Buying a house in Sweden! ⠇Week 1
Переглядів 41 тис.4 місяці тому
Welcome to this channel I created to document my lastest and greatest adventure: leaving my lifelong home of Southern California for a very different environment in rural Sweden! I bought a house right off the bat, and in this video I'll give you the first tour.
Some burglers trow Moss by the Doors to check if you are home
Nice vid! If you want a cat the Siberian cats are very low on the protein in the saliva that makes you allergic. Most people can live with Sibirians even if they normally are allergic to cats
O also missed the northern lights. I went out a few times and saw nothing. The next day I see my neighbor's got a video up on youtube. It was all about the timing. However, I did catch the solar eclipse back on April 8th and that was amazing!
I sometimes go to kolboda to take photos so you have chosen a great and beautiful place. 👍🏻
Yes. Reckless.
So impressed at your. Property. I’ ve wanted to move to Sweden for years. You got a roaring deal I’m also from SoCA - thousands of years ago. Really curious to see your 3D printing! Enjoy your new home.
Please keep out of prisons.....they are nightmare with agressive and violent inmates.....Prisons have big difficults to get people working there..since the inmats are so violent.😬
Interesting adventure! And cool seeing sweden from another perspective. A few tips to consider, since you talk about foraging, is to make sure you are careful with mushrooms! Learn a lot, and only go for the safe choices in the beginning! Like chantarelles that aren't easily mixed up with poisonous mushrooms. There are many kinds that are actually deadly or at least dangerous! There are cases of immigrants without local knowledge actually dying from mushrooms they had foraged. Also, there are a lot of tics in your area of sweden. So might be a good idea to get vaccinated against TBE.
Om du reser runt på olika platser i Sverige så tycker jag att du absolut ska besöka Norn utanför Hedemora I Dalarna. Mycket intressant historia där. Testa dessutom att göra sallader på maskrosblad och koka soppa på brännässlor.
You're vibing man, keep it up!
Nice list! Happy to take you ice skating in Trondheim Norway coming winter. However, there is only a very short window of opportunity for any particular lake - from the ice is thick enough (5'ish cm) until the snow comes, usually a week or two in December-January. But you are indeed right, it is fantastic!
i also missed the northern lights :( only heard of them the day after
For hedgehogs, and other wild life, create a water feature in your garden. Allowing cats, birds and hedgehogs to drink fresh water. It might even be an idea for a public artwork. Something to collect rainwater on some type of roof/canopy and slowly make it available for wildlife. Could test it out in your garden first. Could be high-tech with solar panels, filters and pumps. Or passive, just collecting. Or somewhere in between with a clever balancing gravity regulated water supply. Also consider building some hedgehog nests. I have built four, placed under balconies in two apartment houses. Hedgehogs every year.
well that's certainly not something i expected, i thought youtube was being dumb and randomly translating a video from the english channel lmfao
I'm a local and didn't know about the cool wind shelters. Thanks!
Your swedish is so good! Keep it up!!
Dude, you're like a pair of new eyes! You see things I don't see anymore. Congrats getting into the local paper on the frontpage! The rest of us have to do crazy things to end up there. There are a lot of beautiful places to see. Let me know next winter if you want to go ice skating or ice sailing, great places for that around where me and my family live, some northern lights too. But I know the south better. Would be fun to guide you and I got some spare time atm. Let me know. Cheers!
Sounds fun! Reach out when the time's right :)
i didnt see the northern lights either (i didnt even know thye were going to happen)
:'( we'll both catch them next time!
@@skapaallt yeah!
i didn't know those spiders were called crab spiders
Yup! My svarbror studies spiders so I get lots of fun spider facts :D
cool!
i like moss
Regarding the prison bucket list item: Not quite prison and also not quite Sweden, but I managed to get a ride in a Norwegian police van by accidentally hiking on the Norwegian highway early in the morning. Being used to the German Autobahn and its signs, we thought it was a regular road. Apparently someone called the police on us. They were very friendly and gave us a ride to our destination. A Taxi for free with a great anecdote on top! 10/10 would recommend.
