Well done! Now I want one. Boy, I'd be upset with my neighbors if I were you. You showed a mature way of handling the problem. You sir are going to be a great daddy and continue being a good neighbor. You are a great example. Love love love this mail box planter.
Thanks so much! 😄
His neighbor will knock this one over too if it doesn't fall over 1st
This is awesome man. Good for you showing your kid how to build something. I did the same with my kids growing up and their into building thing diy now. Nice video and great parenting friend!!! Congrats.
Awesome! Thank you! 😊
Nice video. I can't wait to make one. Your daughter is adorable!
Thanks! Good luck with yours!
Looks great. I love the look of the brick.
Beautiful and I love the planter on the side❤
Thanks!! 😊
looks great, im totally doing this myself this spring/summer
Awesome! I'm glad to hear it. Goodluck with yours!
Your daughter is adorable, beautiful! Love your mailbox style. Hope the neighbor is more careful!!! Excellent... I needed to see how you mounted the flag. Many thanks.
Thanks so much! They actually destroyed this one but I rebuilt it with solid concrete in the middle and reinforced with rebar. :) Not it is not going anywhere.
@@SimonSaysDIY I hope your neighbors pay for damages. After first accident you would think they would be more careful.
This is actually AMAZING!!
Thanks!
Well done sir.🎉
I appreciate it!
Great video, and very well done very nice family also.
Thanks so much! :)
Cutest daughter!!!
Great video Smon
Thanks 👍
Ohmygosh I love it!!! That’s exactly what I want
Thanks! I'm glad to hear it!
This looks awesome! Good job!
Thanks so much!
Would have been nice to see the mailbox actually going in
Yeah, Sorry about that. That would have been helpful.
Exactly!!! I was waiting for that but what a bummer. didn’t see it. The most important part
@@mpineyro77 Sorry about the camera angle change. I ended up cutting the bricks in half to fit behind the mailbox. that created a 2in shelf that I could set the mailbox on in the back. Hope that helps!
What was the approximate cost?
Would have liked to really seen how you put the mailbox in and got it to stay up while you were putting the brick Ian that was only a very important part
Really like mail box,I think new logo design, is really sharp
Thanks!
SimonSaysDIY how many bricks did you use
Great Job!
Awesome job!
Thanks!
Great project ! Thank you for sharing it. I’m going to ask somebody to do one for me,
Thank you, and keep your adorable assistant 👍🏻😃
Thanks so much!! 😁
Looks sick brother
Thanks!
This is thee cutest video!! And very detailed. Thanks for this.
Thank you! You are so welcome!
Wonderful job
Thanks!
Good job!
Thanks!
Awesome job
Thanks!
You did an awesome job! It looks great. 👍🏽
Thanks!
Awh geez, I took Masonry as a technical class in high school. That mortar.... ooof.
Yeah. Lol! :)
Nice job
Excellent
Thanks! :)
That looks great.
Thanks!
Fantastic and ur daughter is a two cute 😍 I'm in the process of looking for a home hopefully my mailbox i can just walk to it with the key but if not then i save this video 🙏 blessings to you and family.
Thanks! Good luck finding a new place!
only thing is, here in MI that cement pad has to be about 42 inches deep to keep that mailbox level for years to come. Which sucks but I'll be digging soon enough.
Wow, that is intense! Good luck with your project!
I'm in MI too. Wow how'd you get this #?
I live in Florida. Some asshat destroyed my vinyl covered 4x4 setup. So. I got me a 6x6. Sunk it 43” in concrete. With 8 pieces of 3/4” rebar. Also about 43”. I’m going to build something very similar to this project around it. Probably fill it all with concrete. Or broken pavers I already have. So the next time someone tries to hit it. The mailbox wins.
Grate vid learned a lot and have so ideas for mine when I get around to doing it
Thanks! i'm glad my video could help! :)
Ended up nice!
Super helpful! Thank you so much!
So glad it could help!
Your daughter is gorgeous.
Also, loove how passive aggressive this new mailbox is, asshat neighbour kept hitting your wooden one, here turd face, hit this brick one 🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha sadly they did hit it again. lol :)
@@SimonSaysDIY 🤬🤬🤬
Congrats bro that's very nice...👍👍
Thanks!
Great job. Your daughter will appreciate you including her in this video when she grows up. How many bricks did you need? How many bags of cement? What was the total time
Forget the mailbox. More of the gorgeous baby girl!
