As is typically the case, when you're told not to do something, there's good reason for it. These engines do not have a baffled oil pan. When you drift the car and sling it around the track, there are no baffles to keep some of the oil in place under the oil pick up tube. This can cause oil starvation and result in internal engine damage. It's not a racerboi Honda Civic. It's not an M4. These are not track focused vehicles. But, you're right, let's encourage ignorant behavior...
It’s great to watch this video 10 years later now that the 4 series has been so successful. Makes you think bmw knows what they’re doing! I had a 435i and drove it up to 170k miles. Loved that car
Ive had my 435 for about 6 years now and I still absolutely love it! A couple bolt ons and a stage 2 tune turns this car into a monster. Thankfully BMW is one of the last manufacturers that build drivers cars, so mine is a manual!
Chris... you get my vote for car reviewer of the decade!!!! That may not matter to you, but thank you anyway for such an awesome simple DRIVERS review!
I am working right now on reaching financial liberty. Chris Harris' videos motivate me to keep on goin' and drive and own the cars he does!!! You're the best Chris!!
You just gotta love Chris and the calm, cool and collected manner in which he sticks it to the man. It makes the colorful language seem less vulgar. And as for the looks of this new model, I really like the way the rear window and "C" pilar flow nicely into the trunk. Looks very sleek. Oh, and don't get me started on the rear amber turn signals of the M-model (not sure the 335i had them), simply beautiful. As good as the paddles are, make mine a manual.
People love chris harris because he's the embodiment of every kind of driver out there, he's what we'd all presumably love to be in a stig type of essence and obliterating the rear tires of every car he drives isn't mindless as most people think, its the true performance and raw emotion of the car and he's a rebel in a type of way, you don't tell him how to drive the car, he's connected with the road and the car is driving him.
No drifting (I'm guessing) was the brief to all the journalists, don't want to make bmw look bad and spin in off. If I had an M4 I'd trust Harris to ring it's neck and bring it back in one piece everytime.
Thank you Chris Harris !! You are the first and only one out that has the balls to call out on bmw's stupid decision to rename the 3 series to a 4 and even more the 4 series being the 2 door ! Thank you again !
"eeef you of course we are gonna do some drifting"... That was great. Amazing looking car but I agree wish BMW didn't mess with the naming and the 4 series thimg
Dinan Stage 1 tune, good for 360 hp and 392 ft-tq, and does NOT void your warranty. And before some idiot says something about those numbers not being wheel horse power, we ALL already know those are not wheel horse power numbers... but neither are the stock "300 300" BMW says the car has. So, we're comparing, apples to apples. Another quick note, the stock engine may be closer to 320hp... Either way, if you can afford a $60,000 435i spending $2,000 for the Dinan tune should be an easy decision.
Good on you, Chris! I have a 335i and an E46 M3. I step the rear around at least a little every time I drive them. That's the magic of these cars, controllable, sublime hooligans...
finally someone films what i consider (i used to live nearby) one of the most beautiful natural landscape and roads in Europe. oh by the yes i am portuguese
Great Review, Chris. A pretty positive one. I am very excited for this car. The M3/4 should be a real treat. It follows BMW's mantra of understated styling with benchmark performance and engineering. The styling is very conservative and classy, but not "hey, look at me" ostentatious(you could always paint match the FUNCTIONAL fender mounted air breather to the car). That's the kind of car I want, that's the kind of car I want to age with me, and not end up looking silly in it as I get older.
Such a great video & presentation. You are absolutely THE BEST at what you are doing and in the way you are doing it. Keep on the great work and keep on posting. Thank you.
i believe making it 4 series will help buyers/enthusiasts separate the 3 series folks who are generally normal people. i was wanting to buy an m3, but it just hides in the 3 series crowd; for a normal eye its a 3 series. Thanks for your reviews Chris we love them..
guys, it's only the beginning of the product life cycle for 435i. 335is/335i with M sport package did NOT get released until later on when the standard 335i was out on the market for some time. that being said, Edward I believe they will be offering DCT later on when the 435 starts appearing on the streets. just a matter of time when they start offering M packages on 435i like the E92 generation. it makes NO sense for them to release a new generation of the same car but with worse transmission.
Thanks Crisharris I enjoy your movies very much. Remember I am from south Africa so we do get such a car here but I don't have one myself. I have seen many on the roads even 428i and 420i and 320i and 316i and 318i and 320d and 420d and 330d and 335i and 340i and 440i and m3 and m4 but even if bmw told me don't drift I would note drift it because I might crash it. all in all a very good review lets applause for mister chris harris!
It's just a name (or a number ), it still is a cracking BMW! And they didn't kill the 3 series so don't panic! BMW is making the lineup more fresh and I like it.
I was on the market for a 335i coupe (E92) a couple of months ago. They couldn't find me one in the color and with the options *with manual transmission*. They tried selling me on a 435i. I gave up and, it may sound crazy, but I went ahead and got a BRZ! :p Saving the extra cash for some modifications in a few months… Oh, and I bought the BRZ and was going to lease the 335i! :P
Needs to be more radical looking! BMW filling a gap that doesn't exist LOVE the video though Chris!! as always! Keep them coming! *****CHRIS HARRIS FOR NEXT TOP GEAR PRESENTER******
exactly and remember that we already have an 8 series coupe and the 2 series coupe will be out next year (using the naming convention of the old 2002 coupe).
