    THE NIGHT WATCH
    (Wetton, Palmer-James, Fripp)
Shine, shine, the light of good works shine
The watch before the city gates depicted in their prime That golden light all grimy now
    Three hundred years have passed
The worthy Captain and his squad of troopers standing fast
The artist knew their faces well
The husbands of his lady friends
    His creditors and councillors
In armour bright, the merchant men
    Official moments of the guild
In poses keen from bygone days
    The city fathers frozen there
Upon the canvas dark with age
The smell of paint, a flask of wine
And turn those faces all to me
    The blunderbuss and halberd-shaft
    And Dutch respectability
They make their entrance one by one
Defenders of that way of life
    The redbrick home, the bourgeoisie
    Guitar lessons for the wife
So many years we suffered here
Our country racked with Spanish wars
Now comes a chance to find ourselves
And quiet reigns behind our doors
    We think about posterity again
And so the pride of little men
    The burghers good and true
Still living through the painter’s hand
    Request you all to understand

A Rock song about a 300 year old Rembrandt painting. Amazing. Not being an Art fan, I didn't make the connection until I was standing in front of the actual painting at the museum in Amsterdam. Wow, then it hit me...

@@guycaats maybe George thought of this song when naming the guardians of the North - just a bit more likely than referencing the painting since he comes off more down to earth than completely in the fantasy genre likely got a bit from history but also seems to reference Macbeth and other historical fiction.

I totally agree. Those three albums are the Nec Plus Ultra of prog. I bought each one when they came out and was hooked. And unlike much of the music of that era, they have aged beautifully. Thay sound like they could have been made yesterday (or tomorrow!).

Each track on this album displaces the others and becomes my favourite. No other album I know has ever done this. I had to force myself to return the CD to its owner who lent it to me on the strength of Fracture. I listened to it non-stop for 3 months as if in a trance.

Somehow, a simple click on the like icon doesn't quite convey how much I have enjoyed this song since first hearing it when I was a teenager, around 17 or 18, tripping with buddies listening to King Crimson loudly...... long ago and far away now, I still see and hear and feel all of it as though it were yesterday.

I't s my favorite along with Larks ,it starts from Larks, recovers the previous baggage, delicacy, fury, sinister atmospheres, jazz, and its seeds unravel from Red (Fracture),to Discipline (the oriental references of this track). The impetus of The Great Deceiver riff will be inherited albeit changed in the 80s (Absent Lovers,Sleepless).
SATBB is underrated between two albums , more cared for in the concept and in the amalgam a bit like what will happen to The Costrunktion Of Light.