Thanks! :D I love to work with her any chance I get. As she is getting older she wants to help me while I work and pass be the tools I need :)
Wow thank you. This broke it down and made it way less intimidating!
Great to hear. Thanks!
Love it 😀
Thanks so much!! 😆
That was amazing thank
Thanks!
lucky number 13!!
Haha it ended up not being very lucky. A week after I finished the mail box a random car demolished it... I rebuilt it and made a video of that too lol.
Awesome
I’ve built hundreds of letterboxes over the years. That one would be about 3 hours.
Wow that’s impressive! You’re much faster than I am.
A couple of things. Wear thin gloves. The acid in the mortar will eat off your skin. When I pour the footing, I nail forms together. Makes it look nice and clean. Also, have enough bricks and mortar on hand. Also, an ad mix will make that mortar stick like you would not believe. I had to do a repair on a planter, and I had to grind off the mortar in the old bricks.
Would have been nice to see how you put the mail box in; that's the tricky part. Did you support it?
Also, a cheap angle grinder will cut bricks. Or you local brick yard may have a brick cutting saw. My local guy charged me 50 cents per brick to cut it to size. A water-cooled diamond saw. The bricks I buy are very hard.
Otherwise, nice job. You should make your crappy neighbor pay for it.
Thanks for the tips! these will help in future projects. Sorry for missing the mailbox being placed. I supported it in the back by cutting the bricks behind the box in half creating a shelf for the box to rest on and from the outside nothing looks different.
Thanks!
We need an update: Has that neighbor backed into this mailbox too?
So far so good. They haven’t hit it again! Although if they did the mailbox hasn’t moved!
Cleanup is only gonna be worse if your neighbor hits it again lol
Yeah your not kidding. A week after I finished some one backed into it and destroyed it! I rebuilt it and filled the inside of the mailbox with rebar and concrete to reinforce it. I will also be putting a light on top to make it more visible at night.
I miss my little nieces there all big now I’m old lol
Your mailbox looks fantastic! I really like the small planter on the side. May I ask how many bags of concrete is needed to complete this build? Thanks so much!
Thanks! I believe I used 5-6 bags of concrete for the base and 6 bags of mortar laying the brick.
I'm gonna guess 2 ,but use a half at a time, that way you won't waste any more than than you have to,
@@wayneeden98 I normally only mix one bag at a time because if you don't work fast enough it will start to harden.
Wish I could get that done here. How much cost would that be to hire someone here to do. ?
Frost line or no frost line without adequate footing depth that will eventually lean and fall over.
How many layers before you add mailbox? How many bricks did you need?
I used around 170 bricks. And I believe it was 12 rows of bricks till I placed the mailbox
Do you think about moving your mailbox to the other side
Unfortunately the other side is right on the property line and a telephone pole is right in the way. That would be a good solution though. Thanks!
Did you have any bricks in the center to sit the mailbox on?
Another question: I slowed down the video. When you laid the mailbox on you put the back of it on the back layer of bricks to support it. But then, the camera angle switched and you bricked BEHIND the back of the mailbox. If it was sitting on the back edge of the bricks, how did you do that?
Sorry about the camera angle change. I ended up cutting the bricks in half to fit behind the mailbox. Hope that helps!
@@SimonSaysDIY , Yes it does. Did you use a saw? Or just a brick hammer?
@@robertstrickland5164, I just used a brick hammer.
😎
Thanks!
💯👍
Thanks, I appreciate it! 😁
How is the mailbox holding up after 3 years?
I made my mailbox in the garage. My old house had the street number 9999, so it was unconvincing.
Nice! :)
Do you remember around how many bricks did you use? looks good!
Thanks! Around 170 bricks were used.
@@SimonSaysDIY thank you!
Nice, but how long before the neighbor backed into that one? :)
Sadly only 2 weeks... I had to totally reconstruct it and filled the center with concrete and rebar so it shouldn't go anywhere now. We haven't had any further issues! :) I made a video or of fixing it and improving it so it should never be destroyed again. ua-cam.com/video/UWYkyhSKcik/v-deo.html
Wow! I hope they paid for the materials at the very least.
@@SimonSaysDIY put an IED in it.
This has probably been addressed in the comments but I couldn't find it.....
Can you tell me the dimensions of this mailbox stand?
