- Featured is a playthrough of a blitz chess game between Rodrigo Vasquez and Vladimir Kramnik from an Early Titled Tuesday event which was held on October 17th, 2023. Kramnik recently admitted, via a UA-cam comment on this topic of fair play surrounding him, that he played several tournaments under someone else’s chess.com account. This act violates chess.com’s Fair Play Policy. Kramnik played under Denis Khismatullin’s account, “Krakozia”. I share reasons why this is a violation of fair play policy, how a player can be negatively impacted because of it, and provide Kramnik’s UA-cam comments where he attempts to explain it all. Kramnik is a hypocrite. On the one hand criticising players for cheating who didn't and on the other hand deceiving in price events, and using his conspiratorial fight against cheating as an excuse. Thanks for the video Jerry, as always great content.
This is not hypocrisy... Using another account and using an engine is very different. It is like stealing or killing someone... Boyh break the law but they are different is essence and cannot attribute hypocrisy into it

He doesn't see it as cheating because it supposedly doesn't give an evident advantage over the opponent like an engine would. It is still against the rules and Kramnik, of all people, should know it better.

There is lots of rules, playing on someone else's account in the same level of competition to hide your identify as an experiment to see how differently people play is not cheating.
Now if he joined a low level tournament on some low level account and destroyed everyone, obviously that would be a different story.
You can say it's unethical but it's it no way comparable to using an engine to help you win

Three components: Action, dishonesty, advantage
1. Action: Yes, Kramnik actively sought out GMs to swap accounts with.
2. Dishonesty: Yes, Kramnik's opponent would be led to believe that they were playing someone else, when in fact, they were playing Kramnik.
3. Advantage: Yes, Kramnik would have an advantage playing in disguise, since other players might adjust their strategies to fit the deceptive label of the account, which would make them more likely to play into Kramnik's hands.
Literally how are you denying that this is cheating? The advantage it gives might not be as significant as with an engine, but it's still an unfair advantage. Your argument is like saying, "I only look up every other move with the engine. This is not cheating because it would be a bigger advantage if I looked up every move."
Kramnik continues to do an excellent job displaying to us all that there is no correlation between being good at chess and being smart in general.
Every time I think Kramnik can't get any lower he proves me wrong.
A lot of unethical people are like this, they invent delusions about people doing wrong as a means to justify their own dishonest behavior.
This is such a classic excuse for someone breaking the rules. "Um, I was investigating. Yeah, that's the ticket. I was doing an investigation!"
"No, officer. I wasn't speeding. I was actually testing the local police to see if they are following the rules!"
Imagine spending a boat load of money to prepare for over the board versus Fabiano, but Magnus sits as your opponent instead.
And imagine that Magnus is wearing a propeller beanie. If you're going to imagine, imagine big.
I feel like Kramnik has really fallen into a conspiracy theory mindset with his cheating concerns. The idea of violating the fair play rules so that he can get try to get his own "data" on cheaters is just absurd

As good statistician he is Kramnik didn’t realize that he would need 10s or 100s of thousands of games to build an anti cheating system. So he wasn’t collecting any data playing a couple of tournaments just fueling his own biases.
He probably has played hundreds os such games and possibly even has a team of people commited to his cause that assist him, so I wouldn't be surprised if his scheme ends up working in the end. Still, it doesn't justify him cheating other players. The end doesn't always justify the means, history really is a great indicator of that.

I know right!!! Right the very moment Jerry began this video, I've felt like there's a certain degree of restraint that's emanating from him. Admittedly, I haven't been around this channel too much, but I haven't felt this much tension when watching a video from him in, like, ever. Even Jerry grew weary of Kramnik's antics!

I mean, after a point, screw the rules (even though you play on the site, so you should abide, if you don't like it, don't play). What he said in the end is just delusional. "We are comparable in strength so it's fine to act as if I'm someone else". That's just wrong. Kramnik has entered some sort of villain arc to rid chess of all cheating, but in the way, he thinks he's god or something and he can do whatever he wants. I understand having passion for the game and trying to make it as good as it can possibly be, but the man just delves into creepiness.

Carlsen did use somebody else account
Because this occurred in Rd 11, we can take a stab at estimating the tiebreak results assuming that Vasquez wins.
For a start, Vasquez would have an SB score of 76 which would secure him 4th place IF all other tiebreaks stayed the same. Of course that wouldn't be the case, but I believe other players who had played either opponent would only have their SB score rise or fall by a maximum of 1 point. The only player close enough to worry about is Firouzja, who actually beat Vasquez in Rd 5 of this event.
The standings would therefore finish
3) Firouzja 9pts SB 78
4) Vasquez 9pts SB 76
Conclusion: If Vasquez had won in Rd 11, he would have finished 4th for $200 - Kramnik's actions potentially cost him that prize.
The idea that Denis Khismatullin and Vladimir Kramnik have the same rating just because they have the same rating in the platform is ludicrous. Khismatullin is 2559 and Kramnik 2753 in real life. You can horde ratings in the platform and get higher ratings just by playing more.
The question is, Kramnik is gonna do the PROCEDURE on himself?

