Clarification, Roth IRAs are pre taxed up front, therefore when you withdraw at retirement age, it'll be tax free. Either way, Uncle Sam will get your money. But at least the way I feel is that if you are taxed now, you're paying less tax now rather than 40+ years down the road. Also, what you see, is what you'll get later on. When you actually withdraw, if you have $1 million, the entire $1 million is yours rather than having to be taxed then. Also 401(k) accounts are great if ever you need a loan. The upside is that you borrow against yourself. Yes, there'll be interest charge but the interest goes back into your own account. Downside is that the money taken out won't be available to invest but still it's much better than taking a loan out of a bank, if you needed the money in an emergency. There's also a small "Administrative fee" that they'll charge to process the loan, but it's small.

I have always said, school teaches you "book smart" but not "life smart". The school system really needs to change to adapt to the real world.