Nice job!!! looks great 👍!!!
I think a brush would have helped out these rough joints. Good job.
Thanks for the tip!
@@SimonSaysDIY Your welcome.
What is supporting the mailbox on the back side?
Is it just sitting flush against the bricks?
@@noerodriguez3595 Sorry I didn't show that. I actually cut the bricks on the backside where the mailbox would be in half the longways. This made the brick wall thinner on the back behind the mailbox ad created a shelf for the box to sit on in the back.
Right at 4:56 in my video, I cut a brick in half to fit behind the mail box.
Hope that helps!
Thanks for watching!
@@SimonSaysDIY OK that makes sense now. Thanks a lot!
Next time keep mortar joints within 1/2 inch to prevent future distortion.
Thanks for the tip! :)
How many bricks did it take? Bags of qwikrete?
Why do we have to worry about frost if we live in a cold zone?
Overtime frost will push objects up and out of the ground. The dirt below the mailbox will freeze and when it does it will expand and lift up the mailbox slightly. as it defrosts the mailbox will not settle back down where it was and could start to lean or tip over.
This may take several years but it's something you may want to plan for. To fix this you will want to find out how deep the frost goes in your area and then dig down to that point and build up from there.
Hello, i like this video. I think I should be able to do this. Do you remember the width and the length of the entire mailbox? Also, do you know the approximate amount of bricks that I need?
About how many hours did this take you?
Close to 16 hours. Thanks for watching!
Why did you use mortar for the first part of the bricks then went for cement?
I used mortar on all joints in between the bricks. Cement/Concrete mix has stones in it and this causes issue in the joints as the stones don't allow the bricks to be leveled properly. Mortar is smooth without rocks and this is used for block and brick laying.
If the neighbor kept hitting it I would think he would move the mailbox farther back unless he low-key didn’t like the neighbor LOL. But nice work nonetheless
haha, thanks!
There are Gov't requirements on Mailboxes . You can't just put them where you want it.
@@markbonham3477 yup. Check it out. Just search for requirements. The PO is generally not a-holes if you're off a few inches.
This looks the best of any brick mail boxes I have seen. Bravo!!! Wish I knew more about your mixture of mortar and water? It was fun watching you do this in time lapse but need more detail from you since I no nothing about laying bricks and I wish to build this for my new mail box which is rather large. Fabulous design and craftsmenship though.
Did you use a form for the base?
I didn't but it is not a bad idea to do so, I mixed the cement really thick so that I could mold it with a trowel and it would stay in the place I wanted it.
Making a form would take a bit longer but it would be easier to pour the cement
@@SimonSaysDIY plus look nicer. When I lay brick, I put the concrete a couple of inches above grade. Looks more professional, keeps water out of the mortar joint.
Nice work. Do you by chance have the plans? Or, could you publish dimensions and size of bricks?
Sorry, I do not have plans made for this.
What kind of plant is this?
You should attach the flag to the paver up to. I doubt it would be noticed on the side
Thanks for the suggestion!
Hi 5, excellent work, are you a builder?
Thanks! Not professionally, but I do enjoy working with my hands.
Isn't the planter going to fill up with water?
I actually left a hole in the slab beneath it so that the water could drain. Because of that we haven’t had any issues with too much water.
Simon how are the flowers doing? I’m thinking of placing a pvc pipe or something inside the hole to help with drainage. Thoughts?
How many bricks how many bags?
I used about 170 bricks and around 5-6 bags of concrete for the base and 6 bags of mortar laying the brick.
How much did this cost you in total?
I had the bricks so not very much. But if you were to buy the bricks and the mortar, it would likely be around $250-300
What are your dimensions for the mailbox ? Base?
I am a bricklayer; I usually make footer about 30x30, 7 to 8 in. deep. You need to make sure you get down to solid ground; I have seen many leaning because of that.
Thanks!
My base was 2x3 foot. A larger square would be better as Steven has mentioned.
How long did it take you? (Excluding your break for rain)
Almost two full days.
How many bricks would you need for a project like this?
I used approximately 170 bricks for this mailbox.
How many bricks roughly? Cost of project?
My only concern is that you didn’t put blocks inside the mailbox. Other than that great job!
