulent mixes. So far I've only experienced root rot once but the bamboo skewer method has really helped with all of my indoor plants. The outdoor plants get watered 2x a day during the summer as I use grow bags to keep the plants from baking in the hot and dry outdoors.
Nice!! I can only imagine the humidity issue there. I had the hardest time finding pumice. Great strategy for the mulch. I do similarly with my anthuriums!
I bought a big bag of oak charcoal. I crush or cut to size. I buy lava rock in 50 lb bags. Same for fir bark...i cut to size, dry and sterilize in the oven. I oven steralize most ingredients in the oven.
I really enjoyed this video. I’ve recently discovered the importance and the joy of mixing my own potting medium after years of keeping plants. - Why size 3 perlite? - Are worm castings like soil, or does it dissolve? Thanks for sharing! 🙋🏽♀️ Greetings from Brooklyn, NY
Great video. I previously purchased reptile bark (fir) and had planned to mix it with pumice, coco coir and perlite (only cause I have remnants of bags from before). I have hoyas that I'm trying to create a chunky type, water retentive mix for. I'm growing indoors. I'd forgotten about the charcoal....back to amazon....ughhh. Thanks, this was really helpful.
chunky perlite is hard to find, and the stuff always end up floating to the top of the pot, so I use pumice. I purchased Perlite a while ago and never used it. Once I finish what I have, I won't order anymore. I add liqui-dirt coco chunks and the liqui-dirt soil to give some moisture hold. I also use coco loco and Happy Frog and my plants like Pothos and Philodendrons love the stuff.
I love that mix! I currently switched the majority of my plants over to semi hydro, because I was sick of the pests that came in the dirt + over and underwatering issues with some of my plants. However, with the ones that are still in soil, I will be trying this mix with. Thank you.😃
That's the perfect mix. I get the same exact blend from Lowe's I need chunkier pearlite. I never thought about using the chips as a base. Going to have to do that because I tend to underwater and my plants' struggle come from me not watering enough because I get paranoid about root rot. So I'm going to need some chips to help retain some moisture. Another issue is just that I don't use any kind of plant food. I think that has made my plants struggle as well. So I'm going to have to pick up the same thing you've been using. Nice information. I'll be waiting for whenever you drop more content.
chunkier perlite/pumice is def helpful! nice vid! I'm still watching. Have you always been soil less ? if not what made you switch. also orchid mix is one of my go to options !
Ty!! I went soilless recently. I found myself rehabbing plants left and right due to the amount of rain I was getting. As I repotted plants, the soil was like mud.
This is very informative. Thank you. I’ve begun to switch over to soilless but I’ve been scared that I’d kill off my plants 😂! You have totally reassured me. Thanks. And that plant of yours is gorgeous!
Good video! But I disagree about the charcoal: There is no need for expensive horticulture charcoal! Barbecue charcoal is absolutely fine. (Of course NOT the "bricks" which are made of coaldust and glue) I only wash it an crush the bigger pieces. If you want, you can mix it with compost or wormcastings some time before using it, for "activating" the coal already.
I was looking at this video again. I have been using Redi Chip -coconut chips. You think that's similar to what you are using? Or do you think I can get by with using it?
The husks it is! I will order some. Anthuriums! They are just so magical and alluring it's wild. I'm a budding hobbiest and started from seed/babies so I can understand the development. As of now, all of my plants are either germinated seedlings or 3-4 leaf juveniles or in between. A video on what substrate to move them into would be super helpful! @@LordSaint_ 🖤🌱
Almost everything is grown outside, so I can never really tell. The few that I do have inside have no issues. Do you have a good gnat remedy? I have something i used that I swear by!
I have THE HARDEST time finding the size 3 perlite in my area OR on Amazon. Most of the "chunky" perlite on Amazon is the same as you'd get in a big box store. All I've been able to find is astroid perlite, so I have to break it up🤦🏻♀️
@@LordSaint_ yes, but only on Amazon and just in that HUGE bag that would be great if I needed that much, but I usually don't😕 I guess I need to go in and split it with someone 🤷🏻♀️
nice, nice to see another brother plant UA-camr !
New for me. Hoping to drop more content here 🙏🏾🙏🏾

Hope you like it! Thank you!!!
Great video man. Definitely agree that a chunky mix is important for aroids. I use a similar mix and have seen a big difference.
Nice!! What diff ingredient are you using?
I use those ingredients and LECA balls for water retention. Great vid!
Nice!! Ill have to try adding them.
Love this video. It satisfies both my love for plants and great studio lighting. Thank You 😊
Thank you!!! I appreciate the feedback!
Great video! I use the same orchid mix, I cut the bark in smaller pieces.
I really enjoyed this video. I’ve recently discovered the importance and the joy of mixing my own potting medium after years of keeping plants.

Glad you enjoyed it! Size 3 is larger and is good for better aeration. Worm castings is just a natural fertilizer
Thankuu, one of the best plant advice. Bestwishes 😊
Most welcome 😊
Your video was 🔥. Very helpful and informative. Great set too!
Glad it was helpful! I appreciate you watching!

That looks positively delicious! I love making media mixes. It's a bit like cooking and trying out new recipes.
It really is! I find myself taking handfuls and letting it trickle out of my hand 😂

I feel the same about rot! Our feeding has to b more consistent even though the coco chunks decently hold nutrients. Thanks for watching!
Btw, what food are you using?
Awesome man thanks
Thanks for watching!!!
Great information! Chunkier mix is really necessary. 👍
Couldn’t agree more!!

Is the the mix you use for your Anthurmiums that are more in the adult stage?
Yep!!
Would you recommend a different mix for younger plants (seedling + baby stage)?
Absolutely. Regular perlite, coco chunks are my additives for juvenile plants. It changes depending on the type. Anthurium vs Philo etc
By coco chunks you mean the coco husk chips and not like coco coir right? Appreciate the help! @@LordSaint_
Yes the husks! Are you growing anthurium or Philo? I can make a quick vid of what I’m using with starting small plants and seedlings

What are your watering practices for your aroids?
They are outdoors, so water every other day if not everyday with rain
Do you get fungus gnats by using worm castings in yours aroid mix?
Almost everything is grown outside, so I can never really tell. The few that I do have inside have no issues. Do you have a good gnat remedy? I have something i used that I swear by!
@A Saint Shoots also if they're outside there's probably a natural eco balance in nature
@@shevonnenorman8428 I rarely run into pest issues outside

I live in OR, just ordered a bag from Home Depot. Have to order online, not sold in stores.
