Martin and Lewis - End of show ad-lib

- From October 15th, 1950 - Sometimes I think (unfortunately) that their ad-libs - when they end the show with a few extra minutes to kill - are somewhat scripted (especially when they just happen to have perfect props laying nearby). But this end of show stretch definately took Dean and Jerry by surprise. They had no material whatsoever prepared for an emergency like that, but they showed their true live talents with lightning fast ad-libbing. I laughed so hard I nearly choked on my lemonade!
Amazing how they ad libbed much of their performances. All they had to do was walk on stage and they'd have me laughing. Martin is the best straight man to ever play the heavy. Beautiful voice too. These guys broke the mold. I would have loved to been alive, and seen them live. Glad I, at least got to grow up watching their movies. Now to be able to see these standup gems on UA-cam is great. Thanks for sharing.
RIP Jerry and Dean. You are now reunited once again.
That's terrible theology.
This was the genius of Martin and Lewis. This is how they become popular in clubs. They were the consummate Improv and Ad-Lib artists. They were the biggest act in show business during the 50's and early 60's.

67 years ago! Gosh! Sure makes me think about how old I'M getting. My mom introduced me to these two around 1980 in the movie Hollywood Or Bust. I'd have to say my favorite is Sailor Beware though.
...and I'd like to thank JillLovesJer for all her wonderfully chosen Martin and Lewis clips.
I love how funny jerry gets when he tries to be angry haha
But you are right. They were truly talented, fast, and great at ad-libbing (as further demonstrated in other posts). I am in awe and in great admiration when I watch them. They are one of my favorite comedic talents. Thanks for posting.
I love Jerry Lewis growing up, he was my comedy idol. The movies that he has done is so hilarious. When Martin and Lewis get together, they create something special that people like you and your friend would understand.
LOVE these guys! They put on a fantastic show.
So much chemistry!
Jerry Love You, R.I.P.
RIP Jerry we will miss u.
These guys are Genius!
I know yeah! They are geniuses. I like them and my Greek-Aussie best friend got me into them.
They were a wonderful team. and i too miss Jerry on the telethon. I donated but I didn't watch it this past year.
It's been my thought that with all the material they had done over and over that there was always something they could fall back on. Because of their night club act, they knew what the audience would like. With the ever present possibility of coming up short, they always had the props ready just in case. Since they had done the show for many years and knowing what could happen, I wouldn't be surprised that they even discussed, in advance, what they were going to do if they came up short.
I think a lot of people got bruised up by jerry hitting them.
Especially Marilyn Monroe since he use to bang her.
thanks for this!
To 9162vb48, if you don't think Jerry Lewis is a great comedian then you are the one who needs to contact your local mental clinic. This man along with Dean Martin is an Icon to so many people. He has helped so many and has put a smile on so many people's faces. I was not born during those wonderful years they were on and i wish i had been but i have enjoyed watching them and so has my children. We use to watch the MDA telethon but no more, since they got rid of Jerry. So sad :( .
These guys were GOLD. Lightning in a bottle, as JL says!
Pretty much still stands up ... wish I could've seen 'em do their stage show in their prime, as good as that bit was, I'm sure it pales in comparison. Anybody know any samples on youtube I can check out of them doing their live act?
That was my second birthday. I don't think we had a TV then. I wouldn't have remembered anyway.
For true professionals, three minutes is easy to kill. Just delve into the box of bits and take one out.
Genius ❤
The description of this is wrong. They ad lib to the props around them so of course they would fit perfect.
Ebay, Amazon, iOffer etc
Is there any way I could get a copy of this live performance? I love these guys!
Too bad that team broke up.
@9162vb48 If you hate Jerry so much, then why do you waste your precious time watching and commenting on his videos everywhere?

@9162vb48 call me crazy!!!
I'd love to sit down with an old person and have them walk me through exactly what is supposed to be funny about this video, or most any video like this. The humor just doesn't hold up. I literally can't even tell when they start and finish a joke. It's just gibberish and funny voices.
It doesn't have to make you die laughing or anything. Those two have got lovely personalities that just make you smile throughout. Even if it's not what we today would call funny, still they are two charming persons that present light segments which are at least delightful to watch if not really that funny.
That's a fair explanation.
When asked in an interview if they'd make it in show business today, 1980's, Dean said no. Jerry said they did it with corny jokes and goofing around because of the chemistry between them and also the war had just ended. People just wanted to laugh and their Schlick was new.
Another fair explanation. Hard to put myself in the mindset of a person in the 40s/50s.
Try their 'Singing In The Rain Clip'. These two changed the face of live comedy and TV had only just arrived then. They were the most popular pair ever. People queued around the block to get into their shows. They did 7 shows a day! I'm not from that generation and I love watching them.

And check out Jerry's 'Jitterbug' clip from 'Living it Up. What a talent.
