A great, old-school way of introducing/reinforcing some social studies concepts at primary-grades level back in the day. Lots of material in here that a teacher would expand upon and get conversations started and lessons planned. I love PeriscopeFilm!

Born in 1960 in Boston, I grew up in a suburb a few miles south of the city, stores were more personable, mom and pops stores, the mega stores started and everything changed, the big chains were cheaper but it's a sterile environment, there's no chatting with the owners, I loved hardware stores, my first job was Bellingham hardware in Weymouth, Massachusetts, someone would come in and explain their situation and I'd really interact and help them with their projects or problems, sometimes I'd save them money by explaining how to fix it themselves, maybe they need 1 inch woodscrew, we'd sell them 1, not a package of 30, I loved that job, those days obviously are long gone.

    • @johnreitz5676

There are still hardware stores like that. I can think of several close to me.
You walk in, there is usually someone very knowledgeable at the front door. You can tell them what your project is and they'll know what you need and take you around the store.
Stores like this are not the cheapest but I think it's worth it to save time and aggravation.

This reminds me of a chain of supermarket in my area. They sell five-gallon plastic buckets. The buckets are emblazoned with the store's logo, huge, so you'll never forget. The buckets all come with lids. Also printed on every bucket is a statement that it comes with a free lid. It's absurd. It's like saying that a house comes with free walls, a car comes with free doors, a restaurant sandwich comes with free bread, a package of Oreos comes with free filling, a book comes with free pages, a pencil comes with a free eraser. Gimmick for idiots by idiots.

This film is actually a treasure. It will be able to show all future generations what it was like during the peak of the United States. The 1950s were the peak of American culture. Everything was made in America for Americans. The American dream of owning your own business or even a large department store was alive and well. This film was shot in Chicago and kids could safely go shopping by themselves and the parents didn’t have to worry about their safety. Now look at Chicago. A crime infested murder capital of a once great city. A city now run by corrupt mindless people who have no business running a city with their self interests, radical politics and racism. Future generations need to see what America was like at its peak.

Don't forget to mention that during that wonderful time taxes on the wealthy and corporations were a lot higher and labor unions are at the peak of their strength and thus our middle class was larger than it is today. The population of cities and our country and the world was a fraction of what it is today. The military industrial complex hadn't gotten so out of control as it is today sucking so much of our tax dollars away from healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Lots of stuff is different.

The suburban shopping centers began putting downtown small shops and bigger department stores out of business in the 1960's. WalMart then put the last nails in the coffin in the 1980's - 1990's with its deep discounts on everyday merchandise and its cheaply made foreign sourced shoes, clothing, household goods and toys. In the 2000's, WalMart and Amazon went after the local, regional and national supermarket chains with discount groceries.

''Toy Store'' , says, mother, hurry children bring all your toys down here to the Toy Store and you can play like your buying and selling Toys! doesn't that sound like fun? Mother had ulterior nefarious motives to have the children and all their toys in the basement. Can you guess what they might be? That's right, imprisoned children to be sold.