Thanks!! I ended up having to reinforce this after someone smashed it and never owned up to it. Blocks inside would help strengthen it. I ended up filling the center with concrete and rebar to reinforce. Now if someone hits it hard enough to destroy it their car will not be driving away! :) haha
Mine just got smashed last night. I had a 4x4 4 ft in the hole and used that expanding foam. The post held up fine. It was the pvc assembly that failed. So now I got a 6x6 43” deep. 8 -42” pieces of 3/4” rebar. So far for 6 bags of concrete. Place is to get more concrete and build something very similar to what you did. I have left over pavers And cement blocks. To accommodate that. I will prob fill the cavity with broken chunks for more reinforcement.
I a car hits this the mailbox wins.
Now your neighbor can knock over your new brick mailbox (I sincerely hope I am wrong about that). :-)
They actually did about a week after I finished… no one owned up to it and had to re build it my self. The second time I filled the whole thing with concrete and rebar. If they hit it had enough to destroy it at least the car will not be basically totaled :)
@@SimonSaysDIY You might want to try these. I put them out by my brick mailbox so I (or anyone else) wouldn't accidentally hit it. www.walmart.com/ip/Blazer-36-Red-Reflective-Driveway-Marker-with-Metal-Post-1-376RDM/16828959?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&wl13=1318&adid=22222222420449455996&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=501107745824&wl4=pla-293946777986&wl5=9013454&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=local&wl12=16828959&wl13=1318&veh=sem_LIA&gclid=CjwKCAjwruSHBhAtEiwA_qCppjtQcLAK9Fi_TPnxlbZtNjKc8ld0iY6PdVeo-Qa3pIOK0o-vQGTt_xoCzDAQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
how much did all the material cost?
Nice all it needs is a light that’s what I would of put but hey I’m gonna start making videos too nice stuff I do custom work Iron fence with brink pillars and lights in every other one ur yard would look nice with what I said plus that beautiful in ground swimming pools in ur backyard man I’m gonna start making videos too see if I can make money off it I need my leg first lol my prosthetic leg then I will try look at my videos so bored me lol I eat a lot of rice and cook on one leg lol
about how many bricks did it take
Close to 170
He's definitely experienced. Not his first rodeo.
Thanks! Not a pro but I’ve done a few projects.
And when it rusts out, you what, break it all down and redo it?
How many bricks did you use for that project?
10
How much did this project cost you?!?
did neighbor help at least pay??
How does it look now, after the neighbour hit it lol
Well, a week after building it someone in a truck destroyed it and I have to put it back together. The second time I filled the inside with cement and rebar to make it withstand someone hitting it again.
See link below for the video of the repair ua-cam.com/video/UWYkyhSKcik/v-deo.html
SimonSaysDIY wow! People suck! You should put a camera outside if not already
Did your neighbor back into your brick mailbox yet?
As far as I know, they only ran into it the one time. It was destroyed and had to be rebuilt. I filled with solid concrete and rebar the second time around and now it is nearly indestructible 😊
Does he ever say what kind of mortar?
I used just regular masonry mortar. The main thing you want to look for is that is doesn't have any rocks of pebbles in the mix. I should just be a fine powder.
Whats with the pumkin
haha, well it was posted back in the fall of last year. :)
@@SimonSaysDIY Fair enough like the mailbox job looks great
@@goldentrowel1968 Thanks!
Just FYI, it's quick and easy to get the address stone for your brick mailbox at www.buildastone.com
Thanks
Good look though 8in slab is a bit over kill and I would have laid blocks inside the brick
Thanks! Unfortunately one week after I finished the mailbox some one smashed it. The base stayed in place but the top broke off. I rebuilt it and filled it with solid cement and rebar. Maybe its overkill but I don't want someone to destroy it again lol. :) thanks for watching!
@@SimonSaysDIY dang some people dont need to drive lol
@@josephreynolds3624 haha Yeah. Now if they hit it again it will at least destroy their car. :)
Joseph what size brick would u use then and for like this size mailbox would you do stacks of 4 blocks? Thanks
@@jenchancey3933 I'd probably us 4x4 blocks inside and put weep holes in the bottom run of brick instead of putting a whole in the slab
How much did this cost?
I'm not sure exactly how much this would cost because I already had all the bricks on hand. I ended up using about 170 bricks, 3 80lb bags of cement for the base, 6 60lb bags of mortar and one 24x24in cement paver for the top of the mailbox.
Thank you. I was trying to figure out exactly what you used and your response helps a lot. Hope mine turns out as good as yours.