Cruised passed Chris Harris on my way to Cascais, saw the 435i and recognised him. New design looks better on the road than in photos, however I was expected something more different than the previous generation.
Am i the only person who doesn't think anything special of these kind of BMW's. It seems like a whole lot of the same, bland, decent power, ok car. I feel M series are the way to go :) Thank you Chris for making cars like these watchable. Cracking review as always.
Pulse Width Modulation on the LED's. Rather than just simply keeping the LED's on, they flicker on and off rapidly. Your eyes don't pick it up but it does get picked up on a camera depending on the shutter speed.
I feel the same why with my X5 its so amazing what BMW is doing with their normal cars today. My X5 has 350 BHP with 2 turbos and that 6 liter roar is amazing with the whistle of the turbo. Its Too bad most of the people (suburban moms) who drive them don't drive them like they should be driven. BMW Owners you know how I feel
stock for stock, I'd still take my 335is coupe any and every day. Looking forward to those M packs though... I assume that will be like the 'is' version of this 435i. But hopefully by then, I'll be in an M4! Love your reviews Chris!!
Agreed... Can we get over the number 4 for a minute and consider the fact that virtually every true car enthusiast has had the experience of being completely taken in by the magic of a specific car only to be totally underwhelmed after driving its replacement. Of course, there are many examples that could validate that experience, in BMW`s case, my opinion is that we, Mr Harris included, can corrupt the whole experience with impossible expectations, setting up the inevitable disappointment.
Changes gears earlier than the redline, unless you set it to S (Sport), but being a BMW, you can ativate semi-automatic mode, which is the best option for drifting.
@Nick Upson, it may be a competitor but do not just purely look at 0-60 times especially when the s5 is awd and the bmw rwd. Sure in a straight line it'll be quicker however if you watch some videos on handling the bmw will pull away in the bends and s5 keep up in straights
One man's atrocity is another's personal choice. I dislike moon roofs more than I dislike CF. The moon roof would only make the car more top heavy & I like the look of a pure white roof that matches the body. Even the body shop said it looks better. I don't know if you're old enough but back in '77 & later models, the bottom of 320s under the doors & bumpers where all flat black. I had mine painted white then too. If memory serves me right, my '93 also had flat black bottom & I painted it white.
I own an E90 335i /SP and I can't imagine how someone can use more power around town.. With an 8-speed this car and the 335i might be even better.. Looking forward to driving one at the dealership..
Looks and sounds good...not so sure about the new, goofy-looking front ends on current Bimmers. This model doesn't look much different from the current 3-Series though. All in all, keep it up Chris. Top Gear, eat your heart out....!
i never get in my bmw and not play with the back a little....notice that i do it in town mostly so i have a quite slippery surface :D E36 classic for life
You make a good point about the DCT being the more modern gear box and it makes sense for the car. However the very thing you said makes no sense is exactly what happened, unfortunately. They released it with an 8 spd auto... I mean there may be other philosophy at play here. Perhaps the 8 spd auto is better suited to in city/hwy driving, the market to whom the non-M division bmws are being sold. The DCT may be considered to "hardcore" for the average BMW
It may look like a 3 series with the rear doors removed, but actually, the WHOLE body panel is new, not from the 3 series F30. Only the bonnet is shared between the 3 Series F30 and the 4 Series F32
I'm sure that if everyone in the comments had their way, Chris would release a 9 hour video every 6 hours. I'm not saying that I wouldn't like that, but I'm sure he's doing the best he can to bring us quality content as much as possible, so cut him some slack, guys.
I think the whole mid size American market boom has played a role in BMW creating a 4 series & 1 series. It had to distance its true self from what middle pack 3 series and 5 series which are wildly popular even premium family sedans.at least in California our market usually dictates what evolution or revolution bmw will go to next.
Great car. Great review. Great roads. Great track. Chris is living the dream yet he has the audacity of calling this car boring. Stop comparing it to supercars and start comparing it to 320d's. Perhaps then it might impress rather then disappoint.
OMG how should i live knowing bmw changed the name of one of its legendary products.I cant eat,i cant sleep ,i cant shit.Humanity cant handle this either.
I think I understand what you're looking for. Hopefully there is a 435is, for those that would like the DCT without the cost of a full on M4... however, will there be a market when the 435i equipped with the 8 spd automatic transmission performs so well? Of that I'm not sure. Perhaps they won't be able to justify building a 435is.. But for your sake I hope they can.
This car is growing on me... Slowly. I like the aero bits as they actually work. The front looks odd because its using the air curtain from the 1M and the side vents actually help the car. As for the lack of difference from the 3 series, I have a problem with that.
I'm probably much older than you but my 1st BMW was a 1977 320. I sold that & bought a 1978 320, then a 1981 320, a 1984 3 series, a 1985 3, then a 1989, a 1992, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2005 M3 E46, & currently own a 2013 M3. I had BBS on my 1977 because the dealer was out of the turbine wheels. I had my 1st service on the 2013 M3 & they gave me a 328 as a loaner. My old 2005 M3 was much better. It was as if they were made by 2 different companies. I for one expected better.
Tells Chris not to drift and drifts it anyway due to respect for the car... this is why you're my favorite reviewer.
Giovanni Ramos vamos
As is typically the case, when you're told not to do something, there's good reason for it.

