Who else first heard this song on Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas? If I remember right, it was playing during the mission on the beach where you had to steal the DJ's van.
L7 is great, to me they're an example of what the 90s were all about.
This album is such a classic.
"Shit List", "Stuck Here Again", "Fuel My Fire", "Riding With A Movie Star" and "Packin' A Rod" are cool songs. Also I love the irony of Lex listening to L7 and wearing a Britney Spears shirt-too funny.
They are still active. Got together after some hiatus. Were first active from 1985-2001 and then again from 2014 and present.
Seen them the lollapalooza show b4 the great tampon in Dallas show, wat a great time
My old man just hung out with the Bassist from L7 in Las Vegas this past weekend..... loved the 90s chick bands! Some of the most underrated stuff out there, but definitely not for everyone though but at least you're willing to give it a shot..... that's what I love about these guys.... always open minded and willing to give it a shot
Would that be Gail?
I loved L7 - Babes In Toyland is also fun
Bruised Violet ❤
I agree 👍
Oh my goodness! I am glad you reacted to this song. They are a very underrated group.
So this band and other girl bands during this era were known as “Riot Grrrls.” This was an underground feminist political music movement that was very popular for a while. These ladies were probably the most well known during that era.
I would argue that Kathleen Hannah was at the forefront of that movement ❤
L7s first album came out in 1988, a year before Nirvana released Bleach, and it has all the hallmarks of a great grunge album with gritty distorted riffs and that punk/metal crossover.
Smell The Magic and Bleach are the two quintessential grunge albums to me. They both have the lo-fi production by Jack Endino for Sub Pop, and are classic examples of punk and metal influence.
Funnily enough Nirvana and L7s next albums were both produced by Butch Vig
I saw L7 back in the 90s on their UK tour, and they held the most outrageous raffle contest ever. The prize was to spend the night (if you know what I mean) with the drummer lol 😅
Great 90's punk/grunge band!
I know this tune while playing GTA San Andreas as a teenager back in the day, wow time really does fly 😢
Those girls in L7 were rough, hardcore girls in real life, I always liked them.
Yeah we need more gritty women on stage and screens. Back then I was hugely into Ramones. I wonder if L7 played with them, I'm guessing yes
One of the most underrated bands of the late 80s-90’s.
I saw them open for X and the Blasters at the Whiskey A GoGo. Mary's Danish played that night too and the opener was a very young and unknown No Doubt.
Saw Mary’s Danish in a small club in Hawaii when I was stationed out there. They were great, a lot of fun.
Music from my youth @ Skateboarding times
L7 was punk, garage rock! Early grunge. Late '80s and '90s band. I could see Brad liking this. Alternative rock. Lex not so much, lol. The punky musical structures, vocals, basic raw punk/garage rock music, lack of long fancy guitar solos, etc.
Also, music like this wont always sound crispy . Its also an old music video, probably bad recording. Bands (past and present) like them would be Blondie (new wave/punk influenced music like this), The Gits, Misfits, Joan Jett and the Heartbreakers, The Runaways, Bikini Kill/ LeTigre/Kathleen Hannah, The Donnas, Hole, early Pretenders, Skating Polly, The Breeders/Pixies, Sonic Youth, X, Plasmatics, Verulca Salt, Bombpops, X-Ray Spex, Babes in Toyland, etc.
L7 had other great videos to check out. "Sh!tlist", "Andres", "Everglade", "Fast and Frightening", "Deathwish", etc
They would have been bigger, but I think they had drug issues. Also mistreated some of their fans at concerts and stage equipment staff member and security staff members and the media. They would cuss, yell, and throw things at them. Threw fingers, spit, and threw things at the crowd, too. Sometimes stripped on stage. These girls were kinda wild lol. It didn't help them much. They were def Riot Grrrl, punks. No effs given.
LA, California punks.
Two CDs you need in your lives are Bricks are Heavy... and Hungry For Stink
L7 just means square..use to listen to this all the time on a cassette tape
Probably most famous in the UK for going on a programme in the 90's called The Word and one of them dropped her jeans at the end of the song to expose her "lady garden".
God, this brings back memories.
Its a political movement thing. When we ( the citizens of this country) pretend that we're dead, they (the government) cant hear a word that we say and will keep being shady/corrupt. Its a WAKE UP, PEOPLE type of song
Yep.
Interesting.
What this fella is saying, L7 were below average in my opinion
Word?
"Pretend We're Dead" is a classic from the tepid, stormy summer of 1992. It peaked at #8 on the Billboard Alternative chart on July 11, 1992. The album it came from has a name that always makes me laugh: Bricks Are Heavy.