Even if he didn't plan on claiming any prize money, you can't deny that his games can easily sway the result of the tournament. If your rating is high, you will frequently be matched with players who can't afford to give up a point.

I'd say a temporary ban for both accounts is probably warranted. Even if they never read the site rules, it should be pretty obvious that having someone, anyone, play your moves for you is not legal.
Put aside that he's violating a rule, but can someone explain to me what he wants to achieve with this "experiment"? What information does he get playing under the other account that he would not get as himself?

I disagree with Kramik on this whole thing... but if I were to step into a conspiratorial mindset for a minute:
I (Kramnik) am known throughout the chess world as the champion of catching this widespread cheating that is the only reasonable explanation for why lower rated players could be beating me. They know I am on to them... therefore, they will not do it against me in the same way now that I am the self-appointed cheat police.

Vladimir 'very interesting' Kramnik can only find cheaters in his own games? I, for one, will place all my trust in his magical anti-cheating system. No, it's obvious that he wanted the other accounts for this exact reason, that people expect a different play style and lines to play than they would if they played Kramnik himself. It's so obvious that he is trying to 'catch' cheaters off guard, that's literally why he's doing it. The whole point of switching accounts works exactly only because of the points Jerry brings up. The only thing he actually figured out is that his bias is still the same in all games, regardless of who he is playing. Also that his 'anti-cheat' is only capable of finding cheaters in his own games and not by analyzing anybody else's games, which he just as easily could have done. This guy is out of control.... even if his account would be banned, he would still just be streaming and 'collecting evidence' on other accounts.
If this was any other player, his accounts would immediately be banned and the tournament standings would be adjusted to mitigate the damage done to the players he cheated. If this does not happen, we are once again told that as long as your a top player, you can get away with everything you want.

His antics were old the day he started doing this. What we should do as a collective is let him fade to irrelevance. He has ruined his image of his own volition. He chased a ghost. Now he looks like a solar eclipse conspiracy theorist deluding himself into thinking everyone dies when the solar eclipse happens. Strip his platforms. How embarassing for a former world champion.
If Kasparov played against under the name Boris Badinov, Kramnik might not have prepared the Berlin.
If Topalov played as Vlad the Impaler, Kramnik wouldn't have spent all day every day in the bathroom where I still think he was cheating.
Kramnik is a great player who changed chess and his playing style. He's important in chess history. His interviews during hus last candidates performance indicate he lost the thread. He was already unreasonable, trusting his will more than objective reality. He's lost his mind. I don't say that lightly, but it is common in chess compared to other fields.
It wasn't a bathroom. The term "restroom" has misled many English speakers. It was a rest area that included couches to sit and relax (and also a toilet but Kramnik wasn't going there every time). Kramnik went there because he was chain-smoking due to his nerves getting the better of him and didn't want his wife to know.

@@odysseas573 thanks! I really did think he was cowering in a toilet stall the whole time. Though unfair, I sticking with that image of him. I've become a bit of a Topalov fan over time. I also realized how great Kramnik was when he suddenly started playing more aggressive chess in tournaments as he go older. It's so often the other way.
But, I think the only real "cure" to online cheating is to stop trying to make online chess serious. It feeds into every bad trend in the world, and the paranoia behind suspicion becomes insatible. Play, have fun, find a local club to go from just fun to competing for fun. It's a game. When it's not fun, stop. Worse for me is players who run their clock out in losing positions. I couldn't care less if I play a cheater because it's out of my control. I get that sitting in front of a computer in underwear looks like easy money to a GM, but there's probably a different kind of cost to the person.

However, to your point in this video... beyond the deception in itself and the point you've made about repertoire... Kramnik's point that it's "ok so long as the players are of equal strength" is utter nonsense because people obtain a rating through completely different approaches. Clearly Kramnik isn't ~3000 because he's good at flagging while for someone else that is his main factor. A tactical player vs one who is good at endgames, etc.

Chess, like Go, is a game where each side has complete information and no involvement of luck. (Backgammon also is a game of complete information, but involves a degree of luck.) By playing under someone else's name, and not disclosing it to the opponent, the cheater has complete information (knows the identity of both players), while the opponent is playing with incomplete information. How K, the vigilante of chess cheating, could not see this is beyond credible.

