I also thought Hornsby was on this when I first heard it, as he was popping up in lots of places around that time (like End of the Innocence by Don Henley). The piano solo was actually performed by Peter-John Vettese.
I've tried to confirm that on PJV's website and from other sources but nobody seems to have any information on this recording despite his credits on many many other artists work... Dag Kolsrud is a highly graded pianist and if you watch his playing of it "live" he doesn't appear to be "faking it"... Can you site information sources so I can check please...@@fletchbg
Some folk stick around for decades and don't produce much remarkable, just good. Many have just one song but the song is an absolute belter. This is one of those 👌
I was surprised this song didnt do all that great here in the states. It has an incredible sound. Played it as a DJ here in Lincoln, Nebraska on 106FM. I remember playing it more than I should have and my boss was pissed at me. Oh well.....great song....great memories!!!!! Thanks ONE 2 MANY!!!
This actually had 2 attempts to crack the Top 40 in the UK and it's still baffling how it failed to cruise in to our singles chart - stalling at No. 43 in early 89. It was all over independent and bbc radio in the early summer of that year and sounded great in the sunshine. Another one of those quality 80's tracks that was sadly overlooked by a significant proportion of the record-buying public!
Yes I was a DJ on Radio Caroline at the time and out on the north sea we hammered this song for all we were worth. We were amazed when it didn't sail up the charts. There's no justice!
I sometimes wish it was the 1980's, I feel people's attitudes were a lot more laid back, I also liked the way people dressed back then and people had higher standards of respect.
I saw this being filmed in Covent Garden and love, love this song! How was this not a big hit!! Got played last night on Absolute 80s... Forgotten 80s Show; PLAY IT MORE ABSOLUTE 80s!!! Always the same songs... but there are great songs like this you could be playing!!! RIP Black (singer of 'Wonderful Life') who the lead singer Camilla was married to before his sad passing 5 years ago now in a car accident in Cork, Ireland - Keith
Camilla Griehsel still singing. Some of her songs on Spotify. Good music. I had the cassette tape of Downtown in the 80s. This song did deserve much more attention than it got. Love the piano intro.
Ive just came across this when I was unboxing an old record collection...I dont have a turntable currently to play it....so looked it up here because I couldn't remember how the song went. Been so many years since I've played a vinyl. Have to get me a turntable to play my old collection...brings back memories. Loved the 80's.
This was one of the onlytruly great things brought to me by MTV in 1989... when it was still a great music station, hardly any ads... no IDs plastered all over the screen... and brilliant music we wouldnt normally hear in the UK.. I got the 12 inch of this but the Album version is by far the best (practically the same as the single).. Obviously inspired by Bruce Hornsby's success but what a stunning song and that solo still gives me hairs on the back of my neck... Thankfully I got the album on CD and still play it now... wonderful... Shame there isn't a better copy of it somewhere on youtube..
In Norway, it spend 6 weeks at #1 in November and December 1988. It was one of my favourites back then. About half a year later, it reached top-40 on the American Billboard Chart.
So under-rated! This song is one of the very best of the 1908's, that sadly didn't get enough airplay!! Simple, catchy, original ... all the hallmarks of a superb song.
tim irvine i think its 2 things, doesnt sound like a radio hit and it sounds ALOT like Bruce Hornsby (piano does) and he was pretty big around that time
they basically do that to every song. Play the crap out of it then gone. Although they didn't play this song much. I heard it a few times, but that was enough to buy the 45.
@oyra123 I played this great song off a cart on commercial radio including after I wasn't supposed to play it anymore. The long intro was broken up into several different second amounts to aid the DJs talk ups.
@@bobdavis4848 there was a radio only shortened edit version on the promotion copy CD single. Shaved about 45 seconds off the song. I remember this getting a brief rotation on KXXX (X-100) in San Francisco in summer of 1989.
Love, love, love this song! I remember this used to be on the radio when my mum drove me to school and singing it when stuck in traffic... It's a firm favourite on my iPod ;o)
This is really "brilliant." The keyboard skill is fantastic! This so very much represented the late 1980's! It is the invitation to "come downtown" to so many young people who looked for a better life somewhere beyond their limitations. "We can live a life of happiness and style....."
Although I do not belong to the generation of the 80s, i,m to 1996 I am a lover of this musical genre of the 80s and this song brings back memories of 2013 and 2014 things that I did not know how to take advantage of and to value, now when listening to this song I only cry when I remember
I use the blue line fairly often, and now I'm going to have this song playing in my head every time I use it! :) Yup, I loved this song... recorded it off the radio and had it playing quite often on my Walkman back then. Never knew the name of the band till UA-cam came along.
Wow i haven't heard this song in 31 years bring back great memories of me working at Herman's Sporting Good when we used to play adult contemporary music in our store.
Heard this a couple of days ago and remembered what a great track it was. I know that myself and all the other club DJ's were playing it as we all loved it
I couldn't believe they never made another album. So many great songs from this CD: Downtown, Another Man, Man On The Run, and others. Still one of my favorite CD's of all time.
Only 12 when I heard this fantastic song the first time. My friend and I were listening to the radio everyday after with a tape ready to record it from the radio. Still love it and always will.
simplemente TEMÒN¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ . Excelente tema......... que bien me hace escuchar este tema...... gracias al que lo publicò¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
I forgot all about this song. I just now remembered that when i was a kid I jused to whistle this song again and again, to my family's great frustration. It didn't help that my whistling weren't much to write home about.
This is one of my all time favorites! Thinking back over the years and remembering all of the shi+ this song (whole CD for that matter) got me through, I still get a little emotional. I LOVE this group and wish they released more.
The Piano player from One 2 Many Dag Kolsrud and Bruce Hornsby studied in the same school of music and they are friends, maybe that's why they have something in common at the time to play!!!
Unfortunately the piano player on the Downtown recording is not Dag Kolsrud, but Peter-John Vettese. ("They needed a piano solo, and "The way it is" by Bruce Hornsby & The Range was out around that time, and they wanted something in that style. I suggested Peter play it. Both Andy and Dag are good players, but not THAT good. (Peter was one of the UK's top session keyboard players at that time.) He came in and did a rough, and they liked it, so the final version was done pretty well in one take and took less than an hour for the whole thing.")
For over 25 years I couldn't remember what the catchy song I used to love as a kid but only heard a few times was, then forgotten 80s radio played it about 2 yrs ago, over the moon. So pleased you've got it on here😀
We play this track on Affinity Radio in Cambridge quite regulary, I believe one of just a handful of UK stations to still play this great track by One 2 Many!
Great keyboard intro....nice memories!
Very Bruce Hornsby start, but catchy classic nordic 80s😎
I also thought Hornsby was on this when I first heard it, as he was popping up in lots of places around that time (like End of the Innocence by Don Henley). The piano solo was actually performed by Peter-John Vettese.
Actually sounds more like “ABC - When Smokey sings” or “Annie Lennox - Walking on Broken Glass” vibes