The video upload you watched did not have high-quality audio or video. Be that as it may, alternative rock music in the 1990s did have a "fuzzy" quality to it, much of which was a rebuke of rock music in the 1980s, which was considered to be overwrought and overindulgent by comparison.
One cool thing about the 1990s is that there were a lot of rock bands that were entirely or predominantly female, such as L7, The Breeders, Veruca Salt, Letters To Cleo, Elastica, Lush, and Republica, among others. Before then, there were many bands fronted by a woman that were otherwise entirely men (the Go-Go's being a notable exception), but that changed in the 1990s. This phenomenon is part of what inspired Sarah McLachlan to create the Lilith Fair music festival.
L7 are great, check out Shove, Deathwish, Broomstick. They all sing too
I just discovered your channel and subscribed because I'm hooked . You both are so genuine and real , your a match made in heaven you have so much fun with one another . Thank you for such a great channel
I think this is the band “camel toe” in the movie “serial mom”
. Classic 90s grunge vibe. Takes me back..love it. Didn't they perform on The Word naked just on the bottom half?
One of them pulled a string _THING_
You should do a song by Belly, "Feed the Trees"
My fav grrl grunge band of all time ! 🤘Thx for uploading this guys 💯
You're so close to Mia Zapata and The Gits. Try their song It All Dies Anyway or Second Skin.
It sounds like one of Offsprings and one of Suicidal Tendencies songs
You guys have been hitting a lot of these Guitar Hero/Rock Band songs lately. Love it.
I keep saying the same thing . RB4 has some great songs Rob would love to play the drums are so fun on this song.
Hey you 2!! Nice to see you again...Hope your little one is doing well... Thanks for taking me back to highschool on this one.😂😂
L7 is really good in concert.. 1987.. damn I am old.
Thanks for sharing this 👍
L7 were good friends with Nirvana and I read that Kurt had wanted them to be the cheerleaders in the Smells Like Teen Spirit video but they couldn't do it because they had a prior commitment so they used strippers from one of the local clubs, instead.
Ahhh memories! 🤘👍
Bout time😂 L7 rules
Love them
This song sounds like a bid for radio airplay. Wargasm, Slide, and This Ain't Pleasure off same album Bricks are Heavy have more bite and in my view better. But happy to to see L7. Keep up cool work!
Best all-female American rock group ever. The song was anti-apathy. This was grunge so this was the production.
You gotta hear Japanese girls like Lovebites, who sound like a tighter Iron Maiden (start with “Holy War”). You did Band-Maid but Lex didn’t get it 😉 try “Onset”, it’s instrumental and sounds like Southern rock
I think L7's "sh*t list" is more up Lex's alley. It's a lot more heavy!
Saw them in Sydney way back in '95 or early '96. Was the tour after Hungry for Stink came out. Great show, and a ickass album from end to end.
90s sound. We were warned about big corporations getting bigger back then for a reason. Bands wanted to be garage again. The arena stuff was played out.
If you want a 90s song to wig out to, and of course we will enjoy you trying to figure out is,
Detachable Penis by King Missile
the video is low quality because it's most likely a VHS recording of standard def MTV from the early 90s, digitally ripped in the early 2000s at 144p. you'd have more pixels taking a photo through a window smeared with vaseline
Nothing like the complexity of Zepplin or Floyd, but catchy tune for 3 chords
Classic song!
Awesome song, just so cool!
Another cool chick band from the nineties, my favorite is a band called LEVEL C 😈🤘. Sounds like female version of Godsmack, have at least 5 major hits. Should check them out definitely more Lex style.
If you search YT, there's some vids with them at a huge festival in Brazil and Kurt and Courtney are on the side of the stage sitting watching them play, The song is about "pretend we're dead is a metaphor, for ppl who want to fit in so badly, they buy into all the coorperate and social standards, pretending they are the perfect"
Andre is my favorite song by L7
Love love love thanks. Live it rocks vers well! Also Babes in Toyland. Grunge women are the best👉
I haven't even clicked Play. I clicked on the video as soon as I saw it. "Wargasm", "One More Thing" and "Shit List" are other great L7 tracks, all on this album.
Edit: Just finished the video. The song is basically anti-establishment/conformity.
Was a bit amused to see you were recommended one of your own videos at the end.
"Fast and Frightening" and "Shitlist" isgood from L7
😂😂ya'll are YT Beavis and butt head😅😅
It’s OK for punk but get back to the 60s! Try Tommy James and the Shondells in Sweet Cherry Wine! You’ll like it
Finally ... I ❤ L7. React more her musics please. Specially live.
Great band. Girrrl power
awesome!! 🤘🎸❤
One of the best music posters I ever got was L7 ... 2 points for you guys reacting to them.
They're grunge girls band with a catchy song. One good song is better than none.
they're motorhead girls, grunge just took them in.....
this song isn't even in their top 10 best songs
@@mmomailman i totally agree.
