Actually true. The companies that support ProRes RAW, like Assimilate and Baselight, are really poor about spreading the word about their apps. Their loss, Blackmagic's gain
It’s a smart move by BM. They are making the industry aware that it’s a reliable codec/recording option.

The reason it didn't work is because FX6 and FX9 output raw over SDI not HDMI. Video assist could only read the raw signal from HDMI, not SDI. So they are just adding that ability is all.
Which is excellent for FX6//resolve users 🙏🏾
Incredible! I came from a blackmagic camera and now I own the Sony fx30, so this is amazing news. I don't see that they're going to offer this on the 30 yet, but the 6 and 9 will offer it, so that's pretty cool
Yea the FX3 and 30 may not have enough bandwidth from the HDMI to push the data rate, but time will tell, fingers crossed for you guys!

@@aytothemm.1035 it’s nothing to do with size. There are different revisions of HDMI that support different speed data rates. The BlackMagic Video assist would require a certain amount of data to come into the unit to capture the information needed to record BRaw. That’s why when you buy certain hdmi cables they have a rating (1080/4k30/4k60 etc ) based on the speed of the cable. Also similar to SDI, you’ll see 3G, 6G, and 12G SDI, which refers to the bandwidth.
@@Lumin8ProductionsIt can do Prores Raw, they’re both 12-bit raw. Can’t see them being too much different in terms of data.

this is a great FU to Atomos who Blackmagic hate. Hopefully BM bring out some larger displays to piss off Atomos even more.

That’s actually nice Blackmagic did this. I have a sigma FP and I can honestly say, I don’t miss shooting in ProRes Raw and having to transcode the footage. It’s really nice to save the time and get into the edit.

I initially didn’t go for Sony because I’m a DaVinci user who stresses the importance of the post pipeline. This is a huge breakthrough. Now if I could turn off the baked in noise reduction, get good skin tones, and see a very user friendly menu system, I might see Sony neck and neck with Red.
You can turn off NR in the fx6!
Nikon did this years ago with the OG Nikon Z6. Sony is just now catching up

Fun fact, Blackmagic RAW 4:1 is more space efficient than the non-raw Prores422HQ, with 3:1 being only a hair bigger. That's wildly more efficient than a lot of raw and even some compressed raw codecs out there!

As for the new updates for FX6 and its brothers, I hope we see a 12MP with 2-layer transistor stacked sensor that should reach 1 million ISO max and 17-19 stops of dynamic range.
Interesting, I just got the DJI Focus Assist in the mail today to use with my BMPCC 6K Pro because I love the image from that camera and BRAW so much. Might have reconsider my purchase and just stick with my FX6.
Off topic but kind of on topic: FX6 HDMI port, buy a HDMI surge protector ($20) if you're powering monitor using d-tap. A friend fried/killed his FX6 HDMI port because of a surge through HDMI cable and having to send to Sony to fix it, apparently a thing and better to be safe.

honestly, I never use raw in my professional work. If you have a well lit and exposed scene, prores or other codecs are fine

Its not just the raw panel settings. BRAW is also great for really smooth playback in Davinci. Even my nearly 7 year old PC edits BRAW really seamlessly with color grade. It runs smooth like prores.
And most likely it will have much more compression options.

SDI only at the moment. ProavUk just did an interview this morning. Cours hdmi should be as simple as flicking a switch once BM and Sony can agree to that.
Will this be real RAW simlar to Red/Blackmagic cameras where you can change the white balance without issues or "fake" raw where you get a slight image improvement for 10x data that slows down your computer and clogs up your hard drives? What is the real benefit with this setup vs. Red/Blackmagic cameras?
So funny enough BRAW is actually the fake raw as it has a partial debayer of the sensor data. Where as other forms of raw are actually raw which is why they are so hard to run and don't always look better because there is no in camera noise reduction or sharpening.

The rep for blackmagic did state they will look into the FX3 and the FX30 later down the line. Also stated apparently Sony wants to distinguish the FX line from the alpha line and very unlikely any alpha cameras will get this update.

Not saying this as a Sony hater but I wouldn’t get too excited. Panasonic has had Braw for a while and it’s still not as good as native Braw. External recording is never as convenient as internal.
I’m cool if it’s not As good as native BRAW but if it’s a step up from xavcsi which already great, here for it 🙏🏾
I love that Blackmagic is making braw available to more and more cameras. BMD is doing a ton of things right!! (Just need the Pyxis to start shipping lol)

First, thanks for the video. However, there is some misleading information. The FX6 and FX9 already had Raw recording. The BM monitor adds functionality to be able to record BM Raw.
Both BM Raw and ProRes Raw are not true raw. To record either you will need an external recorder anyway. .
If you work in Premiere or FcPX you have no issues with Sony uses ProRes raw. If you work on DR, as I do, I just convert ProRes raw into ProRes 444 and keep the dynamic range from the raw which is the important thing.

Its important to note that RED has licensed the compressed RAW license to almost every manufacturer, including Sony. Its not that they are more brazen. They are just coming out with their licensed options. Except Sony oddly.

When you say "RED has licensed" do you mean all the companies have already paid licensing fees for internal compressed RAW or they offered the option for companies to pay a license fee?
And aren't licenses on a per model basis? I know internal ProRes licensing is on a per model basis and assume that other companies have similar strategies.
@@Wildridefilms Almost all major camera companies have each entered into a licensing agreement with RED(Now NIKON) that allows them to use the technology in their cameras. If they don’t use it, they don’t have to pay. If they do use it, they pay a % to RED/NIKON for each camera sold.
