I sympathize a lot with Kageyama's former teammates. When you got a relationship with someone for 3 years and you can't make it work, but he turns around and begins adapting his behavior and working on their toxic traits, it eats at you. You start wondering "damn, was it me? Could I have done something different? Did I exhaust all options?" It's no surprise they're still carrying that baggage.
Yes. Especially as you see how commited they all are to the game. Imagine essentially being stuck with someone whose every set basically sets you up for failure, and only thinks about his own play.
I feel like so many reactors gloss over that moment as well as its significance. Haikyuu is an amazingly hyped anime, and it's easy to get overly absorbed by the over-arching story & the excitement of practice matches and official games. But it's the small moments of character development sprinkled in between that make this anime special & relatable on a personal, human level. Not only do we get a sense of how far Kageyama has come as a person & player over the past several seasons, but this was a key moment of growth for Kindaichi as well, since he's been low-key riddled with guilt and angst over his sour relationship with Kageyama. Also love how Kunimi nonchalantly serves as the emotional anchor to Kindaichi--he's clearly moved on and is so unflappable as a result.
Did you just comment this to another channel? I think I read this kind of comment in Elevate your self channel too. (Sorry bad english, not my 1st language) just curious no offense hehe
Just to clarify to suraj, I am a former libero (Nishinoya). The main aspect of volleyball defense is receiving. it's what a libero specializes in. Reading ball trajectory off the block, and a spikers position is the main skill we hone. Defense is being able to keep the ball off the floor. By hinata being a ball boy, he is indirectly learning how to play defense. In the first 3 seasons, all he learned was spiking (offense). He is trash at everything else. So for him to learn basic defensive (recieving) skills during this arc is pretty important. Him and Kageyama always have the most growth being the main characters.
I agree, both get the most growth but arguably they are the 2 who needed to learn what it means to be a team player the most just from different perspectives.
Maybe it's just an experience thing with anime, but Hinata's training arc seemed pretty important and pivotal to me right from the beginning. I'm wondering why everybody on the couch was rather unimpressed by it. I'm assuming because there wasn't as much high-flying animation or crazy matches?
Guessing it's cause they don't understand what Hinata has learned yet. They think he's just observed the game a bit more but haven't really put together the value of his training
@@creativeartivity I agree, good thing teh rest of teh season does a great job of showing just how much he learned and what an asset to his team that makes him when it matters most.
You are 100% allowed to not like the Hinata training arc but its perfect for him as a character. Hinata since he started has always been about playing "Play Play Play" forcing him to slow down to the point that he can only catch balls meant he had to focus on everything that goes on in the court, something he has a super hard time doing when he plays. Having a character learn by not playing is such a smart way of doing things to me. Having Hinata just play for 5 days would have been less fun and even close to pointless to me in many ways. "Don't underestimate what it takes to be a Ball Boy" he's a better player now.
Don’t focus on Tsukki setting, the point of it (along with the entire camp) was that Hinata learnt that there’s more to volleyball than spiking. He saw Tsukki do something he wouldn’t normally do and that’s something important for Hinata to learn…to be more rounded as a player and not only seen as a spiker and decoy. If Hinata had played in the camp he would’ve only focused on spiking, by only letting him be ball ball Hinata received a lot more!
In Japan people don't just give their phone number away they share their e-mail for the purpose of texting and communicating with each other the phone number is something very private to them and only childhood friends and family members and school/work filles have their number usually. Usually sharing your contact with someone means sharing your e-mail for texting purposes.
Suraj got gaslit by Nikki and Mickey. Hinata has had different animations when he was jumping or moving to emphasize his agility and his air but they were completely different than what Hoshiumi received with that “boom” jump. Hoshiumi confronted Kageyama after the latter witnessed his “boom” jump, setting, receiving, spiking etc. Most people are shocked that someone that small is such an all-around dominant player. Kageyama answers that he does think Hoshiumi is amazing but he will now be using Hoshiumi as a reference for what Hinata can at least become or even surpass. Kageyama is excited that Hinata can grow to be a player that dominate at a national level and he wants to compete against that version of Hinata someday to see who is stronger.
Basically what Miya means by "Goody Two Shoes" is that he sees Kageyama as a subservient setter, giving sets that his spiker's can easily hit and not necessarily what is best. Kageyama even goes as far as asking spiker's how he could make it even more easier for them to hit. Miya sees this as a weakness. Kageyama was confused because the last time he tried giving tosses he knew were best to his spiker's, they turned their backs on him. He's even more confused because the setter he desires to surpass, Oikawa, advised him to listen to his spiker's. And warned that if he didn't, he'd regress to his Tyrant King ways. But now he sees one of Japans top setters doing the same thing and it seems thats what got him at the training camp. So Kageyama’s conflicted. And to be honest, in my opinion Miya kind of has a point. Athletes only get better when they're pushed, especially in team sports where others hold you accountable. If Setters control the pace of the match through their sets, then Kageyama should put a little pressure on his spiker's to hit tosses that best suit the situation. Not just setting a toss that's the easiest for them to hit. Kindaichi was asking how Kageyama is doing because he feels bad for turning his back on him in Junior High. But he started feeling like that after seeing that Kageyama had changed. And finally, after seeing this episode Coach Washijo did Hinata a favour on purpose. We all know that Hinata physical ability is almost second to none. Speed, Stamina, Reflexes etc. But he sucks at the fundamentals. One of those things include his defence AKA receiving consistantly. Being a ball boy allowed him to not only work on positioning for and executing an effect receive, but to also analyse everything that happens on the court. In the sense of the sports entirety, Hinata up to this point has pretty much had tunnel vision. He was only truly fixated on his offensive capabilities and neglected some of the crucial basics. If Coach Ukai knows not to underestimate what it takes to be a ball boy, then you can bet Coach Washijo does too. You also get the sense he was testing Hinata’s resolve when you hear what he had to say at the end. About how people like him who lack in size will always have that hunger to overcome it. The hunger for height. Knowing this it finally makes sense as to why Coach Washijo said he could stay instead of telling him to leave. Great reaction!!
