    I've been a model railroader for nearly 60 years, and my significant other has known that since we were dating in our teens. She even bought me a CB&Q SD45 (HO) as a gift back then, which I have to this day, even though I switched to N scale. I don't hide purchases and do admit when I break the budget, but I try to stick with it because we're fixed income retirees! She has her major hobby, knitting, and I even encourage her to spend our hobby money on big stuff she wants. Honesty and support are the best policies, at least in my experience!

    I have always boasted about my hobby. I even made a side business out of it as well. I am a railroader by trade and a content creator. Never hide your passion and hobby. Women find honesty and passion attractive. When it comes to buying stuff, keep your priorities in line: family, bills, groceries. You are an adult, and if your partner doesn't allow you to have your own personal space or spend your own earned money, your partner doesn't respect you nor support. There is always comprising with having a family and/or space to model. Being a MRR doesn't mean to have a basement empire: remember that. My girlfriend and I are both model railroaders. She was introduced to the hobby through me. Being a theater tech and manager, communications director and graphic designer, and histiry researcher, she sees the modeling as her personal theater stage and a way to show others the history of our past. I am blessed to have her but never let others keep you down on your passion and love of the hobby. Period.

    I am 65 and been into railroading for years. My ex girlfriends and my life partner have always been supportive. Actually, they love my creative side! At my current place of work, all the younger staff think my past-time is so cool. They find it hard to believe that the scenery and structures I show in photos are just N-scale. Don't worry fella's keep photos of your work on your phone!😂

      LOL! It's actually interesting i have dated a couple girls that were definitely into it - not necessarily down to help or had any idea what i was doing - but were supportive and intrigued by it. it's one of those things, if people ask about your hobbies and you say model railroading i think they imagine little train sets set up on the floor or a table, may be a sheet of plywood. but when they actually see it - they're amazed by the scenery and the lights and the realism. so to that end... keeping photos on your phone is a great idea!

    I just recently got a divorce and I have a decent size railroad in my bonus room. I have also recently started dating again and my Girlfriend thinks it is really cool and loves my attention to details. So do your hobbies and the right one will come along.

    AH, the fair sex and model train hobby issue. I did my own poll with couples and ladies from church. Some of their response were very interesting, A lot of them did not like being a hobby widow, some said we need to do things together and it is not my thing. So on the conversation I just pointed out to the negative responses , one you know where he is at( if you need him) not in a bar and buying stuff for the hobby he will not have cash to spend on someone else. The biggy response I give them is you expect him to support your interest so you have to respect his.

      couple's hobbies are great and all but i have yet to find a woman who shares any of my direct hobby interests nor I hers. but i'll be happy to go out to the farm and see the baby goats with her if she doesn't mind going to the train show with me. Or - don't go to the train show and I'll go myself - just don't fuss about it. if we're exact copies, that's going to be a mighty boring relationship - but if she wants to hang out in the train room that's a double win.

    OMG, this is a great subject but the truth can hurt. Before all is said about my hobby I would have to ask if she has any hobbies of her own. If I get I "No" then that is a negative and I would have to see how the rest of the date went. If the lady is not mature enough to see that the hobby serves to enrich you as a person she should be supportive. The hobby provides a different type of relaxation the a woman cannot give. Any woman that says "ick" to a hobby is not worth a second look because you will be constantly living up to her standards not yours.....🙏🙏

      well put. i've actually dated someone that had no hobbies - it was weird. i couldn't understand how she filled her down time - and then once i did, realized how incompatible we were. reading, exploring, painting, cooking - all good hobbies. watching TV and doing nothing... literal nothing except online shopping... not exactly a hobby.

    As a younger guy who isn't "on the market" but was not too long ago, I have no idea where that poll got these women, because having hobbies, including trains, have always helped me. If you want to date a nerd like yourself, having hobbies makes it easier to date because "truly passionate people have hobbies and are more trustworthy". They also said that they much rather have someone who is in a train room than someone out at the bar potentially cheating. Now, the amount of money I spend is toned down haha.

      if it's come to the point where you're basing relationships on hobbies - normal hobbies - i really have to wonder if you're really looking for a relationship or just trying to film a tiktok trend. i think in general, most people embrace their partner's hobbies even if they don't necessarily engage themselves. however, modern women are fairly self-absorbed so i can see where the list of 'icks' they've created would steer some weaker minds.

    • @kevo05s
      @kevo05s Місяць тому

      @@AlleghenyNorthern While I agree with you on most of what you said, I'll have to disagree that not all modern women are fairly self-absorbed. Many of them are, but it's pretty easy to spot them when all they do is look at social media or take pictures of themselves. The smaller percentage of quirky/nerdy girl is downright awesome to be honest. There is hope, it's just harder to find. But the hobby helps, because those women are weeding themselves out by not wanting a man with a hobby lol.

    as a young person, i wouldnt worry too much about the "icks" things, its just a werid trend that chronically online people subscribe too. Icks are more about women lossing the honey moon romance phase. Unfortunately in the dating scene, lots of chronically online people think dating is all about the honeymoon and romance phase and being all lovey dovey.
    To be fair aswell i have only been a viewer on the dating scene never involved, so if somone has more expirence please correct me

    Unrelated question to the video but, what would you say is the clearance under the fuel tank on the Scaletrains sd40-2? I’m considering getting one but I’m worried that it would catch multiple times. Also im deciding on a Scaletrains sd40-2 or a c39-8 so if you could recommend one of those, that would be much appreciated. I also have my YT channel where I post some of my layout runs…

    • @jurigelato4366
      @jurigelato4366 Місяць тому +1

      Underbody clearance is only an issue when transitioning from an incline to even surface when the transitions are abrupt. Otherwise it should always be fine otherwise switches would immediately point out the issue.

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  Місяць тому +1

      ok, so the SD40-2 first run does have low clearances BUT if your track is marginally decent, you'll have no issue. They run great, and are wonderfully detailed. i highly recommend the ST SD40-2s and the C39-8s. I own multiples of all of them and they're great. If you have to file a few rail joints, you probably should be doing that anyway to improve general operations. it looks like you're running on Unitrack so just make sure your track is probably connected and the inclines are gradual and appropriate and you'll be set to go. I highly recommend you avoid Broadway Limited as a replacement brand for the SD40-2s. I have two of them and they're terrible both in reliability sound, and while the detail is decent - the other two faults make them a hard pass. Kato SD40-2s are great - good pullers, but you're not going to get nearly the details of the ScaleTrains versions.

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  Місяць тому

      i'm amused two fold... one, that we were talking about the results of a poll, not really dating, per se, since it was both dating or married poll results depending on how folks voted. however, since the entire video focused on model railroading and other modeler's experiences with people close to them, it is a video about model railroading. then of course number two - and this is my favorite one, that for some reason what offends you is of any concern of mine. However, the t-rex is from Shapeways so now that they're defunct, we'll either have to print our own or find another willing service though i haven't quite found one equal to Shapeways' library yet.