Great tangential story :D I'd take that!
Amazing. Any chance to get to read the newspaper article? Is there an online version? My Swedish could use some practice :)
It is online, but behind a paywall, so I'm not sure if it's possible to read outside of Sweden :\ www.barometern.se/feature/32-arige-youtubern-devin-lamnade-kalifornien-och-kopte-villa-i-kolboda-ville-ha-ett-aventyr/
you ever tried to strengthen your immune system with spagyric essences?
I'm not familiar
I spent 6 weeks in Sala this year (Januari - Mars) and the lake had an ice layer thick enough for cars to clear the snow and small planes landing on it. It was a weird feeling seeing them coming down and taking off again. So you don't have to go that far north for that!
Cool! I wouldn't want to be on one of those planes :0
I have miss You, good to see You are back and healthy! Thank You for nice video
Thank you, hopefully it's a while before I'm sick again! 🤞😁
4:16 the skullcap of a fish, note the crest for the jaw muscles. Pretty big fish that far inland, do you have White-Tailed Eagles around? Bears have a habit to bite off the skulls of fish but they're not too common.
Cool! Apparently the white-tailed eagle is fairly common here so you may be on to something! I've also seen a ton of swans torn apart... I wonder if that's also their doing
@@skapaallt It's plausible I guess, usually it's foxes or lynxes that do that, but it's not as if White-Tailed eagles don't eat swans if they can, they're just a bit big for them.
Your swedish is good, I think you are unfortunate with dialect in your area, those southern accents are, well they are different. Living of the land sounds nice, there are several survival books on this subject. "They" say if you manage to survive three days, you will survive. Don't try it at winter, of course. Now swedish prisons may sound comfy compared to prisons in some other countries, but it's still prison. Many people from other countries think that swedes are very inhumane regarding social interactions, because we are basically an introvert people that also loves bureaucracy. That's your first hint of how other things than comfort can make you feel unsettled.
Sounds like three days is a good survival goal then :)
it's so awesome that you got into a paper!
can relate about the hedgehogs, they are cute, but fair warning: If there are more than one of them they can make the most terrifying noises when fighting/lovemaking/scaring competition away.
Yay you saved the back of your yard for wildflowers!??! That's awesome! As long as you stay safe, I'd love to see you try to go by boat to Öland! I guess the easiest way to get to see a prison is to become friends with a criminal, so you can visit them! A great nature spot I can personally recommend in a neighboring county from you is *Skurugata,* (double sided ravine) make sure to go soon or in the fall because in summertime there's literally a queue of tourists through the entire thing and you really want to be alone there, also Eksjö old town. You definitely want to pass by *Norra Kvill* national park and meet the ancient oak tree, *kvilleken* on the way! It's on it's last limb so pay it a visit soon. 🌳 *But beware, the area around Norra Kvill is full of trolls!* There's also *Store Mosse* ("Big marsh") a little south near Värnamo. I recommend Gotland and obviously Öland (allvaret). Visiting the island *Visingsö* in the lake Vättern to see the forest of super tall and old oak trees planted to become epic war ships, also Gränna for traditional sweets. Any beech forest you can find (I see Bokenäs close to you). Also travelling around in the Stockholm Archipelago's on a warm summer's day and I hear the Vasa museum is great.
Awesome list of suggestions, thank you!
@@skapaallt You might be interested in *the borderland* (.se) "Sweden's largest participatory festival", a burning man type thing where everyone builds the festival together. It should be right up your alley. It's usually in august but it's very limited access and the ticket lottery is closed for this year. It's just outside of Eksjö. Maybe next year??