Not quite. First Kageyama set the ball in a way to force spikers to hit it in a certain place/tempo/course. Kindaichi and Co couldnt keep up and froze him out. Hinata could and did untill, he wanted a say in the way they attack as well. Oikawa then taught Kageyama that the spikers are the ones that initiate (decide place/tempo/course) an attack. After that, Kageyama started setting to where the spikers wanted him too. But, Miya points out that he does that so well and "subserviently" that he is dropping the quality of his sets to match the spiker, essentialy making them not progress. So, it's not really an contradiction, but more of an addition. A next step to bring out the best out of his spikers.
I think you guys will understand the importance of this training arc once they get to the spring tournament, but do understand that Hinata in no way was wasting his time at this training camp. He started playing volleyball only knowing and wanting to spike. He had no interest in passing or playing back row/defensive positions. The time he spent at camp made him realize that there is so much more to volleyball than attacking, there's information to be learned and gathered to make predictions and read your opponent.
Just to be clear, this is set in 2012. Their phones are even frequently old-fashioned flip phones like that. Becomes relevant at the very, very end of the story XD
The payoff for Hinata's training arc just ascends this anime and it never stops ascending after. I can't wait to see their reactions later on in the season
Also Atsumu didn't say that Kageyama should learn how to spike, he said he should play a different position all together. It was meant to be an indirect insult, lmao
I think Atsumu was more trying to say "if it's not fun, why are you doing it?" he loves being a setter, so Kageyama looking like he's not enjoying it made him think he'd be better off playing a different position.
I thought at first, when I thought that he was a jerk. But pretty quick into the game, you find out he just loves volleyball and setting so much, he was probably testing Kageyama. Kageyama passed 100% in his eyes btw. Kags answered that question in typical Kageyama/Wakatoshi dry fashion. "Scenario input is invalid. Spiker =/= setter. I am a setter, therefore cannot be anything other than a setter". Atsumu's low toss and "Because I am a setter!" is how he would answer his own question
Basically, Hinata learned the basics, without being taught the basics. He said it himself, there was more to volleyball than, running, jumping, spiking, blocking. And in this mini arc, he got a chance to observe that and learn from it, stepping back and observing the game as a whole and as an observer, rather than a player.
Huh. Underappreciated and seldom mentioned character development from Tanaka. In season 1, when he got Hinata and Kageyama to train for the initial practice match to get in the club, Tanaka had to borrow the keys. Which he didn't usually do because it was suspicious enough for Suga to be alerted of what they were planning. Now, Tanaka appears to be key holder and one of the earliest ones to arrive. Cool!
You need to understand that Hinata learns more by observing than he would by continuing to play with Karasuno, where his entire focus would have been on offense as it has been for the past 3 seasons. Remember, Hinata sucks at everything else. He needs to learn the basics and the ways of defense. The thing about volleyball is that even though we all have our positions and specialties, there is no escaping. You need to know the basics of every position. Other than his individual training when he and Kageyama had that fight, this is his biggest growth so far (and arguably the most important)
Hinata's ball boy arc is very important as this is where he starts to really go into technicalities of volleyball. This was the first basic training of hinata. But they didn't get it at all.
The translator did make it vague a bit but to farther explain what did Atsumu ( The blonde setter at the Japanese camp) meant by " goody-two shoes" here I will explain :- He meant that Kageyama is just being a good setter giving his hitters exactly what they want ( not what they need) ..... for example Oikawa would challenge his hitters by giving them a set thay makes them unconciously jump higher or hit harder and so, he gives them what they need the best to score , but Kageyama instead is challenging himself by adjusting to the hitters bad habits of not hitting it as hard as they can or not jumping high ( another example is when hinata realized that Tsukki was jumping higher bcs of koganegawa's set was high, kogane is an immature setter so he just sets it high so tsukki was obligated to jump hugher to but kageyama is skilled enough to adjust the hight for tsukki to be comfortable ). So in conclusion kags is just showing off how skilled he is by making his hitters comfortable but he should learn to make hitters go out of their comfort zone and give them more challenge .
I love everyone predicting that Hinata and Kageyama would comment on how much they or the other had changed only for them to instantly do their classic race to the gym proving that nothing has changed
yeah, Atsumu's words are pretty confusing in the volleyball context so...you gotta pay attention to details when Kageyama develops based on Miya's words later...he's not a bad character, I actually love his character, you gotta be pretty open to all characters when watching this series and know that almost everything they say that it's shown on the screen as relevant is always a key point for the growth of the characters, so you gotta try to interpret words and analyze how they could be translated to a volleyball context or even personal growth. Miya's words here are a big interesting step for Kageyama to develop in the future
Hinata never got a foot animation like hoshiomi , hoshiomi jumps way higher than him because he just uses more power to get off the floor. Ya going to see Hinata progress in this arc, him being the ball boy is the reason why he is going to get even better. Hinata only power is spiking and without Kagy he can’t really do it as good.