It’s hilarious to me how Kramnik claims he doesn’t see an issue with it because he’s using an account of similar strength. He is pretending a GM and a SuperGM are similar strength. Kramnik is a cheater.
Even if they were the exact same ELO it’s a problem. Players have their individual strengths, weaknesses, and styles. Playing with the expectation of A and getting B instead is a huge problem. Even in professional sports, teams have to report which players will be out of a game, allowing the other team to prepare accordingly.
As usual, an excellent video. Though different from most of yours, this one was very nice in pointing out a significant issue, in explaining things and supporting your reasoning in a very logical manner, and in helping expose the hypocrisy of Kramnik. I hate cheaters in anything. Fortunately, my parents raised me to always play fairly, and I detest those who don't and don't think there should ever be exceptions to it. For moral grounds alone, it's important not to cheat, but when a person cheats and/or when others don't try their best to prevent, expose, and punish cheating, they run an enormous risk of it damaging the credibility of the activity and everyone else participating in it--including the honest people. I don't know the entire story and whether it was ever proven that someone cheated against Kramnik, but what I have seen is that--even without decent evidence that strongly indicates cheating--Kramnik seems to be a pompous player who doesn't recognize that he's starting to slip from his once-lofty position and who is so self-absorbed that he thinks anytime he loses that his opponent cheated...and he is quick to slander/libel them, particularly for people who are a fair amount lower than his rating and yet beat him. ... The main issue here though is whether Kramnik cheated by assuming the identity of another player--for WHATEVER reason (and since he doesn't seem to accept what others say, "turnabouts fair play", and thus there's no reason that we should believe what HE'S claiming in his defense, once he was caught doing this). First, it's just unethical; second, he clearly willingly violated the rules; and third, as Jerry clearly, logically, and correctly points out, just the mere fact of someone appearing to be someone else could harm a player simply by causing them to unknowingly play into an "hidden"/fake player's strengths when the opponent/victim would not have done so otherwise. For a high-level GM and former world champion to apparently not consider these points (especially the last one) means he's not as smart as he thinks he is...or the alternative, that he realizes this but is attempting sophistry and only presenting the claims that defend his unethical, rule-breaking, and hypocritical actions. He's a great chess player, but as a person, I've lost all respect for him over the past year.
Kramnik in lying. He did make it into the top five on October 24, 2023, when he finished the 5th. Also, the reaction of the Russian chess community is remarkable. Some of them being Kramnik's fans are now bullying Matvey Galchenko, the guy who did and published the investigation on his UA-cam channel. That includes Ilya Levitov, the owner of a UA-cam channel of nearly 100,000 subs, who launches bullying discussions on his Telegram channel. The situation is fairly toxic. Maybe an online interview with Matvey Galchenko could be a good idea to give him a platform to speak internationally. He speaks excellent English, by the way.
I wonder if Kramnik is viewed as "establishment" like Karjackin is, which might explain the Putin trolls if so.

Top GM's sure are being slow to talk about this, and Kramnik mentioned that many of them knew about it beforehand. Honestly, you mentioned how information changes decisions, and like, "speedruns" are straight up that, false information. There's plenty of up and coming intermediates who would love to play a titled player. If Fabi wants to practice his opening stuff on me, I'd be happy to learn someone else's prep and give him a go. He doesn't need an anonymous account without a title on it, doing a speedrun, I volunteer as tribute. Tell me which SuperGM's prep I need to pick up and I'm there lol.
What? A speed run with a new account ISN'T the same as using another players account? When creating a new account for a speedrun, you aren't presenting as someone else. You aren't making your opponent think he's playing against someone he knows.

@@anderslarsen4412It's specifically against Cdc policy to create a new account and have that account's rating not reflect your true level of play before ever using that account live. The only exception to that are Cdc sanctioned speedrun accounts.

I think a salient point is that the more strongly you stand in favour of fair play, the more one would expect a willingness to follow the guidelines, yourself.
Basic anti-hypocrisy mindset.
Kramnik was a great world champion. He, himself, knows the sting of being accused of cheating. I would expect he'd be more...accurate.. when taking the knife to others.
When I first learned chess, I read about how top chess players seemed to be more likely to kind of go bonkers. So, I asked a chess coach (NM) why this would be the case. His thought was that when so much of your thinking is dedicated to trying to figure out the internal motivations of other people, that could lead to a kind of paranoid type of thinking.
Seemed like a reasonable idea to me at the time. Still does, I guess.
Also, you tend to find alot of unbalanced folks at the top of anything that requires obsessive levels of focus, resources, and time to the exclusion of other life aspects. Hyper-specialization probably favors the unbalanced.
It is more likely that more of the unbalanced in the starting pool make it to the top because of what that process demands of people than the game somehow makes people crazy. Most sane people look around along the path and decide to go touch grass at the expense of potential greatness.
(not that you have to be nuts to know what Hikaru knows... but it helps.)
As an example, look at IM Eric Rosen... why is he still an IM? Well, he likes tennis, travel, tea, and being relaxed. He loves the game but has other interests. All those other things could be cut out to pursue the norms he needs.... but he would cease to be Eric. He himself identifies this as the main reason for his title plateau.

I remember Magnus Carlsen playing under some IM's account. There's a very famous video on UA-cam where Carlsen plays against Jan Gustaffson and defeats him with the Dutch defense. Two major differences are that the game was on a different platform, and Carlsen didn't beat Gustaffson at a money event. However, maybe that as well may be considered violating fair-play policies.