UA-cam is running out of quality automotive content, I noticed that in other segments too, but I also agree with the algorithm argument.
UA-cam wants you to see this ugly as fuck BMW.
New 4 series coming out
I’m not mad tho
Welcome to the club😂😂
I love this car, and i personally think it is beautiful to look at.

this is why everyone LOVES chris harris . He drives the cars like there meant to be driven.!!! another GREAT review. keep it coming Harris.
Chris, motoring world needs more people like you, especially in top managment of car companies :D You're the man!

The perfect sleeper car..
+Eric Brandenburg No that much of a sleeper tbf, at least not with the M-Sports package.
The M-Sport package is nothing more than ground effects along with suspension drop.
Eric Brandenburg Indeed, but it looks so much more agressive.
Agreed but not worth the extra 11 grand IMO.
I love mine.
The M-package of the 4-series costs 15 000 swedish crowns, which is 1 800 dollars. Not that much money.
the man just makes me smile. i like the looks a lot but i do agree with chris on the 4 subject.

NEIN DRIFTING!!!

Chris Harris is the man.. Direct, Articulate and spot on..
"ordinary". Spoken like someone who doesn't have to pay for the cars he drives.
I think he meant to say: ordinary for that kind of money, 40 grand
Chris Harris cannot be told what to do! Well played, Mr. Harris!
Chris they are afraid that the diff would give up after 1 lap of drift. Thats how shitty cars are built these days :(
well not really, he's tested it now. BMW's especially the 35's and the M's are meant to be driven like this. Fun
You sad little fuck =))

I sold that & bought a 1978 320, then a 1981 320, a 1984 3 series, a 1985 3, then a 1989, a 1992, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2005 M3 E46, & currently own a 2013 M3. I had BBS on my 1977 because the dealer was out of the turbine wheels. I had my 1st service on the 2013 M3 & they gave me a 328 as a loaner. My old 2005 M3 was much better. It was as if they were made by 2 different companies. I for one expected better.
