Great video and hilarious commentary, especially about reading the manual. I did the same exact thing when I first bought my AX700. Then I read the manual. END TRIGGER. I caught some of the same type of action with Cicadas (noisy friggin' bugs that come out of the ground once every 17 years). Keep it up Dave! Awesome video.

1 - The first time I was living at a home with a feeder, I was surprised at how aggressive these little birds are to each other when it comes to hogging the feeder. One would rest in a tree about 60 feet from the feeder and from there, dart out like a missile to drive off competitors. If I took too long to refill and rehang the feeder, they'd be hovering a foot away waiting for me to get lost.
2 - I am still learning so much about my AX700. It's deep. These tutorials help a lot. I can study the tech but it's not the same as being walked through the steps. It's like describing the location of all the controls on a car but not demonstrating the right sequence of events to get it out of the driveway.
3 - End trigger was a weird concept for a minute but makes total sense. All I have to do is think "Nailed it!" and hit the button to save it.
I really enjoyed getting to know the little hummers. They sure are mean, though!

have you test rx10 IV for 1000fps? with this ax700 you can record 1000fps at full HD?

All the reviews I've read state 'there is also the option to capture up to 960fps NTSC and 1000fps PAL without audio in a resolution below 1080p', what are those frame sizes for 240, 480 & 960fps?

Nice job .That camera does so much i printed the 303 pg manual at staples to make it easier to read .Have you tried using the phone or tablet app.? i used it to take pictures but not able to upload from camera to phone all that well.
I always just take out the card and plug it into my computer. It's really fast that way.

Any review on the LCD screen for AX43 in day light? I see reviewers have tagged it as highly glossy. How would you compare the LCD screen with AX53 and AX 700.
I have no experience with those other cameras, and so I can't comment on them, but I always prefer a viewfinder to a LCD screen when outdoors, whether movie or still camera. (I would never buy a "serious" camera without one.) I find the huge optional eyecup of the FDR-AX700 a bit weird, but you might grow to love it.
Hi from the UK. I also own a Sony FDR-AX700. Your videos have been a massive help, so thank you. I was wondering, am I right in thinking that after I've made all the changes in the various settings to video in slow motion & I've finished all the slo-mo filming I want to shoot, do I need to go back through that process to return to standard filming?
The only thing I can think of is that if you want to shoot in 4K you'd have to change the file format back to XAVC S 4K then adjust your exposure as
you go. S&Q only shoots in HD.
In my last video I was at an air show and I was switching back and forth without bothering with the file format. I just filmed everything in HD and was fine with that. I did have to readjust my exposure each time because the shutter speed is much shorter in slow motion.
I wander can this camera record more than 3 seconds of supe slow motion? I'm trying, but looks like 3 seconds on 960 fps is max, I need longer timeframe
I calculated from tests for the 50i system at 250, 500 or 1000 fps, the maximum is 5.2, 4.2 or 3.7 seconds respectively, while for the 60i system at 240, 480 or 960 fps, the maximum is 5.4, 4.4 or 3.9 seconds.
Can the FDR-AX700 shoot video in 1080i? I cannot find that option in the menus.

How to focus manual objects like motobikes or CrossFit competition, can we set a 1x time before recording and its ok?
What I've always done is to focus on a spot where I think the action will be. Not sure what you mean by setting 1x but zoom and focus can both be set in advance. I bet you'll get some awesome footage!

Actually you can change fps outside of S&Q. For example the setting 1080p 60p, the 60p refers to 60fps. Right Dave?

Awesome video of those amazing birds. Yeah, I too ALWAYS read the directions once all else has failed. Btw, as I watch your videos I'm waiting for my AX-700 to be delivered. Had an HDR-CX560v for a long time and am a bit exited for the AX-700.
That slow-mo stuff is fun! I think next summer I'm going after the hummers again if I can't think of anything else to shoot. Post what you get with yours! (Trying to think how to tie that in with flashlights)

Yes 1080p only. It has to produce a ton of pictures very fast and can't deal with huge file sizes.

No. See my reply to Genipool14. 960 fps is 3.9 and 480 is 4.4 seconds.

No, not in super slow motion. You need to let in all the light possible.

Hi David, since last month I own the Sony AX700. Everything how it works is clean to me. Besides the slow motion function. I followed the manual and your advice. Also the correct HD modus. But when I push de S&Q button twice the slow motion screen/menu does not appear. What am I doing wrong. My sd cards is 170 mbs.
The recording format needs to be set at REC FORMAT XAVC S HD. That will have to be done first before anything else. I'm kicking myself for not saying that in the video.

great video but back ground music is way to loud try editing in with your volume all the way up to make the right adjustments
For some reason under the super slow motion parameters, I'm only able to 1 of the 3 which is Rec Timing which is set to End Trigger. And when I double tap the S&Q button it only turns on and off S&Q, it doesn't go to the Super Slow Motion. I'm assuming the SD card I'm using has a limited Mbps not allowing me to record anything higher than 100 Mbps? My card is a ScanDisk (SDXC) U3 10 95 Mbps. I'm not sure this is entirely the reason because I see the option you've selected is 1080 / 24P 50 Mbps (which my card should be able to handle). I've just ordered a new card so I'll have to see if that changes things. Anyone else have this issue?

@@davidnelmsesq Yes, that worked thanks! I tried this before trying my new SD Card and that was the fix to switch it to XAVC S HD. It's okay though, it never hurts to have additional storage!!

@@davidnelmsesq so you can slow down 0.5 to 960 and you got 1920 fps :)
This works smoother on 60p off course
If you film in 960 and output 24p you are slowing down 40x slower. 960 output to 60p only gives you 16x slower and if you half that speed you get 32 times slower, which is still not as much as 24p gives you. So 960 at 24p is as slow as you can get straight out of the camera.
Hi Dave, I tried to follow your instructions but failed. My screen is all black when recording. Probably a wrong setting, reading the manual up and down does not really help. Do you have any idea what the problem could be?

Hi Dave, thank you for your quick reply. Except for gain and ISO I did exactly follow your instructions, i. e. the format is okay. I cannot believe that the SD card is an issue as I bought quite a recent one and it was the most performant one to get in my local electronics shop. So, thanks for the help anyway, I will go on trying 🤓. Should I fail, I'll publish a "cry for help" video here on UA-cam promising to lifelong subscription for the channel of the one who can fix this problem 😉.
Hello David. I've owned one of these cameras for nearly two years - and I still can't work out how to get it to record on high frame rate!
I set it to manual * then go into menu * S&Q * Super slow - only to find 'record format & frame rate' greyed out!
It's a lovely camera, but it would be nice to try this mode out just once before it gets worn out.

Sometimes it's better but when you can't anticipate the action that's coming end trigger is a godsend.

First set the camera to XAVC S HD. Super SloMo does not work with 4K or AVCHD.

Yes, but in super slow motion it only does HD.

Thanks I found it the footage was of kitesurfing it was very dark and unusable I’ll tray again at 240fps that should help great video by the way
Yeah, at 960 fps the shutter speed is very short so you need lots of light for it to come out good. @@wedrivetheworld

when i tried to do the super slow motion and then Rec format it doest let me do the next step i dont know if its maybe because i only have a SD card on the camara and it needs 2 of them!

file format XAVC S 4K REC FORMAT 2160/30P 60MBPS
Pity the manual is so poor and the ergonomics of the menu system so typically Sony that we need to have what should be simple functions explained (well explained) on UA-cam. In many respects since you cannot used this in 4k, the AX700 is a very good 1080 camera with a few functions in 4K available. But no replacement with all functions available in 4K in sight.