@@skapaallt Perhaps *the borderlands* "Sweden's largest participatory festival" is of some interest to you? It's also near Eksjö.
there is a few hotels that used to be prisons. when i was a kid we used to have a hedgehog living under our front porch and it seems thats pretty commom.
i would recommend Fulufjället, it has the oldest tree in the world and swedens highest freefalling waterfall. i would also recommend sarek and abisko nationalpark. Borgahällan in Jämtland is a beutiful mountain that i would recommend aswell. if your intrested in historic places i would recommend Eketorps borg on öland and also Visby on gotland. one last thing i would recommend is Slåttdalsskrevan in höga kusten. im happy to see that your back and feeling well again.
Thanks, I'll definitely look into these :)
Where is IKEA?
The real IKEA was in you the whole time <3
@@skapaalltTrue. But waiting useful ikea hacks from you. ❤
The Midnight sun (above polar circle)??
Hi, you talking good little swedish in the video even you going SFI class. Im living in Sweden as well and not far from you in Ostkusten of north . and Im new follower of your channel as well.
Hedgehogs are cute but not to be messed with. 😁🦔 About public sculpture google rondellhund. For your bucket list- try lograft down Klarälven or canoeing down Göta kanal.
A new video, nice! I don't think you need to be to concerned about getting passive aggresive notes about your lawn. I suppose it can happen, but I've never heard of anybody getting a note for that reason. And right now there is a lot of talk about letting a part of your garden grow wild to help the pollinators and flowers that are getting rare.
I still feel like I have a reputation to uphold as the "newbie" in town 😅
The only cases I can think of it was for allowing 'maskrosor' (dandelions) grow freely and that was up front and not by a note. But pretty much as long as you don't let 'maskrosor' grow completly free to spread to the neigbours or make it into scrap yard (a few former cars are OK but no more than that) I do not think anyone will complain.
You might be confusing Norwegian prisons which have more of a reputation of being comfortable. Either way I suggest not trying for it in either countries. The Swedish prison system is completely full and it would be quite irresponsible to use up tax money for what is sure to not be a pleasure tour.
If you come to Stockholm you can stay in an old converted prison at least! "Långholmens vandrarhem", it's a combined hotel/hostel.
hmmm I might have to settle!
lol, spot on.
I am enjoying these videos. I am also sort of envious of the big move you've made. It'd be nice to be away from the election season that is ramping up in the U.S.
Since you're learning Swedish do you know about the techniques the best polyglots use? Depending on your teacher it may be quite different from what they use. I'd recommend the video by the channel What I've Learned.
You can grow moss by mixing moss with beer and brush the mixture where you want the moss, then spray the area with water. And after that water it every day until the moss starts growing. You should try island hopping in the Stockholm archipelago, if you're feeling adventurous you could do it with a kayak but there's plenty of ferries to the larger islands.
Yes, I've gotten that recommendation, as well as mixing with filmjölk... I just don't have a blender so I've started with the most simple test :P Island hopping sounds fun!
Hedgehogs has really bad eyesight, so they can get pretty close, some of them are not even scared by getting close.
Hmm, I should make them some tiny eyeglasses
It's probably better to ask for a tour of a prison than ending up in one lol 🙂
A day in a Swedish prison: ua-cam.com/video/cLweNDoJcWE/v-deo.html (only in Swedish I fear)
I work with public art I Sweden. If you want to know more just let me know.
Very cool, I'm definitely interested!
@@skapaallt sent you a message through your website. I hope it reaches you.
That's a mix of moss and lichen you picked
I got a hedgehog in my hedge. It grunts and make other noises. Sometimes i see it in the day but mostly it's night active. If one would find a good home in your garden it would stay. Food and water is probably not nessesary, just a dry and safe home under a bush with a lot of dry leaves and twigs.
Fun! I might have to build a little hedgehoghouse
And I believe you can give dog- or catfood to a hedgehog and water and NOT milk as some people think you’re supposed to 😅
Hedgehogs make the weirdest noises, scared me alot as a kid
I've never heard one so I look forward to being surprised...or scared? 😂
FALL IN LOVE MAN...... FALLLLLL IN LOOOOVE.....😄
I feel like putting that in a bucket list is bad luck 🫣😜