This song is fine. It’s one of their more generic, made for radio songs. They have so many great ones. Shitlist, Fast and Frightening, Shove. Just to make a few.
This song was about standing up for women equality or just pretend that you’re dead
L7 is another way of staying square, which is everything this band was not(I guess that was the point), but cool name all the same.
Pretend We’re Dead Lyrics
[Verse 1]
What's up with what's going down
In every city, in every town
Cramping styles is the plan
They've got us in the palm of every hand
[Chorus]
When we pretend that we're dead
When we pretend that we're dead
They can't hear a word we've said
When we pretend that we're dead
[Post-Chorus]
Come on come on come on come on
Come on come on come on come on
Come on come on come on come on
Come on come on come on come on
[Verse 2]
Turn the tables with our unity
They're neither moral nor majority
Wake up and smell the coffee
Or just say no to individuality
[Chorus]
When we pretend that we're dead
(Pretend we're dead)
When we pretend that we're dead
(Pretend that we're dead)
They can't hear a word we've said
(Pretend we're dead)
When we pretend that we're dead
[Post-Chorus]
Come on come on come on come on
Come on come on come on come on
Come on come on come on come on
Come on come on come on come on
[Chorus]
When we pretend that we're dead
(Pretend we're dead)
When we pretend that we're dead
(Pretend that we're dead)
They can't hear a word we've said
(Pretend we're dead)
When we pretend that we're dead
[Outro]
Dead, (come on come on come on come on)
Dead, (pretend we're dead)
Dead, (come on come on come on come on)
Dead, (pretend we're dead)
Dead, (come on come on come on come on)
Dead, (pretend we're dead)
Dead, (come on come on come on come on)
Dead, (pretend we're dead)
Dead, (come on come on come on come on)
Dead, (pretend we're dead)
Dead, (come on come on come on come on)
Dead, (pretend we're dead)
Dead, (come on come on come on come on)
Dead, (pretend we're dead)
Dead, (come on come on come on come on)
Dead, (pretend we're dead)
Shit List is a real banger by L7 and NEEDS to be reviewed!
I 100% agree!!
I loved that song too and they used that in Pet Sematary part 2 movie
@@kennethhershkowitz8362 i recall it being used in the movie Natural Born Killers too
L7 were a magnificent band. If I wanted to point someone to just ONE band to epitomise grunge it would be L7 BEFORE Nirvana. Pure fuzz and filth and fk u attitude, I LOVE THEM
Veruca Salt have entered the chat .... .. .
If you want a better impression of L7 you'll need to listen to Fast and Frightening
Death Wish :)
American Society...
The live version
The masses are asses
I still have the cassette tape! hahaha...I just don't like to throw stuff away...
You should react to them performing this live on The Word in 1991-'92. They trashed the entire place afterwards. It was a defining grunge moment. ❤
Haven't listen to L7 in ages....used to be a staple.
All girl pink band, they were trendsetters
Gen x classic❤
Great song by a great band.
I would try “Fast and Frightening” by L7 to get a better sense of the band. Much more aggressive yet catchy.
This was L7 most commercially successful song but it's not even in their top 10 best songs. Even they didn't like it very much, knowing it was a catchy almost pop song.
The music for this song is the same as 'She Fucking Hates Me' by Puddle of Mud
I just love this song 🎵 idk why but I do
They have some really heavy one's to. Go ahead a little and do more.
YEAH! GO HARD!
They were rejected by their families and treated that way. Not the band, the story
They were kind of the head of that "Hole, Breeders, Veruca Salt, Tracy Bonham, Bikini Kill" grrrl rock of the 90's
L7 is incredible even better live
L7 = square; the same as pretending to be dead. Lex is right abut the zombified projection. You might prefer Pixies and The Breeders from this Indie/ Grunge era.
L7 ^^
Gotta go with Sh*t List from them!
Not my kind of music, but I loved this track it was just so catchy
Please pleeeease react to Bruise Violet by Babes in Toyland!! These girls rock
Just here to support your channel
L7 what a awesome punk band they truly did not get the recognization they deserved
Lollapalooza ‘93 😂
You guys should do Velvet Underground - Rock and Roll - the studio version. It’s about a girl that loves rock ‘n’ roll.
Great song
San andreas vibes
Some of the coolest albums, this and hungry for stink.
I was thinking 7L & 3sot3ric
GTA San Andreas, Brad. You know you heard this before.
L7 for life
I think L7 rocks. I saw them at Lollapalooza '94. I would say grunge/alt/hard rock. All 4 womyn✊🔥🎸
I have come to appreciate bands such as L7 and especially Nirvana so much. But in 92 I thought they were a Pixies ripoff😝🎸🤘