One of the greatest piano solos in the history of pop music.
Performed by Peter-John Vettese, session player extraordinaire and one-time member of Jethro Tull
The best song of the 80's!
You said it
@@fletchbgOMG, seriously? I never knew that. That explains how a simple, light pop song had such great, complex ideas in it.
Totaly agree loved this song when I first heard it on the des o`conner show hundreds of years ago!!
one of the most underrated songs of the late 1980's.
I am not alone!!!!! I have always thought so. What about Maria Vidal... Bodyrock?
Agreed - it should've been a way bigger hit in the U.S. I love it! I remember seeing this video a lot on MTV for a short period.
Easily. It just came and went and it deserved so much better.
What a brilliant tune how was this not much higher in the uk charts
Obviously very very underrated I love the 80’s , was 15 in 1989 but never heard of this song 😅
This has to be one of the greatest one hit wonders in history, excellent song
That piano solo still gives me goosebumps!!
This song was being played on the Sacramento airwaves in 1988 and for some reason disappeared. Great music.
It got a fair bit of play on BBC Radio One in the UK too, but I guess it fell away when it didn't crack the Top 40. Shame.
Its a crime that this great forgotten track from the 80s isn't available on iTunes!
adam brown Agreed Adam sir.
There is a cd on amazon called Forgotten hits of the 80s with it on it! I got it!
I can’t find it on Amazon :(
it isn't on Spotify either.....fuming!!!!
Or Spotify !!

The Vegas adult contempo stations played it all the time in 1989
The AC station I grew up with played it at least twice that I remember and I was hooked from then on!

Couldn't agree more. Best intro to a pop song ever.
I’m with you on this. I’ve got the 7” single! 💥
Believe it or not, this song peaked at # 37 in the US BILLBOARD Hot 100, spending 4 weeks in the Top Forty countdown.
Crikey, I remember buying this in HMV back in the day….
I sometimes wish it was the 1980's, I feel people's attitudes were a lot more laid back, I also liked the way people dressed back then and people had higher standards of respect.
truest words ever
I miss it too
This song just makes me happy! After hearing this and playing table keyboard I have a huge grin on my face!
Played on BBC Radio 2 last week, 14th Jan 2022.
Omg top 10 quality song
My favorite song that I've been listening to since I was little.
One of the best pop tunes of the 80's Kudos....
I was listening to my old tapes on cassette and I run into this masterpiece...
a similar song also from 1989 Norway band : Avalanche: I''ll be Waiting
I loved this song a lot! It was doing great in Denmark!

Heavily underrated!! One of my 80s pop favorites, and "happy hour starter". Good songs always come back to you, even after decades...
Great music with BayWatch piano sounds 🇧🇻, 1989 great year of music..
Still enjoying this song. Was 21 then. This song makes me feel it still. xxx
Camilla Griehsel still singing. Some of her songs on Spotify. Good music. I had the cassette tape of Downtown in the 80s. This song did deserve much more attention than it got. Love the piano intro.
Sheer brilliance doesn't even come close.
What a great song with great production, great piano. Its is one of the most underated pop songs of the 80s. How can you not play this loud...woow
Of all the years throughout the decade I still feel that 1989 produced some of the best music.
That is the Summer song....of all times...so come down town
Was one of my favorite songs in 1989. Bought it on cassette tape but lost it during a move. Was so glad to find it here.
Wanda Faircloth just come across this beauty in my cd Collection... lol...👍
Same here....
Very much the same for me, it gave me great inspiration over and over in the good old days!
It never sounded better from the web based perspective!

excellent piece of euro pop. I have carried the 12" record around half the world. Pure fun and happiness.
Found the single after years of searching. A guilty pleasure that holds up as well today as it did nearly 30 yrs ago.

An 80's gem! hard to find! I found it listening to a compilation of numbers 1 from different countries, it was number 1 in Norway

Where has this song been all my life? It's beautiful.
I listen to a lot of 80s channels but weirdly I seldomly hear this one. Gotta love the piano intro. Sounds like it was used in a tv series later on.
In my opinion one of the best Norwegian groups ever
