T90, because of you mocking murder holes I have found sometimes success in battering down enemy castles at 1100 with longswords when they try to no-army or little-army me Thank you for your service
Just goes to show that games at Mid Elo or lower are different but learning to control the game without needing murder holes is a great step in the upward elo trajectory
@@Thebees21 Pros min/max to a crazy degree and feel they can put those resources to better use in units which they directly control and don't potentially sit on a map being avoided by the enemy. However, I only play the computer and always get murder holes immediately 11
As a big fan of coastal I'm glad to see it in the map pool now. It really is a versatile map and a lot of people tend to bag on it because they can't admit their water game is weak af.
I believe the reason the AoC version of the game used Coastal as the default map because Ensembles Studios might have used it as the testbed to balance all civilisations. I mean, Coastal has a significant yet somewhat ignorable water, has a decent amount of all types of resources, it's open enough for agressive civs, while booming civs can wall the middle then claim water supremacy. Judging how rigid and unfllexible the testing has been, my theory is not out of the realm of possibilities.
To comment on the "playing Khmer as a beginner might develop bad habits" bit at 4:59, I learned the game with Khmer and I think it's a little hit and miss. It helped *get into* the game by reducing the amount of mental load I had to consider so I could try to think more actively. Obviously in the beginning what I was thinking was BAD, I was making bad choices, but being able to make choices that are deliberate at least helps to maintain motivation as opposed to following someone else's build order and engaging with the game more passively. From there it was about filling in the gaps, I wanted to learn other civs because playing Khmer showed me why AoE is a good time, and then through learning other civs I Ironed out bad habits. I think if I HAD to start with a more conventional civ I would have been intimidated by the learning curve (The tutorial certainly helps don't get me wrong but I want to PLAY the game y'know?) and given up before I'd even found out the habits I'd developed were bad.
I’ve never played ranked, or much at all for that matter, but having a fun way to play the game that lands you at mid-low ELO sounds really enjoyable. Not stressing about winning all the time but still finding the games that make you want to go all out Basically gate keeping mid elo sounds fun as
There’s a reason this game is still alive after 24 years!!! There are so many different game modes and maps. Also tons of content if you prefer to play single player.
yeah the single player esp. some of the early 1 sword campaigns are really fun and relaxing to play, you don't need to micro every 1 second you can slowly build up and invade
I got a new computer this week and was excited to finally be able to play DE after having watched your videos through the pandemic and only barely being able to run HD edition on my old laptop. But everyone was mean to me, like literally everyone. Even in unranked games that said “noobs welcome” I was getting flamed for being a minute and a half slower to castle than everyone else. I’m feeling really discouraged, maybe this isn’t the game for me after all :/
Hey if you want a much more friendly experience in the game as a new or lower skilled player, it may be unintuitive but 1v1 ranked is the place to go. After your initial games the ELO system will pair you up with players around the same level so you won't have to worry about getting steamrolled or finding the game too easy, and you won't have team mates who are expecting anything of you. Look to these Low Elo Legends games for inspiration. Some of these players have over 1,000 games in ranked and aren't worrying about getting better, just having fun games at speeds they feel comfortable with.
Play 1v1 ranked matches. Yes it is scary at first but the most unfriendly thing I have encountered so far, was people not calling the gg at the end. And you will eventually end up with really nice match ups.
What the other guys said is exactly right. “Noobs welcome” is sadly kind of meaningless, because you don’t know what they consider a noob, and you don’t know what their intentions are for putting that in their lobby game. It would make sense for unranked games to be relaxed and fun, but I think sometimes people play unranked because they’re looking for a very specific type of game, and then they get mad when it doesn’t pan out exactly the way they thought it would. I hope you have tons of great experiences with the game, and that you can forget all about those jerks.
As a general rule, most games become toxic holes when you play with randomly paired teams. I only like to play team games but I'm too bad to randomly pair so I only play when I can do it with friends I know.
Watching these recent LEL videos has made me thinking of a theory: I believe that the LEL bar has increased significantly in the past (and thus the bar for the whole AOE II players like, 5-6 years. i.e. A 450 ELO player will perform much, much better in general than a 450 ELO player five years ago. Don't have anything to back it up, its just a gut feeling that I feel true.
Makes me remember when I bought star craft 2. I would be like blue - run around the map delaying the end of the game. Not because I was trying to annoy anyone, i just kept dying extremely quickly (I never won a single game). So i tried to extend the playtime as much as possible as that was the only play i could get
i have 1000 hours and have played only kmer for the most part. Every time I accidently go random I either forget a barracks to build military production buildings, market blacksmith if im fast castling, or ill put a farm in the middle of nowhere with no granery. Kmer really is the most noob friendly civ.
LEL has the perfect mix of painful and entertainment I want from this game, on one hand the low elo players have surprisingly good ideas and strategies but on the other hand Jesus christ just secure the push you worked so hard to build upon man...
I appreciate T understanding some players just like to play their own way. I've been playing since the game came out, thought I was the biggest fan until I found this community lol, I like to plan a town and turtle on ranked. I'll never scout rush, or Druss, or whatever else, I'll play like it's 1999. I also won't get past 700 cus people are really good haha
Beginner noob here. Is there a difference between AOE HD 2013 edition and AOE definitive edition? If I want to play 1v1 ranked game, is it the same thing whether I load the AOE HD 2013 in Steam and click on the button that takes me to ranked games vs doing the same thing on AOE definitive edition? Thank you.
Not making military has got to be the #1 reason why most players at low elo lose. Blue would have had this in the bag if he'd just made even a little bit of military.
No the units inside are not converted and therefore still take up your enemy's population space. So what T90 recommends if you ever convert an enemy transport with units inside is to keep it alive as on top of the initial conversion they also get minus 5/10 pop space.
I play Xbox w/ mouse and keyboard and just got out of LEL. Then they broke it and I've lost about 7 in a row so I'm back to just watching your videos. Any idea if they will fix it anytime soon so I can double click units again and start playing again. Anyway thanks for the content and keep it coming!
