A little tip, sorry if it's too obvious. But don't shut the radiator in the smaller house off just yet. Our weather is very unpredictable this time of year and there's a risk of frozen, burst pipes. Also, about wet rooms: It's actually illegal not to have them. And forget insurance if you don't. I absolutely love cleaning the bathroom. I just hose mine down with the showerhead, scrub and rinse.
Also, if the place gets below 15/16 degrees celsius the house will be damaged by the cold. Even if you leave for a vacation etc, the house needs to be above that temperature.
Good advice for someone from a warm place like California. Might not know the risk of turning off the heat, so please pay attention to this tip. Keep a minimum of 15°C I'd recommend.
Congrats! I’m a dual citizen of Buffalo NY USA and Sweden!!! Lived there 1997-2009 in Borlänge and moved to Buffalo again with my Swede and our son in 09! Moving back to Sweden in the future.
Hi Devin! I am Jonas and live in Sweden, UA-cam recommended your channel and that house of yours is awesome, i clicked on everything when i heard your voice and your optimism, keep up the good work.
If you want a swedish book tip, read The Emigrants by Vilhelm Moberg. It’s a novel series about swedes emigrating to U.S in the 1800s. It’s a beautiful portrayal of swedish spirit, and you might be able to recognize yourself in their situation, although your doing it the opposite way and for other reasons 😊
I actually did stumble upon that video seeing your face. I’ve been watching your videos yeeears ago, crazy! Enjoy Sweden, I’ve spend a year there studying. Great country.
Swedish houses are built to insulate from the weather and due to the cold and wet climate combined with the insulation our houses are at risk for mold. This has lead to hard regulations on water and heating inside. There are alot of built in fail safes to prevent water damage and mold since that is extremely hazardous to health. This includes among other things, the "sealed" wet rooms.
That's a pretty unique house, I don't think I've ever seen a semi detached/double unit house like that here in Sweden before. 😀 It must be really nice to have your sister living so close to you, I can imagine it gives a sense of safety and belonging that would be difficult to attain in a new country otherwise. Btw, that black auger thing in the shed looks like a tool that's used to air the compost. Usually, you need to turn a compost so you get oxygen into the center (otherwise you will get growth of anaerobic bacteria that smells horrible), but with an auger like that, you just screw it down into the compost and pull it up to create air pockets all throughout the compost heap. 😊👍
Welcome to Sweden. Based on the boiler room you have water based heated flooring in the main units. It's not unlikely that they've chosen to extend that to the garage as well, cause the garage is definitely designed to be heated. You also have an error code/warning on your boiler. Since the system seems operational it's likely just an error code that needs to be cleared, then the status light should revert to green. 🙂
I had the exact same reaction. I have the same air to water heat pump in my house. The error could be something as easy as changing the air filter or opening an inlet valve for about one second to increase the water pressure in the system.
Divinity!!! I’m so proud of you and hope I can visit! The house is incredible and so perfect for you. So so excited to follow along and see what you do with the space. ❤❤
Omg Make Anything! Välkommen to Sweden! i used to watch all your videos on 3D printing back in the day. Hope you enjoy it here! the winter months are ROUGH
At least you got lights with your house, the previous owner took all the damn lights down in mine... :D Welcome and hope you enjoyed zooming through my village on the train ;)
Lovely home!! Congrats🎉 I have been researching Sweden and Norway for a few years now and really want to move there, badly! I was born and raised in S. Long Beach (hey neighbor!) I follow many UA-camrs that live in Sweden/Norway, and you're the first S. CA transplant I've come across. I look forward to following along on your adventure and getting a Californian's perspective on the culture and lifestyle in Sweden. Enjoy your new home, ❤ Diane
Welcome to Sweden hope you settle in. Come next winter I would invest in a heat pump (luftvärmepump) instead of the radiators. Depending on whether or not you have 3 glass windows and ceiling height of 2,4m it could save up to 50% of your heating costs. Even though Sweden is a net exporter of electricity the prices fluctuate a lot depending on the situation on continental Europe. Best of of luck to you!!
Hej Devin! Welcome to Sweden, Kalmar. I was born in Kalmar. Now Ilive outside Stockholm. I will for sure follow you. 😀❤ Kalmar has a lot history to explore.
