  • Pediatric distal humerus fractures are common in children, but in very young children, X-rays may not reveal the full extent of the fracture due to incomplete ossification in the pediatric elbow.
Recognizing the different fracture patterns is key to appropriately diagnosing and treating pediatric distal humerus fractures. Providers must also consider how the injury may affect neurovascular structures and the distal humeral physis (growth plate).
Julia Sanders, MD, Director of Pediatric Orthopedic Trauma at Children’s Hospital Colorado and assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, explains best practices for diagnosing and treating these fractures. You’ll learn about the different types of pediatric distal humerus fractures, including supracondylar humerus fractures, lateral condyle fractures and medial epicondyle fractures. Dr. Sanders also discusses which fractures require surgery and which types may be managed conservatively.
The experts at Children’s Colorado evaluate and treat all types of orthopedic trauma, including the most complex cases. Our multidisciplinary team includes pediatric trauma surgeons, rehabilitation specialists and plastic and reconstructive surgeons.