Wow🤩 what a nice house you bought, Congratulations Devin🌻 I hope you feel at home in the new place soon. But it's wildly exciting to explore a new country and explore other people's culture. It's nice that you have your sister close, it makes everything more safe and cozy for you. She knows the country well after so many years. I look forward to seeing your interior design of the house, now I myself am someone who loves colors and cozy pictures and things, There must be soul and a reflection of who you are. Many homes seem like a housing catalog that everyone else has and everything is the same. Love to see people's personality shine through a home. Hope you have got good neighbors and a community that sticks together and does something together. I wish you the best going forward and I hope you are feeling better after this nasty bout of illness. Take care and good luck with everything. Many hugs Maria from Denmark🦋🍀🌷❤😊
Thank you Maria! I often battle with myself about going very colorful and wild with my decorations or keeping it clean and 'elevated'... But I will certainly find a way to bring my personality forward :)
As to answer your grass question: the grass stays green for of a few reasons. The snow acts as an insulator so the ground doesn't freeze and the sun doesn't bleach the grass. The grass also starts growing as soon as the snow starts melting. Grass has evolved to always keep the blades full of chlorophyll so it's ready to produce energy the moment the snow starts melting.
Welcome! Still don't get why you moved here, except for coming closer to your sister? Would love to hear the full story, life in cali vs the one you are searching for in sweden etc. A bit deeper.
Hi Devin! Congrats and welcome to EU!!! If the garage get colder in winter, just think about a pallet oven! Is a good and better solution to such space! Take care!
Congratulations on your new property! I also bought a place in Sweden two years ago, and it is always lots to do and new things to learn. I´m looking forward to seeing your progress in Kalmar!
I can’t wait to follow in your footsteps! These Swedish house listings on social media have me in a chokehold 😂. Hoping to go back to school in Sweden ASAP!
Welcome to sweden. In july on Öland on Lundegård camping we have a danceweek with traditionell swedish dans fox and bugg and some westcoast swing. Can be a fun thing to see that tradition of dancing and met people from all of sweden that goes there. Week 27
Very nice video! How come you have access to the empty neighbours house aswell? Have you been given thhe task to look after it and maybe also show it to speculators?
Nice, I hope you will enjoy. Even if the climate is probably not what you're use to. And remember we Swedes are reserved to the point that we could perceived arrogant. But it's our nature I guess to not mind others buissness. You have to continue to try to bond with people and finaly it will pay of. I hope you will suceed. I live in a small swedish town Fristad.
First impression was that $300K for the house was a bit much but when you revealed that you have a part you can rent out I actually think it was a pretty good deal. Good having you in the country! Hope the winter didn't do too much of a number on you. Summers are beautiful!
Welcome to Sweden, hope you enjoy it. Thought the price where abit high at first but the double unit could make you live almost rent free, depending on area pricing. Looks good though. Im intrigued so you get my Sub, hope to see some 3d printing and crafting.
Me also visit Öland every summer but allmost never able to go to Kalmar. Little far without car when stay on Lundegård thats still a but up from the bridge.
Welcome to Sweden, Småland, Kalmar län! Greetings from a city/town neighbor (Oskarshamn) I hope you will enjoy your new house and your life in Sweden. Good luck with your 3d endeavors and feel free to ask any questions!
Congrats on the new house and the big move! Very exciting. I've had my eye on Sweden for a few years. Seem like a beautiful place to live. I met you once at an event at Matter Hackers years ago. Sorry that I probably won't run into you at any other OC 3D printing events, but happy for you and your new adventures!
Your property is amazing! I think I'm about to issue myself an invitation. lol I've always dreamed of living abroad and have researched sooooo many destinations over the years. Now, you have me wondering about Sweden and it sounds like a great place for expats. I am so excited for you; I think the stars are aligned in your favor. I hope you will take us along to Gettlinge Gravefield at some point. As someone who lives in a colder climate without a garage, I hope you don't miss having a space for your car. Thank you so much for taking us along on this adventure!
Thanks! Hopefully I can document lots of adventures. I actually walked though Gettlinge Gravfält when I was visiting last summer but I wouldn't mind going again 😁
Congrats! By the way. Our coins do have a reference on them, the 1, 2, and 5 have symbols meaning sun, wind, and water as a homage to the Swedish Singer Ted Gärdestad and his "Sol, vind och vatten". Have a great day!

Absolutely. Never keep rooms/houses/whatever that have water pipes below freezing temperature.
Also, if the place gets below 15/16 degrees celsius the house will be damaged by the cold. Even if you leave for a vacation etc, the house needs to be above that temperature.
@@charliekoohler4774Well you can also use a dehumidifier, then it’s ok to let the temperature go below 10 C.

Looks nice :) A small advice, don´t turn the radiators off completely, the house gets mold if itś under 13 degree celcius
Welcome to Sweden! Kalmar is nice especially at the summer. Tip: Visit Karlskrona super nice naval city.
You are so welcome to Sweden and Scandinavia, brother. I hope you will enjoy our grounds and enviroments. Nice to have another nice soul here.
